1 World Volley F É D É R A T I O N I N T E R N A T I O N A L E DE VOLLEYBALL Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President A s another busy year of Volleyball draws to a close, the month of November was no exception. The FIVB World Grand Champions Cup and the Men s Club World Championship were two key events which gripped the Volleyball world while the curtain came down on another successful SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball season in Thailand. It made me very proud to see the return of the FIVB Men s Club World Championship after 17 years. The week-long event in Doha proved to be a great success and the hosts the Qatar Volleyball Federation must be praised for the organizational skills. Congratulations to Trentino for keeping the Men s Club World Championship title in Italian hands again but now, having had a taste of such an enthralling title race, I m sure I represent all Volleyball fans when I look forward with great anticipation to further editions and the women s equivalent in the coming years. Meanwhile, the World Grand Champions Cup was another great illustration of the high quality of Volleyball we have across our confederations. Both the women s and men s editions were terrific examples of what intercontinental Volleyball is all about and all teams must be congratulated for not only having qualified for this illustrious tournament, but for also having performed so much in the spirit of the game throughout. Of course, Beach Volleyball is also testament to all the great qualities of our beloved sport and the last two SWATCH FIVB World Tour events of the year in Sanya, China and Phuket, Thailand didn t disappoint as the universality of Volleyball was again, to the fore. The FIVB Development Fund proposal, which will now be put forward to the FIVB Board of Administration for approval when it sits in April, 2010, aims to provide increased and improved support to national federations through the FIVB Confederations. The goal of the project is to upgrade the levels of performance of national federations by motivating them to prepare programmes at the grass root level that can become eligible for funding, with development of youth teams for competitions in mind. The development and health of the players and federations is the FIVB s priority, FIVB President Mr Jizhong Wei said. pions at their first attempt after impressive victories over Brazil and the hosts over the final two days. 2 Volleyball This new proposal from the Development Commission reflects this perfectly and will guarantee that the FIVB and all its members grow stronger together. The Executive Committee meeting took place following a very successful FIVB World Grand Champions Cup and one day after the Drawing of Lots for the 2010 FIVB Women s Volleyball World Championships, both held in Japan. Mr. Wei opened the meeting by praising the Japanese Volleyball Association for hosting successfully the two FIVB events and also congratulated the EC member from Nigeria Mr Habu Ahmed Gumel for his recent election as an IOC member representing Africa. Mr Gumel joins Mrs Rita Subowo (INA) as the two FIVB members with IOC membership. President Wei went on to explain that the objective of the FIVB is to increase the assistance to national federations in category I and II in order to give them the possibility to organize their competitions and administration. Other key points included giving FIVB Beach Volleyball universality by changing the Olympic qualification system, introducing a finance system reform, strengthening budget control and finance procedure, and improving international relations with the IOC and other sports organizations. The FIVB Executive Committee in Tokyo FIVB 1st Executive Vice-President Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz gave members an update on the 2010 World Congress which will be held from September 9-10 in the Italian capital of Rome and also reported an outstanding increase in marketing and TV rights dating back to 2007 of more than 300%, while the FIVB competitions World League, World Grand Prix and Beach Volleyball World Tour all obtained a surplus. In accordance with the new FIVB objectives, these additional revenues will be redirected into Volleyball with the FIVB Development Fund recognized as being one obvious channel. Meanwhile, the FIVB 2nd Executive Vice-President Mr. Theofanis Tsiokris reported that the FIVB Club World Championships 2009 were extremely successful, pointing to the excellent organization of the host federation Qatar, the host broadcasters Al Jazeera and the passionate fans who attended, while another key proposal which will be put to the FIVB Board of Administration was - any player who participates in a non-fivb event will have his/her membership withdrawn. Seeded 11th in the second annual Sanya Open, world No 15 Kuhn and Zumkehr scored a 17-21, and win over the top-seeded and world No. 3 Kessy and Ross in the 60-minute finale before an overflowing crowd on the Sanya Bay centre court. The Swiss shared the $30,000 first-place prize. This is unbelievable, said the 29-year Kuhn, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the Sanya Open. No one expected us to win and we had no expectations to win since we were the underdogs. We played very well in a relaxed manner as all the pressure was on the American world champions. In becoming the first women s team from Switzerland to compete in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal match in the 18-year history of the international circuit, Kuhn was competing in her fifth SWATCH final four and her first since Zumkehr s previous best SWATCH placement was a seventh in 2008 in Marseille, France. Wu and Xu, who were competing in their sixth SWATCH FIVB World Tour, split $21,000 for second-place in their first international event together since their ninth-place finish at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. We are very pleased with our finish to the season, said the 36-year old Schuil, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the Sanya Open. Our goal was to play our best Beach Volleyball at the end of the season since I was getting married in June and did not really start practicing hard until after my honeymoon. Thankfully, we played our best match of the tournament today against a very good team. The final was the 10th-time the two teams have met on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour with Wu and Xu still holding a 6-4 edge in the contests.
