1 Official Bulletin N 82 december 2012E edition in english Volleyball across the generations YOUTH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS BUSY MONTH FOR CONTINENTAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS As the popularity of volleyball grows worldwide, so does the level of the game and the quality of players emerging from all corners of the world. At the various national, continental and international events over the past year, we were treated to top-notch volleyball action a sign that our collective efforts to develop the sport continue to bear fruit. We have also seen an increase in participation levels across the continents. It is not surprising that volleyball has such universal appeal as it crosses the gender and age divide. As more young men and women are being drawn to the courts, volleyball has shown that it can also grow with the people. In November, I was one of 1,276 athletes who took part in the Vôlei Masters in Brazil at the Volleyball Development Centre, in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro. The competition is for players from 5 to over 70 years of age and there were participants from Peru, Argentina and as far away as Finland. The Peruvian team, led by Natalia Malaga, celebrate after their historic win against Brazil at the 2012 South American Girls' Youth Championship. This is first time in 2 years that Peru have won the title. With their ticket to the 201 Girls Youth World Championship in Thailand guaranteed, Peru beat defending champions Brazil -2 (25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 2-25, 15-10) to take the 2012 South American Girls Youth Championship title in Lima, Peru on November 27. Argentina also earned a place at the World Championship after beating Chile for third place. At the Asian Boys Youth Volleyball Championship on November 1, Iran claimed their sixth title against rivals China -2 (21-25, 25-21, 2-25, 28-26, 15-8) in the final in Tehran, Iran. Both finalists advanced to the 201 Boys' Youth World Championship in Mexico. Japan and Korea also qualified for the World Championship after taking third and fourth place. This is the first time Asia has four places at the Boys Youth 201 BOYS' WORLD YOUTH CHAMPI- ONSHIP (MEXICO) - QUALIFYING PROCESS Berths Determined By Teams Qualified World Championship. After two editions finishing behind Argentina, Brazil won the South American Boys Youth Championship. In an exciting match between the continent s best two teams on November 11, Brazil fought to a -1 victory (25-1, 18-25, 25-2, 25-22). 2 2 volleyball MEN S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WIN NORCECA GROUP C 2014 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER The Dominican Republic, Haiti and Guadeloupe, the top three teams of the NORCECA Group C First Round tournament, advanced to next year's second round. The matches took place in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on November and 4. The home side defeated Haiti 25-14, 25-16, in the match for first place while Guadeloupe beat the U.S. Virgin Islands 25-2, 25-10, for third. The Men s World Championship is a quadrennial competition among 24 teams. As the host of the event, Poland automatically qualify for the 2014 edition. NORCECA was the first confederation to begin qualification events and the other four confederations will start next year. Mr Gaisoa played an active role in the development of volleyball in his region and had attended the most recent Congress in Anaheim, USA in September. A service was held for Mr Gaisoa on November 16. Delegations from Madrid 2020 and Istanbul 2020 met President Dr. Ary S. Graça F in Lausanne in November to present their proposals for volleyball and beach volleyball venues for the 2020 Olympic Games, including details of the venues and infrastructure that would be in place, should they win the bid. The Madrid 2020 delegation included former Spanish volleyball star Rafael Pascual (sports coordinator for Madrid 2020), Federation president Agustin Martin Santos and Beach Volleyball Commission member, Miguel Quintana from Spain. The Istanbul 2020 delegation comprised general manager Alp Berker, sports advisor Anita Palm and games planning advisor, Adrian Avis.

3 Swatch World Tour SWATCH WORLD TOUR SEASON AWARDS Two of the top women s teams in beach volleyball history, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United States, and Larissa França and Juliana Felisberta da Silva of Brazil, dominated the 2012 Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour year-end awards. beach volleyball Votes were cast by players, coaches, referees and officials on the popular international pro beach volleyball circuit. USA's Kerri Walsh was voted Most Outstanding Player of 2012, Sportsperson of the Year, Best Blocker and Best Hitter. Along with team-mate Misty May-Treanor, she also claimed the Most Inspirational Players of 2012 award. Brazil s Larissa and Juliana picked up the 2012 SWATCH World Tour Team of the Year award. Juliana was also voted Best Offensive Player, and Larissa Best Defensive Player and Best Setter. Also recognised for their accomplishments were USA s April Ross (Best Server), the Netherlands Sophie van Gestel (Most Improved Player) and Brazil s Barbara Seixas (Top Rookie). USA's three time Olympic gold medallists Misty May-Treanor (left) and Kerri Walsh (right) added several more awards to their name with the honours announced for the 2012 SWATCH World Tour USA s Phil Dalhausser was selected as the year s Best Blocker, Best Offensive Player and Best Setter of the men's World Tour. Compatriot Sean Rosenthal, who was picked as the 2012 Most Outstanding Player, was also on the 2012 Team of the Year with partner Jake Gibb. Brazil s Emanuel Rego was honoured as the year s Most Inspirational Player and Sportsman of the Year while partner Alison Cerutti was voted Best Hitter of the Season. The Best Server award went to Germany s Eric Koreng while Italy s Paolo Nicolai was voted the Most Improved Player of Latvia s Martins Plavins received 2012 Best Defensive Player and the Netherlands Christiaan Varenhorst was named the Top Rookie of BRAZIL TO HOST BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CUP FINAL Brazil will host the s inaugural Beach Volleyball World Cup Final in early 201. Ten participating countries will be split into two pools of five teams for round-robin pool play. The two best teams will advance to the semifinals and compete for $150,000 in prize money. The participants will include the winners of each of the Continental Cup Finals and the national federations who qualified a maximum of two teams at the 2012 Olympic Games through the Olympic rankings. If the 10 vacancies are not filled, the best country on the 2012 Olympic Games rankings, not already qualified, will participate. 4 4 REFORM OF BEACH VOLLEYBALL EVENTS The conducted a week-long series of meetings in Lausanne from November 5 to 9. These included the Continental Cup and World Cup workshop, the Beach Volleyball Commission, Beach Volleyball World Tour Council for Grand Slam events and World Championships, and the Beach Volleyball Council for Open Events. The main outcomes of the Beach Volleyball Commission that met in Lausanne on November 7 were as follows: Greater commitment to a sustainable model of international beach volleyball events and continued development of the Continental Cup and World Cup are needed. Grand Slam events must be positioned as the `s elite property with Open events as an intermediate property providing more opportunities for athletes participation worldwide. A tentative Beach Volleyball calendar for 201 will be split into 10 Grand Slam The Beach Volleyball World Tour Council for World Championships and Grand Slams was one of four beach volleyball meetings that took place in Lausanne in November events with up to 18 Open tournaments, staged across the five continents, over a period of 10 months. The schedule allows for a week every month free of any events for the development of beach volleyball events at the national and continental level. The following countries have expressed their interest in hosting a Grand Slam: Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, USA and Malaysia. A new competition, the Under-2 World Championships, will be added to the s beach volleyball international events calendar. BEACH VOLLEYBALL CONTINENTAL CUP AND WORLD CUP WORKSHOP At the Continental Cup and World Cup workshop on November 6, participants reviewed the success of the first edition of the Continental Cup. The competition ran from 2010 to 2012 and featured 14 countries in 71 tournaments with a total of 54 organisers. The Continental Cup qualified each of the continental champions to the Olympic Games, with the runners up playing for two more vacancies at the World Cup Olympic Qualification tournament in Moscow, Russia. Participants said the Continental Cup format was well perceived and easily understood but its consistency across the confederations needs to be improved. The next edition is expected to start in The men s AVC Continental Cup Final took place in Min River Park in Fuzhou, China on June 24 with Japan, Australia and China taking the top three spots IOC Sports Director attends World Tour Council for World Championships and Grand Slams IOC Sports Director Christophe Dubi attended the Beach Volleyball World Tour Council for World Championships and Grand Slams. Mr Dubi thanked the for their outstanding work at the Olympic Games, providing two "extremely successful" events in London. "The London Olympic Games were a great success and the contributed significantly to this, Mr Dubi told the members. He was presented with a key to the by President Dr. Ary S. 5 VOLLEY ALL FESTIVAL BRINGS TOGETHER OVER 700 YOUNGSTERS IN MADAGASCAR Students from 77 schools, 26 volleyball programmes and 14 clubs, representing seven different communities, gathered in Antsirabe, Madagascar for a Volley All festival on October 20. The 74 participants were first given instruction in basic techniques, before being divided into teams (girls, boys and mixed) for a tournament of 10-minute matches where the under-12s were refereed by 15 and 16 year old players. The event was designed to teach young players to officiate, to promote volleyball in schools and to encourage 11 and 12 year olds to take up volleyball through programmes and youth leagues. The organisers next challenge will be to find ways to encourage the participation of communities that cannot afford to send students to such events. Afghanistan holds zonal championship The 2012 North and North-East Zonal Volleyball Championship in Afghanistan was held from November 8 to 12, culminating in a final match between Aftaj Balkh and Perozi Balkh. Aftaj Balkh emerged as victors with a -1 win. Jozjan province took third place and Takhter finished fourth. A total of nine teams, from eight provinces, participated in the championship sponsored by Etisalat Telecommunications Company. Aftaj Balkh, Perozi Balkh and Jozjan volleyball teams have qualified to play in the Afghan Volleyball Premium League, where the top three teams from all five of the country s zones will compete. In the closing ceremony, the federation, via president Dr. Mohammad Yonus Imal Popalzay, distributed 200 volleyballs and 10 nets. These were provided by the development fund project to provincial representatives, to help in the organisation of Mini Volleyball festivals and Cool Volley festivals in primary schools for boys and girls. Participants were taught general coaching principles, teams and formations, ways to plan training programmes, methods for teaching basic techniques, observing players and using statistics. They were also given scenarios on attack, defence, counterattack, free-ball situations and defensive organisation. There were special sessions on women s volleyball and ways of adapting physical training to the current situation in Haiti. Participants were given the opportunity to observe both the men s and women s national teams in training. The president of the Haitian Federation, Margarette Graham, has steadily advanced a long-term volleyball development programme in spite of Haiti's challenging situation. 6 6 confederations CHINA'S ZHANG/XUE CLINCH ASIAN WOMEN'S GOLD ORGANISERS & DATES CONFIRMED FOR AFRICAN AGE GROUP COMPETITIONS Chinese duo Zhang/Xue recovered from a poor semifinal performance to take the gold in straight sets China s Xi Zhang and Chen Xue claimed their fourth AVC Beach Volleyball Championship title in Haikou, China, beating Henriette Iatika and Miller Elwin of Vanuatu in two sets 21-14, We were desperate to win here, said Zhang. As you know, we were not able to get any medal in the London Olympic Games. This Championship is the last tournament of the year and we won gold here every year and we save it till the very end. The Beijing Olympic bronze medallists finished second in the SWATCH World Tour rankings. The CAVB Sports Organising Commission at their meeting in Cairo, Egypt The organisers and dates of the African age group championships were decided at the CAVB Sports Organising Commission meeting in Cairo, Egypt on November 15. The top four teams at the Boys Youth African Nations Championship and the Men s Junior African Nations Championship will qualify for the 201 Boys Youth World Championship in Mexico and the 201 Men s Junior World Championship in Turkey. The Vanuatu team, who claimed gold in the 2012 Seoul Women s Challenger and finished ninth at the Bangsaen Thailand Open in November, trailed the whole first set and quickly gave away their slim lead in the second set. Nevertheless, they still made history as the first silver medallists for Vanuatu in the AVC Beach Volleyball Championship, underscoring the enormous development of the sport in recent years. Iatika and Elwin were presented with the Pacific s Outstanding Team of the Year award at the Pacific Games Council's annual General Assembly held on Wallis Island from October 18 to 19. CAVB president and executive vice-president and treasurer, Dr. Amr Elwani, underscored the importance of the meeting to approve the new ambitious plan for the African competitions. We want to involve all 5 affiliated national federations through our new format so we can reach each country in Africa, said Dr. Elwani. We also want to place special emphasis on the age category championships as they are the future of our beloved sport. The CAVB s new format of age group continental championships is based on the preliminary zonal qualifications. 7 7 VENUES OF NEXT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNOUNCED CHANGE OF PRESIDENT AT THE SOUTH AMERICAN CONFEDERATION confederations CEV president André Meyer (right) announced Bulgaria's and Italy's winning bid for the 2015 Men's European Championship President Dr. Ary S. Graça F congratulates new CSV president Rafael Lloreda Currea from Colombia Bulgaria and Italy will host the 2015 CEV Men s Championship following a decision of the CEV Board of Administration on November 17. The Championships will take place in three venues in Bulgaria (Varna, Plovdiv and Sofia) and two in Italy (Messina and Catania). The final stage of the competition will be held at the Arena Armeec in Bulgaria s capital city. Dr. Rafael Lloreda Currea of Colombia assumed the presidency of the South American Confederation (CSV) at a meeting held at the Events Centre Cittá América in Rio de Janeiro on November 15. The meeting was attended by the vice-presidents of the CSV Executive Committee, Judith Rodriguez, Roberto Escobar and Alejandro Bolgeri as well as secretary general Dr. Renata Araujo Lopes Blauth. The Netherlands and Belgium will host the 2015 CEV Women s Championship in the cities of Rotterdam (venue of the finals), Apeldoorn, Almere and Antwerp. These cities are experienced in hosting major events. Moreover they have the support of local authorities, which will be an important factor in creating a volleyball festival atmosphere. With Belgium having already hosted the preliminary rounds of the Championships in 2007, the Netherlands will host the European Championship for a second time since The President, Dr. Ary S. Graça F, also took the opportunity to ask the presidents of the national federations to submit projects aimed at developing volleyball in their countries, similar to what was done by president Lennox Shuffler of Guyana during the meeting. The presidents of the national federations of the CSV were also invited to attend the meeting as guests. Marco Tullio Gomes Teixeira was appointed first vice-president of the Executive Committee at the same meeting. The appointments will be ratified at the CSV Congress in March 201. Special campaigns to encourage the sport in schools and colleges will begin in A volleyball festival will also be organised around the European Championship. Finland and Estonia will host the 2014 CEV Women s Junior Championship with the finals played in Tartu, Estonia. The men s Championship will be co-hosted by the cities of Brno in the Czech Republic and Nitra in neighbouring Slovakia. The 2015 CEV Girls Youth Championship will be held in Varna and Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and the Boys Championship is set to take place in Ankara, Turkey, which has hosted many international events in the past. In a separate announcement, regular World Tour venue Klagenfurt, Austria was confirmed as host of the 201 Beach Volleyball European Championships. South American beach volleyball tour 2012/1 Brazil, Chile and Argentina climbed the podium at the first stop of the South American Beach Volleyball tour 2012/1, which took place in Santa Fe, Argentina from November 2 to 25. Brazilians Lili Simoes and Rebecca Silva won gold in the women s competition beating Chileans Francisca Rivas and Camilla Pazdirek. The Argentine team of Ana Gallay and Virginia Zonta won bronze. In the men s competition, Chile s Marco and Esteban Grimalt took gold by beating Brazilian team Alvaro Filho and Thiago Santos in a tiebreak. It was organised by the Physical Education Institute in collaboration with the Regional Development Centre in the Dominican Republic. With a total of 1,728 students divided into 144 teams (72 male and 72 female), the number of participants exceeded the expectations of the organisers. The NORCECA Confederation contributed to the teacher training activities and provided the playing equipment, which included balls, nets and antennas. We are very pleased to open this competition at the grassroots level with the participation of so many boys and girls, said Nelson Ramirez, director of the centre. Volleyball at schools is very important to attract the kids to our sport at a tender age and to expand its popularity in the country. As part of its global development plan, NORCECA has encouraged all its national federations to initiate volleyball programmes in schools to help the sport gain ground on the continent. The opening ceremony was attended by Danilo Mesa, executive director of the Dominican Republic Physical Education Institute, and municipal authorities of the East Santo Domingo province. This time a year ago Italy clinched the Volleyball Women s World Cup title for the second time in a row at the Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. With their win Italy secured a place in the 2012 Olympic Games. It was also announced that the Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour 2012 schedule would feature a total of 14 events in 15 countries over a sevenmonth period, including a record-breaking nine Grand Slam tournaments, up from six in FOUR HEROINES QUALIFY FOR cev CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAYOFFs heroines Jovana Brakocevic, Saori Kimura, Simona Gioli and Neslihan Darnel have made it through the fourth round of competition!
