4 NEW MEXICO The 2007 season marks the eighth straight season of Lobo volleyball in the Johnson Center. A highlight this year, The mtn. will televise the Sept. 28 match against TCU. The Lobo faithful have piled into Johnson, rooting for the program from its inception until 1996, when they upgraded to University Arena. From 1996 to 1999, the Lobos averaged 1,026 people per game. During the first five full seasons back in Johnson, the Lobos averaged 430 people. In 2005, those numbers skyrocketed, increasing season attendance by over 2,220 to its greatest since the days in University Arena. The highlight of the 2006 season was on Senior Night, Nov. 10th. The Lobos defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 3-0, during the first Lobo volleyball match to ever be televised from Johnson Center. In the Johnson Center, the Lobos have exclusive access to the Lobo Team Room. This room features work areas and computers to study, a leather couch for a little relaxation and numerous awards and plaques that decorated the walls to remind the team of its successful past. Outside the team room, UNM s four All- Americas are honors as their jerseys are showcased. Across the hall is the Lobo Alumni Wall, which features autographs from former players. 4

6 NEW MEXICO Lobo League is a volleyball league operated by the Women s Volleyball program at the University of New Mexico. The first Lobo League season was in the spring of 1988 and had 24 teams. It has since grown to nearly 200 teams in eight coed divisions, seven women s divisions and five men s divisions, making it the third largest league in North America. Matches are only played on Saturday and Sunday nights with match times of 5:30, 6:40, 7:50 and 9:00 p.m. All matches are played in the Johnson Center at the University of New Mexico. The Johnson Center has 13 courts in three gyms. The league is open to anyone in Albuquerque and the surrounding area. Lobo League runs in the fall, spring and summer. The fall and spring seasons are the largest with approximately teams; the summer season usually has approximately 50 teams. During the fall and spring seasons, teams play 10 regular season matches with a post-season tournament. The summer season is a bit shorter with teams playing 8 regular season matches and no post-season tournament. Play is three games to 30 with rally scoring. Tournament play is best two-out-of-three games with rally scoring to 20. Lobo League was started for two reasons: to encourage volleyball players in the Albuquerque area to attend the UNM Women s Volleyball matches, and to provide a fundraiser for the UNM Women s Volleyball team. In both regards, Lobo League has been a huge success. Over the past 11 years UNM has been among the top teams in the nation in attendance. This year s Lobo League Appreciation Night will be Thursday, Sept. 20 vs. Air Force at 7 p.m. Free tickets will be passed out during league play and a pizza party will start at 6 p.m. For more information, check out the official website at or contact Lobo League Director Dave Buchholz by phone at or by at vbleague@unm.edu. DAVE BUCHHOLZ Lobo League Director Dave Buchholz is in his sixth year as director of the Lobo League, one of the largest recreational volleyball programs in the country. Buchholz came to UNM from Tempe, Ariz., where he spent almost eight years as general manager of a family fun park. In his spare time, he officiated city and school league basketball, volleyball and softball. Buchholz went to Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wis. for two years. He earned an associate s degree and was on the soccer and basketball teams. In 1988, he graduated from Unity College in Maine with a bachelor s degree in Outdoor Recreation. In addition to being valedictorian, he was a member of the basketball and cross country teams. Buchholz earned his master s degree in Recreation Administration from Arizona State University in While there, he was a graduate assistant in the Recreational Sports & Student Activities Department. Buchholz married Anita Obermeier, a professor in the English Department at UNM. The couple has two daughters, Isabella and Sophia. When not in the office, Buchholz enjoys surfing, running, playing golf and watching movies. 6

The site includes results, schedules, Gametracker with live in-game stats, live audio and video, news releases, game notes, features, history of the program, player and coach biographies, and much, much more. Game Day on GoLobos.com is the online destination for New Mexico Volleyball gamedays if you cannot make it out to the Johnson Center. For each game during the 2007 season, GoLobos.com will feature Gametracker with live in-game stats and, for the first time ever, stream live audio and video. Gametracker (Live Stats) A live statistical play-by-play account of every home game and most road games is available via Gametracker at GoLobos.com. To access, go to the upcoming events box on the front page of GoLobos.com, and click on live stats for the desired game. Mountain West Online Coverage The Mountain West Conference continues to provide balanced coverage of its members volleyball programs on their official website, The MWC offers conference stats, standings, match previews as well as links to live in-game stats. For the conference tournament, the MWC also streams live video coverage. LOBO VOLLEYBALL ON CSTV AND THE mtn. After two regular season Mountain West Conference games and the entire MWC Championship were televised by CSTV is 2005, the conference partnered with CSTV in 2006 to create its own network, The mtn. Thanks to this collaboration, even more MWC games will be televised or streamed online. As the first conference to launch its own television network, the Mountain West Conference has always felt there would be other such networks to follow. A dedicated network is a tremendous concept that captures the real value of local programming and caters to the passionate fan bases that support collegiate institutions and their athletics programs. One of the primary reasons the MWC embarked on this partnership with CSTV was the shared vision of The mtn. The mtn. is a multi-platform superregional network that will be distributed via both cable and satellite vehicles. Programming is offered in a wide variety of forms, including linear television, customized institutional programming, broadband streaming, video-on-demand, mobile/wireless and others. The goal is to provide fans what they want to see, when they want to see it and where they want to see it. The mtn., in conjunction with the MWC national platform on CSTV, will showcase more Mountain West events than at any other time in our history. 9

10 NEW MEXICO 10 With over 170 accredited disciplines to choose from, the University of New Mexico offers something for everyone in a unique learning environment. UNM s programs in Latin American studies, laser optics, environmental studies, photography, and lithography have all earned international acclaim. Graduate programs in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, and fine arts are also available. UNM offers several degree programs, most requiring four years for completion, that are offered nowhere else in New Mexico. These include computer engineering, dental hygiene, physical therapy, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, and dance. The University College is the first academic home for all freshmen and many transfer students. Freshmen must complete 26 hours of credit with UC before transferring to the college of their major area of study. This allows students an opportunity to adjust to college life and take a variety of courses before having to decide what degree to pursue. After completing approximately one year of college, students may begin fine tuning their academic interests in one of the following programs: the School of Architecture and Planning, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, School of Management, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, Division of Dental Programs, or School of Medicine. If no single college or program offers what a student needs, he or she may elect to remain in University College and design an individualized Bachelor of University Studies degree. A few options are visits to elementary and middle schools or participating in the Read with the Lobos program.
