Match background Incredibly, after 119 games in league competition, nothing separates Dundalk and Saint Patrick s Athletic, with 41 wins apiece since their first meeting way back on 9 December 1951 when the Saints won 5-2 in Dublin. The clubs had commenced battle the previous year when Dundalk won the Leinster Senior Cup final 2-1, in December While overall, the record is even, St. Pat s have enjoyed somewhat of an Indian Sign over the Lilywhites in recent years, winning 15 of the last 20 meetings in all competitions going back to November 1997, losing just twice. Having failed to even score a goal against the Saints since Tom McNulty netted in a 2-0 win at Oriel Park in November 1998, Ian Foster masterminded a first win at Richmond Park in 21 years last September. Matthew Tipton ended the 12-year wait for a goal with a first-half tap-in, and Ross Gaynor s powerful strike after the break ensured Dundalk maximum points at the Inchicore venue for the first time since Tony Cousins struck in April 89. In October 2009, Dundalk ended a run of nine successive defeats by St. Pat s with a 0-0 draw at Oriel Park. In the five subsequent meetings, in 2010, Dundalk recorded another scoreless draw and last September s 2-1 win, but fell to three defeats in between including two losses at Oriel Park. In total, from the last ten meetings, St. Pat s have taken 23 points from a possible 30, Dundalk netting just five. Dundalk come into the game on a four-match unbeaten run, following back-toback wins over Glentoran (1-0) and Galway United (3-2) and draws against Bohemians (0-0) and Glentoran (1-1). St. Pat s enter having lost their last two league games, at home to Bray Wanderers (2-3) and away to Shamrock Rovers (0-2), a win at Bray (2-0) in the Leinster Senior Cup in between splitting the sequence. Dundalk have performed better on the road so far, winning at Linfield (5-3) and Glentoran, though losing their only trip in the league at Shamrock Rovers (1-3). At home, they have beaten Galway, drawn with Linfield (1-1), Bohs and Glentoran, and lost to Shamrock Rovers (0-2) in the Leinster Senior Cup. In their opening three league games, Dundalk have been level at the break. This has been repeated in the Setanta Sports Cup with the Lilywhites on terms at the break in all four games. The only other competitive game this year was against Shamrock Rovers in the Leinster Senior Cup, when Rovers led 1-0 at half-time at

3 Oriel Park. St. Pat s have had a mixed bag, winning, drawing and losing at the break in their opening three league games. On second-half performances, Dundalk have had a mixed bag of their own, with late goals against Galway United giving them their only win of the season to date. Three second-half goals gave the Saints a comfortable opening-day win at Galway. However, since that, they have performed poorly after the break, shipping three late goals against Bray Wanderers in a 3-2 home defeat, while Shamrock Rovers also netted a late goal against Pete Mahon s men. St. Pat s have scored three of their five league goals within the first four minutes of the second half. Dundalk s top scorer after eight competitive games this year is Mark Quigley, with four goals. 4 Saint Patrick s Athletic Latest match, injury/disciplinary news Last Match: Friday 18 March: Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Saint Patrick s Athletic (Turner 11, Oman 81) Goals from Chris Turner and Ken Oman condemned Saint Patrick s Athletic to a second straight league defeat as they lost 2-0 to Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium last Friday night. Turner gave the Hoops an 11th-minute lead with a 25-yard drive, and they should have extended their advantage before the break but ex-sligo Rovers winger Gary McCabe saw his penalty pushed around the post by Gary Rogers. The home side, however, made sure of their win with nine minutes remaining when Billy Dennehy s corner was headed in by Oman. Injury/Disciplinary news St. Pat s manager Pete Mahon has no suspension worries. Miscellaneous Having lost just one of their opening ten league games last season, St. Pat s have already lost two in three this term, their defeat by Rovers quickly following a home loss to Bray Wanderers. Dundalk Last Match: Monday 21 March: Dundalk 1-1 Glentoran (Gaynor 80; Burrows 60 pen) Ross Gaynor scored a magnificent team goal on 80 minutes to shoot Dundalk into the semi-finals of the Setanta Sports Cup following a 2-1 aggregate victory over Glentoran, after the sides played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Oriel Park on Monday night. After a quiet opening half, the game burst into life when Glentoran were awarded two penalties in the space of six minutes before the hour-mark, Andrew Waterworth blazing the first one over the bar before Matthew Burrows, despite Peter Cherrie going the right way, drove the ball to the keeper s bottom left-hand corner with the second attempt. The Lilywhites responded well, though, and after Johnny Taylor was dismissed for quick-fire yellow cards, they restored their lead in the tie when Mark Quigley and Keith Ward combined to set Gaynor free, the 23-year-old finishing coolly under Elliott Morris. Injury/Disciplinary news For the trip to Inchicore, Dundalk manager Ian Foster welcomes back central defender Michael Hector following a three-match suspension, and the 18-year-old, who is currently on loan at Oriel Park from English Championship club Reading, is likely to replace Shane Guthrie, who is unavailable due to the terms of his loan agreement from St. Pat s. Leftback Eoghan Osborne (hamstring) will be hoping to recover to be available for the first time since the opening weekend of the league season at Shamrock Rovers. Central midfielder Dean Bennett is ruled out through a one-match suspension carried over from last season. Miscellaneous Osborne celebrates his 19th birthday on the day of the game, one of four Dundalk players to have their birthday in March.

16 Team facts Saint Patrick s Athletic Domestic club competition honours Saint Patrick s Athletic have won seven Premier Division titles since they were admitted into the League of Ireland in 1951, with the first of those coming in their maiden season in the league. Their last was in the 1998/99 season, in the same year as Dundalk were first relegated. The Saints, incidentally, have never been demoted from the top flight of Irish football. They have also won two FAI Cups, in 1959 and 1961, and two League Cups, in 2001 and Their last FAI Cup final appearance was in 2006 when they lost 4-3 to Derry City after extra time, after leading three times in the game, at the old Lansdowne Road. Their challenge eventually petered out, with just three wins in their final 12 league games seeing them finish fifth, as they missed out on Europe by five points. However, following the demise of Sporting Fingal in February, the Saints will take their place in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League. The Saints long wait for an FAI Cup triumph continued as they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by eventual runners-up Shamrock Rovers, Chris Turner scoring the winner in a replay at Richmond Park following an exciting 2-2 draw at Tallaght Stadium two days earlier. The Saints exited the League Cup at the quarter-finals, losing 4-1 in Sligo. They made it all the way to the decider in the Setanta Sports Cup, losing out to Bohemians in the final, incidentally to a header from Anto Murphy, who has since returned to Richmond Park for a third spell. In their other cup outing, they lost to Drogheda United at the first hurdle of the Leinster Senior Cup.
