New Mexico came under the leadership of Kelley McKee and her staff in 2002 after winning only five games in 2001 under first-year coach Tom Peterson. McKee doubled the team s win total in 2002 but 2003 and 2004 saw a decline as McKee worked to get the program and its players in the direction she envisioned. Finally, that vision is becoming clear to the Lobo faithful. The team accomplished many feats that had not been achieved in almost a decade. They began with one of the best starts in the history of Lobo volleyball, going 8-2 over their first 10 games. It was the best start under McKee and tied the 1994 team for the fifth best start in the program s 30-year history. UNM strung together an impressive six-match win streak early in the season as well. The Lobos won three straight matches at the University of Montana Invitational and at their own Hilton Albuquerque Classic, claiming two tournament titles en route to the ninth best win streak, and the longest since Even the tournament championship at the Montana Invitational accomplished something that hadn t been done by New Mexico since It was the first tournament title claimed by the Lobos on the road in 12 years. The Lobos made even more progress with great showings against BYU, Utah and Colorado tate. The Lobos beat Utah, 3-2, on ept. 24 in Albuquerque, ending a 17-match losing streak to the Utes that dated back to They topped Colorado tate 3-1 on Oct. 22 at home, ending an 18-match losing streak. They just missed upsetting then-ranked No. 22 BYU, falling in five games. However, it was the first time since 1992 that UNM had played to five against the Cougars and only the second time since 1994 that the Lobos had not been shut out. UNM also put up great fights against UNLV and an Diego tate, falling just short in five games. McKee set a new best with the win at TCU on Oct. 8, which signified the team s 11th of the season. Individually, the members of the team broke numerous records and set the standards for future Lobos at unparallel levels. With all but three lettermen returning next season and another stellar recruiting class, the Lobos will continue their ascension to the top of the conference, surpassing more milestones in their hunt for New Mexico s first MWC Championship. ONDRUP BREAK INTO MWC RECORD BOOK While visiting an Diego tate and UNLV, ondrup broke into the top-5 of the MWC Career Blocks book. he sits fourth, passing Aspen McPartland of an Diego tate s 398 block assists and places fifth in total blocks, passing BYU s Jackie Bundy s 420. he also finished her career in fifth place on the all-time games played list, seeing time in 407. As one of the top blockers in the conference s history, it seems impossible that she never received a MWC Player of the Week award or placed on the All-Conference team. ONDRUP ET UNM BLOCKING RECORD enior Chelsea ondrup set a new UNM career blocking record at the Montana Invitational. ondrup, who entered the tournament tied with Linda Archuleta ( , 84) for the record of 326, stuffed back 19, moving her career total to 345. he now has 465 career blocks. ondrup also holds the UNM career block assist record with 433. he broke the record of 252 held by Laurel Luman ( ) last year. ondrup is the only Lobo in the program s history to ever record 400 blocks and one of just four to make 300. CHANGE FOR UNM CAREER RECORD BOOK enior Chelsea ondrup set two new career records and etched her name on a few other lists. ondrup is eighth on the all-time Blocks per game page, averaging 1.14 in her 407 games. he has the fifth most games played and tied sixth with 112 matches played. ondrup also broke onto the career points list with finishing ninth with 1, Junior Kelly Therkelsen broke into the all-time block assists at Utah on Oct. 14. he has quickly moved up the charts, now holding the fourth spot with 247. Therkelsen needs three blocks to take over third and six for second. Therkelsen is also tenth in total blocks with 253. he needs four to take over ninth and six to take over eighth. Freshman arah Kwasigroch had an unbelievable start to her career as the setter for UNM. Through 100 games, Kwasigroch dished out 1,088 assists, averaging per game. Her current per game average is way above the previous record held by Jocelyn Funk, who averaged apg. If Kwasigroch can maintain this average, she is set to accumulate over 4,300 in a four-year career. The 10th most assists at UNM is 1,490, which Kwasigroch should pass as a sophomore. The most assists in a career at New Mexico is 3,794 set by Janelle Torres from EAON RECORD FALL Freshman arah Kwasigroch has placed her name in the season record book for assists and assists per game. he averaged assists per game, placing her sixth. Kwasigroch dished out 1,088 assists in her first year as a Lobo, the fifth best production in one season in the program s history. enior Chelsea ondrup and junior Kelly Therkelsen are all over the blocking records. ondrup surpassed her own record of 131, set in 2002, to set a new program best with 139. Therkelsen is right on her heels with 120, which leaves her third. ondrup set a new season record for total blocks with 152. THERKELEN EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DITRICT HONOR Junior Kelly Therkelsen has been named to the EPN The Magazine Academic All- District VI volleyball team,as selected by the College ports Information Directors of America (CoIDA). Therkelsen, who garnered third team honors last year, had the highest GPA is the district, posting a 4.15 as a Political cience and Economics major. Therkelsen has guided the Lobos to their best record (13-11) under head coach Kelley McKee and the program s best record since he ranks seventh in the MWC in blocks per game and tied for the ninth most blocks in a single match with 10 vs. Wyoming on Oct. 20. Therkelsen broke into the all-time Block Assists record at UNM this year with 238, needs just 15 to take over second. he is also 10th all-time in total blocks with 244. Therkelsen is currently fourth on the season list for most blocks assists with 108. he needs just two more total blocks for 10th on the season list. In order to be nominated for the CoIDA All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore in athletic and academic standing, have at least a 3.20 GPA and be a starter or important reserve on the team. Once nominated, a vote is taken by members of CoIDA to determine who is named to the team. LOBO PROWL ATOP THE MOUNTAIN WET CONFERENCE New Mexico, finishing seventh in the Mountain West Conference regular season, ranks in the top two-thirds of the conference in four of the eight statistical categories kept track of by the MWC. The Lobos are second in service aces (1.85 per game). They are fourth in blocks (2.68) and opponent hitting percentage (.200 avg.). UNM tied for the fifth best overall win percentage (.500 avg.). What s most impressive is that UNM has achieved success despite being picked to finish eighth in the MWC Preseason Poll. Individually, three different Lobos place on the conference s top-10 leaderboard. enior Chelsea ondrup on the list twice, placing third in blocks, averaging 1.39 per game and eighth in hitting percentage with a.289 avg. Freshman arah Kwasigroch stands sixth in assists, averaging per game and Therkelsen is ninth in blocks per game (1.13). As a team, the Lobos hold the best hitting percentage for an individual game in the MWC, hitting.452 against Delaware tate. They posted the fourth most aces of any team in the conference with 16 against Air Force on Nov. 11. The Lobos tied for the sixth most blocks in a game, registering 19 vs. Wyoming on Oct. 20, and the 10th most blocks on ept. 16 with 18.5 vs. Oral Roberts. ondrup is tied for the most blocks in a game with 12 against Oral Roberts and 12 against Utah on ept. 24. enior Nicole Ryan is fifth for most attempts in a game with 66 at TCU and tied for sixth in most kills in a game with 24 at TCU. ondrup recorded the seventh best attack percentage in a game this year, hitting.650 against an Diego tate at home and recorded the seventh most blocks with 11 vs. Wyoming. ondrup and junior Kelly Therkelsen tied for the ninth most blocks with 10 against Montana and Wyoming, respectively. ATTENDANCE PIKE The Lobos brought in a total of 9,056 fans over 15 home matches in 2005, the highest under head coach Kelley McKee and the most since the team played in The Pit. They averaged 604 per match, also a record for McKee s team. The last team to draw better than these numbers was the 1998 team, with a season total of 10,193 for a 784 per match average. TEAM TOP CHART New Mexico topped its block assist season record, posting 499 in The previous record was 480, set in Head coach Kelley McKee was also the coach of the team who produced the third best total, 462 in The Lobos served up 202 aces this year, the third most in the program s 30-year history. The last time a team moved onto this chart was in 1994, when they posted 194. The top two spots belong to the 1980 and 1981 teams, which recorded 215 and 292, respectively. RYAN, ONDRUP AND THERKELEN MAKE TWO TRAIGHT ALL-TOURNEY TEAM enior Chelsea ondrup and junior Kelly Therkelsen made their second straight alltournament team at the Hilton Albuquerque Classic. ondrup was named the Hilton s Most Valuable Player. ondrup had a team-high 38 kills and 21 blocks, averaging a team-best.382 hitting percentage. Her 12 block assists against Oral Roberts was the second-most stuffed back in one match. The record (14) is also held by ondrup.therkelsen put down 34 kills with five assists, nine aces, 16 digs and 15 total blocks while hitting.225. LOBO IGN THREE TO NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT In the midst of the most successful season under head coach Kelley McKee, Lobo Volleyball announced the signing of three talented student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Lobos in 2006 will be Jade Michaelsen (Tucson, Ariz.), Rose Morris (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Allison uiter (Littleton, Colo.). This program has grown and developed in immeasurable ways over the past four seasons, said head coach Kelley McKee. We have a strong core group of young women who have helped us take Lobo Volleyball to new heights. We are so excited to add three special student-athletes who will continue to help us take Lobo Volleyball to new levels in the Mountain West Conference. A setter for the alpointe Catholic Lancers and head coach Amy Johnson, Michaelsen led her team to three consecutive outhern Arizona Regional Championships from he helped her team to the first round of the Arizona tate Championships in 2003, the Arizona tate Quarterfinals in 2004 and the Arizona tate Quarterfinals again in Michaelsen garnered 2003 second team outhern Arizona honors as well as 2004 outhern Arizona Player of the Year, second team All-tate in 2004 and first team outhern Arizona in he is the career record holder for assists at alpointe. A member of Club Cactus Juniors, Jade is a Prepvolleyball.com enior Aces Top 250 election and is coached by teve Walker. Off the court, Michaelsen is a three-time member of the Academic Honor Roll, volunteers for the Humane ociety, has participated in the Kairos Retreat and is a Days of Recollection Attendant. Jade will bring much needed depth and balance to the setting position within our program. Although she is young in the setting position, she brings great size, sweet hands, and a passionate commitment to grow within the game. Jade s size will add another dimension to our team with her ability to attack and block at the net. Jade brings intangibles to our team that will help Lobo volleyball excel. tarting as a outside hitter for the andia Matadors, Morris received First Team All- District honors in 2002 and was named the 2002 andia High chool Defensive Player of the Year. Her accolades include being named to the 2003 and 2004 All-District teams, All- Metro honors in 2004 and All-tate in Morris has been enrolled in gifted and advanced placement classes over the course of her academic career at andia and earned an academic letter for Future Problem olving. Rose has the makings of a great outside hitter: her size and power give her a great ability to terminate at the net. We have high expectations for Rose and are looking forward to helping her develop and mature within our program. Rose has the natural ability and the determination to be a dominant force on the outside for us and we know that she will have an immediate impact on our program. Playing middle blocker for the Chatfield Chargers and head coach Tom Pazko, uiter helped her team to a secnd place League finish in 2004 and a first place League finish in A dominant force in the middle, she led the Chargers in blocks from and notched a career-best 10 blocks against Air Academy in uiter was named econd Team All-Conference in he is also a member of the Front Range Volleyball Club. uiter ranks No. 1 in her class, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. he is a member of the National Honor ociety, Leadership Team, and Honor Roll. Allie is an outstanding athlete with a special ability to play high above the net. The great standards she sets for herself are evident both on the court and in the classroom. When Allie brings her high standards and exceptional work ethic to Lobo Volleyball, we will surely be a better team as a result. Her experience with the Front Range Volleyball Club has and will provide her with comprehensive training in preparation for the next level. Allie has a bright future within the sport and we are looking forward to her arrival. We re expecting great collegiate academic and athletic careers from Jade, Rose, and Allie. They are a tremendous complement to the foundation we have built and these are three young women who exemplify the standards of Lobo Volleyball. As a program, we took a huge step forward when Jade, Rose, and Allie made the decisions to become Lobos. MWC CHAMPIONHIP RECAP The seventh seeded New Mexico volleyball team fell to No. 2 Colorado tate, 3-0 in the second Quarterfinals match of the Mountain West Conference Championships at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. CU, the conference tournament s two-time defending champions, won 30-18, 31-29, The Lobos got off to a slow start in game one and the Rams took advantage of it, building an eight-point lead on a 9-1 run. enior Nicole Ryan pulled UNM back to within five at

5 13-8, putting down two consecutive kills after forcing three CU attack errors. Colorado tate regrouped, putting together a 4-0 run that was ended by senior Chelsea ondrup, who slammed down a kill in the wide open center court. The Lobos hung with CU and were trailing by six at when the Rams went on a 7-1 run to end the game at ondrup hit.500 in game one with three kills and one error on four attempts. ondrup opened game two with two straight kills for New Mexico s first lead of the match. The teams traded points until the Rams broke a 6-6 tie with a 6-2 run that was ended by Ryan s kill to make it Three straight kills from ondrup rattled the CU defense as the Lobos trailed by just one point at The Rams committed two errors, handing UNM a lead. Two more CU errors with kills from sophomores Kim Cox and amie Weber gave the Lobos their biggest lead of the match at But it wasn t enough as the Rams rebounded to tie the game at 29 all before winning ondrup hit.636 in game two, connecting nine kills on 10 attempts with two errors. Cox had three kills, hitting.500 (3K-0E-6TA). Junior Kelly Therkelsen opened game three with an ace to get the Lobos on the board first. Ryan put the ball down for UNM s third point of the match to keep them within one at 4-3. CU turned it up a notch, outscoring New Mexico to clinch the match with a win. ondrup hit.400 in game three (2K-0E-5TA) while Therkelsen and Ryan chipped in with a kill apiece. ondrup led New Mexico with a match-high 14 kills, hitting.550 (14K-3E-20TA). ondrup and Therkelsen both recorded three blocks. Cox set a personal best with three kills, hitting.286 (3K-1E-7TA). Ryan added five kills and five digs while Therkelsen posted four kills. Freshman Tanna Taylor dished out a team-high 26 assists while Weber topped the team in digs with six. Freshman Gayle Tripp added five digs. Colorado tate s Casey Bauer and Tonya Mokelki each recorded 10 kills to lead the Rams. Ashley Fornstrom led the team in assists (36) and Katherine Whitney had a teamhigh 17 digs.
