3 INTRODUCTION Welcome to the $10 Queenstown Challenge for Cure Kids 2017! Congratulations on making it this far, and being here in Auckland at the start line - we appreciate how hard you have already worked in fundraising to get to this point. We know that these next few days will be an experience like no other! We have worked hard to put together an event that we hope will be a challenge; that will give you the opportunity to try something new, to put yourself on the line, have a lot of FUN and to be part of a group of incredible people who are making a huge difference in the lives of children all over New Zealand who live with a serious illnesses and conditions. When the going gets tough as you head South this week, we encourage you to remember why you re doing this, and to think of the challenges that our ambassadors go through every day. On Saturday, as you cross the finish-line, the event will be finished - and you will be rewarded with a hot shower and a good meal; oh and you ll be in glorious QUEENSTOWN! But for so many of our Kiwi kids, the difficulties don t end so nicely on a Saturday afternoon. So if you re standing in the cold wind, on a long day, with cars tooting but never stopping, make sure you stop and remember the kids you are representing In this pack, we have included the following things: Important contact details Explanation on challenge communication and the event HQ The Challenge Rules and Health & Safety guidelines Information on challenges and the points system Please make sure you take time to familiarise yourself with these, and keep this book with you for reference while on the road! 2
4 COMMUNICATION The HQ team will lay down the rules for your safety and well being on the road, monitoring your comings and going as you hitch rides; it is vital that as soon as you catch a ride you follow the protocol. Throughout the event, you ll be sending all social media and digital related challenges to HQ via text. Alex will be tallying your points everyday. Each participant has registered their cell-phone number with Cure Kids in advance of the event. HQ have these numbers on file, and will text you on these numbers as a first point of contact. If they text you to seek your location, YOU MUST TEXT BACK. If HQ haven t heard from you in a while, they will text or call to check your whereabouts. Please make sure you have your phone on you, with the volume on, at all times. Whatever you do, don t leave it on the dashboard of your last ride!! PLEASE only call the Emergency line in the event of a safety concern, as it is important this line is kept clear. CHALLENGE RULES / HEALTH & SAFETY GUIDELINES Commit these to memory; they re for YOUR safety! The following Challenge Rules and Health & Safety guidelines are designed to ensure participants enjoy a safe, fair and positive experience throughout the event. As event organisers we accept a responsibility of care for your health and safety. A comprehensive Health & Safety Plan has been developed for the event in consultation with NZ Police, NZTA and relevant other agencies and challenge suppliers. However, we cannot hold your hand at all times - nor, we believe, would you wish us to do so. The nature of this event encourages resourcefulness and self-sufficiency and participants should be aware that their collective team resources are the first line of assistance in any emergency or incident. We encourage teams competitive spirit but not at any cost. The adrenaline produced by a competitive environment should not be allowed to compromise sound judgment and commonsense at any time. Please take the time to thoroughly review and fully 3
