This year the Bears are a Division I counter and are mandated to play a schedule that is primarily made up of Division I teams. The Bears are still ineligible for NCAA postseason play until the season.

5 Season Preview For University of Northern Colorado volleyball head coach Ron Alexander, life could not be much better as his team prepares for the 2004 season, his third as head coach of the Bears program. Alexander, who has a gaudy 63-5 record in two seasons on the bench, not only returns nine players from last season s squad that compiled a 32-2 overall record, won the Division I Independent Championship and finished the season with a 26-match winning streak, but also returns redshirt senior Erin Deffenbaugh, the 2002 AVCA Division II National Player of the Year, who sat out the 2003 season with an injury. And life got even sweeter this summer when Alexander became a father for the third time. It has been a hectic summer, said Alexander, whose program enters its second of four seasons of reclassification to Division I in The move to Division I has really escalated the intensity of our recruiting. My son Ben was born on June 24 and I had one day to welcome him into the world before flying somewhere to go recruiting. The move has forced our recruiting attention to be shifted up about a year. The move to Division I is a big step for our program and we are trying to send a message to the next level that we belong. We have always had talent, but this season we are three, four or even five deep at most every position and it will be a tough decision on who plays, but that is a good problem to have. The focus of most of the attention this year will be on Deffenbaugh and her surgically repaired knee. Two years ago, she was the most dominant player in Division II, amazing crowds with her leaping ability and powerful attacks while leading the country with a 6.14 kills per game average on her way to National Player of the Year honors. But an injury suffered last summer kept her from competition a season ago and that could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for UNC, who will benefit from having her in the lineup against a tough Division I schedule this fall. Deffenbaugh is already the school record holder for kills in a match (39), season (743) and career (1,908) and needs only 769 kills this season to become the Division II all-time leader (a category she has been grandfathered into by playing her first three seasons as a D-II player). Not playing last year was hard on Erin, although she was like a fourth coach on the bench for us, Alexander said. She is such a great leader and a phenomenal athlete and we expect her to take it to another level this season because her injury will not be a factor at all. She has had an outstanding career and wants to add that last chapter this year so she can be compared to the greatest players who have ever played NCAA volleyball in our region. Deffenbaugh will anchor an outside hitter core that grew by leaps-and-bounds last year with her on the sidelines. On her way to Division I Independent Freshman of the Year honors, sophomore Terin Ledall (114 games, 4.01 kills) led the team in kills and added 3.25 digs per game. Junior Amanda Wiggins (112 games, 3.73 kills/game) also had a breakout year in 2003, ranking second on the squad in kills and adding 3.23 digs per game after being given the opportunity to move into a starter s role. The group is bolstered by senior right side hitter Maggie Ledall (114 games, 2.86 kills/game), the older sister of Terin, who shattered the school record for attack percentage last season by hitting.413 (326k-75e-608a),.074 percentage points higher than the previous mark. Other attackers include sophomore OH/MB Meredith Klein (28 games, 0.29 kills/game), sophomore right side Lizzy Rhoads (32 games, 1.31 kills/game), redshirt freshman Dulcie Stone, freshman Courtney Bourret and University of New Mexico transfer Lauren Dunsmoor, who was one of the top prospects in Colorado out of high school and played in 17 games with the Lobos in 2003 before an injury ended her season prematurely. In previous years we were always hoping that nobody would get hurt, Alexander said. Finally we are able to add plenty of talent at every position which will really help us. It is all a credit to our recruiting and to the type of kids we are able to bring in. They all come from a good family environment and are looking to get a good education at UNC. The middle blocker position will be manned by senior tricaptain Danelle Angus (114 games, 2.71 kills/game), who has improved her hitting percentage, kills and blocks per game averages in each of her first three seasons at UNC. Last season she hit.289 and averaged a team-high 0.96 blocks per game. Danelle s experience is definitely her strength, Alexander added. She has been through the wars here and that should help her work alongside our younger players. Angus is joined by sophomore returnees Klein and Jill Peotter (15 games, 0.33 kills/game) and a trio of multitalented newcomers in Lenay Goble, Dani Veal and Callie Vrooman, who will redshirt after suffering a knee injury during the summer. Goble s name will instantly be recognized by Bear volleyball fans, as her older sister Teale ( ) was a UNC standout and All-American who ranks No. 2 in program history in both kills (1,852) and digs (1,626). Lenay, who stands 6 2", was a three-time all-state volleyball selection who led her team to a state runner-up finish in 2003 and was also a two-time all-state basketball choice who led her team to an undefeated season and state championship her senior year. In addition, she was also the valedictorian of her senior class, making her one of three current Bears player to share that honor. Veal, who also stands 6 2" tall, was an all-state prep volleyball and basketball standout who will showcase her hardwood skills in the winter with the Bears basketball program. Vrooman, the 2003 Colorado 3A Player of the Year, did one better than either Goble or Veal, as she led Platte Valley High School to both the state volleyball and basketball championship her senior season. She also already knows assistant coach Lori Willadsen well, as Vrooman played both her freshman and sophomore seasons of high school under Willadsen at Platte Valley. While the outside hitter and middle blocker positions are filled with experienced players, the youngest position on the court for the Bears will be at setter. Two-time All-American Linnea Killsgaard capped her outstanding career last season by not only becoming the Bears all-time assists leader (5,329) but also her assists per game career average ranked her No. 2 in NCAA history. Left to battle out for the setter s starting position will be junior Corrinne Chapin (16 games, 0.69 assists/game) and freshman Ashley Pagel. Chapin has the early advantage after playing behind and learning from Kiilsgaard over the past two years, while Pagel brings an accurate touch to the floor. Corrinne proved this spring that she is capable of running our offense, Alexander stated. The team likes playing for her but at the same time Ashley is going to be the type of player who is not content with sitting on the bench; she will compete to earn playing time. Defensive specialists and liberos round out the Bears roster as the team looks to replace Kristi Krom, the only libero the

6 program has every known. Junior Amy Casselman (114 games, 1.57 digs/game) has recorded nearly 500 digs in the past two years and will jump into the libero position this season after playing as a defensive specialist her first two years at UNC. Other defensive specialists include freshmen Abby Mayne, Jen Kawakami and Stone, if she does not find time at the outside hitter position. Including our incoming group of freshmen, this is arguably the most talented team we have had at UNC, Alexander said. The newcomers bring a lot of athleticism and we have a brand of student-athlete that is made to excel. Our entire roster is filled with players who are good people, good students and local products who want to win. I think we will be a tough team to win three games from this year because our players just keep coming after you and will not give any match away. The Bears have a very challenging schedule this season, with five teams (BYU, Robert Morris, Saint Mary s, Utah and Wisconsin-Green Bay) that made the NCAA Tournament a season ago on the slate. Although the program is still ineligible for NCAA postseason play, they will have the chance to defend their D-I Independent Championship at the end of the season in a round-robin event against six other independent squads, including first-year Division I teams North and South Dakota State, each of whom were UNC rivals when all were members of the North Central Conference (NCC) just two seasons ago. We are definitely looking forward to defending our independent title, Alexander said. It will be tough, however, playing six matches the final weekend of the season when most teams are beat up, so it will be hard to go undefeated at the event again. It is also nice to play North and South Dakota State again because we have historical rivalries with each team and enjoyed playing against them when we were in the NCC. It is a necessary evil to play a schedule like we are in order to help build a program that will be ready to reach the NCAA Tournament, Alexander continued. When we are finally eligible for NCAA postseason play in , we want to be knocking on the door of a Top-25 ranking and we also want to make an annual trip to the NCAA Tournament. We do not want to be that last team into the field. We want to have a chance to win some matches in the tournament, and if our players continue to buy into the system with blood, sweat and tears then I think we will be able to reach those goals. Those goals definitely seem attainable when you compare the Bears program to all other Division I and II teams over the past two seasons. In that period, the best two-year stretch in school history, Northern Colorado s 63 wins are fifth-most nationwide, while their five losses and.926 winning percentage are fourth best in the country compared against all other teams. This team is going to be fun to watch, Alexander said. It will be a very good team to get behind and cheer for if you are a UNC fan. Hopefully we will double the size of some of our crowds as we take our game to another level of play.
