BEACH VOLLEYBALL RULEBOOK YMCA Leisure CIty Miller Street, Epping 3072 Ph leisurecity.ymca.org.au

RULES OF THE GAME Indoor Beach Volleyball is played by two teams on a court divided by a net. The object of the game is to ground the ball in the opponent s court or to force opponents into an error. Each team is allowed three touches before returning the ball across the net. The ball must not be thrown, lifted or pushed but must be hit clearly. A point can be won on any ones serve. (Rally Point). The duration of the game is 40 minutes (mixed 4 s & mixed 6 s) Or 30 minutes for Beach Volleyball Pairs Teams play up to 25 Points (mixed 4 s & mixed 6 s) Or 15 Points for Beach Volleyball Pairs The team that wins the most amount of sets wins the match If sets are even, the match is a draw To win an un-finished set, you must have 13 points or more (Mixed 4 s & 6 s) Or 8 for Beach Volleyball Pairs, and must be leading by 1 point to win the set If both teams are on 24 points, one team must win by 2 points If both teams are on 25 points each, sudden death to 26 points to claim the set Only captains may approach and speak to the referee Yellow card = 1st warning for an offence Red card = 2nd warning, loss of serve and point given to opposition Red & Yellow cards (shown together in one hand) = Player will be sent off for the remainder of the set. Red & Yellow cards (one in each hand) = Player is sent off for the remainder of the entire match. 1.

5 BASIC SKILLS The game consists of 5 basic skills: SERVE The act of putting the ball into play, executed from the backline, over the net by an over and underarm action. Men are not allowed to handball the serve. Women are allowed to handball if they wish. RECIEVE First touch of the ball, usually executed with the forearms (dig) or bunt, the object being to pass the ball to a frontline player close to the net. In beach volleyball 2 s, the first contact must be a dig. SET The act of setting the ball up for an attacking hit by volleying the ball into the air, using the fingertips. The ball may spin in a slow forward motion or backward motion. Any ball that has a side spin will be deemed as a double hit. (This rule only applies to beach volleyball pairs.) SPIKE The most common attacking shot, the player jumping up to hit a set into the opponents court. 5 BLOCK A defensive action performed by jumping up with both hands above and over the net, attempting to prevent a Spike from entering the court. The standard sequence of the above is for a serve to be received by a backline player, who digs/bunts it to the centre frontline player, for a set to either of the frontline players. The receiver of the set then attempts to Spike the ball into the opponents court, avoiding a block and forcing an error or grounding the ball in the opponents court. In beach pairs the first player must dig the ball to his or her partner, for a set, the setter will then put up the ball using a dig or a set for the partner to attempt an attacking shot normally using the spike. Each team is allowed a maximum of three consecutive contacts with the ball on its side of the net, before directing the ball towards the opponent s court. The ball may be hit with any part of the body. The ball can contact any number of parts of the body, providing the contacts are simultaneous and that the ball is not held, but rebounds clearly when receiving a serve or attacking a ball. 2

5 BASIC SKILLS cont Contacted Ball : A player who contacts the ball or is contacted by the ball shall be considered as having played the ball except when blocking. Held Ball : When the ball comes to rest momentarily in the arms or hands of a player, it is considered as being held. The ball must be hit cleanly. Scooping, lifting, throwing, carrying or one handed sets shall be considerd as holding. Double Hit : A player contacting the ball more than once with any part of the body without any other player having touched it between contacts, will be considered as having committed a double hit. Setting Serve : When setting a serve the ball must be contacted cleanly by both hands. Any ball that spins backwards is considered as a double hit. SIMULTANEOUS HITS + BLOCKING Double Fault : When two players on opposing teams commit a fault simultaneously, the referee will direct a replay. An example of this is when two players on opposing teams touch the net at the same time. In a simultaneous contact of the ball by two opponents above the net, the player on the side opposite to the projected flight of the ball is considered to have touched it last. After which the team whose side the ball enters has the right to play the ball three times. If the ball is held simultaneously by two opposing players, this is a double fault and the referee will directs a reply. Simultaneous hits by team members : If two or more players of the same team attempt to play the ball and the ball is touched by only one of them, this shall be considered as one touch only. A player may play the ball whilst in contacts with a player of their team. However, no player may be used as means of support to reach the ball. When two players of the same team contacts the ball simultaneously this is considered as two hits, except when blocking. Blocking beach 4 s & 6 s : Blocking is an action of interrupting any flights of the ball, when it is coming from the opponent s court. Blocking can only be performed by a player(s) on the frontline. Any player participating in a block which contacts the ball shall have the right to make a second contact. Such a second contact however, shall count as the first of three hits allowed by a team. If the ball touches one or more players in a block, it will be counted as only one hit for the team, even if the contacts are not made simultaneously by the players participating in the block. The hands of the blocker(s) may reach over the net provided the opposing team have made their allotted three contacts with the ball. When the ball, having touched the top of the net and the opponents block, returns to the attacker s side, the players of this team have the right to another three hits. 3.

SIMULTANEOUS HITS + BLOCKING cont Blocking beach 2 s : In beach pairs the block counts as the first touch, however the blocker has the right to a second contact, this will then be deemed a second hit. When the ball touches the net in the course of play (other than when it is served) it is considered to be good play and continues. If the ball was contacted three times by a team and then touches the net without crossing to the opponent s side, the referee shall stop play but only after the ball is hit a fourth time or makes contact with the ground. Net driven into player : If the ball is driven into the net with such force as to cause the net to contact a member of the opposing team such contact shall not be considered as a fault on the part of the player. Simultaneous touch of the net : If two opponents touch the net simultaneously this shall constitute a double fault and the point will be replayed. Using the set as an attacking shot : In beach 4 s and 6 s, side setting over the net is permitted. In beach 2 s the ball must travel in a direction that is square with the shoulders. Tipping the ball over the net : In beach 4 s and 6 s, tipping is permitted. In beach 2 s no tipping is allowed. This will be deemed as a foul shot. HAND PASSING OVER THE NET During the block : Touching the ball with the hands over the net in the opponent s court shall not be considered a fault. After the spike : Passing the hands over the net, without touching it, after the spike is permitted. 4.

CROSSING THE CENTRE LINES Crossing the vertical plane : Crossing the vertical plane under the net is permitted. Crossing the vertical plane of the net with any part of the body with purpose or interference or distraction of the opponent while the ball is in play constitutes a fault. It is not a fault to enter the opponent s court after the referee has whistled to stop play. Antennas : The ball must pass inside both antennas and is not allowed to hit the antennas as well. Line ropes : If any part of the ball touches the line ropes it is classified as in. Roof : The ball may hit the roof on your side if it does not pass the vertical plane and stay on your side play is allowed to continue. The ball is not permitted to hit the roof on your side and carry over the net. Always return the ball to the opposition under the net. Do not kick the ball under the net as this is a safety issue. LATE ARRIVALS If a team does not have at least three (3) players present for beach 6 s or two (2) players for beach 4 s and the Game Fee is not paid in full, then the team will be penalised one (1) point for each minute that the team is not ready to commence play. Once a team does have enough players present then a late player may enter the court when the rally is over and a sub is called. If at least three (3) players or two (2) players are not present by the end of the first 15 minutes, then the game is deemed a forfeit. FOREFITS A team forfeiting a fixtured game runs the risk of being replaced in competition. Any team forfeiting a game automatically incurs a forfeit fee of $60 for beach 6 s, $48 for beach 4 s and $25 for beach pairs which is to be paid before that team s next game. A team forfeiting two (2) games in a row will be removed from the competition. GAME CHANGES Game changes are not allowed. If a team is unable to play a fixtured game, they will incure a forfeit fee of $60 for beach 6 s, $48 for beach 4 s, $25 for beach pairs which is to be paid before that team s next game. This ensures all teams complete their full complement of games for the season and to assist in player qualifications towards finals. Rules valid as at January
