First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Robertson Gymnasium. IN THE POLLS LBSU moved up one spot to No. 6 in the AVCA national poll released on Jan. 7. The MPSF continued to dominate with 12 of its 13 teams featured among the top-15. The fi rst six spots in the poll were also occupied by MPSF squads. BACK AT THE BEACH Tenth-year head coach Alan Knipe returns to the helm of the 49er program after taking a leave of absence to coach the U.S. Men s National Team. Knipe, who has amassed a overall record in his nine-plus years at LBSU, also saw much success with Team USA, guiding them to the quarterfi nals of the 212 Olympic Games in London. The Americans advanced to the knockout round after MATCH 4 at #9 UC Santa Barbara Record: 2-1 (- MPSF) Head Coach: Rick McLaughlin Record at UCSB: 45-73, 5th yr Date: Wednesday, Jan. 9 Time: 7 p.m. (PST) Location: Robertson Gym Series Record LBSU leads, Current Streak LBSU won 2 Last Meeting March 2, 212 LBSU 3, at UCSB 2 fi nishing fi rst in Pool B, which also featured Brazil and Russia, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, respectively. SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS No. 9 UC Santa Barbara went 2-1 at its own UCSB/asics Invitational last weekend. The Gauchos opened the tournament with a fi ve-set loss to UCLA before sweeping Lewis and Loyola-Chicago. Dylan Davis averaged 1.73 kills and 1.91 blocks per set, while hitting at a.46 clip to earn all-tournament team honors. SERIES RECORD Long Beach State leads in its all-time series with UC Santa Barbara, 45-36, and has won eight of the last 1 meetings. The 49ers swept the regular-season series last year, claiming a 3-1 victory in Long Beach before pulling out a fi ve-set triumph in Santa Barbara. LAST TIME OUT Long Beach State went 2-1 last weekend to fi nish third at the UCSB/asics Invitational. The 49ers began the tournament with a 25-18, 25-22, victory over No. 1 Loyola- Chicago on Friday, Jan. 4. Taylor Crabb led LBSU with 14 kills, while Dalton Ammerman fi nished with 1. Colten Echave also chipped in eight kills and three blocks. Long Beach State returned to the court later that evening and dropped a 3- decision to top-ranked UC Irvine in the semifi nals. Crabb again posted a team-high in kills with nine. On Saturday, Jan. 5, unranked UC San Diego pushed the 49ers to fi ve sets, but LBSU was able to come out on top, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 16-25, Crabb registered a match-best 19 kills to go along with fi ve digs and six blocks. John La Rusch added 13 kills, while Andrew Sato totaled a team-high 11 digs. Connor Olbright was named to the all-tournament team after directing Long Beach State to a.249 hitting percentage. He had 11 assists on the weekend, including a seasonbest 43 vs. UC San Diego.

The Honolulu, Hawaii, native totaled double-fi gure kills twice in three matches, including a season-high 19 against UC San Diego. LA RUSCH ON THE RIGHT Sophomore opposite John La Rusch ranks second on the team with 2.55 kills per set following the 49ers opening weekend at the UCSB/asics Invitational. La Rusch tallied a season-high 13 kills and a career-best four blocks in a fi ve-set win over UC San Diego. OLBRIGHT WITH THE DISH Junior Connor Olbright returns as LBSU s starting setter. Olbright totaled a season-best 43 assists vs. UC San Diego and fi nished the UCSB/asics Invitational averaging 1. assists per set. He was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts. Olbright currently ranks 1th all-time at Long Beach State with 1,685 career assists. NOT JUST A NAME Freshman Andrew Sato comes from a decorated volleyball family and he proved to be following in their footsteps in his collegiate debut last weekend at the UCSB/asics Invitational. Sato started all three matches at libero and tied for the team lead with 21 digs (1.91/set). He established a season-high 11 digs in a 3-2 win over UC San Diego. Andrew s father, Gary, has been involved with the U.S. Men s National Team for over 2 years, serving as an assistant coach on the 1988 Olympic Gold Medal-winning team and on the 1992 squad that claimed the Bronze Medal. Andrew s uncle, Eric, was also a member of Team USA in 1988 and 1992, while his aunt, Liane, played in two Olympic Games, winning bronze in IN THE MIDDLE Junior middle blocker Jeff Ornee got off to a strong start at the UCSB/asics Invitational, registering a career-high 1 blocks in a 3-2 win over UC San Diego. Last year, he fi nished second on the team in blocks per set (1.4), while also ranking third with a.399 hitting percentage. Senior Colten Echave also provided a steady presence in the middle last weekend, totaling 17 kills and eight blocks, while posting a team-best.353 hitting percentage. His best performance came in the opener against Loyola-Chicago where he totaled 1 kills, while hitting at a.3 clip. Ammerman fi nished the tournament averaging 2.27 kills per set and fi nished second on the team with 7 attempts. FOR OPENERS Long Beach State picked up its sixth-straight seasonopening victory when it defeated Loyola-Chicago, 3-, on Friday, Jan. 4. Since the rally scoring era began in 21, the 49ers are 12-1 in season openers with their only loss coming against Cal State Northridge at UCSB s annual tournament in 27. BROTHERLY LOVE This will mark the fi nal season that brothers, Trevor and Taylor Crabb, will play together at Long Beach State. Last year, the duo combined to lead the 49ers to a 3-1 victory at Pacifi c as they each fi nished with a match-high 16 kills. It was a career best for Trevor, who is now in his senior campaign. CRABB EARNS PRESEASON HONORS Taylor Crabb was named a preseason All-American by Off the Block, a website focused solely on collegiate men s volleyball. The 6- outside hitter is coming off a 212 campaign in which he earned second-team All-MPSF and third-team Volleyball Magazine All- America honors after fi nishing with a team-best 33 kills (2.75/set) and 21 digs (1.91). 49ERS PICKED TO FINISH SIXTH Long Beach State was picked to fi nish sixth in the MPSF Men s Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll. The 49ers received 85 points to come in just ahead of reigning MPSF regular season champion and NCAA fi nalist USC (83 points). Defending national champion UC Irvine was tabbed as this year s favorite with 11 fi rst-place votes and 143 total points. BYU claimed the remaining two fi rst-place nods to fi nish second with 134 points. Pepperdine (113 points), Stanford (11) and UCLA (94) were also predicted to place ahead of LBSU. A LOOK BACK Long Beach State fi nished the 212 campaign with a overall record. The 49ers came in sixth place in the MPSF with a 1-12 mark in conference action. LBSU qualifi ed for the MPSF Tournament for the fourth time in fi ve years. UP NEXT Long Beach State continues MPSF play on the road next week when it heads to No. 5 UCLA for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
