The Beach and the Trojans will go head-to-head on Wednesday, March 7. First serve is set for 7 p.m. IN THE RANKINGS Long Beach State is ranked No. 1 in the country after opening the 2018 season with a perfect 16-0 record which ties the 1992 squad for the best start in program history. Mount Olive is not ranked, but brings a 10-5 overall record to the Pyramid. This season, Long Beach State s schedule features eight of the 15 nationally ranked teams. Head Coach: Alan Knipe Record at LBSU: (15th season) Career Record: (15th season) ABOUT THE BEACH Long Beach State boasts a perfect 16-0 record which ties the 1992 squad for the best start in program history. The Beach remain the only unbeaten team in Division I-II. LBSU s 16-match winning streak is the second-best in program history coming in behind the squad s 22-match winning streak which spanned two seasons. The Beach have won 23 straight matches inside the Walter Pyramid, which is the second-longest home winning streak in program history. As a team, Long Beach State is leading the nation in two statistical categories. The Beach lead the league in hitting percentage (.407) and opponent hitting percentage (.173) Junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco became just the 21st player in Long Beach State men s volleyball program history to reach the 1,000 kill mark after recording eight kills against Stanford on Jan. 26. DeFalco has now accumulated 1108 career kills to rank 18th all time at LBSU. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga has now racked up 3,024 career assists and is ranked seventh all time at Long Beach State. Junior opposite Kyle Ensing has led the Beach in kills in nine matches thus far. Ensing currently leads the team with 185 kills to average 3.63 per set which ranks him seventh in the Big West and 15th in the country. In addition to his solid offensive effort, DeFalco leads the Beach with 104 digs (2.04 per set) and 25 service aces (0.49 per set). His digs per set average is fourth in the conference, while his aces per set average is second in the league. The victory was historic as it marked the first Big West Conference home win in Long Beach State men s volleyball history, but it also was historic because the Beach have matched the best start in program history. Until tonight, the only Long Beach State men s volleyball team to begin the year with a 16-0 record was the 1992 squad. In addition to improving to 16-0 on year, Long Beach State also moved to 2-0 in Big West action, while CSUN dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Beach turned in a convincing performance as they never allowed the Matadors to score more than 18 points in a single set. Long Beach State utilized a balanced attack and a solid team effort to hit.316 in the contest, while the defense held CSUN to just.152 hitting. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga ran another on-point offense for the Beach as he dished out 28 assists and set the tone for LBSU to knock down 28 kills in the match. Leading the Beach offense was junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco who tallied 15 kills on 24 swings with four errors to hit a teambest.458. Junior opposite Kyle Ensing contributed nine kills, while hitting.333 (9-2-21), and redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado added five kills. Tuaniga solid on all sides of the ball as he was just one dig shy of a double-double, finishing the match with a team-best nine digs. DeFalco added seven digs, while senior outside hitter Bjarne Huus and junior libero Jordan Molina each contributed four. Freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson led the team with three blocks (one solo and two block assists), while Huus, Tuaniga, DeFaco, and Amado each added a pair of blocks assists in the contest. Despite winning each set by at least seven points, Long Beach State and CSUN battled early in each frame. The Beach and Matadors traded points in the first set until the Beach used a 3-0 run, highlighted by an Ensing ace, to take an 8-5 lead. With a three-point edge, the Beach led the rest of the way and cruised to a win. The second set was a back-and-forth affair that saw 11 ties and four lead changes before Long Beach State opened up a lead on back-toback kills by Tuaniga. The Beach followed that with a 5-0 run sparked by a kill off the hands of DeFalco as they extended their lead to seven (22-15) before winning, The third and final set was much of the same as the Beach and Matadors exchanged leads early on until Long Beach State went on a 4-0 run which gave the hosts an 8-5 lead that they would not relinquish. LBSU continued adding to its lead as the Beach used another 4-0 run to go up 14-8 before rolling out in front by seven (20-13). The Beach kept the Matadors at a distance and went on to win, SCOUTING THE TROJANS Mount Olive comes into the match against Long Beach State with a 10-5 overall record. The Trojans, which beling to the Conference Carolinas, are 7-2 in league matches. The Trojans are led by Robert Poole who has tallied 185 kills on the year for an average of 3.70 per set. Poole is also second on the squad with 1.70 digs per set. Jeff Yasalonis is the team s setter with 519 assists for a 9.61 assists per set average. He also leads the Trojans in digs per set with At the net, Luke Visgitis is the team leaders with 33 total blocks (three solo, 30 block assists) for an average of 0.73 per set. MOUNT OLIVE Long Beach State and Mount Olive will meet for just the second time in program history. The two teams first squared off two years ago in University Park, Pa., on the campus of Penn State. In that match, the Beach collected a three-set sweep of the Trojans. HOME SWEET HOME Over the last three seasons, Long Beach State has put together a 33-3 record inside the Pyramid. That record is good for a winning percentage of.917. The Beach have not lost a home match since March 26, 2016 when they dropped a 3-0 decision to then-no. 2 UCLA. Since then, LBSU owns a 22-0 record when playing at home. A GRAND TIME On Jan. 26, junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco became just the 21st player in Long Beach State men s volleyball program history to record 1,000 career kills. DeFalco has now racked up 1,108 career kills and moved into 18th all time at Long Beach State. HELPING HIMSELF TO THE TOP 10 Junior setter Josh Tuaniga continues to set the pace for Long Beach State this season as he has now accumulated 3,024 career assists as he comes in seventh all-time at LBSU. This season, Tuaniga has dished out 532 helpers to average per set. His average is good for second in the Big West and fourth in the country. He is just one of seven Long Beach State players to reach 3,000 assists in his career. ACES WILD TJ DeFalco is the team leader in service aces as he has racked up 25 aces on the year to average 0.49 per set. His aces per set average is good for second in the Big West and eighth in the nation. He has tallied a season-high four service aces on two occasions this season. In his career, DeFalco has recorded a total of 98 service aces to break into the top 10 at Long Beach State all-time. He is currently in sixth all-time. HITTING THE SPOT As a team, Long Beach State owns a.407 attack percentage which leads the Big West Conference and is tops in the country. Josh Tuaniga is a big part of the Beach s offensive prowess as the junior setter has run the offense dishing out assists per set. In addition to Tuaniga pacing the offense, Long Beach State boasts five starters who are hitting over.400 on the year. Leading the way is freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson who is hitting.507 ( ). Behind him are Tuaniga (.500), redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado (.467), junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco (.412), and junior opposite Kyle Ensing (.402). 1-2 PUNCH The junior duo of TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing as been on point this season as one of the two have led the Beach in kills in every match this season. They have combined for 364 kills on the year as Ensing averages a team-leading 3.63 per set and DeFalco averages The pair also sit atop the Big West in hitting as DeFalco s.412 attack percentage is tops in the league and Ensing s clip of.402 is good for third. On a national level, DeFalco s hitting percentage ranks eighth in the country, while Ensing ranks 11th. BLOCK PARTY Long Beach State has been solid at the net this season as the Beach average 2.33 blocks per set to rank fourth in the league and 15th in the country. Leading the way is redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado who is averaging a team-leading 1.04 blocks per set. Amado s average is good for fourth in the league and 15th in the country. Just last week, Amado posted eight blocks against CSUN as he recorded six against the Matadors on Friday, then tallied another two against them on Sunday. CAN YOU DIG IT? The Beach are averaging 9.49 digs per set this season and are led by TJ DeFalco and Jordan Molina. DeFalco has collected a team-leading 104 digs for an average of 2.04 digs per set, while Molina, the Beach s starting libero, has paced the backrow with 91 digs on the year for an average of 1.98 per set. The duo are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in the Big West, as well as 34th and 38th, respectively, in the country. ALL IN THE FAMILY This week when Long Beach State hosts Mount Olive, freshman outside hitter Ryan Poole will also welcome his older brother, Robert Poole, who is a senior opposite for the Trojans, to the Pyramid. The Poole brothers grew up in Enfield, England and went to high school at St. Ignatius College. In addition to having his brother in Long Beach, Calif., the Poole s parents have made the trip from England to the United States to cheer on their sons.

He led the Beach in kills (17), digs (12), and blocks (5) while hitting.419 ( ) for his 11th career double-double. DeFalco earned weekly honors for the third time in his career. It is the 29th time in program history an LBSU player has earned national recognition. STANDING ROOM ONLY In the Beach s match against No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 17, the Walter Pyramid packed in 4,560 spectators to set a new men s volleyball attendance record. The new record obliterated the previous stanard of 2,828 which was set last season at the MPSF Tournament when LBSU defeated Hawaii to capture the MPSF Championship on April 22. RECORD SETTERS Just a few weeks into the 2018 season and the top-ranked Long Beach State men s volleyball program shattered its own season ticket record. The Long Beach State ticket office has sold 150 men s volleyball season tickets, which is more than a 60 percent increase in season ticket sales from a year ago. A NEW ERA Long Beach State opens 2018 as part of the Big West Conference during its inaugural men s volleyball season. The Big West is the first NCAA Division I conference to sponsor men s volleyball making it the league s 18th sponsored sport. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS During the first week of the season, Long Beach State took part in the UC Santa Barbara ASICS Tournament where the Beach went 3-0 with victories over Princeton (3-0), NJIT (3-1), and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). At the tournament, LBSU received a pair of solid efforts by TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga which led to the duo being named to the All- Tournament Team. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from Long Beach State as he was a member of the United States National Team from He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the following year. In October 2006, Knipe was inducted into the inaugural Long Beach State Men s Volleyball Wall of Honor which recognizes former players who represented 49er men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement.
