Season Summary With a new-look squad, Dundalk struggled from the outset, although they did start better than some others. Five points from their opening four games included a home win over UCD, but it would be the last game of the league season before they won again at Oriel Park a statistic which tells you all you need to know! After a memorable win in Richmond Park in May, things were looking up, but incredibly an 18-game winless streak followed, with last-minute heartache in Bray and Drogheda in August adding to the pain. In between, there was a spirited FAI Cup run, but ultimately the season would boil down to the dreaded playoff against old friends Waterford United. Seán McCaffrey s first outing as Dundalk manager came in his hometown of Monaghan as the Lilywhites made the short trip north knowing they had not won a competitive fixture at Gortakeegan in almost six years. A point from a scoreless draw was hard-earned. The opening home league match, against Saint Patrick s Athletic seven days later, was a footballing lesson for McCaffrey s young guns, but they went on to secure four points from their next two games away to Drogheda United and at home to UCD. In between, there was a Leinster Senior Cup defeat by Crumlin United which mattered little, and after beating the Students there was a 3-0 loss at would-be champions Sligo Rovers. However, that game at The Showgrounds offered hope, with Dundalk the better side in the opening 45 minutes. Another scoreless draw, at home to Shelbourne on 6 April, would be the side s last clean-sheet of the league campaign, and their defensive frailties were there for all to see a week later when they were hammered 6-0 by Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium equalling the club s biggest ever league defeat by the Hoops. Still, there was worse to come later in the year. The previous Tuesday, Dundalk had defeated First Division leaders Longford Town in the League Cup to progress to the quarter-finals, and just seven days after the mauling by Rovers, the season took another twist when they defeated Derry City at The Brandywell. After the game, McCaffrey stated that one swallow doesn t make a summer, and he hoped to pull away from the bottom in the following four games, three of which were at home, and all against teams around them in the table Bohemians, Cork City, Bray Wanderers and Monaghan. Instead, Dundalk took zero points from the 12 available, leaving them in the mire. At this stage, trying to write the script for the Louth club was an impossible task, and three days after losing at home to Monaghan, they went to Richmond Park, faced an unbeaten St. Pat s, fell behind, were reduced to ten men for an incident involving two of their own players at half-time, had almost nil possession and then won thanks to two late free-kicks from Mark Griffin! Believing their yellow kit was a lucky charm, Dundalk wore it again four days later, at home, as they progressed to the last 16 of the FAI Cup by beating Leinster Senior League (LSL) outfit Saint Patrick s Catholic Youths 1-0 a scoreline which doesn t tell the Lilywhites total dominance. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 2

In front of the TV cameras, Dundalk s last game before the midseason break was a home defeat by high-flying Drogheda United, but again it offered some encouragement. With Monaghan s demise during the break, the Lilywhites gained points on their rivals without kicking a ball. On their return, avoiding defeat away to UCD was crucial, and after taking the lead through Nathan Murphy s first ever senior goal, they settled for a point. Three days later, Dundalk exited the League Cup at the lasteight stage on penalties at Drogheda, who would go on to win the competition in September. Topsy-turvy was the name of the game for Dundalk, who took the lead at home to Sligo on 29 June only for their joy to be short-lived as Danny North struck either side of the break. The following week, a 4-0 defeat at Shelbourne after a dreadful performance would ultimately cost McCaffrey his job, with Darius Kierans stepping up to take over for the visit of Shamrock Rovers on 13 July. Thrown into the job just over 24 hours before kick-off, Dundalk showed plenty of spirit and led through Gary Shanahan s first-half strike, only for Daryl Kavanagh to peg them back past the hour mark. Still, a point was gratefully received. Derry then visited and Dundalk rode their luck as the visitors hit the woodwork on countless occasions. The home side felt they had a goal when Robert Waters header was clawed off the line by Ger Doherty, before David McDaid eventually put the Candystripes in front on 74 minutes. But Dundalk s spirit was evident when they snatched a point five minutes from the end. That was followed by a poor performance against Bohs at Dalymount Park, although they did go close to somehow rescuing a draw having fallen 2-0 behind. With severe financial problems, several players went and came, with the return of Stephen Maher to the club a welcome one in late August. Before that, the visit of Cork and a trip to Bray would see two 1-1 draws but it was the second of those, at the Carlisle Grounds on 10 August, that would prove the most costly. Having taken the lead through Shanahan early in the second half, Dundalk looked like opening up a six-point gap on UCD at the bottom after the Students conceded late away to Shelbourne. Instead, Dave Webster s 94th-minute strike broke Dundalk hearts and then Paul Corry smashed in a wonder strike in the 8pm kick-off at Tolka Park to leave just two points between the sides. That would prove the turning point of the season as UCD went on to pick up another four wins in their next five outings, including at Oriel Park, with their only defeat in that period coming at Sligo. On the flipside, Dundalk lost all of their five subsequent games, but it was the second of those which was the hardest to take. Having led 2-0 inside 26 minutes at Drogheda, the Lilywhites were still in front three minutes from the end only to somehow lose 3-2. A home defeat by the Students seven days later as good as condemned the Louth club to their fourth ever playoff. A week before the defeat in Drogheda, Dundalk had dispatched another LSL side Malahide United to progress to the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup, where they travelled to Bohs. There was little hope of a first semi-final appearance in the competition in ten years, but Griffin stepped up to curl in a fabulous 25-yard free-kick 15 minutes from time to keep the dream alive. But after another league defeat, at home by Shels a week later, the floodgates opened as Dundalk shipped 11 goals in trips to Tallaght Stadium and The Brandywell. The 7-0 loss to Rovers equalled their biggest ever defeat by the Hoops in any competition. The Cup semi-final quickly came and went as St. Pat s recorded a 3-0 win at Oriel Park, before Dundalk ended a run of seven straight league defeats with a 2-2 draw at home to Bohs on 13 October. A 3-0 defeat by Cork the following weekend meant Dundalk did go into the last league game of the season with something to play for trying to avoid equalling a club record of 19 league games without a win. And they did just that, thanks to Barry Conlon s strike ten minutes from time. That boosted spirits for the visit of Waterford in the playoff four days later and after a nervous start Lorcan Shannon fired Dundalk in front. Maher was then dismissed and by the hour mark Waterford had their noses in front. However, after a difficult season, Stephen McDonnell stood up to bring the ten men back to 2-2. Buoyed by that, Dundalk went to Waterford in confident mood and in the end the hero would be Michael Rafter, who scored in either half to preserve Dundalk s top-flight status after the most difficult of years, both on and off-the-field. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 3

Those difficulties threatened to continue after the season s end when Waterford lodged an appeal against Rafter s eligibility through the entire year, but their objection was thrown out, just as it had been 15 years earlier in the case of Jeff McNamara after they had also fallen to Dundalk in the playoffs. Stat Attack Dundalk finished bottom of the Premier Division table for only the fourth time in their history after doing so previously in 1953/54, 1954/55 and 1998/99. Their accumulation of 20 points (or 21 including results against Monaghan United) was well off their totals since returning to the top flight in (2009 & 2011), 48 (2010) and was their lowest league total since 1972/73. Round-by-round, Dundalk showed a gradual descent in earning points, picking up 9/33 in Round 1, 8/33 in Round 2 and 4/30 in Round 3. In comparison, 9/33 was Dundalk s lowest best round since returning to the Premier Division. Their best round totals in order were: 18/27 (2010, Round 1), 16/27 (2011, Round 2) and 14/27 (2009, Round 3). They also picked up 15/27 (2010, Round 4). 4/30 in the last round which was boosted hugely by their win over Bray Wanderers on the final day was also their worst round over the last four seasons, averaging just 0.4 points per game compared to 0.44 per game in the final round of For the fourth time in their history, Dundalk entered the promotion/relegation playoffs at the end of the season, with it the second time they did so as the Premier Division team. They had previously played in the playoffs in 1997 (3-1 aggregate final win over Waterford United), 2006 (3-2 aggregate final victory over Waterford) and 2007 (2-0 loss to Finn Harps in one-legged semi-final). Dundalk played a total of 41 games in 2012, with their record reading: W9, D11, L21, F37, A73. This was spread over five competitions: League, League Playoff, FAI Cup, League Cup and Leinster Senior Cup. This was one more game than they played in 2009 (40) but less than 2010 (46) and 2011 (50). Including their two results against Monaghan (0-0 and 1-2), Dundalk s overall league record for 2012 read: P32, W4, D9, L19, F24, A65, PTS 21. This is in comparison to 12 months earlier, which read: P36, W11, D11, L14, F50, A53, PTS 44. For the third season in a row, the club reached a semi-final of a cup competition, this time the FAI Cup the first time they had reached that stage since winning the trophy for the ninth time back in In 2010, Dundalk reached the League Cup semi-final and in 2011 made it to the last four and then final of the Setanta Sports Cup. Dundalk played 19 games at home over the year (record: W3, D6, L10, F16, A28) and 22 away from Oriel Park (record: W6, D5, L11, F21, A45). In the league, including games against Monaghan, they played 16 times at home (record: W2, D5, L9, F13, A23, PTS11) and 16 times away (record: W2, D4, L10, F11, A42, PTS10). This compares to a haul of 24, 25 and 24 home points respectively since Away from home, it compares with 20, 23 and 20 points respectively. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 4

In Cup competition (FAI Cup, League Cup & Leinster Senior Cup), Dundalk played seven games (record: W4, D1, L2, F9, A6). At home, their Cup record was: P2, W1, D0, L1, F1, A3. Away, it was: P5, W3, D1, L1, F8, A3). In the FAI Cup, Dundalk defeated Saint Patrick's Catholic Youths (1-0), Malahide United (4-0) and Bohemians (1-0) without conceding a goal, before falling to Saint Patrick's Athletic with a 3-0 defeat in the semi-final at Oriel Park. In the League Cup, Dundalk received a bye before coming from behind to defeat Longford Town in the last 16. They lost out to Drogheda United on penalties in the quarter-finals, with John Mountney, Shane O'Neill and Mark Griffin all missing in the shootout. In the Leinster Senior Cup, Dundalk fell at the first hurdle for the second season running, exiting to Crumlin United on a 1-0 scoreline after the tie at Captain's Road in Dublin. Their league results left Dundalk tenth of 11 on the home table, with Bray only below them on goal difference. Dundalk were bottom of the away table, picking up two less points on the road than UCD. Dundalk fared best against UCD in the league, picking up four points against them with a zero goal difference. They also collected four points from their meetings with Bray and Derry City. Dundalk took points off every team with the exception of champions Sligo Rovers. They only failed to score against Shelbourne, while they conceded most against Shamrock Rovers (14). Dundalk scored the least number of home goals in the Premier Division (12) but conceded less than Shels and Bray. Away from Oriel Park, like in the overall league, Dundalk scored the least (11) and conceded the most (42). Dundalk s record of F23-A63 in the league (excluding results against Monaghan) showed a -40 goal difference, compared with 2009 (F46-A51 GD -5), 2010 (F46-A50 GD -4) and 2011 (F50-A53-3). Incidentally, in all competitions, their F37-A73 GD -36 compares with 2009 (F49-A55 GD -6), 2010 (F59-A67 GD -8) and 2011 (F71-A70 GD +1). Dundalk scored 16 first-half goals and 21 second-half goals, while conceding 28 goals in the first 45 minutes and 45 goals after the break. They scored most of their 37 goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half (9), while they also conceded most of the 73 goals in this period (19) - that is 26%. In the league, they scored half (12 out of 24) of their goals in the first 15 minutes of each half (six in each). They conceded 16 of the 65 goals (24.62%) in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Dundalk scored just one goal in injury-time at the end of a game - Griffin's 92nd-minute winner at St. Pat's on 21 May. They conceded three injury-time goals; two of those costing them points, in Bray on 10 August (1-1 FT) and at Drogheda on 31 August (2-3 FT). In their 41 games, Dundalk led 10 times at the break, were level 13 times and behind 18 times. In the second half, they 'won' 10, 'drew' 11 and 'lost' 20. In the league, they were ahead at half-time seven times, level 10 times and behind 15 times. They 'won' four second halves, 'drew' ten and 'lost' 18. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 5

Having taken the lead 15 times, Dundalk went on to win just seven games in all competitions, drawing five and losing three. In the league, they broke the deadlock ten times, going on to win just three, drawing four and losing three. After going behind 23 times in all competitions, Dundalk went on to lose 18, winning two (at Longford in the League Cup on 10 April and St. Pat's in the league on 21 May) and drawing three. In the league, having gone behind 19 times, they won just once (at St. Pat's) and lost 16 times, meaning just a gain of five points when the opposition team scored first. Having been ahead at the break ten times, Dundalk went on to win four, draw four and lose two (at home to Monaghan on 18 May and away to Drogheda on 31 August). In the league, from seven leads at the break, Dundalk held onto two, drew three and lost two. From 13 level positions at the break, Dundalk went on to win four times, draw five and lose four. In the league, having been level at the break ten times, Dundalk went on to win just once (at home to UCD on 23 March), draw five and lose four. Having been behind 18 times at half-time, Dundalk went on to win just once (at St. Pat's on 21 May) while drawing twice and losing 15 times. In the league alone, they trailed 15 times at the break, going on to win once, draw once and lose 13 times. Their biggest-margin win of the season came in the FAI Cup away to Malahide, on a 4-0 scoreline on 24 August. All four of their league wins came on a 2-1 scoreline, while their biggest home win was also by a one-goal margin (three times). Their biggest defeat of the season came away to Shamrock Rovers on 28 September when they lost 7-0 in the league. This was the club's biggest ever league defeat by the Hoops and equalled an FAI Cup defeat to them from Their biggest home and Cup competition loss was against St. Pat s (0-3) on 7 October. Their biggest home league defeat was 2-0, which happened three times, the last being against Bray on 11 May. They only once recorded back-to-back wins, against Saint Patrick's Athletic and Saint Patrick's CY on 21 and 25 May. They failed to record consecutive wins in the league, with the last time they did that being in late June They had back-to-back draws three times. They twice lost four games in a row while in the league they lost seven consecutive games between 20 August and 2 October. Their longest unbeaten run totalled three games (two wins and a draw), in the final three outings of the season. In the league, it was just two games, which happened three times. They lost five straight league games at home between 27 April and 29 June, with a draw at home to Shamrock Rovers on 13 July avoiding equalling a club record from Dundalk went 13 games without a league win at home, from 23 March until the final game of the season, at home to Bray on 26 October. They also went 18 games without a league win anywhere, between 1 June and that Bray game. If they had not beaten Bray, they would have equalled a club record set under Trevor Anderson over 2002/ dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 6

Dundalk ended the season without a win in their final nine away league games (two draws/seven defeats), with their last one coming against St. Pat's at Richmond Park on 21 May. They lost their final five away league games, shipping 20 goals in the process. Their top scorer in all competitions was Michael Rafter (9), who also topped the club's league scoring chart (7). This compares with Mark Quigley from 12 months earlier; 21 (Overall) & 13 (League). Rafter, Gary Shanahan and Griffin scored 24 of Dundalk's 37 goals (64.86%) between them. Only Shanahan - who led the scoring charts for most of the season - and Griffin scored in consecutive games, with Shanahan the only one to do so in the league (against Cork & Bray on 3 & 10 August). Rafter was the side's top scorer at Oriel Park with four goals (all league), followed by Shanahan on three. Griffin's fondness for scoring away from home was evident again with seven goals (four in league). 14 of his 16 senior club goals have now come away from Oriel. In all competitions, Peter Cherrie made both the most appearances (39) and most starts (38). Cherrie was also the only player to appear in all 32 league games, starting 31 of those. Mountney (36 apps/35 starts) and Rafter (36 apps/34 starts) were the outfield players who appeared the most in all competitions. Mountney made the most league appearances of the outfield players, starting 28 times. Cherrie made both most consecutive appearances (33) and starts (23) in all competitions, while in outfield players, Mountney made the most consecutive appearances (24) and Foran starts (21). In the league alone, Cherrie made the most consecutive appearances (all 32 games), while Mountney made the most starts in a row (20). Dundalk kept seven clean-sheets in all competitions and just three in the league (2011: Total 11, League 9). Their last clean-sheet in the league came way back on 6 April, 27 games ago. They failed to keep consecutive clean-sheets, with the last time they did that being in July They conceded four or more goals four times in all competitions, with 4-0 defeats at Shels and Derry and 6-0 and 7-0 losses at Shamrock Rovers. They 'won to nil' four times through the season but failed to do so in the league, with the last time they did that being in their final home game of the 2011 season, against Drogheda (1-0 on 21 October '11). Dundalk scored in 24 of their 41 games, and in 17 of their 32 league games. They scored twice ten times and, while never scoring exactly three, netted four times once, in the win over Malahide. The most consecutive games they scored in was seven (18 May-29 June), while in the league it was five, which they did twice (18 May-29 June & 13 July-10 August). They conceded in 11 consecutive games between 1 June and 20 August, and conceded in 26 consecutive league games from 13 April to the end of the season. 12 different players scored for Dundalk during the season, with nine different scorers in the Premier Division. Quickest: Rafter v Monaghan (1 minute), Latest: Griffin v St. Pat s (92 minutes), both May. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 7

52 different players scored against the Lilywhites, including Ben McLaughlin's own goal at Shels in July. There were 45 different scorers against Dundalk in the league. While McLaughlin put through his own net, Dundalk went through the season without benefitting from an own goal. No player scored a hat-trick for Dundalk during 2012 but three players netted braces (Griffin (2), Shanahan and Rafter). One player - Gary Twigg on 13 April - scored a treble against Dundalk, with 11 players netting doubles, a list which also includes Twigg. With that, Twigg scored the most against Dundalk (5), followed closely by Danny North (4-2 braces) and Evan McMillan (3). Dundalk were not awarded a penalty in the league. They failed to convert both penalties that came their way in Cup competition; Rafter blazed over at home to Saint Patrick's CY and Chris Shields' spot-kick at Malahide was saved. This compares with a 100 percent strike-rate from eight penalties in They conceded six penalties, all of which were converted. All six were also in league competition. This included conceding two penalties in the one game on two occasions (Jason Byrne for Bray on 11 May and Gary McCabe for Rovers on 28 September converting all). On discipline, Dundalk received 78 yellow cards and four red cards in their 41 games (Yellow/Red Cards: League 63/3, Playoff 3/1, FAI Cup 7/0, League Cup 5/0, Leinster Senior Cup 0/0). Shields accumulated the most, with 10 yellows and one red. (2011: 89 yellows/5 reds). Paul McLaughlin was the referee who took charge of Dundalk's games the most (5) but he was among the lowest, on average, at dishing out yellow cards. In total, 16 referees shared the 41 games, with Richie Winter handing out seven yellows in two games, giving him the highest average. Graham Kelly issued two of Dundalk's four red cards. Dundalk's four reds was the lowest they have received since being promoted in (2009), 10 (2010) and 5 (2011). This, however, was with nine games less than By the 41-game mark in 2011, Dundalk had received just one red card (Cherrie on the opening day of the league season). Dundalk used a total of 38 players in matchday squads during 2012, with 36 of those earning match-time. A total of 32 players started games. In the league alone, it was the same, with 36 used and 32 from the start. 17 players featured in the playoff, 15 from the start. In the FAI Cup, they used 21 players, 16 from the start. In the League Cup, 20 players featured, again 16 from the start. In one Leinster Senior Cup tie, Dundalk used 14 players. Of the 36 players used, 8 were local and made 126 appearances between them - Stephen McDonnell (34 appearances), Griffin (24), Eoghan Osborne (23), Nathan Murphy (17), McLaughlin (15), Barry Conlon (7), Conor McDonald (5) and Gerard McSorley (1). (2011: 9/26 local, total apps: 187). Dundalk kept the same starting XI in consecutive games just once, in the second game of the season. That was the only time they did so in the league only too. Their most changes were eight, with their Leinster Senior Cup game at Crumlin being the key reason. They also made seven changes for their final league game of the season, at home to Bray on 26 October. dundalkfc.com the Club s Award-Winning Official Website 8

Dundalk had a total of 25 first-team debutants in Mountney, Rafter, Shields, Foran, Shanahan, Paul Walsh, Robert Waters, Peter Thomas, McLaughlin, Shane O'Neill, Paul Whelan, Mark O'Brien, Lorcan Shannon, Luke Danville, Gareth Coughlan, Dan Cunningham, William Woods, Conlon, Robbie Gaul, Garreth Brady, Ger Hanley, Mark Leavy, Philip McCabe, McSorley and Michael Osobe. One of those debutants - Foran - was named the club's 'Player of the Year'. Dundalk changed manager during the season for the first time since Then, Tommy Connolly took charge of the final game of the campaign after the departure of Jim Gannon. This time, Seán McCaffrey left on 12 July, after 21 games in charge, with Darius Kierans taking over for the remaining 20 games. McDonnell captained the team in the opening two games of the season, in the absence of Shields. Waters (in the LSC), Cherrie (on his 100th League appearance), Foran and Liam Burns also skippered the team from the start during the year. Cherrie made his 100th league appearance for the club in the home draw with Derry on 20 July. Murphy topped the 'Unused Substitutes' chart on 16, with Hanley top of the league pile on 14. The youngest player used was McLaughlin who was aged 16 years and 338 days old when he made his debut away to Crumlin in the LSC on 19 March. It was the second season running that Dundalk had a 16-year-old debutant, after McDonald in September The oldest player used was Conlon who was 34 years and 25 days old when he came on against Bray at Oriel Park on 26 October. Of the 36 players used, the average age was just The 26 players in the squad at the end of the season had an average age of Meanwhile, Dundalk s long wait for a home win over St. Pat s continues into 2013 after being beaten three times by the Saints at Oriel Park. The last time Dundalk beat them at the border venue was back in November On the flipside, UCD won in the league at Oriel Park for the first time in almost eight years in September, a game which also produced their first Premier Division win at the ground in over 13 years. Dundalk failed to beat Sligo for the second season running while their wait for a win at The Showgrounds now extends to over three years. Dundalk were also unable to beat Shamrock Rovers for a second year in succession, having won three of the four meetings between the clubs in To add to a miserable year, Dundalk lost at United Park for the first time in the league in 14 years when an injury-time goal from John Sullivan completed the turnaround for Drogheda who came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the death. On the last day of the season, Dundalk beat Bray at home for the first time in over three years but they failed to beat Shelbourne once more in the Premier Division, with the last time they did that being in January 1999 eight top-flight meetings ago.
