2 About New Mexico (22-7, 11-5 MWC)... The Lobos landed squarely in third place in the MWC, following a 3-0 win over TCU in the MWC season finale. It is the highest the Lobos have placed in the league since it formed in 1999 and the highest conference finish since 1996 (2nd - WAC Mountain Division)... Jeanne Fairchild was named third team AVCA All- American, the first Lobo volleyball All-American since... Jeanne Fairchild led the Lobos and the MWC with 4.81 kills and 5.12 points per set, while sophomore Jade Michaelsen led UNM setters and was second in the league with assists per set... Defensively, junior Anna Lehne led the front row with 1.27 blocks per set, while senior Gayle Tripp ran the back row, and was second in the league, with 4.44 digs per set... Sophomore Taylor Hadfield had the top hitting percentage at Michaelsen and freshman Allison Buck led the team with 20 aces each. Tripp followed with UNM did not drop a set to start the season at 24-0, a school record. The NCAA record is 105 consecutive by Florida in The 8-0 season start ranks fourth-best in program history... UNM finished their 11- match September road trip with a 9-2 record... The Lobos racked up the travel miles this season. The final regular season mileage tally is 11,669 miles. Add on the 13,790 miles from the trip to Argentina at the beginning of Summer Break and the Lobos logged 25,459 miles from May 27-Nov. 14, UNM ended an 8-match losing streak against UNLV on Sept. 27 and won for the first time in Vegas since 2000 with a 3-0 sweep... The Lobos won for the first time in Laramie since 2001 with a 3-0 sweep of Wyoming on Oct With the Nov. 1 win at BYU, the Lobos won the season series against the Cougars for the first time since It was also the first time since 1997 that UNM swept the UNLV season series and since 2000 to sweep the Wyoming season series. Fairchild, Tripp and Michaelsen Named 2008 All-MWC... University of New Mexico senior Jeanne Fairchild has been named the 2008 Mountain West Conference Volley Season Recap Lobo Volleyball (22-7, 11-5 MWC/3rd place) QUICK HITS Fairchild Named All-American... Senior Jeanne Fairchild became the first Lobo volleyball All- American since 1992, the fifth in UNM history. Fairchild was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Third Team. The senior from Albuquerque, N.M. finished the season ranked third in kills per set with a 4.81 average. She finished her Lobo career ranked third on the UNM all-time career kills list with 1,238. Kwasigroch Named Lobo Club Co-Female Student-Athlete of the Year... Senior Sarah Kwasigroch was named Lobo Club Co-Female Student-Athlete of the Year, along with senior tennis player Mackenzie White. Kwasigroch finished her UNM career ranked seventh on the Lobos career assists list with 2,634. The biggest achievement of her Lobo career was coordinating UNM s Volley for the Cure Night on Oct. 23 against UNLV. It is the second year in a row that a Lobo volleyball player has received the honor (Gayle Tripp, 2008). Fairchild Named MWC Player of the Year; Lobos Land 3 On All-MWC Team... Senior Jeanne Fairchild became the first Lobo to be named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. Fairchild was joined on the 2008 All-MWC Team by teammates Libero of the Year Gayle Tripp and setter Jade Michaelsen. Fairchild became the first Lobo to repeat as an all-mwc honoree. Lobos Among Tops In Attendance... New Mexico finished the 2008 season ranked 20th in the national attendance rankings. UNM averaged 1,570 fans over the 13 home matches of the 2008 season. The Lobos season-high 2,256 fans showed up on Nov. 6 against CSU. The Lobos are second in the MWC behind Colorado State in 11th with 2,387 fans per match. Buck and Rhoades Playing In Europe... Sophomores-to-be Allison Buck and Ashley Rhoades will spend part of their summer vacation in Europe on the Bring It Promotions/USA Development Team. The pair will train in Zurich, Switzerland, from July 15-19, before competing in the Fifth Annual European Global Challenge in Croatia, July Head coach of the USA team will be Colorado State s Tom Hilbert. This is the third summer that New Mexico will be represented on team - Jeanne Fairchild and Gayle Tripp (2007), and Rose Morris (2008). Fairchild Plays Pro In Puerto Rico; Tripp Headed To Europe In Fall... Jeanne Fairchild spent Spring 2009 playing professionally in Puerto Rico, finishing up the season with the Vaqueras de Bayamon. Fairchild will finish her degree at UNM in the Fall. Gayle Tripp graduated in May and plans to play professionally in Europe this Fall. ball Co-Player of the Year by a vote of the league s coaches, along with Lori Baird of Utah. Fairchild, senior Gayle Tripp and sophomore Jade Michaelsen were named to the All-Mountain West Conference Team. Tripp was also named Co-Libero of the Year, along with Camille Cunningham of UNLV. Fairchild, an outside hitter, ranked third in the nation in kills per set at 4.81 while leading the MWC all season in the category. The Albuquerque, N.M., native also led the league in points per set with 5.12 and ranked 11th in hitting percentage at.308. In just her third season with the Lobos, Fairchild cracked the 1,000-career kills mark and finishes her career ranked third on the UNM all-time career kills list with 1,238. Fairchild became the first Lobo to be a repeat all-mwc selection. Last season, Fairchild joined Anna Reines (2002) as the only Lobo to receive all-mwc honors from the young league. Fairchild was also the first Lobo to repeat as an MWC Player of the Week, receiving the honor three times in 2008 and once in Fairchild was named to four all-tournament teams during the season MCM Elegante Lobo Classic, George Mason Patriot Invitational (MVP), Nebraska Ameritas Players Challenge, and UTA Holiday Inn Invitational. Fairchild was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Second Team this season for her work in the classroom. The league has also recognized Fairchild s academic prowess with MWC Scholar-Athlete honors in 2007 and 2008 and Academic All- MWC honors in 2006, 2007 and Tripp became the Lobos all-time career dig leader this season on Nov. 6 against Colorado State and finished with 1,578 career digs. The Rio Rancho, N.M., native took over third place on the MWC s career digs list in the last weekend of the season. Tripp was second in the MWC in digs per set all season, finishing 70th in the nation, and averaged Tripp finished her career with 107 career service aces. Tripp was named the MVP of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic at the beginning of the 2008 season for her outstanding defensive performance. Not only is Tripp active on the court, she is active in the classroom and on campus. Tripp is a three-time Academic All-MWC honoree and is an officer on the UNM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Tripp also serves the University as a Senator in the Associated Students of UNM. Michaelsen became the Lobos starting setter midway through her freshman year in 2007 and has been the team s on-court general ever since. The Tucson, Ariz., native is second in the conference in assists 2009 New Mexico Volleyball

3 2008 Season Recap with per set, 28th nationally, and currently has 1,928 career assists in two seasons. Michaelsen became just the second Lobo to be named MWC Player of the Week on Sept. 29, following her outstanding performances on the road at San Diego State and UNLV. She was also named to three all-tournament teams during the season MCM Elegante Lobo Classic, George Mason Patriot Invitational, and Nebraska Ameritas Players Challenge. Michaelsen was an ESPN the Magazine Academic All- District IV nominee this season and an Academic All-MWC selection in 2007 and She earned 2009 MWC Scholar-Athlete honors. Kwasigroch Named Lobo Club Female Student-Athlete of the Year... Sarah Kwasigroch, a senior defensive specialist/setter from Palos Park, Ill., finished her UNM career ranked seventh on the Lobos career assists list with 2,634. A pharmacy major, Kwasigroch was a four-time Academic all- Mountain West honoree and is expected to make the annual MWC Scholar-Athlete list for a third time this summer... Kwasigroch s biggest achievement during her Lobo career was coordinating the Lobos Volley for the Cure Night on Oct. 23 against UNLV. The evening s events raised over $3,200 for the American Cancer Society and the promotion of breast cancer awareness. The Lobo team captain promoted the event in honor of her mother, Patricia, a breast cancer survivor. Lobos in the Classroom... Nine members of the 2008 volleyball team earned recognition in the classroom from the Mountain West Conference. Jade Michaelsen, Allie Suiter, Kelly Williamson and Amy Wong were named MWC Scholar-Athletes at the end of the school year. Michaelsen, Suiter and Williamson along with Allison Buck, Jeanne Fairchild, Sarah Kwasigroch, Lisa Meeter and Gayle Tripp were named Academic All-MWC following the season. Fairchild Named To ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team... UNM senior Jeanne Fairchild was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Six Volleyball Second Team on Nov. 6 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co- SIDA). The Albuquerque native is sporting a 3.52 cumulative grade point average in Communications and Journalism at the University of New Mexico, while leading the Lobos to their winningest season since Winning Ways... New Mexico s 22 overall wins are the highest total by a Lobo team since UNM finished the season 11-5 in MWC action, the most conference wins by the Lobos since the MWC formed in 1999 and most in any conference since UNM Most Overall Wins UNM Most Conference Wins Final NCAA RPI Announced... The NCAA released its final Volleyball RPI report. The Lobos ended the season ranked 66th. UNM was the third-highest ranked MWC member. Unofficially, RichKern.com has the Lobos RPI ranked 65 and the Lobos Pablo ranking is 59. Kern also had the Lobos ranked 33 in his final poll. Lobos on Television... The Lobos had four opportunities to strut their stuff in front of a television audience in Nov. 6 was UNM s final televised match of the regular season. UNM ended up 2-2 on television this season with 3-0 wins over BYU on Oct. 2 and Nov. 1, and a 3-2 loss on Oct. 12 and a 3-1 loss on Nov. 6 to No. 13 Colorado State. MWC Players of the Week... Jeanne Fairchild earned her third Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honor of the 2008 season on Nov. 17 for her 16-kill performance against Air Force on Nov. 13. For Fairchild, it is the fourth weekly honor of her career. Fairchild picked up her second Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honor of the season on Oct. 27 for her performance against UNLV and San Diego State. Setter Jade Michaelsen was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 29 along with CSU s Tessa Nelson. It is the first weekly honor of Michaelsen s career. Michaelsen was the second Lobo named to receive the weekly honor this season. Jeanne Fairchild was named MWC Player of the Week on Sept. 8. It is the first time that UNM has had multiple MWC Players of the Week selected in one season. UNM players have only been selected five times in the league s 10- year history. Fairchild Joins Top Five... Senior outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild reached the 1,000- kill career plateau with 24 kills against Utah on Oct. 4. Fairchild moved into the Top Five on the UNM career kills list against BYU on Nov. 1, finishing up in fourth place. She finished her Lobo career with 1,238 career kills and moved into third place. Senior libero Gayle Tripp needed 17 digs to become the Lobos career leader and got 20, moving past Sharon Browning (1,504; ) for the top spot on the UNM career digs list in the fourth set of the Nov. 6 match against Colorado State. Tripp joined the UNM 1,000-Dig Club on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, against UNLV. She finished her Lobo career with 1,578 career digs and moved into third-place on the MWC career digs list. Senior setter Sarah Kwasigroch finished her Lobo career ranked among the top-10 on the New Mexico list for career assists. Kwasigroch finished with 2,634 career assists, sitting at seventh on the career list. Kwasigroch finished the season ranked 16th on the Mountain West Conference career assists list. The Lobos 11-2 non-conference record currently ranks as the third-best in program history following the final regular season matches against New Mexico State and Virginia Commonwealth. The crowd at the Devaney Center in Lincoln on Sept. 12 to watch UNM-St. John s and Nebraska-LSU topped out at an NCAA regular season record of 13,412. The next day 4,153 crammed into the cozy confines of the NU Coliseum to watch the Huskers win their 107th consecutive home match in the Coliseum. Since then, Clemson and North Carolina set a new mark of 13,797 on Oct. 24. The match in Chapel Hill was held in conjunction with the UNC Basketball season kickoff event. Fairchild Picks Up Fourth All-Tournament Honor of Season... Senior Jeanne Fairchild earned her fourth all-tournament team honor of the season on Sept. 20 at the UT Arlington Holiday Inn Invitational. Fairchild and the Lobos beat Sam Houston State and host UTA in a tournament that was shortened due to Hurricane Ike. Lobos Earn Runner-Up At Ameritas Players Challenge... The Lobos earned runner-up honors at the Ameritas Players Challenge, hosted by Nebraska. UNM beat St. John s, 3-0, on Sept. 12 and lost to No. 2 Nebraska, 3-0, in the winner s match on Sept. 13. Jeanne Fairchild and Jade Michaelsen were named to the all-tournament team. It is the third all-tournament team honor for each player this season. Lobos Win George Mason Patriot Invitational... The Lobos picked up their second tournament title of the 2008 season with a 4-0 weekend at the George Mason Patriot Invitational. UNM had three-set wins over Rutgers, La Salle, St. Francis (Pa.) and George Mason. Senior Jeanne Fairchild was named tournament MVP, while teammates Rose Morris and Jade Michaelsen were named to the all-tournament team. Lobos Win MCM Elegante Lobo Classic... The Lobos won the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic with wins over Central Arkansas, Idaho State and Loyola Marymount. Gayle Tripp was named the tournament MVP and was joined by teammates Jeanne Fairchild, Anna Lehne and Jade Michaelsen on the all-tournament team. Tripp recorded 50 digs and missed only one reception in 65 attempts in nine sets to lead the Lobos defensively. Fairchild took care of the offense with 40 kills in eight sets, while Lehne had 22 kills to go along with 17 blocks. Michaelsen set up the offense with 94 assists and was second to Lehne with 12 blocks. Playing Against the Best... The Lobos had seven teams on the 2008 schedule that participated in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, including Mountain West Conference members BYU, Colorado State and UNLV. Three non-conference foes will be participating in the Ameritas Players Challenge St. John s, LSU, and host Nebraska. Instate rival New Mexico State also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in Morris Fills Passport... Junior Rose Morris was able to add some stamps to her passport in July. The outside hitter from Albuquerque competed in the 2008 Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, for the Bring It Promotions/USA Developmental Team. Morris was a starter for the team that took fourth place in the Brioni Division. She earned a spot on the team following a tryout with the U.S. Women s National Team in February at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Morris added passport stamps from Slovenia and Italy during sightseeing and training for the tournament. An Olympic Connection... Former Lobo assistant coach Jenny Lang Ping served as the head coach of the United States National Volleyball Team that competed for a gold medal in Beijing over the weekend. Team USA finished the 2008 Olympics with a silver medal, coming up short against Brazil, 3-1. Lang Ping was an assistant for Blase Czerniakowski and Laurel Brassey from and at UNM. The native of Beijing already owns Olympic medals as a player and coach for China and was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2002 culminating a career that established her as one of the finest female volleyball players ever. Currently, Lang Ping is a the only female head coach among the top 20 countries listed in the FIVB World Ranking, a rarity in international women s volleyball circles. It is Set not Game... The NCAA Volleyball Rules Committee passed several rules changes leading into the 2008 season. The one that will talk some getting used to is the terminology change from using the word set instead of game. The rationale is that the volleyball community worldwide refers to sets rather than games. Playing to 25, not Another rule change for the 2008 season is the number of points to win sets 1-4. Teams will need 25 points to win, instead of 30, falling in line with international scoring. The intention of the rule is to increase fan and player focus and fan excitement. The number of points required to win the fifth set remains at 15. Substitutions will reduce to 12 per set New Mexico Volleyball
