1 Event Day Guide THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE CHALLENGE AND HELPING CREATE MORE TOMORROWS FOR MANITOBANS LIVING WITH CANCER YOU challenged YOURSELF to change a life. YOU are helping improve outcomes for cancer patients today and in the future. YOU have trained and made healthier lifestyle choices to reduce your personal risk of cancer. YOU raised serious dollars for a serious cause that touches us all. Now it s time to WALK IT or WORK IT because YOU can! Lace up your shoes, Challenge day is almost here! PHOTO: 2017 Challenge for Life participants Over the past few months, you have trained, made healthier lifestyle choices to reduce your own risk of cancer, and raised money for a cause that touches us all because you can. We LOVE hearing how YOU have committed to improving your personal fitness. Your passion to be a change-maker is infectious. We have been inspired by your reasons for participating and we are so incredibly proud of your efforts. Congratulations to all of you who rose to the Challenge! Raising $500 or more is a tremendous achievement. Your efforts help ensure CancerCare Manitoba can continue to provide world-class research, treatment, patient care and support for all Manitobans and their families touched by cancer. THANK YOU so much! We look forward to seeing you at Assiniboine Park this Saturday, June 9. Together we are taking steps on a journey that is changing lives because WE can! Page 1 of 9
2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR PATERSON GLOBALFOODS We are very proud to be a sponsor of this event since its inception 11 years ago. 3 EVENT DAY TIPS KEEP HYDRATED Hydration regulates body temperature, heart rate and is essential to your energy level and performance. PREVENTING BLISTERS Blisters are caused by friction, heat and sweating so before putting on your socks: Reduce friction by lubricating the skin with petroleum jelly or Body Glide, or Minimize moisture on the feet by using drying agents like foot powder or cornstarch. PREVENTING INJURY Stretching your muscles will add flexibility, can help prevent injury during the day, and keep post-event muscle aches to a minimum. Fitness leaders will be at opening ceremonies to offer warm-up exercises and post-event stretching. Slowing down near the end of your walk or workout will help your body adjust to the reduction in effort, and aid in reducing muscle soreness. Once you reach the finish line, take advantage of instructor led 5-minute stretching sessions taking place in the Work IT tent beginning at 1PM - followed by a little tender-loving-care with one of our massage therapists. EAT BEFORE AND AFTER Your body needs fuel to keep your metabolism strong all the time. Visit our dining tent for a protein and carbohydrate breakfast. You will burn this slowly as you exercise. Don t workout on an empty stomach. Grab more snacks (fuel) at the check stops. Afterward, refuel quickly with a delicious lunch in our dining tent. FEELING FATIGUED Walk it out to gradually slow your heart rate. Don t stop or sit down immediately following a heavy workout. FOR YOUR SAFETY PLEASE READ Your safety is our number one priority. To keep everyone safe during our event, we ask that all participants follow these rules. 1. OBEY TRAFFIC LAWS: Look both ways before crossing any street. At controlled intersections, it is wise to cross only when you have the pedestrian crossing light. We have a wonderful volunteer Moto Crew on motorcycles en route helping to direct participants and keep you safe at street crossings. 2. NO RUNNING PLEASE: This is a walking event and we want to make it safe and enjoyable for all participants. 3. NO IN-LINE SKATES, SKATEBOARDS, BICYCLES OR ANIMALS: For the comfort and safety of yourself and other participants. 4. STROLLERS: Strollers and wagons are allowed but please be courteous to your fellow participants. 5. CELL PHONES: Talking on a cell phone while you walk or workout is dangerous for yourself and your fellow Challengers. You are distracted and less likely to recognize traffic danger or tripping hazards. If you need to make a phone call, please step off to the side of the sidewalk. 6. HEADPHONES: There are several reasons why you shouldn't wear headphones while participating. The music may block noise from oncoming cars, cyclists and other participants. You'll also miss out on a lot of the excitement and entertainment en route! Page 3 of 9
4 7. UMBRELLAS: Although this is a rain or shine event, we advise you to dress properly for the weather conditions and leave your umbrella at home. Umbrellas are a hazard to you and to other walkers. 8. HOLD GARBAGE UNTIL NEXT CHECK STOP: Please respect the environment by holding onto garbage acquired on the walk until you reach a garbage can along the route or at the next check stop. 9. SWEEP VEHICLES: There will be four passenger vans travelling the route continuously to assist participants when necessary. If at any point you feel you need a ride to the next check stop, or to the finish line, extend your arm with a THUMBS DOWN motion. This will alert the vehicle to stop and assist you. 10. HAVE A SEAT: Not sure if you can complete the full 200 non-continuous minute workout? No worries! There will be plenty of chairs available. 11. EVENT DAY PARKING: Parking at Assiniboine Park is extremely limited. We recommend you get dropped off for the event. WHAT TO BRING Proper equipment can make all the difference to your experience as this is a rain or shine event! We have put together a list of recommended items. Most importantly, check the weather and use common sense. CLOTHING Select snug-fitting (but not tight) clothing. Clothes that are too tight or too loose can create friction and chafing. Do not wear untested or unwashed new clothing. Did you know 80 per cent of UV rays pass through clouds on a cloudy day? Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen, shine or cloud! Bring a sweater and/or nylon windbreaker with you in case of cool temperatures. FOOTWEAR SOCKS AVOID COTTON as it causes blisters. Choose socks made from synthetic, soft wet-wick fabric. Some people choose to wear two layers of socks (or a sock that is made with double layers) to aid in blister prevention. Carry a spare pair of socks and change during your walk if your feet become sweaty or wet. SHOES Don t wear new shoes. Your shoes must fit properly to avoid blisters. Too snug or too loose is always a problem. Ensure that there is a half-inch space between your longest toe and the end of your shoe. Be sure that you have enough room to wiggle your toes inside the toe box, and your heel does not slip when you walk. Choose shoes that breathe well and inspect the inside of your shoes for seams or worn areas that might produce extra friction. PERSONAL ITEMS HELP SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT, BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE Water stations will be available prior to the event at Assiniboine Park, as well as at each check stop to keep you hydrated. Wearing a waist pack to carry your water bottle and personal items like money and keys will make your walk more enjoyable. Additional items like a camera, sunscreen, lip balm, extra socks, pain reliever and anti-blister aids can also be carried on you. Page 4 of 9
