The Bengals will take on Army on Friday before playing host UC Riverside and Robert Morris on Saturday. Friday s match is set to begin at 11 a.m., while Saturday s matches will open serve at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. About the Bengals Idaho State heads into the week with a 2-5 overall record. The team is 1-0 at home, 1-2 on the road, and 0-3 on a neutral site. The Bengals went 2-2 last week, defeating Montana-Western (3-0) and Fresno State (3-1) before dropping matches to Cal State Bakersfield (0-3) and UC Davis (1-3). Freshman Charlee Kinghorn leads the Bengal attack with 74 kills (3.22 per game) this season. Christine Van Orden fronts the Bengal offense with 197 assists (8.95 per game). We will continue to work hard and improve. This weekend will be a good gage on how far we have come and give us some final insight heading into Big Sky play. Winning again on the road would raise our confidence for the Big Sky the folloing week. On last week s matches: The Bengals started the week off strong.the home match versus Montana-Western had a fun and supppportive home crowd that helped jump start the Bengals offense to perform at a high level. The road win at Fresno State as a great confidence boost for our young Bengal squad. We played in an 11,000 seat arena in front of a large aggresive fanbase and rose to the occassion. We are definitely disappointed with our results later in the week. We struggled passing in a poorly lit gym, and were inconsistent with our team defense. 4 About Army Army enters Friday s match against Idaho State with a perfect 7-0 record. The team went 4-0 last week, defeating NJIT, Air Force, Quinnipiac, and Rutgers. The team has already defeated Marist this week. Army has dropped only one game in seven matches. The 7-0 start matches the team s 2006 start. The team went 21-8 last season and placed second in the Patriot League. Rachael Breinling fronts the team with 73 kills, while Elizabeth Lazzari leads the team with 77 digs. Army averages 15.8 kills per game while limiting opponents to just an 8.8 average. The team holds a.291 attack percentage. About UC Riverside The Highlanders head into this week s matches with a 1-3 record after competing at the Colorado State Tournament in Greeley last week. The team has a win over Saint Francis, and losses to Florida Gulf Coast, Northern Colorado, and Iowa. The team is led by sophomore outside hitter Dominique Cowling and her 3.36 kills per game average. Senior Angie Mitchell is hitting.351 this season and is the co-leader in blocks with 14. The team is led by senior Emily Wolthuis, who has a team-best 87 kills (4.35 per game). Junior Alaina Gibson fronts the defensive effort with 123 digs, while freshman Amanda Graham helps the block effort with 16. Robert Morris averages 15.5 kills per game while connecting on a.234 hitting mark. The team is a member of the Northeast Conference. Young and the Restless The Bengals have just one senior this season in Katie Edgson. The team consists of three juniors, five sophomores, and four freshmen, all of whom have seen court time. The Bengals have played six of their seven matches away from Pocatello. ISU has already logged more than 3,300 miles this season. Bengals Ranked Seventh in Big Sky Preseason Poll The Idaho State volleyball team has been picked to finish seventh this season, according to the 2007 preseason coaches poll. Idaho State received 22 points to earn the seventh spot. The Bengals were followed by Northern Colorado, which received 19 points for the eighth position. Montana State was selected ninth with 17 points. The league s coaches selected Sacramento State as the favorite to win the Big Sky. The Hornets received eight first place votes for a total of 64 points. Portland State finished second in the voting with 53 points, while Montana earned the third spot with 48 points. Weber State was picked to finish fourth with 36 points. Eastern Washington edged out Northern Arizona by one point for fifth place, followed by Idaho State in seventh.

5 Oregon 3, Idaho State 0 (7-30, 19-30, 13-30) Playing in her home state, Emily Waldron registered a team-high 13 digs with four kills, but it wasn t enough as Idaho State dropped its season-opener, a 3-0 (7-30, 19-30, 13-30) loss to Pac-10 foe Oregon Aug. 24 at McArthur Court. Freshman Charlee Kinghorn led the Bengals with five kills on 21 attacks with only two errors. The Lewisville, Idaho native also picked up eight digs and a pair of blocks in the effort. Returning starter Christine Van Orden led the Bengal offense with 13 assists. The second-year setter also registered six digs and three kills. Defensively, Jessica Gurney led Idaho State with five blocks on the night while Katie Edgson helped with six digs. Idaho State notched eight team blocks on the night compared to Oregon s five. The Ducks tallied 60 kills to ISU s 17. Kansas 3, Idaho State 0 (20-30, 21-30, 25-30) Idaho State dropped both of its matches Saturday at the Oregon Kick-Off Classic, falling 3-0 (20-30, 21-30, 25-30) to Kansas before dropping a 3-0 (28-30, 27-30, 22-30) decision to Cal State Bakersfield. The Bengals now return to Pocatello to host Montana-Western in the home opener on Tuesday. Against Kansas, ISU s Jessica Gurney notched a team-high seven kills, while Emily Waldron and Charlee Kinghorn each registered six. Christine Van Orden set up the offense with a team-high 16 assists. Katie Edgson and Blakely Peppinger led the defensive effort with five digs each. CS Bakersfield 3, Idaho State 0 (28-30, 27-30, 22-30) Idaho State enjoyed its best offensive effort of the season in the loss to Cal State Bakersfield, recording 37 kills with a.196 hitting mark. The Bengals kept it close in a match that included 15 ties and six lead changes. Waldron knocked down a match-high 16 kills on 31 attacks with only one error for an impressive.484 hitting percentage against Cal State Bakersfield. She also registered three digs, a service ace and an assist. Van Orden led ISU with 24 assists and was just one dig shy of a double-double. Edgson led the team with a season-high 16 digs. Kinghorn added seven kills against the Roadrunners, while Gurney, Van Orden, and Britta Bartschi each added four. Idaho State 3, Montana-Western 0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-25) Charlee Kinghorn notched 17 kills and Emily Waldron added 12 as Idaho State shutout Montana-Western 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-25) in its home opener at Reed Gym on Aug. 28. With the win, Idaho State improved to 1-3 on the season while Montana-Western fekk to 0-5. The Bengals were connecting on all sides of the net, connecting on a.500 hitting mark with 42 kills with only six errors on 72 attacks after the first two games of the match. The team finished the match with a.412 hitting percentage--the seventh-best team hitting percentage ever in a single match. The last time the Bengals connected on a.400 hitting mark or better dates back to the 1999 season when the team connected on a.400 mark against Portland State Kinghorn tallied her match-high 17 kills on 34 attacks with just three errors. The freshman outside hitter recorded a.412 attack mark. Waldron was just as impressive at the net, recording 12 kills on 27 attacks with only one error for a.407 mark. Ashlyn McDowell registered eight kills, while Sarah Carson and Christine Van Orden each collected five. Van Orden set up the offense with a match-high 28 assists. Blakely Peppinger helped with 18 assists. Defensively, Waldron led the team with 11 digs and Katie Edgson reached double digits with 10. Kirby Myers led Montana-Western at the net with a team-high seven kills, while teammate Lindsey Nicholls added six. MATCH RECAPS Fresno State 3, Idaho State 1 (30-28, 23-30, 30-28, 30-24) Emily Waldron and Christine Van Orden each recorded double-doubles as Idaho State picked up its first road win of the season, defeating Fresno State 3-1 (30-28, 23-30, 30-28, 30-24) Aug. 30 at the Save Mart Center. The win pushed Idaho State s record to 2-3 while Fresno State dropped to 0-4. Waldron notched her double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs. The sophomore outside hitter tallied 55 attacks and committed just four errors for a.182 hitting mark. Van Orden led the Bengals with a match-high 43 assists with 14 digs for her first double-double of the year. Freshman Charlee Kinghorn led Idaho State at the net with 15 kills while teammate Jessica Gurney also reached double digits kills with 13. Kolay Mickelsen helped with nine kills and Sarah Carson added six. Defensively, Katie Edgson led the Bengals with a match-high 27 digs and Jenna Proost also reached double digits with 13 digs. Proost and Blakely Peppinger each notched three service aces on the night. As a team, Idaho State recorded a.237 attack percentage, connecting on 63 kills with 16 errors. The team registered seven team blocks. CS Bakersfield 3, Idaho State 0 (22-30, 17-30, 28-30) Despite an 11-kill night from freshman Charlee Kinghorn and a doubledouble effort from Christine Van Orden, Idaho State dropped a 3-0 (22-30, 17-30, 28-30) decision to Cal State Bakersfield Aug. 31 at the Icardo Center. With the loss, Idaho State fell to 2-4 on the season while CSUB upped its record to 3-2. The Bengals did keep the third game of the match close, taking a late lead. CSUB battled back to sneak away with the game, going on a 7-2 run to secure the game and the match. Kinghorn recorded her team-high 11 kills on 35 attacks and six errors. The first-year outside hitter connected on a.143 hitting mark. Katie Edgson had six kills on the night while Sarah Carson tallied five and Jessica Gurney four. ISU kills leader Emily Waldron was without a kill in Friday night s match. Van Orden notched her second-straight double-double with 25 assists and 16 digs. On the defensive side of the net, Gurney fronted the Bengals with four kills. The Bengals managed just a.068 hitting percentage compared to CSUB s.287 mark. The Roadrunners also won the team block battle 8-6. UC Davis 3, Idaho State 1 (23-30, 23-30, 30-22, 22-30) Despite a season-high 17 kills from Jessica Gurney and a double-double effort from Christine Van Orden, Idaho State droped a 3-1 (23-30, 23-30, 30-22, 22-30) decision to UC Davis Sept. 1 at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. With the loss, Idaho State dropped to 2-5 on the season. UC Davis picked up its first win of the season, improving to 1-4 overall. After dropping the first two games of the match, Idaho State battled back in game three to take a win. The momentum carried over to the first half of game four as ISU took a lead, but it didn t last as UC Davis got the win to secure the match. Gurney led the Bengals with a team-high 17 kills on 27 attacks with only three errors. Gurney connected on a.519 hitting mark on the night. Charlee Kinghorn also notched double digit kills with 12. Katie Edgson, Sarah Carson, and Van Orden each rounded out the offense at the net with seven kills each. Van Orden recorded her third-straight double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs. Edgson led the team in digs with 16 and Emily Waldon added 15.
