3 CLUB NEWS... First of all this week on behalf of all the members of Bohemians we extend our sympathy to the wife and family of the late Billy Morton. While Athletics were of course his main sporting interest Billy had a soft spot for Soccer and for our Club in particular. May he rest in peace. We welcome Cork Celtic to Dalymount Park today for the first meeting of the clubs this season. Celtic, like ourselves, have not been getting the results they feel their play deserves. However the advent of the Cup usually sees the best of the Cork men so perhaps a change of fortune is around the corner. What of ourselves? We feel that we have the best coach in the Country, some of the best players and yet we find ourselves at the bottom of the League Table though anyone who saw our display during the season against Dundalk at Oriel Park in the Shield, against Finn Harps in the same competition, any of our four games against Waterford or against Athlone recently would surely agree that we are a long way f rom being the worst side in the League. In the recent game against Athlone we played first class football all through, scored two grand goals any yet found ourselves defeated by a side which on the day at any rate did not play as well as Bohemians. These remarks are not intended to cast any reflection on our opponents but to illustrate that any luck that is going seems to ignore us. We wish all our friends the very best for 1970 and we extend our special thanks to our advertisers both those who support this programme and those who have placed advertisements in the ground for their kindness which is much appreciated. 9 FROM THE MANAGERS PEN by Sean Thomas TONY O 'CONNELL The unique distinction of being the first professional to play for Bohemians belongs to Tony O 'Connell whose timely arrival at Dalymount Park towards the end of last season, helped in no uncertain fashion to make our last six League games successful. Born in Tralee in 1941, Tony started his career with Stella Maris; he played in the school boys team with Johnny Giles (Leeds United) and John Keogh. Most of this successful team was signed by Shamrock Rovers. In 1959 he played his first senior game for Shamrock Rovers against Drumcondra in Tolka Park and established himself as a winger who was to gain further honours in the shape of five Shield Medals, three F.A.I.Cup Medals, one League Medal, during his years at Milltown. In his final season at Milltown he won an Inter-League Cap in t he memorable game against England at Dalymount, October One always associates Tony' s display that night against Jimmy Armfield with the success gained by the League team. Anxious to try his luck in America, he signed for the New York Hungarians, but after a short spell he moved to Canada and signed for Toronto City. Th is club was managed by Malcolm All ison, Manchester City Coach. Another former Manchester name played in this team- Tony Brooke. In 1965 he returned to Shamrock Rovers ag a in for the second time and remained on until Dundalk snapped him up a s a winger. During his four years' stay in. Dundalk, he won a full International cap for Ireland against Spain. He then signed for Bohemians. A fast dire ct
