Match background A year after Guangzhou Evergrande of China became the second team to lift the AFC Champions League trophy twice, Korea Republic s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates will battle for the right to become the third club to achieve that feat when they meet in the final of the 2016 tournament. Not since Al Ain were beaten by Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia in 2005 have two former AFC Champions League winners met in the final. Al Ain won the inaugural tournament in 2003 with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Thailand s BEC Tero Sasana while Jeonbuk became the first east Asian side to win the trophy after beating Al Karamah of Syria 3-2 on aggregate in Jeonbuk missed the chance to win the competition for a second time in 2011 when they were beaten on penalties by Al Sadd of Qatar in the final but the K League Classic side secured their place in the final for a third time after a strong run in this season s competition. The 2015 K League Classic champions topped Group E in the opening round and edged Australia s Melbourne Victory 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 16 before seeing off China s Shanghai SIPG in the quarter-finals with a resounding 5-0 win in the second leg. That set up an all-south Korean semi-final against FC Seoul in which Choi Kang-hee s side grabbed the initiative by thrashing their K League rivals 4-1 in the first leg. Seoul won the return game 2-1 but it was not enough to prevent Jeonbuk advancing to the final with a 5-3 aggregate triumph. Meanwhile, Al Ain recovered after a poor start to their campaign to reach the final for the first time in 11 years. The 2015 UAE Arabian Gulf League champions were beaten 2-1 by Qatari side El Jaish in their first two games in Group D but bounced back to take 10 points from their next four games as they reached the knockout stage for a third consecutive year. After getting through the last 16 against Zobahan of Iran and the quarter-finals against Lokomotiv of Uzbekistan with crucial away wins in the return games, they met El Jaish again in the semi-finals and exacted revenge by beating the Qatari side 3-1 in the UAE before holding on for a 2-2 draw in the second game in Doha to advance 5-3 on aggregate.

3 Match facts Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Al Ain first met in the AFC Champions League in the 2004 quarter-finals when the K League side prevailed 5-1 on aggregate after winning 1-0 in the UAE and 4-1 in South Korea. JEONBUK HYUNDAI MOTORS Team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are appearing in the AFC Champions League final for the third time in 10 appearances in the competition. They beat Al Karamah of Syria 3-2 on aggregate in the 2006 final but lost 4-2 in a penalty shootout to Al Sadd of Qatar after a 2-2 draw in South Korean clubs have appeared in seven of the last 12 AFC Champions League finals, winning the competition four times. However, Jeonbuk s victory in 2006 is the only time a Korean side has won a final played over two legs. Jeonbuk s 4-1 victory over Al Ain in the 2004 quarter-finals is their only previous home match against a United Arab Emirates club in the competition. They have hosted Middle Eastern sides on five other occasions, drawing 2-2 in 2004 and winning 2-1 in 2011 against Saudi Arabia s Al Ittihad, beating Al Karamah 2-0 in 2006, losing 0-2 to Al Shabab of Saudi Arabia in 2010 and drawing 2-2 with Al Sadd in the 2011 final. They have not lost a home game in the competition since a 2-1 defeat to K League rivals Pohang Steelers in May In their last 11 ACL games in Jeonju, they have seven wins and four draws. In their seven home matches in this season s tournament, they have six wins and one draw, scoring 17 goals and conceding only five. Players Goalkeeper Kwoun Sun-tae is the only current member of the Jeonbuk squad who played in their victorious 2006 side. Defender Kim Hyung-il won the competition with Pohang Steelers in 2009, while midfielder Lee Ho and forward Kim Shin-wook were in the Ulsan Hyundai side that lifted the trophy in Leonardo is the second-highest scorer in the tournament with eight goals, five behind his Brazilian compatriot Adriano, who scored 13 for FC Seoul. Defender Cho Sung-hwan is suspended for the first leg of the final after receiving his second yellow card of the knockout stage in the second leg of the semi-final against FC Seoul. However, defender Choi Chul-soon is available to play after completing a one-game suspension in the second leg of the semi-finals. Domestic form Jeonbuk saw the K League Classic title snatched from them on the final day of the season on 6 November when they were beaten 1-0 at home by FC Seoul, who leapfrogged them into top spot and were crowned champions.

4 AL AIN Team Al Ain are appearing in the AFC Champions League final for the third time in 11 appearances in the competition. They won the inaugural tournament in 2003 with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Thailand s BEC Tero Sasana in the final but went down 5-3 on aggregate to Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia in the 2005 final. This is the second consecutive final to feature a United Arab Emirates club. Al Ahli played in last year s final but lost 1-0 on aggregate to China s Guangzhou Evergrande. Aside from their 4-1 loss to Jeonbuk in the 2004 quarter-finals, they have made only one other AFC Champions League visit to Korea Republic, losing 3-0 at FC Seoul in the 2011 group stage. They have yet to win an AFC Champions League match in east Asia. In addition to their defeats in South Korea, they also drew 0-0 at Chinese sides Shenzhen Jianlibao in 2005 and Hangzhou Greentown in 2011 and were trounced 4-0 in Japan by Nagoya Grampus in After losing their first two games in this season s tournament to El Jaish, Al Ain have gone unbeaten in their last 10 matches, winning six games and drawing four. In their last five away games in the competition, they have won three games and drawn two including a 2-2 stalemate at El Jaish of Qatar in the semi-finals. Players None of the current players in the Al Ain squad were playing for the team when they last reached the AFC Champions League final in Midfielder Omar Abdulrahman is a nominee for the AFC Player of the Year award after some sparkling performances for Al Ain in the AFC Champions League. The 25- year-old has scored three goals in the tournament and been named Player of the Match in eight of Al Ain s 12 games. The Al Ain captain scored in the 2-2 draw at El Jaish in the second leg of the semifinals along with his brother Mohamed Abdulrahman, whose stoppage-time equaliser was his first goal in the competition since a 5-0 win over Lekhwiya in April Brazilian forward Douglas is the club s leading scorer and the fourth-highest scorer in the competition with five goals. He joined the club at the start of 2016 after helping Japanese side Sanfrecce Hiroshima win the J1 League title and finish third at the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup. Korea Republic international midfielder Lee Myung-joo will be on familiar ground, having previously played against Jeonbuk for Pohang Steelers in the K League. He also made his international debut in June 2013 when the national team was managed by current Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee. Domestic form Al Ain have made an unbeaten start to the new UAE Arabian Gulf League season, winning four and drawing one of their first five games including a 2-1 victory over Al Shabab in their most recent match on 3 November. They are in fourth place with 13 points, two behind leaders Al Wasl but with a game in hand.

9 Team coach profiles Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Choi Kang-hee Since he was first appointed as head coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2005, former Korea Republic international defender Choi Kang-hee has enjoyed a glittering career with the club, winning the Korean FA Cup in his first season, the AFC Champions League in 2006 and four K League Classic championships. The 57-year-old became head coach of Korea Republic in late 2011 and guided the Taeguk Warriors to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals before he returned to his former position at Jeonbuk in Al Ain Zlatko Dalic A former midfielder, Zlatko Dalic began his coaching career in 2005 and after spells at clubs in his native Croatia and Albania, the 50-year-old moved to Saudi Arabia in 2010 to take charge of newly-promoted Al Faisaly. The Croatian helped the unfancied side to qualify for the King s Cup and was chosen as the league s best coach in the season. He led Al Hilal to victory in the Saudi Crown Prince Cup in 2013 before moving to Al Ain the following year and coaching them to the UAE league title in 2015.

11 Al Ain Al Ain entered the history books in 2003 when they won the inaugural AFC Champions League with a 2-1 aggregate victory over BEC Tero Sasana of Thailand in the final. The Emirati club also finished runners-up in 2005 and reached the semi-finals in 2014 but they went out on in the round of 16 on away goals to UAE league rivals Al Ahli last year. 13 Competition facts In 2002, the Asian Club Championship was merged with the Asian Cup Winners Cup to form the AFC Champions League. The inaugural final was won by Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates, who beat Thailand s BEC Tero Sasana 2-1 on aggregate. Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia were the first team to win the AFC Champions League twice. They were victorious in 2004 after beating Korean side Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 6-3 on aggregate and retained the trophy with a 5-3 aggregate victory over Al Ain a year later. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of Korea Republic became the first east Asian side to win the competition in 2006 after they beat Al Karamah of Syria 3-2 on aggregate in the final. Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan took the title the following year when they beat Iranian side Sepahan 3-1 on aggregate in the final. The J.League side did not lose a game during their run to their title, winning five matches and drawing the other seven. Gamba Osaka were also unbeaten when they claimed the AFC Champions League title in The Japanese club won nine of their 12 games, including all six of their away matches, and thumped Adelaide United of Australia 5-0 on aggregate in the final. Korea Republic s Pohang Steelers became the first team to win both the Asian Club Championship and AFC Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Al Ittihad in the 2009 final in Tokyo. Having won back-to-back Asian Club Championships in 1997 and 1998, they also became the first club to be crowned Asian champions on three occasions. Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma became the second team to win both titles when they beat Zobahan of Iran 3-1 in Tokyo in The Korean club won the 1995 Asian Club Championship when the club was known as Ilhwa Chunma. The 2011 AFC Champions League final was the first to go to extra-time and penalties as Qatar s Al Sadd beat Jeonbuk Motors in a shootout after a 2-2 draw in Jeonju. Ulsan Hyundai became the third Korean club in four years to lift the AFC Champions League trophy with a 3-0 win over Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia in In winning the championship, they set a new tournament record with nine consecutive victories. The final reverted to two legs in 2013 with Guangzhou Evergrande becoming the first Chinese club to lift the trophy after they edged FC Seoul on away goals following a 2-2 draw in Korea and a 1-1 draw in China. Western Sydney Wanderers became the first Australian club to win the tournament in 2014 with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the final. The 0-0 draw in the second leg in Riyadh was the first match in the final to end goalless. The organisation was founded on 8 May 1954 in Manila and is one of FIFA s six continental confederations. The headquarters is at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the President is Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain. The AFC organised the first continental championship the Asian Cup in 1956, and introduced the first continental club competition the Asian Club Championship in In 1990, they introduced the Asian Cup Winners Cup, and in 1995, the winners of the Asian Club Championship and Asian Cup Winners Cup began to meet annually in the Asian Super Cup. In 2002, all three club competitions were merged into the AFC Champions League, which featured domestic league and cup winners from throughout Asia. More than 40 teams took part in the inaugural tournament but the format was streamlined in 2004 to include the defending champions and 28 other teams from 14 countries. The competition was revamped in 2009 as the group stage was expanded to 32 teams, a round of 16 was added and the final became a single championship game. However, the format was tweaked again in 2013 with the final reverting to two legs.
