(Waverly) A BRIEF LOOK AT THE 2014 NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL TEAM Despite being among the youngest squads in school history, Nebraska returns plenty of experience from a 2013 team that posted a 26-7 record, advanced to an NCAA Regional Final for the second consecutive season and finished the year with a No. 7 ranking. Although the Huskers feature the fewest seniors (1) and most underclassmen (11) in school history this fall, Nebraska still returns five starters - plus libero Justine Wong-Orantes - from The lone player Nebraska must replace is a key loss, as Kelsey Robinson concluded her career by earning firstteam All-America honors in She was also chosen as the Big Ten Player of the Year and a finalist for the Honda Award. Robinson led NU in kills (530), attacks (1,206) and aces (32) last fall, while ranking second in digs (229) and fourth in blocks (70). Despite Robinson s graduation, Nebraska still returns plenty of production in Nebraska returns 96 percent of its assists from last season, led by senior Mary Pollmiller. After splitting time Player early last season with Kelly Hunter, Pollmiller emerged as Kadie Rolfzen the Huskers full-time setter and went on to record 1,279 assists. She earned honorable-mention All-America Mary Pollmiller accolades in 2011 and NU returns every middle blocker from the 2013 roster. Four Huskers saw action at middle blocker last season, and all four players were either freshmen or sophomores. SCOUTING PENN STATE Penn State (29-3, 17-2 Big Ten) ranks first in the conference in hitting percentage (.354), opponent hitting percentage (.142), kills (14.66 per set) and aces (1.92) per set. That total ranks third in NCAA history, and the Huskers have gone on to appear in six NCAA Finals. 4 OLYMPIANS Four Huskers have played for Team USA in the Olympics, including Jordan Larson who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics. Other Huskers who have competed in the Olympics include Lori Endicott (1992, 1996), Allison Weston (2000) and Nancy Metcalf (2004). 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Nebraska has won three national championships in school history, including a perfect 34-0 season in 2000, John Cook s first year as head coach. The Huskers also won national titles in 1995 (32-1) and 2006 (33-2). 2 NEAR THE NATIONAL LEAD Nebraska leads the nation in numerous areas, a list of which can be found on the following page. But the Huskers are also nearing the national lead in other categories. NU ranks second nationally in all-time victories, NCAA Tournament appearances and first-team AVCA All-Americans. HUSKERS EXTEND RECORD POLL STREAK TO 476 WEEKS Nebraska has appeared in every one of the AVCA s 476 all-time weekly polls. NU and Stanford are the only two programs to appear in every AVCA poll, dating back to its inception in Nebraska has spent a nation-leading 423 weeks in the top 10 after making a return this week at No. 10. HUSKERS LONE SENIOR AMONG THE NATION S BEST Tri-captain Mary Pollmiller is Nebraska s lone senior in The Huskers may only have one senior, but Pollmiller is one of the nation s top setters. She is in her second season at Nebraska after spending her first two years at Tennessee in 2011 and Pollmiller was the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, and she has NCAA ACTIVE CAREER ASSIST LEADERS Rk. Player, Team 1. Micha Hancock, Penn State 5, Lexi Dannemiller, Michigan 5, Nikki Husfeldt, North Dakota 5, Mary Pollmiller, Nebraska 5,042 earned honorable-mention AVCA All-America accolades twice in her career, including last season (also in 2011). Pollmiller owns 5,042 career assists, a total that ranks fourth nationally. Three of the nation s top-four active players in career assists are Big Ten Conference setters. CHALLENGING SCHEDULE When the preseason AVCA Top 25 poll came out in August, Nebraska was scheduled to play 13 of its 29 matches against ranked teams, the second-highest total nationally. NU began its tough slate immediately by facing No. 3 Stanford and No. 13 Florida State on opening weekend. The Huskers have hosted three top-three teams this season (No. 3 Stanford, No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Penn State). Nebraska is 1-2 in those matches with the lone win against Penn State. Nebraska is 3-5 against ranked opponents this season, and six of the eight matches are against teams currently ranked in the top 11, and four are in the top four. The Huskers played a school-record 15 regular-season matches against ranked teams last year. In addition to the ranked opponents, NU will play 15 matches - more than half its schedule - against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams, including 12 matches against teams that advanced to the round of 16. HUSKERS SERVE UP YOUTH IN 2014 The 2014 Huskers are one of the youngest squads in the nation and arguably the youngest in program history. The Huskers 16-player roster features one senior (Mary Pollmiller), four juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen. Nebraska features the fewest seniors (1) and most underclassmen (11) in school history. The one senior on this year s roster ties for the fewest in Nebraska history, as this marks the seventh time in the 40-year history of the program that a Husker team has had only one senior. Nebraska boasts 11 underclassmen on its roster, tied for the most underclassmen on a roster in school history. Nebraska s 1978 roster featured 14 underclassmen and its 1979 roster featured 12 underclassmen, but NU fielded both a varsity and JV team both seasons, and the varsity roster consisted of fewer than 11 underclassmen. The Huskers feature the fewest seniors of any team that was ranked in the preseason AVCA Top 25. Of the more than 330 Division I volleyball programs, Nebraska is one of 48 teams featuring one or no senior. NU is one of 64 teams nationally with 11 or more underclassmen on its 2014 roster. TOP FRESHMEN LOOK TO BUILD ON IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE SEASONS Sophomores Kadie Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes produced two of Nebraska s top statistical freshman seasons at their positions in Rolfzen, an outside hitter, tallied 377 kills as a freshman, while Wong-Orantes produced a team-leading 399 digs. Rolfzen s 377 kills and 3.46 kills per set both ranked as the third-highest totals ever by a Husker freshman. Rolfzen was named a third-team AVCA All-American as a freshman, and she was also the AVCA North Region Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Big Ten selection. Wong-Orantes 399 digs tied for the highest freshman total in Husker history. In 2013, Wong-Orantes became just the third Husker freshman to lead the team in digs. This fall, Wong-Orantes will look to become the first player in school history to lead the Huskers in digs as both a freshman and sophomore.

5 NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL LEADER IN COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS TRI-CAPTAINS NAMED During Nebraska s summer trip to Japan and China, the players and coaching staff gathered and discussed captains for the upcoming season. The players unanimously selected Mary Pollmiller as captain, and Pollmiller then sought help in leading the 2014 Huskers. After Pollmiller s request for additional captains, junior Alicia Ostrander and sophomore Justine Wong-Orantes were also named captains. NEBRASKA PICKED SECOND IN PRESEASON BIG TEN POLL Nebraska was the preseason choice to finish second in the Big Ten Conference this season, behind defending national champion Penn State. The Huskers have finished first or second in each of their first three seasons in the Big Ten, including a conference title in Nebraska finished second last season with a 16-4 record. KADIE ROLFZEN AND POLLMILLER NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM Senior setter Mary Pollmiller and sophomore outside hitter Kadie Rolfzen were among 15 players named to the preseason All-Big Ten team in a vote of the league s 14 head coaches. Rolfzen was one of six unanimous selections. Rolfzen was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2013, while Pollmiller was an honorable-mention selection. HUSKERS HOPE HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF FOLLOWING INTERNATIONAL TRIP Nebraska got a head start on its fall season this summer, when the Huskers 12 returning players embarked on a 19-day trip to Japan and China. In addition to sightseeing and team bonding, the Huskers practiced and took on top professional teams during their trip. The NCAA allows a team to take a foreign trip every four years, and Head Coach John Cook has made it a habit to take his team to Asia. The trips have usually paid off with successful seasons. Cook took his first team to Asia prior to the 2000 season, his first as Nebraska s head coach. The Huskers responded with a 34-0 season, and the program s second national championship. In 2006, Cook took his team back to Asia and the results were the : another national championship. The Huskers went 33-1 following their international trip and capped the national title with a 3-1 victory over Stanford in front of 17,209 fans at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Nebraska s most recent Asia trip prior to this summer was in Although NU did not win the national title that year, it did put together a 29-3 season that included a Big Ten title. Nebraska took a No. 3 ranking into the NCAA Tournament but was upset in a four-set loss at No. 11 Washington in the NCAA Regional Semifinal. In the last three seasons following a Cook-led foreign trip, Nebraska has responded by winning three conference titles and two national championships while posting a 96-4 record. HOME SWEET HOME Nebraska returns for its second season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in The Huskers first season in the renovated Devaney Center was a historic one. Nebraska set an NCAA record with an average attendance of 8,175 fans per match in NU led the nation in attendance for the first time since 1992, ending Hawaii s 21-year reign as the national leader. Nebraska has ranked in the top three nationally in attendance every season since 1990 (24 straight seasons). The Huskers sold out every match in 2013, stretching their home sellout streak to 201 consecutive matches by season s end, the longest sellout streak in the history of NCAA women s athletics. The Devaney Center has hosted the three largest regular-season crowds in NCAA history and seven of the 10 largest. NU finished 16-3 at the Devaney Center in 2013, including a 7-3 mark vs. ranked opponents. THREE FORMER HUSKERS CAPTURE GOLD WITH TEAM USA Team USA - with former Huskers Kayla Banwarth, Jordan Larson-Burbach and Kelsey Robinson - beat China 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 16-25, 26-24) on Oct. 12 to win the FIVB World Championship in Italy. The U.S. Women had never before won gold at any of the three major international volleyball events: World Championship, World Cup or Olympic Games. Larson-Burbach was one of the team s top hitters throughout the tournament, while Banwarth captured the starting libero role and never relinquished it. Robinson, one of the team s youngest players, was a key contributor in the early rounds of the tournament. 5 NEBRASKA: A NATIONAL LEADER Nebraska is a national leader in collegiate volleyball.
