THE OPPONNENT: Memphis recently went 0-4 at the Memphis Invitational Tournament held Aug The Tigers dropped games to Austin Peay, Southern Illinois, Arkansas-Little Rock and Eastern Michigan. This will be the Tigers first road match of the season. DIG IT: Taylor Szypulski set a new careerhigh with 16 digs against Rice on Saturday. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Kelsie Hodges and Megan Baska were each named to the Rice Invitational All-Tournament team. RECORD WATCH: Junior libero Megan Baska moved into 9th place on the all-time digs list with 1,117 for her career. The series is currently tied at with the last meeting occuring in 2009 at the Memphis Invitational. ASU earned a 3-0 sweep over the Tigers to even the alltime series. OLD RIVALS: The ASU-Memphis series is tied for the second oldest series in ASU history with 50 meetings. ASU has also played Louisiana-Lafayette 50 times, with the Trojans from UALR topping the list with 60 meetings. FIRST VICTORY: Head Coach David Rehr collected his first victory as a Division I head coach with the win over Rice Aug. 25. KILL IT: Jasmine Terry tied her career high for digs with 18 against Rice. She previously had 18 digs against Troy in 2010 as a sophomore. DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Amanda Chaparro, Allison Kearney and Taylor Szypulski all had double-doubles against Rice on Aug. 25. Chaparro notched 10 kills and 10 digs against the Owls, while Kearney had 55 assists and 11 digs. Szypulski added 15 kills and 16 digs to complete the trifecta. SIBLING RIVALRY: Megan Baska s brother, David Baska, is entering his junior season as a punter on the Air Force Academy football squad. NEW FACES: ASU welcomed three new faces to the 2012 squad. Freshmen Hannah McRee and Haley Townsend join the squad after enjoying solid prep careers. Kelsey Sullivan joined the team after transferring from Pittsburg State and will have two years of eligibilty remaining. THE REHR FILE: David Rehr was named the seventh head coach in ASU volleyball history after serving as the head volleyball coach at Blinn College the previous nine

LOOKING AHEAD: As another volleyball season approaches, the excitement surrounding the Arkansas State Red Wolves volleyball program continues to build. There have been of changes over the last year that have raised the level of excitement around the program. The Red Wolves enjoyed a successful 2011 campaign that saw them finish the season with a record and 12-4 record in conference play which earned the squad a third straight Sun Belt Conference Western Division Crown and their first Western Division crown outright since Building on the momentum from three straight winnings seasons, Director of Athletis Dr. Dean Lee announced Jan. 11 that David Rehr had been selected as the seventh head coach in school in school history, giving the coach his first Division-I head coaching job after enjoying a successful stint at the junior college level. Rehr came to Arkansas State after serving as the head coach at Blinn College the previous nine years. During his time at Blinn he led the Buccaneers to two NJCAA National Championships (2008 and 2011), was a two-time NJCAA National Tournament Coach of the Year, a three-time AVCA Southwest Region Coach of the Year and a nine-time NJCAA District Coach of the Year. Rehr worked quickly to establish his first coaching staff, and hired Jessicca Weynand to serve as assistant coach. Weynand previously worked with Rehr at Blinn College where she helped lead the team to the 2011 NJCAA National Championship with a perfect 38-0 record that ended with four-set victory over Western Wyoming in the championship match. Rehr also added assistant coach Jeremy Thornburg in August to serve as the team s travel coordinator, video coordinator and assistant in the day-to-day operations of East Division Team Conference Overall WKU MT FIU Troy USA FAU the volleyball program. Upon being named head coach, Rehr immediatly began working on his first recruiting class that included a junior college transfer from Pittsburg State and an incoming freshman. The pair will have large task to fill the void left by Cayla Fielder, who was one of the most successful players in A-State volleyball history. With a strong recruiting class a talented group of returning players the excitement for the 2012 season is high. The Red Wolves return 12 lettermen, including five starters and its libero. Among the returning players are All-SBC second team selections Allison Kearney and Ashley Tipps. Kearney, a senior, is among the best setters in the SBC and ranks eighth on the alltime ASU career assists lists. Tipps enjoyed a career season finishing with career bests in kills, hitting percentage, matches played and a career low in hitting errors. Senior Jasmine Terry will anchor the front line attack for A-State. In 2011 she was second on the team with 314 kills and a.255 hitting percentage. Junior Shelby Crncic also returns and was among the team s best servers, while seniors Kelsie Hodges, Taylor Coughlin and Amanda Chaparro will provide leadership and will see increased time in Libero Megan Baska will anchor the defense after another strong year. She is 11th on ASU s all-time career digs list and had a career-high 40 digs against Alabama-Birmingham which was the third most in the rally scoring era in Sun Belt Conference history. LAST TIME OUT: The Arkansas State volleyball team went 1-1 at the Rice Invitational on Saturday, picking up a 25-22, 15-25, 32-30, victory over Rice, but falling 26-24, 16-25, 25-21, to Air Force in the nightcap. The victory against Rice gave head coach David Rehr his first career victory as a Division I head volleyball coach, while also giving the Red Wolves (1-2) their first match victory of the season. Against Rice, the Red Wolves battled the Owls in a thrilling four-set match that included 62 points in the third set. A-State

A-State had another opportunity to put the set away at 25-24, but the Owls again fought off the ASU attack to force the match to continue. After trading points and Rice having a set point opportunity of their own, the Red Wolves finally pulled away. With the score tied at 30-30, Jonesboro native Kelsie Hodges connected on a kill opportunity to put ASU ahead On set point Hodges connected again on an attacking opportunity to give ASU the set and a 2-1 advantage in the match. Taylor Szypulski led ASU with eight kills in the set, while Allison Kearney added 18 assists. We could have easily laid down and died instead of being in the situation were win, Rehr said. I told the kids I was proud of the way we wanted to be in the match and the fight they showed and then we ended up winning that set and that propelled us through and gave us a lot of confidence. In the first set ASU never trailed and the score was only tied at once early in the set. The Red Wolves had a.200 attacking percentage in the set and fought off a late rally from the Owls to secure a win. In the decisive fourth set ASU trailed 20-18, but rallied to score the next three points to take a lead. Later on, Jasmine Terry connected on a kills to give A- State a lead and to setup match point, which was scored on an attacked error by the Owls to give Arkansas State the 3-1 match victory. Terry tied a career-high with 18 kills in the match, while Szypulski added 15 kills and Amanda Chaparro added 10. Szypulski set a career-high with 16 digs, while Megan Baska added 24 digs, Kerney added 11 and Chaparro collected 10. Kearney led ASU with 55 assists, just 11 shy of her career-high. In the match against Air Force, the Red Wolves lost the first after having a set point opportunity at but failing to convert. The Falcons captilized on the A- State miscue and scored three straight points to take the first set. A-State rebounded in the second set, picking up a victory behind strong performances from Terry and Hodges who had four kills each in the frame. However, Air Force came out strong in the third set and earned the victory and prevailed in the fourth set to take the victory. We had had several teaching moments in this tournament and I really thought the light bulb clicked against Rice and then you lose the lesson against Air Force, Rehr said. I think that is the hardest part, but this is when you learn lessons. You don t learn much after a win, you learn after a loss. It is just about learning that lesson and not putting ourselves in that situation again. Terry led ASU with 14 kills in the match, while Hodges added 12 and Szypulski finished with 11. Kearney added 43 assists to give her a total of 98 assists across both matches on Saturday. Baska added 27 digs, while Taylor Coughlin had 10. Arkansas State Quick Facts Location: Jonesboro, Ark.
