Soccer Skills Passing & Trapping CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the soccer skills of passing and trapping used in the game of speedball: Sole of Foot Trap: o Alignment of player should be positioned near to a direct line (180 degrees) w/ the path of the ball. o The grounded foot supports body weight as the contact leg is raised w/ the sole facing the ball. o Ankle of contact foot is flexed (90 degrees) w/ toe up, providing a wedge for ball contact. Contact leg is extended in front of body. Support leg should have slight flexion in knee. Hips and shoulders should be near 90 degrees to approaching ball. o The ball at contact is cushioned by slightly flexing the knee of the contact leg and the support leg. Ball contact should be made on the top and slightly to the rear by the sole of the foot. Inside of Foot Pass: o The player should quickly position near the direct flight (180 degrees) of the ball. o The grounded foot should be placed toward target and positioned to the side of the ball (approx inches, and even with or slightly behind the ball depending on intended flight of the ball. o The contact foot is raised w/ toe pointed out, knee pointed out, and ankle locked at 90 degrees. Leg is drawn backward from the hip in a straight line. The contact leg is then raised to the rear, bending the knee until the lower leg is close to parallel with the ground, with the inside portion of the foot facing the ground. o Head should be positioned above the ball (to keep it low) or behind the ball (to lift it). Hips and shoulders should be near 90 degrees to approaching ball, with a pivot out as contact leg is drawn back. 1. Continuous One- Touch Pass Drill - Purpose: To improve on quick passing skills used to advance the ball. Description: Two lines of 2 or more players, about 10 yards apart, are opposite and about 10 yards from two other lines of players. The first player in one line has a soccer ball. The player w/ the ball makes a ground pass to the first player in the line opposite him and goes to the end of that line. The player receiving the ball makes a one- touch pass to the first player in the diagonal opposite line and goes to the end of that line. This routine is repeated until an error is made, after which the player making the error restarts the routine. Count the number of consecutive passes. 10yds 2. Passing Through Defense Drill- Purpose: To work on efficiency and quickness in passing with a defender. Description: Three offensive players position themselves in a triangle about yards apart. One defensive player is within the triangle formed by the offensive players. The offensive players pass the ball among themselves and score a point if a thru pass (to a player diagonally across) is completed. The defensive player scores a point each time they intercept the ball. O 10-15yds D O O 4

5 II. Soccer Skills Passing & Trapping continued.. 3. Additional Drill: - Purpose: To improve trapping and quick, sharp passing skills. Description: o 1. Stagger five cones in a zigzag formation about 10 yards apart. o 2. Place a player (x) at each cone. The player on the end closest to the sideline will start with the ball. o 3. Have one player kick the ball diagonally to another player waiting at one of the cones. That player will trap the ball with the inside of the foot and prepare it to be passed diagonally to another player at the next cone. After each pass, the passer sprints toward the player he passed to and takes their spot at the cone. o o 4. Trap the ball and prepare to pass to the next player at the next cone. Pass the ball and sprint to the cone after the pass. 5. Keep passing the ball until the last person at the last cone receives it. Soccer Skills -Dribbling CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering dribbling (w/ inside of foot) used in the game of speedball: The body is directly behind the ball prior to contact and should be in continuous run mode, making repetitive contacts with either foot. The grounded foot is behind and to the inside of the ball while the other foot is slightly off the ground for contact. The contact surface (inside of foot) can provide either force or absorption, depending on how close to the body the player wants to keep the ball. Contacting high on the ball takes away force and keeps ball close, contacting near the middle applies force forward, and contacting low on the ball lifts the ball (not good for dribble). The toe of the contact foot is pointed out; knee out, foot slightly off the ground and sole parallel to ground.. The player should do repetitive taps to propel the ball along the ground in a controlled fashion. 1. Change Direction Drill- Purpose: To improve agility, trapping ability, and control while dribbling the soccer ball. Description: Each player has a soccer ball. They will dribble in a general area. When the coach yells, Change, the players will quickly change the direction of the dribble. Coach - Change 2. Zig Zag Dribble Drill - Purpose: To improve speed and control while dribbling the soccer ball. Description: Each team will line up on the sideline or end line facing a line of cones, spaced out approximately 5 feet from each other. The players will dribble in and out of the cones, controlling the ball, and looking up as much as possible. As soon as one player goes up and back (around all cones), the next player in line will start. This drill can be made into a relay or team competition. Diagram: 3. Additional Drill: Red Light, Green Light Dribbling Drill - Purpose: To work on speed and control in dribbling the soccer ball. Description: All players start on one side of the field/court with a ball. Coach (C) yells "Green Light" and turns her back to the players. Yell "Red Light" and then turn back around. All players should have moved forward and now be standing still with one foot on the ball. Any player still moving or without his or her ball, gets sent back to the starting line. 7 IV. Conversions 2 feet CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the two- foot aerial conversion in the game of speedball: Stand erect with the ball wedged evenly between the feet. Hop up, keeping the ball evenly wedged between the feet and lifting it higher toward the hands. In the air, lean forward, extending the arms and hands downward to grab the ball from the feet. Catch the ball and land on two feet with the converted aerial ball, ready to pass it. 1. Two- Foot Lift Drill - Purpose: To improve on the skill of converting a ground ball to an aerial ball in the game of speedball by using both feet. Description: Each player has a ball and will practice the two- foot lift drill with the teacher/coach looking on with positive feedback on their technique. 2. Two- Foot Lift Competition Drill- Purpose: To have students work on the two foot conversion while competing against their classmates. Description: Students will be lined up. The coach/teacher will time the students for 30 seconds or 1 minute. A classmate will count how many conversions the student makes in the designated time frame. 1, 2, 3 3. Additional Drill: - Two Player Kick- up Drill- Purpose: To improve two foot conversions while also working on partner passing. Description: Working in two s, one player uses the inside of the foot pass to deliver the ball to her/his partner approximately 10 yards away. After the receiving player has efficiently trapped the ball, he/she will quickly execute a kick- up. Once this has been accomplished, the ball is placed on the ground, and the drill is started in the other direction with the inside of the foot pass to the other player. Source: S 7

Conversions 1 foot CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the one- foot aerial conversion in the game of speedball: Stand erect with one foot extended in front of the body and the sole of that foot applying light pressure on the top of the ball. Apply more pressure on the top of the ball with the sole of the foot and roll the ball quickly toward the body. Place the toe of the foot rolling the ball under the rotating ball to lift it upward. Bend forward at the waist, extend the arms and hands downward, and lift the ball with the toe toward the hand. Catch the ball with two hands as it is lifted waist- high into the air, converting it to an aerial ball. 1. One- Foot Lift Drill - Purpose: To improve on the skill of converting a ground ball to an aerial ball in the game of speedball by using only one foot. Description: Each player has a ball and will practice the one- foot lift drill with the teacher/coach looking on with positive feedback on their technique. 2. One- Foot Lift Competition Drill - Purpose: To have students work on the one foot conversion while competing against their classmates. Description: Students will be lined up. The coach/teacher will time the students for 30 seconds or 1 minute. A classmate will count how many conversions the student makes in the designated time frame. 1, 2, Additional Drill: Enhancing On the Ball Skills to Maintain Possession: The Kick- Up - Purpose: To work on different techniques on converting the ball to yourself in speedball. Description: o With partner, have partner bounce ball and other partner has to kick ball up to hands. o Practice kick- ups with different body parts (e.g., feet, knees) o Practice kick- ups using balls that are rolling, balls off to the side, balls that are bouncing. 9 VI. Air Dribble CRITICAL ELEMENTS to mastering the air dribble in the game of speedball: Air dribble is to be used after a legal conversion of a ground ball or after receiving a pass. The ball can be thrown to oneself only one time each new possession. Consists of throwing the ball in the air and relocating to regain possession by catching it. On the air dribble, steps do not count while the ball is in the air. 1. Air Dribble Partner Drill - Purpose: To improve self- passes necessary to advance the ball. Description: In pairs, one partner offers defensive pressure (ex: hands in air, close proximity to player with the ball) while the player with the ball executes a 5- yard dribble. Each player takes turns completing 10 air dribbles. 2. Air Dribble Team Competition - Purpose: To work on the air dribble technique and passing in the full court/field setting. Description: o Ball must start as a ground ball. Kick of by converting an aerial ball to a teammate (because it is illegal to convert to oneself on kick- off). o Air dribble counts as one of ten passes. o Full court game. Scoring is done by completing 10 consecutive passes. o After each score, restart the game with a kick- off. o Play 10- minute games. 3. Additional Drill: Can't Touch This (Maintain Possession/ Get Possession) - Purpose: To work on movement without the ball, passing, and utilizing air dribble when needed. Description: o Play 4 vs. 4 o Play inside a 10 m x 10 m grid o Start off playing by throwing and catching o Can't move when you have the ball o If get 5 passes in a row score 1 point o Cannot grab ball from someone s hands Source: 10 m 10m O O O O 9
