Koehl Classic St. John Arena will play host to six matches over the weekend The 9th Annual Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic gets underway Friday morning (Sept. 5) with a neutral site match between Florida Gulf Coast and Southern Illinois at 10 a.m., the start of a six-match event. Ohio State is slated to face Auburn and FGCU on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. KOEHL, AN OHIO STATE ATHLETICS LEGEND D.C. Koehl spent 39 years working with the Department of Athletics before passing away in January He joined the sports information staff in July 1973 after four years serving as a basketball manager under Hall of Fame head coach Fred Taylor. Following his graduation from OSU, he went on to bleed Scarlet and Gray for nearly four more decades, including a 30-year run as the sports info contact for Buckeye Women s Volleyball. SANDBOTHE NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM OUT IN OREGON Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe was voted to the all-tournament team, a seven-player squad, at the Oregon Invitational. She paced Ohio State in kills (35), blocks (20) and services aces (5) for the weekend. Sandbothe was integral in the Buckeyes triumph Saturday evening, swinging.333 ( ) and throwing up nine blocks (1s, 8a) to go along with three aces, good for a match-high 18 points. 2 WOMEN S VOLLEYBALL CONTACT KYLEKUHLMAN Office Phone: kuhlman.137@osu.edu CHALLENGING DOCKET AHEAD FOR THE BUCKEYES Ohio State s 32-match regular season schedule includes 17 matches against schools which qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament and a dozen versus teams ranked in the preseason AVCA Top-25. In addition, two more opponents in Oregon and Michigan are receiving votes in the AVCA poll. St. John Arena will serve as the venue for 13 home matches, starting with the 9th Annual Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic Sept NEW FACES FROM DIFFERENT PLACES A pair of transfers bolster the Ohio State roster this season as Elizabeth Campbell and Tyler Richardson both begin their junior campaigns as Buckeyes. Campbell is a six-rotation player who earned Co-ACC Player of the Week honors last season while playing for Duke University. She was tabbed to the ACC All- Freshman squad in Richardson comes from Middle Tennessee State University where she seized 2013 AVCA All-American honorable mention after performing as one of the most efficient offensive weapons in the country. She attacked at a.414 clip, ranking 13th nationally. B1G TIME COVERAGE FROM THE BIG TEN NETWORK Ohio State women s volleyball will be showcased at least 15 times by BTN during the 2014 season with a pair of matches airing live on the Big Ten Network linear channel and an additional 13 contests streamed live online by BTN Plus. The Big Ten Network rolls into town on Oct. 11 for a home match inside St. John Arena versus Northwestern. Ohio State takes the national stage on Oct. 28 as well when a road match at Penn State is broadcast nationally on BTN. Eight of the Buckeyes 10 home conference matches will be streamed live on BTN Plus while the additional two contests can be seen on Buckeye Vision. The three-match Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic can be seen on Buckeye Vision as well. COACH CARLSTON JOINS IN ALS AWARENESS EFFORTS Ohio State women s volleyball coach Geoff Carlston was called upon to participate in the ALS #IceBucketChallenge from the Buckeye women s soccer staff, and he gladly accepted. 22 HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON The 2014 season marks Geoff Carlston s seventh as Ohio State s head coach. He took the reins of the women s volleyball team on Feb. 5, 2008 and is the fifth head coach of the Buckeyes in the 43-year history of the program. Carlston enters 14 with a career winning percentage of.684 in 14 years as a Division-I head coach, racking up 316 victories compared to just 146 defeats. His squads have averaged over 22.5 wins per season and own 10 years of 20 or more victories. The native Minnesotan has made his mark in the state of Ohio, guiding the Bobcats of Ohio University and the Buckeyes to a combined nine NCAA Tournament appearances. Carlton directed Ohio State to four consecutive postseason berths highlighted by back-to-back Sweet 16 advancements in Before arriving in Columbus, Carlston started his NCAA Tournament success with five straight Mid-American Conference championships to propel Ohio into the big dance, including his first Sweet 16 showing in Carlston s squads are a combined 6-3 all-time in the NCAA First Round and 4-0 at Ohio State. He led the Bobcats to a conference crown in each of his five campaigns in Athens. Carlston s pupils have often been recognized amongst the nation s elite, totaling nine All-American accolades. Ohio State s Katie Dull (2009) and Emily Danks (2011) earned All-America honorable mention from the AVCA while Mari Hole was chosen in back-to-back seasons as an 11 honorable mention and Third Team member in Five Bobcats picked up All-American status under the tutelage of Carlston. On the conference level, Carlston has molded 10 All-Big Ten, 25 All-MAC and eight All-NSIC performers since Academic success has followed Carlston throughout his career as well. Student-athletes receiving academic all-conference laurels has been a common occurrence under Carlston, racking up a total of 70 such awards: 35 Academic All-Big Ten, 25 Academic All-MAC, 10 Academic All-NSIC). His program was honored by the NCAA in May 2014 with the Public Recognition Award, given to teams scoring in the top-10 percent nationally in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). The 2013 Buckeyes swept through a 12-0 nonconference and finished the season with 18 wins overall. Senior Kaitlyn Leary was tabbed an AVCA All-America honorable mention while Taylor Sandbothe was placed on the Big Ten s All-Freshman squad. Ohio State went on a four-year run of 20-or-more wins starting in In 2012, the Buckeyes registered a overall ledger, including a 13-7 conference mark to earn place fourth in the daunted Big Ten Conference. Carlston and the Buckeyes notched the program s first ever win at Nebraska (3-1, Oct. 26) that season. Senior Mari Hole was named AVCA Third Team All-American and unanimously voted All-Big Ten while fellow senior Emily Danks and junior Kaitlyn Leary were All-B1G honorable mentions. Carlston conducted a pair of treks to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and Juniors Mari Hole and Emily Danks picked up All-America nods during a campaign in 2011 after the 10 Buckeyes notched a overall win-loss tally en route to the first Sweet 16 jaunt. In just his second season at Ohio State, Carlston pushed the Buckeyes to a season record and 12-8 Big Ten tally in OSU returned to the NCAA Tournament via an at-large bid and hosted the first and second rounds in Columbus. During the summer of 2011, Carlston served as head coach of one of the USA A-2 squads that played at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships Women s Open, finishing second. Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach at Ohio University, building a powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference. His squads reached the NCAA Tournament every season and won five straight conference crowns with an overall record of during Carlston s time in Athens. The Bobcats won 78 of 80 MAC matches and went 14-1 in the conference tournament with four tourney titles. Four Bobcats were named MAC Player of the Year and a pair were tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Prior to Ohio, Carlston posted a record in three seasons at the helm of the Concordia University-St. Paul (Minn.) program. He took the Golden Bears from an 0-18 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference the season before his arrival to a serious run at the league title in CUSP finished the 2002 campaign with a 24-9 record - its best in Division II competition - and earned its first national ranking during the season. Carlson recruited three consecutive NSIC Freshman of the Year selections to play for the Golden Bears. In the summer of 2002, Carlston served as coach of a Division II all-star team that played in a tournament in Holland. Competing against the top Dutch college and professional league teams, the group won gold and bronze medals. Before Concordia, Carlston served two seasons as a student assistant coach at Minnesota while completing a master s degree in social work. Carlston began his coaching career in 1994 as head coach at Hopkins High School. In his two-year tenure, his teams went and captured the Classic Lake Conference title both seasons. He left the high school ranks for two years of service in Belize as a Peace Corps volunteer but stayed close to the sport, serving as head coach of the Belize women s national team and as an assistant for the men s national team. He helped develop a year-round training program and the team finished fourth at the 1997 Central America championship, earning the country s first international victories. Upon his return to the United States, Carlston became head coach of the 17 s team of the Minnesota One Junior Olympics club, which competed in the 17 Open Division at USA Nationals three consecutive years under his direction. In June 1993, Carlston earned his undergraduate degree in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, where he played on the club team for the Gophers. The Plymouth, Minn., native is married to the former Sara Tibesar of St. Paul. The couple has a son, Teddy. 24 ASSISTANT COACHES LAURA BENZING JAY VAN VARK Second Season, Bradley 2002 First Season, Iowa State 1985 Laura Benzing joined the Ohio State coaching staff in March 2013 as an assistant coach and is set to begin her second season donning the Scarlet and Gray in She spent the previous five years as an assistant coach for Oregon State. The Buckeyes swept through a 12-0 nonconference slate during Benzing s first campaign in Columbus and finished with 18 victories overall. She made an immediate impact on the court, mentoring freshman middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe to a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Sandbothe s 1.02 blocks per set career average ranks fifth overall in school history entering the 2014 season. Benzing was a middle blocker as well, earning a pair of First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades during her days as a Bradley University Brave ( ). At Oregon State, one of Benzing s primary responsibilities was to coordinate the program s recruiting. In this role, she helped produce a nationally-recognized 2009 recruiting class and brought in the program s first Fab 50 recruit. Benzing also served as the liaison between the student-athletes and academics and has helped the team earn three-straight AVCA Team Academic Award honors. Her recruiting prowess continues as a Buckeye, evidenced by Ohio State hauling in a Top-25 class in 2014 according to Volleyball Magazine s national rankings. On the court, Benzing focuses on both team and individual blocking. Both the 2010 and 2011 Beaver teams finished second in the Pac-10 in blocks per set. She also worked on defense and trained middle hitters. Prior to Oregon State, Benzing played professionally in the German Bundesliga for four years before retiring and accepting a position with the Beavers in Benzing graduated magna cum laude from Bradley in 2002 with a Bachelor s of Science in pre-law. A native of Sparta, Wis., Benzing also completed a six-month stint with Club West Volleyball in Temecula, Calif., directing coaches and coaching U14 and U16 groups. She is fluent in German and also earned a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults from the University of Cambridge while overseas. She obtained her USA Weightlifting Level I Sports Performance Certification in January 2011 as well. Ohio State head women s volleyball coach Geoff Carlston reeled in Jay Van Vark from across the country, adding the former Cal State-San Marcos associate head coach to the Buckeye staff as an assistant coach. Van Vark carries a wealth of collegiate, club and USA Volleyball coaching experience with him entering his first season in Columbus. Van Vark had a busy summer working with Team USA, coaching various teams and programs including rising junior Katie Mitchell and the USA Collegiate National Team in Minneapolis. The CSUSM Cougars went while the SDSU Aztecs won the Mountain West Conference championship for the first time in school history. Van Vark tutored two AVCA All-Americans and four All-MWC honorees while pushing San Diego State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since He began his coaching career as head coach for the Iowa State men s club team and assistant coach for the women s team. In his playing days, Van Vark was a Cyclone as well, named the club national MVP in During his last years in college, he played semi-pro indoor with the ACCO Sportswear team for two seasons, followed by three campaigns of outdoor for East Beach as an AAA-rated beach and grass player. He has also played in five indoor USVBA Open National Championships. In the late 80s, he was a college referee and at one point was the youngest head official for the Big 8 (now the Big 12). After moving to San Diego, he headed the Rancho Bernardo High School boys and girls volleyball programs for 10 seasons. He led the Bronco girls to their only CIF volleyball title in Van Vark took a leave from competitive volleyball to establish a career in the software business and raise a family. He returned to the sideline as his daughter took up the sport, coaching the Epic Volleyball Club from and resuming his role as head coach at RBHS from In addition to coaching, Van Vark is the co-founder of a successful software firm called Kick Your Apps which develops ipad and iphone applications. He is also the author of one of the most successful volleyball statistics packages, ivolleystats. He and his wife, Linda, have been married for 23 years and have a daughter, Audrey (20) and a son, Jared (17). 24

25 JENNIFER NOVAK TEAM TRAINER SUPPORT STAFF KYLE HOMEYER DIRECTOR OF VOLLEYBALL OPERNATIONS Jenn Novak, who returned to Ohio State in 2009, is responsible for the coverage of the women s volleyball and rowing teams. Novak received a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Kent State in 2005 and a Master of Science in allied health management from Ohio State in Prior to returning to Columbus, she spent two years as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Minnesota where she was responsible for the coverage of the men s gymnastics and men s and women s swimming and diving teams. In addition to her training responsibilities, Novak also teaches courses in athletic training and therapeutic modalities. In 2010, she was named the Clinical Instructor of the Year. Novak has attended numerous state and national conventions and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, The Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association and Ohio Athletic Trainers Association. She currently resides in Hilliard, Ohio. Kyle Homeyer joined Ohio State in the spring of 2013 and is in his second season as the Director of Volleyball Operations. Homeyer came to Columbus following a twoyear stint as a volunteer assistant at St. Louis University. He assisted in on-court skill instruction and with gameday management, while also helping with Data Project software and opponent scouting for the Billikens. Homeyer also worked with the St. Louis High Performance club as an administrative liaison for both the boys and girls divisions. He coached four teams while with St. Louis High Performance as well. In addition to his time in St. Louis, Homeyer worked with USA Volleyball in the execution of its annual Boy s Junior National Championship tournament. Homeyer is a 2011 graduate from Quincy University where he earned his Bachelor s of Science in biological sciences. A two-sport athlete for the Hawks, Homeyer earned all-conference honors as a punter for the football squad and played four seasons with the men s volleyball team, earning three Academic All-MIVA honors. Homeyer is currently working on his master s degree in higher education. ANTHONY GLASS DIRECTOR OF STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Anthony Glass is marking his 14th season as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic at The Ohio State University following four years as the director at Georgia where he developed and oversaw all related programs for 20 Olympic sports teams. Prior to his tenure at Georgia, Glass spent one year in a similar position at Boston College. Prior to that, he enjoyed four years as an instructor in the Department of Physical Education and assistant strength and conditioning coach at Northern Illinois, where he also earned a M.Ed. degree. (MS.ED) Glass oversees a staff that manages the strength and conditioning progress of Ohio State s entire varsity sports program, with the exception of football and basketball. Glass is certified by the National Strength & Conditioning Association, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, The American College of Sports Medicine and the United States of American Weightlifting Association. A native of North Carolina, he graduated from Appalachian State in 1990 with a degree in physical education. While at Northern Illinois, he authored the book entitled Weight Training: A Step by Step Guide to the Development of a Safe and Sound Program in addition to a number of articles for major sports science journals. Glass is nationally recognized speaker and serves as a state director for both the NSCA and NASE. Since 1984, Glass has competed successfully in power-lifting, winning several North Carolina and Illinois state championships. He has trained athletes of all levels from high school to the professional ranks. He and his wife, Guerdie, have one son, Lee Anthony, Jr., and daughters Leila and Leena. CHELSEA NOBLE VOLUNTEER COACH Chelsea Noble enters her first season on the coaching staff in 2014, and fourth year overall as a Buckeye after finishing her playing career in Columbus ( ). In addition to her role as the Ohio State volunteer assistant coach, she also serves as the Development Coordinator for the Elite Volleyball Training Center. As a student-athlete, Noble guided Ohio State as the team captain and libero during the 2008 and 2009 campaigns. The Vandalia, Ohio native set a then-school record with 486 digs as a senior. While that season dig total now ranks third all-time, Noble s 3.45 digs per set career average remains the top mark in Buckeye history. She began her career at Tennessee ( ), spending time as both a setter and defensive specialist during the Lady Vols run to the NCAA Semifinals. For her collegiate career, Noble racked up 1,606 assists, 1,385 digs, 147 kills, 86 blocks and 79 service aces. Noble excelled in the classroom as well, evidenced by her selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team twice and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete thrice. After graduating in 2010 with a degree in K-12 Physical Education, she moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Noble worked as the Coe College (D-III) graduate assistant while completing her master s degree in teaching and a health endorsement. As the women s volleyball GA, she aided Coe College in an undefeated conference record and 30-4 overall mark in Noble was the program s defensive coordinator and assisted with film breakdown, practice and team management. The past three years saw Noble teaching middle school health in Pella, Iowa while coaching club volleyball for Pella Thunder 13U and 15U. 25
