2 BRIDGE OVERSEAS BUDAPEST CONGRESS A warm welcome to you all, from the English Bridge Union, to the Budapest Congress sponsored by Bridge Overseas. We hope that you will enjoy our choice of the Hilton Hotel. In order to help you enjoy your stay in Budapest you are invited to a welcome meeting in the Ballroom at 10.30am on Friday 2nd February. You will be able to meet all the people concerned with the running of the event. Bridge Overseas will be represented by Lindsey Downs and Hannah Williams, who will be able to help with any queries and be available to assist with the booking of excursions. 4 MASTER POINTS All Master Points will be awarded by direct credit but may take some weeks to show up on your account. Ranking lists are available from our web site at Stratification Most events will be stratified Stratification levels for pairs events are as follows: A : at least one member of the partnership is a Premier Life Master or above B : at least one member of the partnership is a Premier Regional Master or above and neither is a Premier Life Master or above. C : neither member of the partnership is a Premier Regional Master or above. For teams: A : at least two members of the team are Premier Life Masters, or any player is a Grand Master or above (or is in the Gold Point top 60, or has NGS grade Ace ). B : at least two members of the team are Premier Regional/National/Premier National/Life Masters and no more than one is a Premier Life Master. C : no more than one player is of the rank Premier Regional / National / Premier National / Life Master, and in any case no single player is a Premier Life Master or above. Ranks are based on points earned, regardless of whether registered or not, on the first day of play. Overseas visitors with Master Point records held outside of the UK are normally obliged to be category A. Master Point awards Master Point awards for the swiss pairs and swiss teams are quoted for the overall A + B + C stratification ranking list only. The top award and minimum award on the B + C list is 50%, and the C list is 25% of that quoted for the overall list. Swiss Pairs 0.28 Green Point per 8-board match won (0.14 for a draw) Bonus Green Point ranking awards to the top quarter of the field with a top award of 4.00 Green Points and a minimum award of 0.50 Green Point. Intermediate awards in accordance with the standard EBU formula.

Intermediate awards in accordance with the standard EBU formula. Other events All other single-session events will be Blue Pointed at national scale. The pairs events will be stratified. The pivot teams is not stratified. PRIZES & TROPHIES The winners of each tournament will receive a permanent trophy. Prizes as outlined below will be credited to the player s account and are quoted in terms of per pair or per team, as appropriate. The actual prize values quoted are based on a certain anticipated entry to each event. Variations may be made should the final entry be other than as expected, in which case an appropriate announcement would be made before the halfway stage of the competition concerned. Swiss Pairs Prizes to sixth place as follows: 1st 140, 2nd 100, 3rd 80, 4th 60, 5th 50, 6th 40; with a further prize of 40 for the top pair in each of the B & C stratification categories. Swiss Teams Prizes to third place as follows: 1st 200, 2nd 120, 3rd 80; with a further prize of 40 for the top team in each of the B & C stratification categories. Pivot Teams This event will be played and scored in sections. All section winners receive 60 per team. If there is more than one section, the overall winner (largest plus score across all sections) will receive a further 60, making a first prize of 120 in total. Other pairs events Prizes to approximately one pair in sixteen, ranging from 50 to 80 for the winning pair (depending on the size of the event), down to 30 for the last prize receiving position. Example: 25+ table event: 1 st 80, 2 nd 60, 3 rd 40, 4 th table event: 1 st 70; 2 nd 50; 3 rd table event: 1 st 60; 2 nd 40. Up to 8 tables: 1 st 50.

6 GENERAL CONDITIONS You are required to have a pair of identical completed convention cards and you should exchange them with your opponents at the start of each round. If you do not have two completed system cards, you will be provided with blank system cards to fill out before play may continue, receiving a score of average minus for any boards unplayed due to the time lost in doing this. WBF convention cards are only permitted in EBU Level 5 events. General EBU regulations apply throughout, for example, with regard to bidding boxes, split ties, smoking etc. Full details are available on request. The programme, and format of the events, can be changed by the Chief Tournament Director if the number of tables makes such changes necessary. In the swiss events, re-matches will be allowed from the third session. The Pivot Teams is a multiple teams event played in sections, in which you will partner any two of your three team mates in turn for approximately twelve boards (i.e. a "partial" pivot rather than a "full" pivot). There is no particular requirement regarding male and female players (some pivot events are for mixed teams only). Best Behaviour at Bridge - please be nice to your partner, be pleasant to your opponents and be polite to the Tournament Directors. Otherwise you may well be given a Disciplinary Penalty! Please switch off your mobile phone. If you must have it on for emergencies, switch it to silent and leave the playing area before answering. You may not use any electronic equipment within the playing room. You may not use electronic cigarettes in the playing room. Bridgemates North (or South) is responsible for entering the contract and result into the Bridgemate, and East (or West) must be shown it to verify its accuracy by pressing the Accept button. It is best to enter the contract, declarer and lead at the end of the auction this saves time, reduces the risk of entering the wrong board number, and ensures the lead is fresh in your mind. Entering the lead accurately not only provides extra information of interest to players, but can also assist the scorer in resolving errors of data-entry. It is an offence to attempt to access the TD screen or change a score in the Bridgemate without calling the TD. Bridgemate UK is the EBU s Official Wireless Scoring Provider.

7 Budapest Excursions The following tours will be available to book at the welcome meeting: Saturday 3 rd Budapest City Tour 9.00am 11.30am An exclusive private sightseeing tour from the hotel. Get an insight into the history and culture with a local expert. Attractions covered include Matthias Church, Citadel (photo stop), Liberty Bridge, Grand Market Hall (short stop), Synagogue, Andrassy Avenue, Hungarian State Opera House, House of Terror, Heroes Square (photo stop), Grand Boulevard, Western Railway Station (designed by Eifel), St Stephen s Basilica, Chain Bridge and the Café Gerbeaud. Sunday 4 th Morning Tour to Szentendre An exclusive 4-hour tour to Szentendre. This picturesque baroque town is situated along the Danube River bank in Pest county and is famous for its Artists Colony as well as the multi national and multi religious village life. The calm provincial life of the city has attracted artists since the beginning of the 20 th century. The Szentendre colony or artists came into existence in 1929 and was the foundation for the so called Szentendre School. Today, more than two hundred fine and applied artists, authors, poets, musicians and actors live in the city. Attractions covered include: Greek Orthodox Blagovestenska Church, the House of Prisoner Raby (Rab Raby Haz), the Szentendre Gallery, the 18 th century Baroque townscape and the Main Square.

8 Monday 5 th Full day tour to the Eger Wine Region. A guided coach tour to Eger. The city of Eger is famous for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, Ottoman minaret dishes and red wines. The visit includes the castle and the city with a short walking tour. Lunch will be taken at the Bolyki winery: three courses and three glasses of wine, mineral water and tea or coffee. During the walking tour there will be a warm up stop for Palinka tasting and a choice of teas. Wednesday 7 th An evening at Matyas Pince A traditional Hungarian Restaurant with live music and folklore show, featuring the gypsy music of Vilmos Lakatos and his band. The restaurant is a homage to the most famous Hungarian Renaissance King, Matysa Hunyadi and features frescoes and lead glass windows representing scenes from the King s life by Jeno Haranghy and Gyula Bozo created in The artistic value of this work led to the restaurant being declared a protected building in 1973.
