The club changed their name to Cork Albert at the beginning of last season, but it didn't bring them any luck as they lost 0-6 to Bohemians at alymount. This was their worst ever defeat ; their record win was 6-1 against neighbours Cork Celtic. Once again they recovered from this setback and seven games later they created their own bit of history by going to the top of the League thanks to a 3-1 away win over 1 undalk. Unfortunately the same progress was not made last season and although they managed to beat Bohemians at alymount in the League Cup, they didn't qualify for the final and their League position in April was 11th. At the League of Ireland AGM last July the club were given permission to change their name to Cork United. But despite the fact that they now have the pick of Soccer players in Cork the club had had a dismal start to the season and a group of local business people recently tried to buy the franchise. One of the most appealing teatures of soccer is that it never stands still. Surprises are plentiful and happen every week, they are predictable in ti me - there will probably be one today - but not in location we hope its not at Milltown! And changes are inevitable. One of these changes has recently affected us when Eamon unphy resigned 3 weeks ago, relinquishing amongst his other duties his editorship of this programme. For a programme to be successful in League of Ireland terms it needs to be profitable or the club will cease its publication and it has to work buying for the supporter - its content has to be sufficiently original and informed to persuade the buyer to support the efforts made. In this area Eamon contributed totally, writing many articles which have brought a very satisfying resp onse and ideas which we have tried to formulate, in all his dealing with us he was frie ndly, cheerful and enthuasiastic, we wish him well in his new career. We wish to co11gratulatt: Robbie Lal or, Mick Ke nnedy, Harry Kenny, Ritchie Bayly and Michael Savage on winning.caps in the Under 21 international against Belgium before Christmas. Ludzic got his name on the scoresheet against undalk two years back. Once on the erby County payroll. Alex joined United from Cork Celtic at the beginning of last season. He was dropped in favour of Francis Lennox last month and was used as 12th man outfield. Captain of the club is Martin Sheehan. This tough defender was injured against Galway Rovers in November. Cork United is his third Leeside club, having played for Hibs and Celtic and he also had a season with Shelbourne. Capped at Inter League level. Before his injury Jimmy Nodwell was club skipper, but he was injured in the third series and did not resume until earlier this month against Finn Harps. Jimmy, an engineering student at UCC joined the club from Munster Senior League side Rockmoimt. He was chosen in the team of the year by the Soccer Writers'. It's been a bad s~ason injury wise for the club and Barry O'onovan, ave Wiggington and avid Waters have all been sidelined with injuries. O' onovan made his debut against Limerick last February. His previous club was Galway Rovers. avid Waters joined United from Tramore Athletic and made his League debut against Limerick in March Aged 23 avid is a Radio Technician. Redmond Lane is Mr. Versatility at the club. He is equally at home at outside left or left back. Another recruit from Tramore Athletic, Redmond hopes to return to New York Apollos in the new Year.
