4 ( Hoops ~~old INTERNATIONAL forward DAMIEN RICHARDSON who made such a successful transition from home soccer to the English League with his one club, Gillingham, reflected recently on the marvellous memories he had of Shamrock Rovers, the team he idolised and eventually joined as a teenager. His span covered seven years and he performed under five managers. It was at Milltown that he opened up his first wage packet as a professional and with the exception of a league championship medal he collected a cupboard full of silverware. boy" talks to Rovers had always been the club that the family supported. I went along when I was eight and stood at Dalymount when they played the famous Busby Babes. to join them later on and turn out in European cup winners action was probably the real hightlight for me. It was, I think, against Cardiff C ity I made my European debut. It was scout GERRY MORAN who first saw me in a winning Home Farm side. I guested for Rovers at lnchicore on a Testimonial for the St. Patrick's goalkeeper DINNY LOWRY. I was 17. I remember people wondering why I wanted to leave Home Farm but the real reason was that I was joining a club with great players and you learn from the best. RONNIE NOLAN, JOHNNY FULLAM and FRANK O ' NEILL were internationals on the staff at the time. I was in the reserves with HUGHY BROPHY and JIMMY GREGG who later came through. PADDY AMBROSE was the manager. We had a goodish side and I think I got my debut for the first team in a Top Four match against Bohemians. Other players in the side were TONY O'CONNELL MICK SMYTH, BOBBY GILBERT, PAT COURT NEY and JOHN KEOGH. Initially new players joining were amateurs for a year until it was decided where you stood. I refused the terms, stayed an amateur and gained an international cap. I held out for an extra year and that' s the reason I got shillings!... they had offered 3.00.
5 BOB HENNESSY of Soccer Reporter The training was on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and with the lights. which weren ' t great but adequate. we would always have a match against the 1st XI. That was the big thing for us youngsters - to paly against Irish internationals. We travelled to matches by t rain or in a few old Princess cars. rarely did we go by coach. We were well treated and had proper meals etc. I picked up two cup winners medals and I can remember Waterford was the big threat those days. I can recall we had gone 11 games without defeat to set a record and Waterford came to Milltown. Great atmosphere at the ground. they said that nearly 25,000 were packed in. Well they beat us and went on to set up an unbeaten record of 13 matches without defeat! BILLY LORD was always the physio therapist. I remember he' d be giving you the treatment and the ash would drop from his Woodbine on to your leg and he would just rub it in We travelled in style and try and convince you that it did the skin good! MICKEY BURKE was another who was training there. What a character. They said at Rovers he was overlapping years before ALF RAMSEY and the rest of them thought about it. It was unheard of I believe in those days yet apparently it was his greatest asset. I played under LIAM TUOHY. PADDY AM BROSE. FRANK O'NEILL. BILLY YOUNG and then Liam again when he returned after the Cunningham family had left. At 21 I was all set to go to Preston North End. I agreed all with Rovers and the manager at Preston BOBBY SEITH. Then out of the blue the deal fell down at the last moment. I never found out why but that was the end in some respects. I should have gone anyway to.gain experience for myself. When I did go to England I was just 24 and really it was too late. Still. I left the best club at home. the old 'Hoops' Damien may have been 24 when he departed the Irish scene ironically hellbent on a career as a Radio Officer near London. But somewhere along the line Gillingham football club came into the picture and there he has stayed loyal to the Kent.side. He has represented his country on three occasions. chalked up over 300 club appearances and hit over 1 00 goals. one of the few Irishmen to do this. He takes a deserved testimonial next season and lives in Rainham with his wife RITA and children SHANE and TARA. 6 F.A.I. Cup failure was a big AS we begin another season (our 59th in the League of Ireland) it is time for a statistical look back on the season. Any season that Rovers fai l to score in the FAI Cup cannot be very good. However, that was the case, losing 2-0 at home to Bohemians in the fourth round. Our final Leag ue position was fourth, a point behind Athlone Town and eight adrift of UEFA representatives Dundalk. But, of course, w e did provide the top scorer in the League. Alan Campbell hitting 22 goals to scoop Soccer Reporter's 1,000 and equalling Eddi e Bailham's long -standing record as the club's top league scorer in a season. We failed to retain the Tyler All-Ireland Cup, but did have the consolation of seeing our semi - f inal conque r ors Athlone Town take the Cup. That game aga inst Athlone was John Gi les' last of the season and no doubt the boss was missed on the field. Derek Carthy ended our hopes in the League Cup semi-final and in the second round of the Leinster Senior SEAN KE LLY For Betting Value 5 Arbourfield, Dundrum. Phone and Branches disappointment Campbell's scoring highlight Cup Du nleary Ce ltic caused an upset by w inning 3-2. Both of those games were played at Tolka Park, which is no reflection of Home Farm 's ground, but maybe the Ri chmond Road venue is unlucky for The Hoops. You have grumbled on the terraces, moaned in the club bar, boasted to your friends about your club and never, never put it in w riting where the real people that count are sure to see it. Now is your chance to voice your opinion about Shamrock Rove rs or even the League of Ireland in general. A ll you have to do is w rite to the Prog ramme Editor, Shamrock Rovers, G lenmalure Park, M illtown w ith your name and address (not necessarily for publication) and your views w ill be read by thousands. Of course, if you have some n ice things to say - an odd bit of pra ise is a great boost to everyone - why not write to us about it. It is the aim of the new Shamrock Rovers prog ramme to reflect the view s of its supporters as well as those of the cl ub. i Manager's J Corner LAST Sunday we played very well against Sligo Rovers and put away the chances we created. something we have failed to do in recent games. Against Shelbourne in the leaguecupitwasso frustrating. but at the Showgrounds there was an improvement. Because we are a full-time outfit a lot is expected from us. but it should be remembered that we are a young side which needs encouragement. We have the potential to win the Championship and I know I can depend on our great supporters to help these youngsters along. As in all competitions it is essential to get off to a good start. so I'll be looking for a win today against t his new - look C ork United side and again next w eek against Drogheda United at United Park. Whilst in football nothing is certain. I feel that we are capable of giving our supporters something to shout about before this season is finished.

11 The Leeside club's new manager TERRY Delaney was appointed manager_ of Cork United last March. He was in charge for the last five League games of the season. Thirty-nine year old Terry played for Blackpool. but an injury ended his English League career and he finished his playing with non-league side Darwen. He worked as coach to Vancouver in the first division of the British Columbia League in Canada for ten years before moving to Cork three years ago. Prior to his appointment with United. Terry was manager of the University College. Cork side. SHORT HISTORY Sean Creedon From Albert Rovers to Cork United However, theydidgettothe FAI Cup semi-final, losing to eventual winners Dundalk. Their final League position was 11th. At the League of Ireland AGM in July, 1979, the club were given permission to change their name to Cork United. JOE Maher. Jack Murray and Teddy O'Sullivan were the men responsible for the formation of Albert Rovers in Twelve years later the club, which was based in The Marsh' area of Cork City, won the Beamish Cup, their first major honour. No marks for guessing which well-known Cork drink filled the Cup! There were more Cup successes in the fifties. First the Munster Senior Cup and then the FAI Intermediate Cup in '54 and '59. Albert Rovers took the place vacated by Cork Hibernians in the League of Ireland in Their first League game was a home tie against Shamrock Rovers on October 3, Barry Notley got their first League goal, but Rovers won It took them only one week to get over that initial setback. The following Sunday they won 2-0 at Oriel Park. But they didn't win at home until November 28, when they beat Limerick 4-2. At the end of their first season in membership, Albert Rovers had 16 points, the same total' as Limerick. But as the Shannonsiders had a superior goal difference, Albert had to apply for re-election along with Home Farm. The club changed their name to Cork Albert at the beginning of the season. but it didn't bring them any luck as they were hammered-5-0 by Bohemians at Dalymount. Once again they recovered from this setback and seven games later created their own bit of history by going to the top of the League following a 3-1 away win over Dundalk. Later in the season they added an's' to their name and finished a respectable ninth in the table. They also qualified for the League Cup Final where they eventually lost on penalties to Dundalk. Unfortunately, the same progress was not made in and although they did beat Bohemians at Dalymount Park in the League Cup, they didn't qualify for the final. Despite the fact that they are now the only Cork club in the League, last season was a poor one for the club. There was an effort by a group of local business people to try and buy out the franchise and Noel O'Mahoney, their manager since they joined the League, resigned. In the end they just escaped having to apply for re-election. This season, manager Terry Delaney has had a 'clear-out' and apart from Barry Notely and Alex Ludzic, most of his squad are newcomers to the League of Ireland scene. Hopefully they will show an improvement for the Leeside club. THE last goalkeeper to score direct from a kick-out in the League of Ireland was Alex Ludzik. The United 'keeper scored direct from a clearance in his club's 3-1 win over Dundalk at Oriel Park on October 9, Last season. Alex played a few games at centreforward. yet failed to find the net!

14 It said in the ~ress WHAT did the national press say about the Hoops' impressive win over Sligo Rovers last Sunday? The Irish Press had the encouraging heading "Classy Hoops Bright Form" over its report of the match. The intro was equally impressive " Shamrock Rovers' young lions sounded a championship warning with a convincing and by no means flattering three goal victory over Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds yesterday." The Irish Times reporter was impressed by the Rovers midfield play: " Shamrock's midfield, with Giles spraying sweet. sensible passes in every direction and Gannon and Gaffney matching his brilliance with their workrate, took control." And what about the opposition, Cork United? The Irish Press printed this: " Cork were well organised by their English-based midfielder, lan Seddon in the opening half, but when he faded in the second period, they were forced backwards as Dundalk pressure mounted." David Fa iers in the Evening Herald noted that " Dundalk were foiled of victory at Flower Lodge... by a brilliant display by Cork United goalkeeper Alex Ludzik. The Irish Times noted that " while the Cork performance could, at best, be described as a fight for survival, the fact is that they were not flattered in taking a point." So it would appear that the key men in the Corkmen's camp are lan Seddon and goalkeeper Alex Ludzik. ealex LUOZIK was in brilliant form for Cork United against Dundalk last week. Supporters Club THE Supporters Club' s activities are now in full swing and next Sunday (September 21) we are running a coach to Drogheda for our next League tie. 16 NINTH LEAGUE ENCOUNTER TODAY'S game is our ninth League encounter against Cork United. The table to date reads: P8 W4 D2 L2 F16 A7. -United's first-ever League game was against Rovers. On Sunday October 3, 1976, Albert Rovers (as they were then known) lost 2-1 to The Hoops at F lower Lodge. Barry Notely got the Cork club's first League goal, but goals by Mick Leech and Larry Wyse secured Rovers the points. In the return game at Milltown on January 2, 1977, Albert got their revenge in a bottom of the League clash. Going into that game. Rovers were third from the bottom, just three points ahead of the Cork club, who got the two points thanks to a Brendan Dreaper goal. In the season, today' s opponents were known as Cork Alberts. The first round game at Flower Lodge ended in a scoreless draw. but Rovers won the second round tie 2-1 on February 26, Steve Lynex got both of Rovers' goals and Redmond Lane was the visitor's scorer. On then to October 28, 1978, and the. first-ever Halloween Holiday. This time the name read Cork Alberts and they took the two points to lift themselves above Rovers, who were in a mid-. table position. Two goals by Junior Murphy, now with Thurles Town, and one by Jimmy. Nodwell, gone to Limerick United. gave Cork a 3-2 win. Rovers' scorers that day were Steve Lynex and Johnny Fullam. By the time the second round game was played on February 3, 1979 Rovers had climbed to fifth place in the table and John Giles was in great scoring form. His goal in the Hoops 3-0 win was his fifth in eight days. Ray Treacy and Eddie Byrne were the other scorers. The first of our two games last season was played on Saturday, September 1 to avoid a clash with the All Ireland Football final. Donie Madden got his first goal for United, but Eddie Byrne's goal got Rovers a share of the points. There can be no doubt that our last meeting was the most memorable of the eight. Played on December 30 last year, Rovers won 6-0. That is the record win since John Giles took charge in July, Rovers lead 5-0 at half-time and the win took us to fourth place in the table. Ray Treacy hit four goals and Liam Buckley and Alan Campbell were the other scorers. It was Liam's fourth consecutive game to score in, while Alan made it eight on the trot.
