Locate the following cities of Ireland surfing in the Internet and write their names down in the map above: Galway Wexford Tralee Belfast Cork Dublin Kilkenny Derry 3
5 Ireland flag The Republic of Ireland's flag is made of three equal-sized rectangles of orange, white, and green (this type of flag is called a tricolor). The green side is by the flagpole. This flag was first used in The green colour on the flag represents the native people of Ireland (most of them are Roman Catholic). The orange colour represents the British supporters of William of Orange who settled in Northern Ireland in the 17th century (most of them are Protestant). The white colour in the center of the flag represents peace between these two groups of people. Colour the flag. Answer the following questions: In the Irish flag, what colour is placed nearest the flagpole? What colour represents the native people of Ireland? 6 HISTORY OF ST. PATRICK St. Patrick's Day honours St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who in the year 432, left his home to bring Christianity to Ireland. Irish people celebrate St. Patrick's Day on March 17. This day, they dance the Irish jig and meet to sing Irish songs. People wear green in memory of Ireland, the Emerald Isle and wear shamrocks made of three leaves. In Ireland, this is a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. March 17 was the day when St. Patrick died. Irish people don't know the date of his birth, most scholars believe the year was 385 AD and the year of his death was 461 AD. St. Patrick was born in Wales, studied religion to become a priest and then went to Ireland to teach the people about God. There are many wonderful stories about St. Patrick, some true and some not true. The most famous legend is that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. This did not happen but the Irish will tell you that you cannot find a snake throughout the whole country of Ireland. Read the text above and then answer the following questions: Who s St. Patrick?. When do Irish people celebrate this festival?. What do they do at St. Patrick s Day? And what do they wear?. When did St. Patrick die?. Where was St. Patrick born?. Was he a pope or a priest?. What did St. Patrick do in Ireland? Is it true or false?. 5
7 The Legend of the Leprechauns Leprechauns are little make-believe fairies that live in Ireland. They are the shoemakers for the fairies and wear green suits. They live at the end of a rainbow where they have their hidden place. The story says that if you catch one, you can make him tell you where he hides his gold and you will be fortunate. No one has caught one yet...but start looking today!! Good luck!! Read the text above and then answer the following questions: Who are the leprechauns?. What do they wear?. Where do they live?. What do they hide in their secret place?. What happens if you catch one?. 6
