4 2006 OUTLOOK With essentially the same group of student-athletes that played in front of a then-ncaa record crowd in Omaha, Neb., last December in the Regional Semifinal, head coach Andy Banachowski takes aim at a return trip to Omaha, site of the 2006 NCAA Division I Semifinals and Finals. The Bruins lose just one starter, Nancy Barba, from last year s Sweet Sixteen squad and return both of the team s fi rst-team All-Pac- 10 selections in senior middle blocker Nana Meriwether and sophomore setter Nellie Spicer. Entering the fray for 2006 will be fi ve newcomers, including sophomore transfer Ali Daley, who was the Big West Freshman of the Year at Long Beach State last season. SETTERS Coming off of a season that saw Nellie Spicer become the third Bruin in history to earn AVCA National Player of the Week honors, UCLA s starting setter returns for her sophomore campaign. Last season, she was selected for first-team All-Pac-10 and Pac-10 All-Freshman recognition after averaging assists per game to go with a 0.67 blocks per-game average and 2.80 digs per game. I m looking forward to seeing Nellie take the reins from the opening day of camp, said UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski. Last season, she established herself as a premier setter in the country and we made a lot of progress with our timing and tempo during spring practice. Sharing setting duties with Spicer will be sophomore transfer Nikki Jagd. Jagd played in 38 games over 21 matches during her freshman campaign at Pacific last season and saw spot duty over much of the season, but saw significant action against both top-ranked Nebraska in mid-september and against UC Davis in early October. Nikki will be an important back-up to Nellie at setter this season, said Banachowski. Sophomores Jade Machado and Kaitlin Sather will both do some setting on the practice court and in game situations. Machado picked up valuable setting experience in June when Spicer was unable to play due to injury for part of UCLA s European Tour. OUTSIDE HITTERS The Bruins return three starting outside hitters from last year s team: senior co-captain Katie Carter, junior Rachell Johnson and sophomore Kaitlin Sather. Carter played in 93 of the team s 114 games as a junior, averaging 2.66 kills per game to go along with a 0.77 blocks per-game average. Katie had a great spring for us, said Banachowski, She really improved her timing on the quick ball to the outside and expanded her versatility, showing she can be effective on the right side, which will allow us to make some defensive adjustments with our block this season. Sather, a fi rst-team Pac-10 All-Freshman selection last season, led the Bruins with 412 kills while contributing 2.55 digs per game UCLA WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL and a team-high points on the season. Kaitlin matured nicely through spring practice, said Banachowski. She has gotten stronger and is hitting a heavier ball. She is seeing the court better, and we will be counting on her both on the left and right sides. Johnson improved sharply as the 2005 season progressed, playing in 75 games and finishing the season with the secondbest kill per-game average on the team with She returns for her junior season with a solid year of game experience under her belt. Johnson has played both on the outside and in the middle during her Bruin career, and could move back to the middle for the 2006 season. Rachell is capable of playing either outside position, said Banachowski. She had some big-time kills last year and we may look to work her in the middle because of her lateral quickness. Returning after a year away from volleyball, Becky (Green) Mehring looks to recapture the form that made her the team s kill leader as a sophomore in Green averaged 3.00 kills per game and 2.10 digs, and was second on the team with points. After getting married and having a baby over the last 18 months, Mehring is ready to return to volleyball. Becky has had a nice comeback so far in training, said Banachowski. It will be good to have her back on the court, since she is an experienced left side hitter, good defender and a good passer. She could be the key to our success this season. After fi ghting injuries through much of last season, Colby Lyman could see action either on the outside or in the back row during The senior co-captain played in just 55 games last season, downing 99 kills but contributing 2.84 digs per game and 0.49 blocks per game. Nellie Spicer earned All-Pac-10 and AVCA National Player of the Week honors last season. Colby s physical condition will dictate how much she can play in the front court this season, said Banachowski. I am a big believer in Colby s ability to score and block on the right side. Hopefully she will be able to overcome her foot problem, but if not she will be a strong contender for the libero position. Three newcomers will join the group on the outside with sophomore Ali Daley joining a pair of freshmen in Emily Clements and Diana Douglas. Daley was named the 2005 Big West Freshman of the Year last season at Long Beach State, posting a 3.43 kills per-game average to go along with 2.21 digs per game and 418 points on the season. We expect Ali to contribute right away, said Banachowski. She brings impressive credentials with a powerful arm and a solid hitting percentage. She will be in the mix for playing time at outside hitter.

5 Clements comes to UCLA from New Orleans, where she starred at Isidore Newman High School before being displaced to Episcopal High School in Houston for her senior season due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Being left-handed, Emily is comfortable on the right side, is a good blocker and passer and just needs to adjust to the speed of the college game, said Banachowski. Diana will also be a welcome addition to the team, adding depth to our outside hitting corps. MIDDLE BLOCKERS Leading UCLA s group of middles is the Bruins top returning player, senior Nana Meriwether. A third-team AVCA All-American last year, Meriwether also earned fi rst-team All-Pac- 10 honors and was the conference s blocks leader for the 2005 season, checking in at 1.73 per game. Off-season shoulder surgery curtailed her participation in spring practice, but Meriwether is expected to be back on the court at full strength for the start of the season on August 26. Nana was very impressive with her hitting and blocking at the end of last season, said Banachowski. We expect her to regain that form very quickly and hold down a starting middle blocker spot this season. With the loss of Nancy Barba to graduation, the second middle blocker spot will be up for competition between Meghan Schoen, Elise Carstensen and Stacy Dominguez. Schoen was a key part of UCLA s early-season action in 2005 before tearing an ACL at the start of the Villanova match on Sept. 17. Prior to her injury, she had recorded 36 kills in her fi rst 20 games as a Bruin over seven matches. Meghan is making good progress coming off of her knee surgery, said Banachowski. Her arm swing looks good, and she will be in the mix in the middle just as she was before her injury last season. Carstensen returns for her sophomore season after playing in 20 games as a freshman last year. She averaged 0.50 blocks and 1.30 kills per game during her time on the fl oor. Elise had a good spring, said Banachowski. She made good progress on her attacking skills and will be a big help for us in our offense. Dominguez played in just one game last season and did not record any statistics. Stacy made good progress in the last two weeks of spring practice, said Banachowski. Rachell Johnson could also wind up in the mix for one of the middle blocker spots, a position that she has played both at UCLA and prior to the start of her collegiate career. DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO It will be an interesting battle for the libero position, said Banachowski. We may end up having different liberos for different matches and different games. This wide-open fi eld includes the incumbent at the position, sophomore Jordan Smith, who earned Honorable Mention Pac-10 All-Freshman notice last season while averaging 3.86 Nana Meriwether was an AVCA All-American as a junior in OUTLOOK digs per game. Smith opened camp as an outside hitter last fall, but quickly switched to the back-row position. Jordan came in last year and took over the position, said Banachowski. She wasn t at 100% physically during spring practice, and a lot of other players have made good progress. The long list of other candidates for the libero position include Blair Socci, Jade Machado, Jessica Fine, Laura Kroneberger, Colby Lyman and Ashley Ferrell. Socci primarily saw action as a serving specialist last season, fi nishing third on the team with 27 aces over just 79 games on the court for a 0.34 average. Blair has gotten better defensively, specifi cally with her passing, said Banachowski. After a fall season away from the team, Fine returned for spring practice and showed that she can contend for the libero position. As a freshman in 2004, she averaged 1.63 digs per game, playing as a defensive specialist while All-American Chrissie Zartman held down the libero position. Jessica ended up being among our best passers at the end of spring practice. Kroneberger returns for her senior season after averaging 1.73 digs per game last season as a defensive specialist. Nobody in the defensive specialist group had a better spring than Laura, said Banachowski. She is playing with more confi dence than ever before and has added a jump serve to her repertoire. Another player who saw court time as a defensive specialist last year as a freshman, Machado recorded 1.11 digs per-game over 36 games of action. Jade passed as well as anyone on the team during spring practice and distinguished herself as one of our best diggers. Ferrell was the starting libero for TCA, the club team that won the 18 and Under championship at the Junior Olympics tournament in Atlanta in early July, If Lyman s foot injury does not allow her to return to front-court action, look for her also to be in the race for playing time at the libero position. SCHEDULE The Bruins will be road warriors for the fi rst five weeks of the season, making two trips to the Eastern Time Zone with a fl ight to Hawaii in between. UCLA will rack up over 30,000 air miles between the start of the 2006 season and the Bruins fi rst home match on September 28 against defending NCAA Champion Washington. Along the way, UCLA will play in tournaments in Cincinnati, Honolulu, Denver and College Park, Md., before opening Pac-10 play at Oregon and Oregon State. It s a pretty tough schedule, said Banachowski. We are certainly going to be a road tested team by the end of the season UCLA WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL 5

8 THE COACHING STAFF ANDY BANACHOWSKI HEAD COACH 40TH YEAR UCLA ( 68) 1, (.791) QUICK FACTS Has a 1, career record Five-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year 1997 Volleyball Hall of Fame Inductee 1989 AVCA National Coach of the Year First and only Division I women s collegiate coach with 1,000 career wins 12 Career National Championships as a coach, player and men s assistant, combined UCLA WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL UCLA women s volleyball and head coach Andy Banachowski are synonymous. The UCLA women s volleyball program has been a dominant force since its inception in 1965, and Banachowski has directed the program for all but two of those seasons (the and seasons which directly followed his graduation). Beginning his 40th season at the helm of the Bruin program, Banachowski enters the 2006 season with a large roster of experienced players working towards the goal of bringing a seventh National Championship to their head coach s already impressive list of accomplishments. The Bruins and Banachowski won a DGWS National Championship in 1972, and backto-back AIAW titles in 74 and 75. In 1981, the NCAA brought women s sports under its umbrella, and since that time, the Bruins have appeared in 10 Final Fours, including championships in 1984, 90 and 91 and runner-up fi nishes in 1981, 83, 92 and 94. Banachowski s teams also experienced success and championships during his playing career. A two-time All-American for legendary Bruin men s coach Al Scates, Banachowski s playing career included USVBA National Championships in 1965 and 67. After graduation, he also served as Scates chief assistant from , a period in which the Bruins won four NCAA men s titles (1972, 74-76). Originally from San Mateo, Banachowski now resides in Los Angeles. He has two grown children, Bret, who played volleyball at UC Santa Cruz, and Amy, who was a three-year letterwinner from on the Bruin women s volleyball team. Banachowski s numerous coaching honors include: More victories than any other collegiate volleyball coach in history, with the exception of Bruin men s coach Al Scates. Banachowski enters the 2006 season with a 1, record (.791 winning percentage). On Nov. 12, 2005, Banachowski became the fi rst Division I women s coach to reach 1,000 career victories when his Bruins handed eventual national champion Washington its only loss of the season in a five-game thriller at Pauley Pavilion. In May 2000, Banachowski was presented with USA Volleyball s highest honor, the All- Time Great Coach Award, and was simultaneously honored with the George L. Fisher Leader in Volleyball award, recognizing his off-court endeavors on behalf of volleyball. The list of awards on Banachowski s resume includes one AVCA National Coach of the Year honor (1989), four AVCA Regional honors (1989, 92, 93 and 98), fi ve Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors (1988, 89, 93, 94 and 98) and four Volleyball Monthly/Volleyball Magazine national honors. Banachowski has been involved in 12 volleyball National Championships at UCLA. That total includes six women s titles as a coach; four men s titles, also as a coach; and two titles as a player for UCLA s men s team. Three years, 1972, 74 and 75, were double title years for Banachowski, as the Bruin men s and women s teams both won titles. On Oct. 24, 1997, Banachowski became the fi rst women s volleyball coach in history to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame as a coach. He has since become the fi rst volleyball inductee into the Serra High School and San Mateo County Halls of Fame. Since the NCAA brought women s sports under its umbrella in the season, UCLA s women s volleyball program has had 20 athletes earn 34 AVCA All-America honors, to go with 25 players who have earned Volleyball Monthly/Magazine All- America honors. 12 Bruins have been named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team at the Final Four. Success beyond the collegiate game is also prevalent among Banachowskicoached athletes. More than 20 former Bruins have trained with the U.S. National Team following their collegiate careers. The group includes fi ve indoor and two beach Olympians. The beach team of former Bruins Annett (Buckner) Davis and Jenny (Johnson) Jordan, as well as former Bruin Holly McPeak comprised three of the four members of the U.S. beach volleyball team for the Sydney Olympics. Additionally, 2000 senior Elisabeth Bachman was a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team for the Athens games. On the beach in 2004, a team of former Bruins (McPeak and Elaine Youngs) won a Bronze Medal with Bruin great Liz Masakayan as their coach. Numerous Bruins are involved in the AVP (beach volleyball) tour, including Davis/Jordan, McPeak/Youngs, and recent graduates Ashley Bowles and Lauren Fendrick. From , former UCLA players

9 THE COACHING STAFF competed in 83 straight professional tournament fi nals, winning 70 of those events. Bruin former players have won more FIVB International events than players from any other college. Banachowski s involvement with the U.S. Olympic team does not end with former Bruins in Olympic competition. Banachowski is a former advisor with the U.S. National Team, including the 1990 Goodwill Games, the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, the 1995 Pan-Am Games in Argentina and the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. 10 THE COACHING STAFF KIM JAGD ASSISTANT COACH 14TH YEAR UCLA ( 87) CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Head coach of USA Volleyball s High Performance National Team Head coach of USA Volleyball s A2 High Performance Camp in 2003 Recruiting coordinator Played three seasons for Coach Banachowski Played three years on the WPVA tour Continues to play six-player indoor Five-time All-American at USA Volleyball s Open Championships With a solid background in teaching and a passion to keep the Bruins on the cutting edge, Kim Jagd enters her 14th year as an assistant coach in Westwood after playing for UCLA in the mid-1980s. The Bruins recruiting coordinator, Jagd is a key ingredient in UCLA landing Volleyball magazine s top recruiting class of 1995 and 96 and the second-ranked class in 97. Most recently, Jagd has been recognized for her involvement with USA Volleyball, as she was selected to direct the 2003 USA Volleyball girls High Performance A2 Camp in Colorado Springs. The camp is USA Volleyball s introductory level of instruction to young players aspiring to achieve Olympic status. In addition to her duties as the head coach of the High Performance A2 program, Jagd was chosen to be the Head Coach of the High Performance National Team in 2004 and 05. The National Team competed in USA Volleyball s Regional Championships in Austin, Texas, in the summer of 2005 and won a gold medal in the YNT 17-and-under division. A CAP II Certifi ed coach, Jagd spoke at USA Volleyball coaches clinics and camps in January and July of Jagd has coached four Olympians during her career, including 2000 beach volleyball Olympians Jenny (Johnson) Jordan and Annett (Buckner) Davis along with 2004 Olympians Wiz Bachman (indoor) and Elaine Youngs (beach). All four were coached by Jagd during their UCLA careers, while Youngs was also coached by Jagd during her high school career at El Toro High School. JAGD S FIGHT WITH BREAST CANCER Diagnosed last March with stage 1 breast cancer, UCLA assistant coach Kim Jagd will continue her battle with the disease throughout the 2006 season. Jagd will continue with chemotherapy through September followed by radiation treatments until November. Hope. Faith. Courage. Strength. Mother, daughter, sister, and coach have been my primary roles. I have now earned a new role, that of survivor! I am in awe of the fact that no matter what cancer takes from me: my hair, days of good health, solid sleep, and my trust in life, cancer can never take away the gratitude and love that I feel toward my family, friends, and the UCLA team, staff and doctors for their care, love and support. Rather than fear cancer, educate yourself, get regular exams, and support the survivors and the worldwide fi ght to eliminate cancer. Kim Jagd Early detection is the key to curing all types of cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that women have annual mammograms beginning at age 40, in addition to clinical breast exams on an annual basis beginning in their 20s. In Westwood, Jagd s big picture focus with UCLA team members revolves around the process of creating balanced young adults, as well as competitive, fundamentally sound, winning volleyball players. The Arcadia, CA, native knows firsthand the importance of balance in life. Formerly Kim Poppa, she has two children, Nikki, 19, and Ryal, 17. Nikki joins the Bruins volleyball team this season after playing her freshman year at Pacifi c, while Ryal plays both football and volleyball at Palos Verdes High School. Last spring, he earned All-CIF, All-Area and Youth National Team honors in volleyball. A resident of Palos Verdes, Jagd balances the demands of mother, coach and active individual on a daily basis in addition to her coaching duties. Jagd is a fitness enthusiast who fi nds the time to enjoy as many activities as possible especially golf, yoga, weight lifting, basketball and racquet sports. A member of the Women s Professional Beach Volleyball Tour for three years ( ), Jagd recorded several Top 10 finishes in the sand. Since returning to six-player indoor play, she has earned USVBA All-American honors fi ve times (1995, 96, 98, 2001 and 03) and helped lead her team to the division title in 1996, 98 and As a collegiate athlete, Jagd competed for the Bruin volleyball team in 1985 and 86 after lettering two years at UC Irvine. She graduated from UCLA in 1987 with a degree in history then received elementary and secondary level teaching credentials from UCI in The Bruins have posted a (.719) record over her previous 13 seasons. UCLA has participated in the NCAA Tournament in 12 of Jagd s 13 seasons on staff, including the NCAA Championship Final match in Preceding her return to UCLA, Jagd spent one year as an assistant volleyball coach at Colorado, working with recruiting and coaching the passers and swing hitters. In 1992, Colorado won the Big Eight Tournament, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and fi nished with a 22-8 record. Before joining the college ranks, she served as co-head coach at El Toro High from During her tenure, Jagd helped lead the school to the 1991 Division I state championship and coached eventual Bruins Elaine Youngs and Michelle Mauney UCLA WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL
