Glenmalure Park, Milltown. *************************************** EDITORIAL A Tribute To Football's Greatest Friend The Press Much t ime has passed and many changes have taken place since t he days of Dr. Johnson when newspaper reporters were often regarded as grubby and meddlesome people. Their reports then in many, fields often owed more to a fertile imagination than to factual objectivity. To-day the gentlemen of the Press play an important role in affairs and their status in the community is likewise one of dignity and power. In sport no less than in other fields they wield an important influence. Their obvious task which they accomplish efficiently is the accurate and objective report of games. Unbiased reports of this type form an important and integral part of the familiar pattern of contemporary soccer. They are read avidly by thousands of soccer enthusiasts. Indeed a spectators view of a game in perspective may be influenced more by the sports writers than by personal and independent witnessing of events. Such is the power of the written word. Power indeed, and it is a force which can be used for the good of the game, as it often has been in the past. The Press can advise and counsel. It can spotlight abuse and improper practices with a glare of publicity. It is impartial thundering in turn aga inst the players, legislators or the public when one or other offends against the laws or spirit of the game. At the best, then, the Press can be a great influence for good in soccer. It can be a defence and a shield. We must not of course blind ourselves to t he fact that it does not always conform to this high standard, sometimes some members of the Pres; fail to maintain this ideal and abuse their power but misuse of freedom is no argument against the important role of the Press in ~port, because in general the influence it exerts is Salutary, Benevolent and Good. To the members of the Irish Sporting Press we say you are doing a great job and we wish you a Prosperous New Year. 6 OUR VISITORS Our opponents to-day Cork Hibernians are styled The Babes of the League. To us they are anything but babes. They have been veritable giant killers. Last year they took three points from us in the League and cost us a trip to Madrid. In the Shield this season they defeated us in Cork, a defeat which cost us the loss of the Shield. Under the guidance of my old friend George Lax, who was assistant manager to the famous Major Frank Buckley at Wolverhampton George has greatly improved the playing ability of his young team.
