ROCKIN ROOKIES: UAA s freshman duo of libero Kyla Militante-Amper and OH Leah Swiss both picked up some early-season hardware last week as Militante-Amper was named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week and Swiss made the GNAC/ Pac West Crossover All-Tournament Team... Militante-Amper led the Seawolves with 65 digs in the Crossover, including a season-high 23 against Militante-Amper Point Loma... since being called into action as an injury substitute against Rockhurst, the Hillsboro, Ore. (Century HS) product has registered at least 15 kills in six of seven matches... coming off a redshirt season, Swiss is quickly establishing herself as a GNAC Freshman of the Year candidate and one of the league s top all-around players regardless of experience... the 2-time Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year at Anchorage s Dimond High School, Swiss led the entire 8-team Crossover with a.419 attack percentage, while posting 2.80 kills and 2.40 digs per set... the 6-footer ranks among the GNAC s top 20 in attack pct., kills per set, digs per set and aces per set, and she is 10th with 3.16 points per set. GREEN MACHINE: After leading UAA to its unprecedented 7th straight winning season, UAA head coach Chris Green (140-66,.667) continues to establish himself as the most successful coach in program history and one of the top mentors in the NCAA Div. II ranks... a 2-time GNAC Coach of the Year (2009, 2013), Green has now led UAA to NCAA Tournament berths in fi ve of the last six seasons, Green capturing the program s highest-ever seed last year at No. 2; (in the 28 years before Green s arrival, the Seawolves made two NCAAs)... SPRINGHILL REPEAT: UAA opened the season by winning the title of its own SpringHill Suites Invitational for the second year in a row, defeating a pair of West Region opponents and a pair of nationally ranked foes in the process... the Seawolves openend Sept. 3 by beating Azusa Pacifi c 3-1 despite losing the fi rst set... Sr. OH Katelynn Zanders had 17 kills and Sr. MB Caitlin Hanson matched her career-high with 10 kills to pace the offense, while Jr. S Morgan Hooe had 36 assists, 5 kills (.455) and matched her career-high 5 blocks... UAA pulled out a thriller with a th-set victory against No. 23 Rockhurst on Friday afternoon, getting 21 kills and 18 digs from Zanders, plus a careerhigh 19 kills (.362) from Sr. RS Julia Mackey... Hooe fi nished with a career-high of 55 assists and again delivered 5 blocks, along with 13 digs and 4 kills (.444), and redshirt Fr. OH Leah Swiss enjoyed a coming-out party with 7 kills, 17 digs and 7 total blocks (3 solo)... in the nightcap Friday, UAA dominated the fi rst two sets and used a 5-0 run to close out No. 5 Nebraska Kearney, in the third... Mackey, Hanson, Swiss and Hooe combined for 26 kills and only 3 attack errors as the Seawolves earned their fi rst win over a top-5 ranked club since Jr. MB Erin Braun had 9 total blocks in the sweep, and Fr. L Kyla Militante-Amper notched 16 digs in her starting debut... in the fi nale against Cal Poly Pomona, Mackey led the way with 12 kills and no attack errors for a tourney-best.600 hitting percentage, and Zanders picked up her second double-double of the the year with 11 kills and 12 digs... Militante-Amper had another 16 digs, and Hanson helped dominate the net with 5 blocks.
