6 Andrew Palileo Head Coach Third Year Crown College 91 profiles head coach The Palileo File Age: 48 Hometown: Honolulu, Hawaii Wife: Wendy Alma Mater: Crown College 91 Head coach Andrew Palileo (paw-leh-layoh) continues to develop what has been a young and exciting North Texas volleyball team. In his second year at the helm, Palileo guided the Mean Green to one of the best seasons in school history. Led by Conference USA Player of the Year Carnae Dillard, Palileo & Co. racked up a 21-9 record entering the postseason, the second-best regular season win total in North Texas history. With momentum on its side and riding a program-best 10-match win streak, North Texas would make it to the C-USA semifinal round before falling to eventual conference champion WKU. The team s individual talent was recognized as Dillard took all-conference first team honors, senior Hanna Forst was named to the second team, and Amanda Chamberlain was placed on the conference s all-freshman squad. In his first year at North Texas, Palileo guided the Mean Green through its initial year in C-USA and accumulated a record that came within a few points of the conference s semifinal round. Two players, sophomore Carnae Dillard and senior Karissa Flack, were named to the C-USA all-conference team while setter Amy Henard was named to the all-freshman squad. He arrived in Denton for his first season from Ohio State where he was an assistant coach for two years, bringing an an extensive resume of experience at the Big-10 and Pac-12 levels to the Mean Green. His most recent head coaching position was at Washington State from While in Pullman, Wash., Palileo took the Cougars to the NCAA tournament in 2009, their first trip in seven years. He also received the Pac-12 Coach of the Year award that same season. Before heading to Washington State, Palileo was a head coach for seven years at South Dakota State where he gathered 154 wins and 86 losses. He was named the 2007 Summit League Coach of the Year when the South Dakota State Jacks were the Summit League regular season and tournament champions and made the first trip in school history to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Palileo s crew broke or tied 23 team or individual records during Prior to South Dakota State, Palileo was the head volleyball coach at Bethel University (St. Paul, Minn.), where he had an record in four seasons, the best four-year mark in school history. While at Bethel, he produced eight first-team all-conference players, a firstteam All-American and two academic All-Americans. Palileo also coached the Club SoDa 18s volleyball team in Brookings, S.D., from , and was the Heartland Adidas Select Volleyball Program 18s head coach for five years in Minneapolis, Minn. He served as the director of the Crosstown Junior Olympics at Edina High (Minn.) from , and he was the JV coach at Waconia (Minn.) High from A highly-regarded clinician, Palileo has also been the head coach of the Midwest Volleyball Instructor Elite Camps since A graduate of Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.), Palileo received his bachelor of arts degree in missiology in 1991 and a bachelor of arts degree in social science/ secondary education in He went on to earn a master s degree in educational leadership from Bethel University (St. Paul, Minn.) in Palileo and his wife, Wendy, have three sons - Ashton, Austin and A.J. - while their daughter, Alyvia, is on this year s roster. 7 profiles assistant coaches Vinh Nguyen Assoc. Head Coach Rachel Todorovich Assistant Coach First Year Cal Poly Pomona 00 Vinh Nguyen enters his first season as an assistant coach on the North Texas staff. A Mission Viejo, Calif., native, Nguyen brings an extensive resume of longevity and success to Denton. He joins the coaching staff after a year of volunteering nationwide. In the fall of 2014, Nguyen did a stint of assistant coaching at Golden West College in Huntington Beach before volunteering for the Mean Green during the second half of the 2014 season and into the conference tournament. He was with the team for wins over Rice, TCU, UTSA and Southern Miss. Before 2014, Nguyen spent time at Cal State Fullerton, where he reinvigorated the Titans offensive attack. In his six seasons with the school, CSUF hitters earned a total of two Big West Player of the Year awards and three AVCA All-American honors. Nguyen s expertise translated to team success as well. In 2010, the Titans won the Big West Conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The Titans recorded a school-record.246 team hitting percentage on the year while leading the BWC in kills per set (14.45). For 12 seasons before his time at Fullerton, Nguyen was an assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona where he helped head coach Rosie Wegrich lift the Broncos to six seasons with at least 18 wins, including a program-best 24-3 mark in That same year, Pomona won the California Collegiate Athletic Association championship, its first since In the summer of 2009, Nguyen was named the administrator to the Southern California High Performance teams that participated at the USA Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He oversaw the four SCVA HP teams in Ft. Lauderdale and as a result, the SCVA Select Red team earned a gold medal at the HP Championships. In 2007, Nguyen was hired by the USA Men s National Team as a staff member to help them prepare for their run at World League, Pan-Am Cup, Americas Cup and Norceca Cup championships, which resulted in two gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Nguyen has also been involved with the USA High Performance Pipeline since 2003, and he continues to coach at developmental camps throughout the United States. Nguyen also coached at five Southern California high schools (Hoover, San Gabriel, Arcadia, Alhambra and La Habra) and worked with the San Gabriel, Magnum and Power Volleyball Clubs. In 1996, Nguyen co-founded the Top Gun Volleyball Club, one of Southern California s most respected youth volleyball programs that has trained more than 1500 athletes since its inception. Even after nearly two decades, he continues to coach youth teams throughout the club season. Nguyen played volleyball at Mt. San Antonio College and Long Beach City College before transferring into the Big West Conference with Long Beach State. He finished his schooling and graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2000 with a degree in kinesiology. First Year Washington St. 13 Rachel Todorovich enters her first season as an assistant coach with Mean Green volleyball. Todorovich, a former right-side hitter at Washington State, played under North Texas head coach Andrew Palileo while he led the Cougars in 2009 and In 2009, Todorovich s freshman season, WSU made it to the NCAA Tournament where she led the team with 15 kills, 10 digs and a.556 hitting percentage in a loss to the 20th-ranked team in the nation. That season she would earn a spot on the 2009 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team as an honorable mention selection. She was also chosen as a conference all-academic selection in 2011 and Known for her longevity, Todorovich ended her playing career with the fourthmost points (1,118.5) in WSU history since the stat started being tracked in 2001, and she ranks ninth in all-time sets played for the school (410). Once her collegiate career had come to a close, Todorovich continued her involvement with volleyball, ultimately moving to Chanthaburi, Thailand to teach English and P.E. with an emphasis in volleyball for grades 1-9. Todorovich followed that up by coaching a single season at Wenatchee Valley College in 2013 before becoming the youth sports coordinator for the YMCA in her hometown of Walla Walla, Washington. In that role, Todorovich oversaw and managed all sporting programs for the organization, including year-long and summer-long camps for advanced and beginning volleyball players. A native of Walla Walla, Washington, Todorovich graduated from WSU in 2013 with a bachelor s degree in communication. 4
