2 hoosier atmosphere The IU VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE A packed University Gym is no doubt one of the most fun atmospheres in the Big Ten. Fans are on top of the action standing just feet away from the court, and that s not including the Red Zone seating where the court is literally inches from the spectators feet. Throw in the fact that nearly all the crowd noise is retained by a low-lying metal roof and U-Gym becomes a very raucous place Friday and Saturday evenings during the fall semester. And don t forget the opportunity to play inside the venerable Assembly Hall as well. This year will mark the third consecutive in which the volleyball team will kick-start the Hoosier Hysteria festivities in October. In 2007, a school-record crowd of 11,086 people witnessed the volleyball match against Michigan State at Hoosier Hysteria, the fourth largest volleyball crowd in the country that season. 9

3 strength & athletic Training adam clemens Clemens is in his 10th season as an athletic trainer at Indiana University and his fourth with the volleyball program. He also currently works with the Hoosier baseball team. Clemens travels full-time with the team. athletic training staff A sports medicine staff of 12 full-time athletic trainers, a team physician, a nurse practitioner and numerous graduate assistant athletic trainers and athletic training students assist each other in providing the best health care of Indiana University studentathletes. sports medicine The Indiana University Athletic Training Rooms are fully equipped to provide the student-athletes with the best medical care possible. Indiana University student-athletes work with team physicians and certified athletic trainers in receiving treatments such as therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, aquatic therapy and custom made braces and orthotics. The sports medicine staff also includes various consultants in a variety of specialties. strength & conditioning staff A staff of six full-time coaches assist and monitor weight training programs specialized for IU Volleyball. Student-athletes are evaluated on body composition and their gait analysis using a research lab. HUMAn performance lab Indiana University is one of the few schools in the nation with a human performance lab on campus providing Olympicstyle testing of athletes in all sports. Josh Edison Eidson is in his seventh year as a strength and conditioning coach at Indiana University. In addition to working with volleyball, he also assists with the Hoosier football program. 10

5 hanging with the hoosiers THE HOOSIER FAMILY When you come to Indiana, you don t just play volleyball... you become a part of the Hoosier Family. Between team retreats, community service functions, banquets, summer camps or a night hanging out with friends; there are plenty of bonding opportunities for Hoosier Volleyball players and staff to become a true family. 12

6 community service giving back The Hoosiers understand the importance of giving back to those in need. Indiana coaches and student-athletes are actively involved in the Bloomington community. The IU Volleyball program enjoys partaking in many community service activities including: volunteering at the Coach Hep Cancer Challenge, visiting local elementary schools, playing with children going through treatment at the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI) and taking pictures and signing autographs for Hoosier fans after matches. IU Volleyball has also teamed up with Girls Inc. of Monroe County to help inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold, as it s mission statement asserts. 7 The rivalry THE MONON SPIKE The Monon Spike was created in 1981 and has grown to be as important as football s Old Oaken Bucket in symbolizing the rivalry between Indiana and Purdue. A pair of Purdue players set out to create something that would not only represent the competition on the court but also showcase the rich tradition of the state of Indiana. They chose the Spike from the Monon Railroad, which originated in Indiana in the late 19th century. It was taken from a portion of track near Indianapolis, marking the halfway point between Bloomington and West Lafayette. Also, as is traditionally done with its sister trophy, the Old Oaken Bucket, an I or a P link is added to the chain annually to signify the victor of that season s showdown. The Monon Spike Match returns to Bloomington in 2009 when the Boilermakers make a visit to University Gym on Nov. 4. THE crimson and gold cup This season marks the sixth edition of the AT&T Crimson and Gold Cup, the title which signifies athletic supremacy between the rival schools. It pits the 20 common sports sponsored by both institutions against each other, rewarding one point for each sport. Indiana owns a lead in the all-time series.
