Something has to give. The Women of Troy just knocked off the top-ranked team in the country and have not lost to an Oregon team at home in 21 meetings. The last time the Ducks flew back to Eugene with a victory over USC was in The second-ranked Trojans continue to climb the charts following a 3-1 victory over crosstown rival UCLA, but the Ducks pose different challenge. The experienced squad is led by senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma who ranks second in the Pac-12 for kills (4.62 kps) but is at the top of the list for service aces (0.45 saps) and points (5.31 pps). The Ducks top the conference in kills (15.74 kps), assists (14.65 aps), but also have the best hitting percentage (.326) thanks to junior setter Lauren Plum who leads the league in assists (12.88 aps). Oregon has won its last 10 straight sets not to mention 10 straight matches and is coming off a 3-0 sweep over conference rival Oregon State on Wednesday. The last time USC took on the Ducks, it was a sweep for the Trojans who won, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23, on Nov. 12, 2011, in Eugene, Ore. Oregon put up a fight and went down after four sets the last time it visited Galen Center. If the Women of Troy are to keep their perfect record in tact and extend their winning streak over the Ducks, they will have to find a way to slow down the Oregon offense. 3 USC Head Coach Mick Haley Mick Haley is in his 12th season as head coach at USC as he continues to add to the rich heritage of one of the most successful women s volleyball programs in the nation. During his tenure at USC, Haley has guided his teams to two national championships (2002 and 2003), six NCAA Final Four appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2011) and 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. USC has finished the season ranked nationally in the top five a total of seven of 11 times under Haley. He has posted an impressive overall record of (.823) while going (.783) in Pac-12 Conference play. Haley was named 2011 Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year, the first time at USC that he has earned that honor. Haley s 2003 squad won the program s sixth title overall and third NCAA title. Haley guided that team to a perfect 35-0 record (only the fourth team to ever accomplish the feat). He earned the most prestigious honor among collegiate coaches as the AVCA Division I Coach of the Year. As a two-time national championship head coach at Texas and four-year United States National Team coach, Haley took the helm of the Trojan program at the start of the 2001 season. He brought a tradition of excellence as one of the elite coaches in the game with him to a University with a rich tradition of its own. He earned a bachelor s degree in education from Ball State in 1965 and a master s degree in education in 1966 from Southern Illinois. Haley and his wife, Carrie, have a daughter, Halie, 22, and a son, Hunter, 24. He also has a son, Heath, 35, and a daughter, Heather, 40, from a previous marriage, and five grandchildren, Taylor, 22, Harrison, 12, Hayley, 10, Amelia, 3 and Michael, 1. The original membership consisted of four schools - the University of California at Berkeley, Washington, the Oregon, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). All still are charter members of the Conference. Pacific Coast Conference play began in 1916 and, one year later, Washington State College (now Washington State) was accepted into the league, with Stanford following in In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Idaho. In 1924, the University of Montana joined the league roster, and in 1928, the PCC grew to 10 members with the addition of UCLA. The Pacific Coast Conference competed as a 10-member league until 1950, with the exception of when World War II curtailed intercollegiate athletic competition to a minimum. During that time, the league s first commissioner was named. Edwin N. Atherton was Commissioner in 1940 and was succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt in In 1950, Montana resigned from the Conference and joined the Mountain States Conference. The PCC continued as a nineteam Conference through In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and the Athletic Association of Western Universities was formed and Thomas J. Hamilton was appointed Commissioner of the new league. The original AAWU membership included California, Stanford, Southern California, UCLA and Washington. Washington State joined the membership in 1962, while Oregon and Oregon State joined in Under Hamilton s watch, the name Pacific-8 Conference was adopted in In 1971, Wiles Hallock took over as Commissioner of the Pac-8. Ten years later, on July 1, 1978, the Arizona and Arizona State were admitted to the league and the Pacific-10 Conference became a reality. In , the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women s sports. Since then, the Conference has been considered the premiere league in women s athletics, securing the most NCAA titles in women s sports of any conference nearly every year. Thomas C. Hansen was named the Commissioner of the Pac- 10 in 1983, a role he would hold for 26 years until Hansen was succeeded by current Commissioner Larry Scott, who took on the new role in July During the academic year, Scott helped deliver monumental changes that transformed the Conference into a modern 12-team league. The Conference expanded to add two more teams, agreed to equal revenue sharing for the first time in Conference history, created two divisions - the North and the South, for football only, established a Football Championship Game for the first time ever, secured a landmark media rights deal that dramatically increased national exposure and revenue for each school and established the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Digital Network that guaranteed enhanced exposure across all sports. Colorado accepted its invitation to join the Pac-12 on June 11, 2010, and on June 17, 2010, the Utah agreed to join the Conference. The Buffaloes and Utes officially became the 11th and 12th members of the Conference July 1, 2011, the first additions to the league since During the 33 years between expansions, Conference teams claimed 258 NCAA titles, including 130 women s and 128 men s. Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men s sports and 11 women s sports. Additionally, the Conference is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men s sports and three women s sports. The Pac-12 Conference offices are located 25 miles east of San Francisco in Walnut Creek, Calif.

With the arrival of the new Pac-12 Networks, over 80 conference events are scheduled for broadcast, this fall. USC had the honor and privilege of being part of the first-ever live women s volleyball event on the new networks on Tuesday, Aug. 28, when it hosted Jiangsu China in an exhibition match. The Trojans are slated to appear 13 times on Pac-12 Networks; five times at Galen Center, and eight times as the road team. The Sept. 19 rivalry match against defending NCAA champion UCLA was broadcast by ESPNU with Sam Gore and Karch Kiraly. INTERNATIONAL TREATY: The Women of Troy waded into international waters in the summer of 2012 as they traveled to Europe May 25-June 5 and competed in their offseason against several top-level international squads. USC made visits to Italy, Slovenia, and Serbia, during which it played two matches each against the Italian Junior National Team, the Slovenian National Team, and one of Serbia s top club teams. Senior middle blocker Natasa Siljkovic, who is a native of Uzice, Serbia, served as the perfect tour guide for the Women of Troy while they were on the Serbian leg of the summer excursion. In addition, the Trojans also hosted the top club from China (Jiangsu) for an exhibition match at the Galen Center on Aug. 28. PLAYING FOR PERFECTION: USC has gone unbeaten in preseason tournaments six times under head coach Mick Haley. In four of the previous five times, the Trojans advanced at least as far as the NCAA semifinals. Two of those times, they went on to win the national championship (2002, 03). HOME, SWEET HOME: The Trojans have enjoyed the comforts of home to the tune of an 84-9 (.903) all-time record at the Galen Center. Unfortunately, when it comes to the volleyball court, the Women of Troy are less than hospitable to their visitors. The Trojans went 12-1 in home matches in 2011 and are 7-0 on the season, so far. In 2007, USC put up a 19-0 mark at home on the way to an appearance in the NCAA national semifinal match. POWER OF THE PAC: The Pac-12 is the toughest conference in collegiate women s volleyball and has the championships and the rankings to prove it. Including defending NCAA champion UCLA, and USC s three titles (1980, 2002, 2003), the conference holds 14 NCAA titles. This season, six teams were ranked in the AVCA s preseason rankings. The Bruins were ranked No. 1 by the coaches while the Trojans followed at No. 5. Stanford held the No. 6 spot with Washington coming in at No. 14 to give the league four teams in the top 15 alone. California was tabbed 17th with Oregon at No. 20 for six teams in the top 20. Arizona also received votes in the first poll of the season but was not ranked. TROJAN OLYMPIC HERITAGE: This summer, the Women of Troy added three silver medals to its rich history of Olympic success as former players Jennifer Kessy, April Ross, and Nicole Davis each took the podium in London. Kessy and Ross made an incredible run to the gold-medal match and earned silver after a hard-fought battle against three-time Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings. Davis took home her second silver medal in indoor volleyball where team USA faced Brazil in a rematch of the 2008 Beijing title match. The USC athletic department has produced more gold medalists and overall medalists than any other U.S. university. Including this year s participants, the USC women s volleyball program has produced 24 Olympians, beginning in 1964 with Patti Lucas-Bright. The Trojans will honor this year s medal winners in special ceremonies during the Oct. 5-7 weekend when they host Arizona and Arizona State. TWICE IS NICE FOR BRICIO: Freshman OH Samantha Bricio became the firstever USC player to be named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week when she was selected following her performance at the Texas A&M Invitational. Bricio had a coming-out party in College Station, Texas, when she helped the Women of Troy to a 3-0 record to open the season. She posted 16 kills and 10 digs to pace the Trojans in a 3-0 sweep of Texas State on August 25, and was named the tournament MVP. One week later, she was selected for the award for a second

7 consecutive week after she helped the Trojans to a 3-0 weekend at the Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational where she was also honored as an all-tournament team selection. YOUNG GUNS: The Trojans will look for early contributions from its stable of talented freshmen. With a squad of just 13 players, and the need to replace some major firepower along the net, first year and second-year players will be called upon to play roles if USC is to successfully defend its Pac-12 title. This fall, the Women of Troy welcome in setter Cinnamon Sary (Newport Beach, Calif.), outside hitter Samantha Bricio (Guadalajara, Mexico), middle blocker Alicia Ogoms (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), and outside hitter Kiara Wright (Houston, Texas) to the Trojan Family. TOURNAMENT HONORS: In just her first-ever collegiate tournament, freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio was named the MVP of the Texas A&M Invitational. Junior libero Natalie Hagglund and senior opposite hitter Katie Fuller joined Bricio as members of the all-tournament team. The same three players were named to the all-tournament team of the Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational. This time, Fuller was tabbed for MVP honors. In the Trojans third tournament, the same three players were honored for their performances in the USC Classic Tournament with Fuller chosen as the MVP for a second consecutive time. In a little history repeating, Bricio was named the MVP of the TCU Molten Invitational and was joined once again by Hagglund and Fuller on the all-tournament team. FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Trojans celebrated the first-ever Pac-12 championship a year ago as they completed a 20-2 record in league play. The first-ever Pac- 12 crown was USC s seventh conference title overall. The Women of Troy also claimed Pac-10 titles in 2000, 02, and 03. The Trojans last of six national titles came in 2003 when the squad went 35-0 to win the second of back-to-back championships. PERENIAL POSTSEASON PARTY-GOERS: Last December, USC made its 34th postseason appearance since the program s inception in The Women of Troy have won six national championships (1976, 1977, 1980, 1981, 2002 and 2003) and have appeared in back-to-back national semifinal matches; three times in the last five years, and seven times in the last 12 seasons marked the first back-to-back final four appearances for the Trojans since they made three straight appearances from It was USC s 21st consecutive selection to the NCAA Tournament where it is (.728) overall. The Trojans are (.776) overall in postseason play. ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS: The Women of Troy have had 64 All-America selections in their storied history. Last year, USC added four more to its list of award winners as Kendall Bateman, Alex Jupiter, Natalie Hagglund, and Lauren Williams were each named to All-America teams. Jupiter was chosen as the Pac-12 Player of the Year and the AVCA National Player of the Year, while Bateman was named the Pac-12 Setter of the Year, and Hagglund was selected as the Pac-12 Libero of the Year. Hagglund became USC s first-ever All-American libero. TEXAS TWO STEP: The USC roster features a pair of outside hitters who hail from the state of Texas. Junior Sara Shaw comes from Austin where she attended Westlake HS and freshman Kiara Wright is from Houston where she prepped at Clear Lake HS. Previously, both Shaw and All-American middle blocker Lauren Williams shared that distinction. TROJANS TO HOST ALUMNI NIGHT: The Women of Troy will honor its history with a special Alumni Night on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Galen Center when USC faces Utah at 6 p.m. PT. The day will begin with a pre-match dinner that will highlight the accomplishments of past Trojans as well as long-time athletic trainer Sue Lerner who retired after the 2011 season. A special post-match reception will follow. TEXAS TOAST: Outside hitters Sara Shaw and Kiara Wright will each be the toast of the town when the Trojans roll into Texas for pre-league tournaments, this fall. The Women of Troy played in the Texas A&M Invitational (Aug ) to open the year at College Station, Texas, and return to the Lone Star State for the last of four tournaments when it heads to Fort Worth, Texas, for TCU s Molten Invitational Tournament (Sept ). In fact, she wears the same red bow for every match she plays for good luck. One day, coming out of class, she found the red bow tied to her bike. Not knowing where it came from, she left it there until she one day decided that she wanted to wear a bow in her hair. Since that day, it has been her personal good-luck charm. #8 OH, CANADA: Freshman middle blocker Alicia Ogoms is the first-ever scholarship volleyball player at USC to hail from Canada. The 6-4 frosh is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she attended St. Mary s. #15 VOLLEYBALL PEDIGREE: Senior defensive specialist Erin Yoder is the daughter to Bob Yoder, a two-time All-American player on the USC men s volleyball team and part of the 1977 national championship squad. Her father went on to coach the men s team ( ) to five NCAA final four appearances and the 1988 national championship. #20 RESIDENT POET LAUREATE: Sophomore opposite/setter Emily Young often thinks in rhyme and prose. The good thing for everyone else is that she will often write down her thoughts in the form of a poem. This fall, the second-year Illinois transplant will blog for ESPNW and may just share some of her poetry with the sporting world. Visit and click on College Sports to find hers and many other collegiate blogs. #22 NICKEL AND DIMED: Senior opposite hitter Katie Fuller is the younger cousin of bluegrass mandolinist and singer Chris Thile of Nickel Creek fame. Thile is now a member of the progressive bluegrass quintet known as the Punch Brothers.
