We kicked off our celebration with a fun lunch outing to The Irish Rover. Throughout the month we enjoyed the soothing sounds of Lorinda Jones and her dulcimer and Irish harps, as well as the lively sounds of Louisville's own Gilbert Kaelin and his accordian. The Louisville Irish Dancers stopped by to dance more than a few jigs, and the St. Patty's Party Bus was a huge hit! We drove through the beautiful Beckley Creek Park while enjoying hard pretzels and, of course, green beer! Louisville has a deep Irish heritage which our residents embrace and celebrate. RESIDENT HIGHLIGHT Don Fightmaster Louisville, Kentucky COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT Ireland!

We explored the famed sites as well as their remarkable economic progress. Don lost an arm in an automobile accident while he was serving in the Air Force in the 50's.

Don's golfing career has led him to seven American One Arm Championships and two world championship titles.

2 RESIDENT HIGHLIGHT Don Fightmaster Louisville, Kentucky COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT Ireland! In March we took an 'arm-chair' tour of Ireland, The Emerald Isle, where we took an in-depth look at the people of Ireland and their Gaelic roots, the language and its music and traditions. We explored the famed sites as well as their remarkable economic progress. Don lost an arm in an automobile accident while he was serving in the Air Force in the 50's. Afterward, he attended IU where a friend bet him that he couldn't play golf with one arm. He taught himself to play discovering a love for the game. Don's golfing career has led him to seven American One Arm Championships and two world championship titles. He founded the Don Fightmaster Golf Tournament for Exceptional Children which has raised over $1 million for children with physical challenges. In 2000 Don started the North American One Arm Golf Association. Known as the Arnold Palmer of amputee golf, he has been inducted in the American Softball Association AND the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. Please come join us for our Culinary Chat on Thursday, April 26th at 1:30 in the Activities Room as we develop our holiday menus. This month s Ice Cream flavors of the month are Spumoni and Coffee. I wanted to say THANK YOU to all Families, Residents, Friends and Co-Workers for your support during this difficult time. Game Tutorials We have had quite a few new residents whom have expressed interest in our games, but are not sure how to play.

Bring your own ideas of games you would like to play; we are always looking for new ideas. These games not only exercise our brains, but they are a great way to make new friends!

! Fitness for Older Adults Participating in a balanced fitness program contributes to your well-being at every age and regular exercise is vital for older adults.

Beginning this month we will offer 'tutorials' to explain how fun and simple these games are to play! So, watch your calendar for the days we will be showing you how to play. Bring your own ideas of games you would like to play; we are always looking for new ideas. These games not only exercise our brains, but they are a great way to make new friends! We'll even entice you with chocolate... COME JOIN THE FUN!! Fitness for Older Adults Participating in a balanced fitness program contributes to your well-being at every age and regular exercise is vital for older adults. Regular exercise can help control your blood pressure, body weight, and cholesterol levels. It reduces your risk of hardened arteries, heart attack, and stroke. It also strengthens your muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones to help fight osteoporosis and lower your risk of falling or other injury. Keeping your body strong and limber can help you maintain your independence as you age. If you haven t been physically active for a while, start slowly. Gradually build your endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Walking for just five or 10 minutes at a time on several days each week is a great way to begin. Once you can walk for 30 minutes at a time, you ve built a solid foundation and are ready to add more challenging activities to your routine. Starting a basic strength routine while you begin your aerobic routine will help you build the strength you need to support your aerobic workouts.

5 A LETTER FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Nancy Orr-Rainey (502) EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Mariana Hjazeen Sous Chef/Kitchen Manager Medicare Fraud is No April Fool s Joke As of April 1, the federal government will start mailing out new Medicare cards that do not include your social security number. This was passed by Congress to help protect seniors from thieves that steal your identity and attempt to rip you off. The Federal Trade Commission is already reporting that there are con artists identifying themselves as being from the government or Medicare and trying to get your social security number and bank account so you, can get your new card. HANG UP! MEDICARE WILL NEVER CALL YOU BY PHONE AND ASK FOR THIS INFORMATION. You may receive a recorded message encouraging you to call right away or lose your benefits. DON T BELIEVE IT! You should never give your social security number to anyone over the phone. In addition, you should not carry your social security number with you. Place it somewhere safe like a bank lock box or in a place only you and your family can identify. Mariana and her husband of 14 years, Kurt, moved to Louisville from Jordan ten years ago. They and their children, Yazan, Max and Ava attend St. Aloysius. This is where Mariana learned of our volunteer program here at Magnolia Springs East. Four years ago she began volunteering for Pretty Nails as well as helping out with our holiday events. One short year later, Mariana started working in the kitchen where she has worked her way up to Sous Chef! "I love my job and the residents too!" she tells us, and it shows! Besides her magnificent cooking skills, she comes out of the kitchen to spend time with the residents every night. Thank you for a job WELL DONE!
