GCU head coach, Matt Werle after the 2018 home opener NEW YEAR NEW CONFERENCE After spending the last few seasons in the MIVA the Lopes transitioned to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in 2018 The conference was pegged as one of the strongest in the country going into 2018 with six of seven teams landing in the preseason Top-15 The move comes after a conference realignment and the addition of the Big West This season the MPSF added GCU along with Concordia-Irvine while UC San Diego, Cal Baptist, CSUN, UC Santa Barbara, Hawai i and Long Beach State departed The Lopes were picked to finish sixth in the MPSF Preseason Coaches Poll 2017 GOES DOWN IN HISTORY PRESEASON MPSF COACHES POLL Rank Team (First-Place) Points 1 BYU (4) 33 2 UCLA (2) 32 3T Pepperdine 22 3T Stanford 22 5 USC (1) 18 6 Grand Canyon 14 7 Concordia 6 The 2017 season put the Lopes on the map when it comes to men s volleyball GCU finished with a record, the best mark in porgram history During the last few weeks of the season the Lopes cracked the AVCA Top-15 poll for the first time and would rise to as high as No 13 Upon leaving the MIVA GCU would climb to new postseason heights as well They would host a MIVA tournament game, go on to win, advance to the semi-finals, win, then go on to face No 1 Ohio State in the finals The Buckeyes took the match 3-1 and would later go on to win the NCAA Championship but the Lopes showed they can play with the best The AVCA agreed as GCU came into 2018 ranked No 15 This was the first time the program had ever landed on the AVCA Top-15 Preseason Coaches Poll LOPES HIT THE GROUND RUNNING GCU has shown no sign of slowing down after coming off the best year in program history The Lopes are off to an 11-5 start in 2018, the best such start in the program s nine year existence The previous best start was a 9-3 record back in 2016 The team has failed to drop back-to-back matches and has had wins streaks of five and four matches Four losses on the year have come at the hands Top-10 teams; current No 2 UCLA, No 3 Hawaii No 5 UCI and No 6 BYU To go along with the impressive start, the Lopes have finished teams in commanding fashion 2018 has featured five sweeps and only three five set matches, two of which GCU came out on top FEELING AT HOME AWAY FROM HOME GCU has posted a perfect road record to start 2018 going 5-0 The Lopes started the year with three straight on the road before going to Nashville for a neutral site tournmanet where they went 2-1 After a breif home stand GCU travled to the midwest and claimed two more wins in comeback fashion The move to the MPSF means less distance on road games but hostile enviornments GCU will face BYU, UCLA and Stanford on the road All programs have historically great fan bases and will test the Lopes often GCU s hot start bodes well and shows the experience of the upper-classman heavy team 4

year which includes three redshirt seniors The team may not be the biggest, strongest or quickest but they make up for it in experience and volleyball IQ Of the 11 upper-classmen eight have been with the Lopes their entire career They know the in s and out s of the system the intricacies of the game and are familiar with Antelope Gym and the enviornment The squad doesn t have one set leader who is the vocal captain or is the person everyone turns to Instead, they have options and can turn to any number of players On any given night a different player can step up for the Lopes and help lead the team to victory Whether it is keeping the team focused when they are up or rallying the guys for a comeback, the depth of leadership on this team has to be noted This culture has been established by the upper-classmen and carries down to the incoming recruits NATIONAL RECGONITION Setter, Puna Kaniho was honored as the Off the Block/Springbak Inc National Player of the Month for January The honor is the only monthly award in NCAA men s volleyball and is voted on by the fans Players from around the country are selected and split up into five ballots according to their position Fans are asked to vote with the winners of the five sections and an at large candidate moving on Fans then vote in the championship round to determine who earns the honor Kaniho received nearly 744 votes and 386 percent of the total votes in the first round before receiving nearly 1,000 votes and 367 percent of total votes in the championship The setter edged out Long Beach State All-American Kyle Ensing by 73 votes The Hawaiian native was instrumental in helping GCU to their best start in program history In January he averaged 1007 assists per set and totaled 282 assists which ranks sixth best in the country Kaniho has helped guide GCU to a program best No 10 ranking and a 329 attack percentage, a mark that was fifth best in the nation The award is one of two determined by the fans The other being the Fan Choice National Player of the Year which comes at the end of the season and is a 64-player bracket-style tournament where the winner is determined through online voting With the player of the month honor, Kaniho will receive an automatic berth to the Fan Choice National Player of the Year tournament KING OF BLOCKS With three blocks against Stanford on Feb 17, redshirt senior Ashton King became GCU s all-time leading blocker King led the Lopes in total blocks in 2017 and has kept the lead throughout 2018 He passed Christian Ward and his 369 total blocks and now sits alone atop GCU record books With a senior heavy squad, there are bound to be a few more names on the Lopes leaderboard In addition to King, Shalev Saada currently sits at thrid and fifth in all-time kills and aces, Puna Kaniho ranks fourth in assits and Sky Engleman has moved into third for all-time digs WILLIAMS WELCOMES LOPES TO MPSF Cody Williams earned the first MPSF honor of the year in 2018 when he was selected as the Week 1 MPSF Offesnive Player of the Week Williams started his season off strong with 16 kills and a 481 hitting percentage in the season opener at Barton He would then go on to have a career day at George Mason on Jan 5 when he tied a career-high in kills with 18 and set new career-highs with four aces and six blocks In the second tilt with George Mason the senior added nine kills and was instrumental in earning the three-set sweep The Anthem native ended his weekend with 43 kills while hitting 453 He also added six aces, eight digs and 10 blocks His 43 kills were third most in conference (min 10 sets played) and he led the MPSF in hitting percentage among players that have 10 or more sets Lastly, his six aces were second most among all conference members POLLING WELL After spending the better part of eight seasons not cracking the AVCA Dvision I/II Top-15 Coaches Poll, 2018 hasn t seen a week that didn t feature the Lopes GCU came into 2018 as the No 15 team on the Preseason Poll which they had never been featured on Week-by-week the Lopes have seen a steady increase in their ranking, breaking program records along the way After the first week, GCU was ranked No 13 which tied the best ranking in program history They would go on to break that mark after earning the No 12 ranking and continued the trend of moving up one spot through the next couple of weeks GCU currently sits at No 12 nationally which is two spots lower than the program best ranking of No 10 The Lopes currently have three more matchups against Top-15 schools still on their schedule All teams are in the MPSF and will feature home and away tilts The Lopes are currently 1-4 against Top-15 oppoenents 5
