This week, will make its third straight NCAA Championship appearance, it s fifth under head coach Alan Knipe, and 10th overall. owns an 8-8 record when playing in the NCAA Championships. The Beach have won one National Championship (1991). Head coach Alan Knipe was a junior middle blocker on the National Championship team and went on to be named to the All-Tournament team. LBSU moved into the No. 1 spot in the national rankings on January 15th and has remained there ever since. The Beach s 24-match winning streak set a new school record for most victories as well as the best start to the season in program history. The Beach have won 29 straight matches inside the Walter Pyramid, which is the second-longest home winning streak in LBSU men s volleyball history. As a team, is leading the nation with a.379 attack percentage. The Beach lead the Big West in hitting percentage (.379), opponent hitting percentage (.181), and service aces per set (1.83). For the third time in his career, head coach Alan Knipe was named USMC/AVCA Division I-II Men s National Coach of the Year. Two weeks ago, Knipe earned Big West Coach of the Year honors. Associate head coach Nick MacRae was selected as the 2018 AVCA Division I-II Men s National Assistant Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. garnered five AVCA All-American selections in TJ DeFalco (First Team), Kyle Ensing (First Team), Josh Tuaniga (First Team), Nick Amado (Second Team), and Simon Anderson (Honorable Mention). Last week at the Big West Conference Tournament, junior setter Josh Tuaniga was named MVP. Junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco was named Big West Conference Player of the Year. This season, both TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing recorded 1,000 kills in their collegiate careers becoming the 21st and 22nd players, respectively, at LBSU to accomplish that feat. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga has now racked up 3,437 career assists and has moved into sixth all time at Long Beach State. He is just the seventh player in LBSU history to reach the 3,000 assists plateau. The Beach boasted a total of six all-conference selections. Nick Amado, TJ DeFalco, Kyle Ensing, and Josh Tuaniga were all named to the First Team, while Simon Anderson and Bjarne Huus were named Honorable Mention. Anderson was also selected to the All-Freshman Team. head coach Alan Knipe collected his 300th career victory with a 3-0 sweep at UC San Diego on April 6. The Beach have now registered 19 three-set sweeps on the year, just one shy of the program record for most sweeps in a single season. LAST TIME OUT Top-ranked showed its grit on Saturday night as the Beach won the inaugural Big West Championship with a convincing 3-0 [25-23, 25-14, 25-19] sweep of No. 6 Hawaii inside the Walter Pyramid to officially punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year. The trip to the NCAA Tournament will be s fifth appearance under head coach Alan Knipe and 10th overall. With the victory, improved to 26-1 on the year and recorded its second undefeated season at home with a 12-0 mark inside the Pyramid. was led by junior setter Josh Tuaniga as he guided the Beach to a.369 attack percentage in the match and distributed 32 assists. For his efforts, Tuaniga was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Tuaniga s solid passing led to another efficient offensive performance for the Beach. The duo of TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing combined for 16 kills as each had eight on the night. Senior outside hitter Bjarne Huus turned in another stout performance as he knocked down seven kills on 12 attempts without committing an error to hit.583. Adding to s offensive attack were Nick Amado (6 kills) and Simon Anderson (4 kills). The middle blockers were also solid at the net combining for 10 blocks as Amado tallied seven and Anderson added three. Ensing was also a force at the net as he posted a season-high six blocks to help lead LBSU to 10.5 total team blocks. The Beach played well on all sides of the ball as the defense limited the Rainbow Warriors (19-8) to just.152 hitting. Huus along with junior libero Jordan Molina led the team with five digs each, while Ensing and DeFalco contributed three apiece. dominated the match from start to finish as the Beach never allowed Hawaii to hit higher than.222 in a single frame. The first set was the closest as the `Bows managed to tie the match five times before the Beach emerged victorious. Hawaii stayed within striking distance, but came away with the win. By the second set, was in the zone and hit a sizzling.688 ( ) as the Beach jumped out in front of the `Bows 10-4 after going on a 5-0 run. From there, continued to string together several scoring runs as the Beach extended their lead to 10 (19-9). The 3-0 victory marked the 19th sweep of the season for, tying the second most three-set wins in a single season. The Beach finished the match with 10 service aces, led by DeFalco s four, marking the second-straight match in which LBSU dominated from the service line with double-figure aces. SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS UC Irvine comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 21-9 overall record and a No. 5 national ranking. The Anteaters dropped a four-set decision to Hawaii in the Big West Conference Tournament semifinals, but went on to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Eaters boast four AVCA All-Americans in Scott Stadick, Karl Apfelbach, Aaron Koubi, and Joel Schneidmiller. Apfelbach leads the Eaters with 3.80 kills per set and a.309 attack percentage, while adding 1.23 digs and 0.77 blocks per set. Stadick is second in the country in blocks per set with 1.32, while hitting.336 on the year. Koubi is hitting.336 while averaging 2.78 kills per set to go along with 1.34 digs per set, while Schneidmiller, the Big West Freshman of the Year, averages 2.61 kills per set. SERIES VS. UC IRVINE and UC Irvine have met 71 times before and the Beach lead the all-time series LBSU has won the last seven meetings against the Anteaters. The last time UCI defeated LBSU was in 2015 in Irvine. The Beach own a 5-3 record over the Eaters in neutral site contests. SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES Ohio State owns a No. 6 ranking and is 24-5 on the year. The Buckeyes won the MIVA Tournament earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State defeated King in a three-set sweep on April 26 to advance to the Opening Round Match against UC Irvine. The Buckeyes are led by a trio of AVCA All-Americans in Nicolas Szerszen, Maxime Hervoir, and Sanil Thomas. Szerszen leads the team with 3.72 kills per set on.383 hitting, while adding a team-best 2.16 digs per set. He also owns 0.59 service aces per set. Hervoir is the Buckeyes second leading scorer with 3.30 kills per set and a.326 attack percentage. He also averages 1.49 digs and 0.47 blocks per set. Thomas is the team s setter as he averages assists per set to go along with 1.85 digs per set. He has led the Buckeyes to a.345 team attack percentage this season. SERIES VS. OHIO STATE and Ohio State have previously met 12 times and the Beach lead the all-time series LBSU won the first 10 meetings in program history, but Ohio State has won the last two, including a 3-1 win a year ago in the Final Four which ended LBSU s season. The Beach are 2-0 when playing the Buckeyes on neutral territory. REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK Since the start of the 2018 season, the Beach have been solid posting an impressive 26-1 record with 19 three-set sweeps. The hot start cemented the 2018 squad in the men s volleyball record book as their 24-straight wins set a new program record for longest winning streak as well as best start to the season. HOME SWEET HOME Over the last three seasons, has put together a 39-3 record inside the Pyramid. That record is good for a winning percentage of.929. The Beach have not lost a home match since March 26, 2016 when they dropped a 3-0 decision to then-no. 2 UCLA. Since then, LBSU owns a 29-0 record when playing at home, which is the second-best home winning streak in program history behind 32 straight home wins which spanned four seasons ( ). This season saw both TJ DeFalco and Kyle Ensing reach 1,000 career kills. DeFalco hit the milestone on Jan. 26 becoming the 21st player in program history to do so. Ensing follwed suit three months later recording his 1,000th kill on April 14 to become the 22nd player at LBSU to reach that feat. 300 AND COUNTING With a 3-0 victory at UC San Diego on April 6, head coach Alan Knipe recorded his 300th career victory at the helm of the program. He is just the second men s volleyball head coach in program history to reach the 300-win plateau, joining his former head coach Ray Ratelle who retired after 19 seasons with a record at the helm of the Beach. Knipe owns a career winning percentage of.674 which is the highest winning percentage of all head coaches in LBSU men s volleyball program history. HELPING HIMSELF TO THE TOP 10 Junior setter Josh Tuaniga continues to set the pace for this season as he has now accumulated 3,437 career assists to rank sixth all-time at LBSU. This season, Tuaniga has dished out 945 helpers to average per set. His average is good for third in the Big West and sixth in the country. He is just one of seven players to reach 3,000 assists in his career. ACES WILD TJ DeFalco is the team leader in service aces as he has racked up 51 aces on the year to average 0.55 per set. His aces per set average leads the Big West and is good for fifth in the nation. His 51 aces set a new single-season record among juniors at LBSU. DeFalco has tallied a season-high five service aces on two occasions thus far, most recently notching five against No. 4 UC Irvine. In his career, DeFalco has recorded a total of 124 service aces to rank fourth all-time at Long Beach State. He is six away from moving into third place. HITTING THE SPOT As a team, owns a.379 attack percentage which leads the Big West Conference and is tops in the country. Josh Tuaniga is a big part of the Beach s offensive prowess as the junior setter has run the offense dishing out assists per set. In addition to Tuaniga pacing the offense, boasts five starters who are hitting over.300 on the year. Freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson leads the way with a.490 attack percentage ( ). Coming in behind him are Tuaniga (.482), redshirt junior Nick Amado (.462), junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco (.375), and junior opposite Kyle Ensing (.357). CAN YOU DIG IT? The Beach are averaging 9.43 digs per set this season to rank second in the Big West and 16th in the nation. LBSU is led by junior libero Jordan Molina. Molina leads a trio of Beach players who all rank in the top 10 in the conference in digs per set. Molina s 2.06 digs per set average is good for fourth in the league and 27th in the nation, while teammates TJ DeFalco (1.84) and Josh Tuaniga (1.78) rank sixth and eighth, respectively. BLOCK PARTY has been solid at the net this season as the Beach average 2.45 blocks per set to rank second in the league and seventh in the country. Leading the way is redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado who is averaging 1.18 blocks per set. Amado s average is good for second in the league and fifth in the country. In addition, junior opposite Kyle Ensing has been a force at the net all season as he averages 0.86 blocks per set to rank ninth in the Big West, while freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson comes in 10th in the conference with an average of ALAN KNIPE SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION THROUGH 2023 SEASON Top-ranked men s volleyball head coach Alan Knipe has signed a contract extension through the 2023 season, LBSU Athletics Director Andy Fee announced. Both President Conoley and I think that Alan has done an unbelievable job, Fee said of extending Knipe s contract. We couldn t be more thrilled to keep him here at. I know that he ll continue to lead our men s volleyball program to even more success, and most importantly, do so in the right way. Knipe is currently in his 15th season at the helm of the men s volleyball program and has led the Beach to a No. 1 ranking in the country. This week, the Beach will take their 26-1 record to the NCAA Championships in a quest for the program s second National Championship. Heading into the Final Four, Knipe has led to the Big West Championship in the inaugural season as the Beach won a program-record 24-straight matches en route to his being named Big West Coach of the Year. During the regular season, Knipe earned his 300th career victory, becoming just the second head coach in men s volleyball program history to accomplish that feat. During his time at the Beach, Knipe has coached four National Players of the Year, one AVCA Newcomer of the Year, 47 All-America selections, 58 All-MPSF selections, and six All-Big West selections. He has also led to 13 MPSF Tournaments, one Big West Tournament, and five NCAA Final Four appearances. Knipe is a two-time AVCA National Coach of the Year (2004, 2017), a two-time MPSF Coach of the Year (2008, 2017) and has led LBSU to a record for a.674 winning percentage -- the highest winning percentage of any men s volleyball head coach at the Beach.

Knipe has served as head coach at since 2001, with a brief hiatus from in which he coached the U.S. Men s National Team. During his tenure at the helm of the U.S. Men s National Team, Knipe guided the Americans to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they advanced to the knockout round after finishing first in Pool B, which also featured Brazil and Russia, which were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, respectively. With Knipe leading the squad, the United States also qualified for the World League Finals on three occasions (2009, 2011, and 2012). In 2012, they claimed the FIVB World League silver medal, marking their second-best finish since the World League began in Additionally, the U.S. won the gold medal at the 2012 NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament, securing their eighth consecutive berth to the Olympics. Knipe s ties to go back to his days as a student-athlete ( ) as he played under Ray Ratelle and was a key member of the Beach s 1991 National Championship team. As a student-athlete at LBSU, Knipe received numerous honors including all-conference (First Team, 1992), All-American (First Team, 1992; Second Team, 1991), and All-NCAA Tournament (1991) accolades. A member of the Men s Volleyball Wall of Honor, which recognizes former players who represented LBSU men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement, Knipe was part of the inaugural class in He was also inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in MOVIN ON UP Nick MacRae has been a staple on the Long Beach State men s volleyball bench for the last five seasons as, first the director of operations, then an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. After helping the Beach to five MPSF Tournament appearances, one MPSF Tournament Championship, back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances, and most recently, a No. 1 national ranking, MacRae has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. MacRae is in the midst of his sixth season with the Long Beach State men s volleyball program and has helped guide the Beach to a 19-0 overall record and a 4-0 Big West Conference ledger thus far. With MacRae on the bench, has boasted two National Players of the Year, nine AVCA All-Americans, and 13 MPSF All-Conference selections. MacRae has been an integral part of s success and just a year ago was awarded the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2017 Thirty Under 30 Award which honors up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. He was chosen as one of 30 recipients out of nearly 200 nominations. During MacRae s time as assistant coach, Long Beach State has put together a overall record for a winning percentage of.748. Additionally, the Beach have compiled a conference record of (.700). Furthermore, MacRae served as the technical coordinator for the USA Men s Pan America Team and helped the U.S. win a Gold Medal in the Dominican Republic in The squad followed that with a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Pan Am Games in Mexico City. MacRae is a Long Beach, Calif., native and excelled on the court at Wilson High School before playing at Long Beach State. WALL OF HONOR The LBSU men s volleyball program announced the addition of two members to the Wall of Honor. At the annual Randy Sandefur Memorial Golf Tournament, Robert Kutsch and Tom Wade were indcuted. The two major induction criteria for the Wall of Honor, as outlined by the committee are as follows: the player must have represented men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement and truly embodied the passion, commitment, and loyalty that encompass a 49er men s volleyball player. WHO SAYS YOU CAN T GO HOME? When played at Hawaii to close out the regular season, freshman outside hitter Ethan Siegfried returned to his hometown of Honolulu and made a splash. Siegfried came off the bench and tallied a career-high three service aces to help lift LBSU past Hawaii and extend the Beach s winning streak to 24. GENE POOLE On March 7 when hosted Mount Olive, freshman outside hitter Ryan Poole made his collegiate debut against his older brother, Robert Poole, who is a senior opposite for the Trojans. The younger Poole had a solid outing as he came off the bench and tallied three kills on four attempts with just one miscue to hit.500 in the match. He also added a block assist in the Beach s 3-0 sweep over Mount Olive. NATIONAL RECOGNITION For his excellent performance against No. 2 UCLA, junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco was named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week. He led the Beach in kills (17), digs (12), and blocks (5) while hitting.419 ( ) for his 11th career double-double. DeFalco earned weekly honors for the third time in his career. It is the 29th time in program history an LBSU player has earned national recognition. STANDING ROOM ONLY In the Beach s match against No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 17, the Walter Pyramid packed in 4,560 spectators to set a new men s volleyball attendance record. The new record obliterated the previous standard of 2,828 which was set last season at the MPSF Tournament when LBSU defeated Hawaii to capture the MPSF Championship on April 22. After having wrapped up its regular season home schedule with a match against UC San Diego last week, Long Beach State averaged 1,888 spectators per contest. This average more than doubled the previous attendance mark. RECORD SETTERS Just a few weeks into the 2018 season and the top-ranked men s volleyball program shattered its own season ticket record. The ticket office has sold 150 men s volleyball season tickets, which is more than a 60 percent increase in season ticket sales from a year ago.

MPSF Finals (5th) MPSF Finals A year ago, Knipe led the Beach to one of their best seasons as finished the year with a 27-4 overall 2006 record and (T4th) MPSF Finals was 16-2 in MPSF action en route to winning the team s first-ever MPSF Tournament Championship. He has served as head coach of the Beach since 2001, with a brief hiatus from in which he coached the 2015 U.S. Men s (7th) MPSF Quarterfinals National Team (T2nd) NCAA Semifinals As head coach of the Beach, Knipe has been named AVCA National Coach of the Year on two occasions (2004 and 2017) and MPSF Coach of the Year twice (2008 and 2017). He has coached four National Players of the Year in TJ DeFalco, (AVCA, 2017) Taylor Crabb (AVCA, 2013), Paul Lotman (AVCA, 2008) 2017 and Tyler Hildebrand (Volleyball Magazine, 2006) (T1st) MPSF Semifinals NCAA Semifinals During his tenure as head coach of the U.S. Men s National Team, Knipe guided the Americans to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympic Games in London as they advanced to the knockout round after finishing first in Pool B, which also featured Brazil and Russia, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, respectively. With Knipe at the helm, the United States also qualified for the World League Finals on three occasions (2009, 2011 and 2012). In 2012, they claimed the FIVB World League silver medal, marking their secondbest finish since the World League began in Additionally, the U.S. won the gold medal at the 2012 NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament, securing their eighth consecutive berth to the Olympics. Knipe played three years ( ) at under Ray Ratelle, where he was a key member of the 49ers 1991 National Championship team. In the1991 title match, Knipe racked up 16 kills, nine digs, eight blocks and hit.636 ( ) as LBSU topped USC, 3-1. As a student-athlete at LBSU, Knipe received numerous honors including all-conference (First Team, 1992), All-American (Frist Team, 1992; Second Team, 1991) and All-NCAA Tournament (1991) accolades. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from as he was a member of the United States National Team from He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the following year. In October 2006, Knipe was inducted into the inaugural Men s Volleyball Wall of Honor which recognizes former players who represented 49er men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement. He was also inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in Knipe graduated from Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., and spent one year at Orange Coast College before transferring to, where he received his bachelor s degree in speech communications in Knipe and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Aidan and Evan.
