Game Reschedules Head coaches of multiple teams have schedules deconflicted Ability to reschedule games very difficult due to variables (calendar, field availability, refs, etc.) Reschedule procedure Requesting coach contacts opposing coach to determine preferred date/time Requesting coach submits info to office via online procedure Office attempts to reschedule Office notifies both coaches of result
Games Pre-Game Uniforms: Home wears Red Greet Referees and Opposing Coach Encourage families to arrive at least 20 minutes before kickoff Warm-ups: avoid using goal area and penalty area when possible (preserve field)
Games - Touchlines Teams occupy one touchline; parents across from team on opposite touchline Coaches Remain in Technical Area Between midfield and top of penalty arc Spectators 3 yds back from touchline No one allowed even with Penalty Area or behind goals COACHES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE FIELD DURING THE GAME
Games Playing Time Min half-game for players attending 1 practice that week Use common sense to avoid punishing players for events out of their control E.G. Absent for 1st practice, and 2nd practice is canceled due to weather Reach out to family first Grades 3-4: No one plays all 4 quarters unless all others play 3 Substitutions made in between quarters. Grades 5-6: Substitutions made at specific stoppages Line-up Matrix document available online.
Games Player Positions Rotate players into different positions Throughout game Throughout season Goalkeeper Rotation: Grades 3-4: no more than one quarter per game in goal; must also play 2 quarters on field Grades 5-6: no more than one half per game; should also play on field
Games Play Balance When one team is short a full starting line-up, the opposing team should: Loan players for that game (may rotate loaned players each quarter) preferred method Play down for even numbers (e.g. 8v8 instead of 9v9) as long as opposing team meets min play time standards
Games Modified Rules Game Format: Grades 3-4: 7v7, four 10-minute quarters, build out lines Grade 5: 9v9, two 25-minute halves Grade 6: 9v9, two 30-minute halves Throw-ins: Grade 3: two chances Grades 4-6: one chance Slide tackling Grades 1-6: no slide tackling permitted
Games Modified Rules No heading: 11U (Grade 5) and younger Intentional: indirect free kick Unintentional: drop ball Offside Law Enforced at build out line Grades 3-4 Enforced at midfield line Grades 5-6
Games Modified Rules Competitive Balance Rule & Managing Lopsided Scores Grades 1-6: down by 4 +1 player Grades 7-8: none but do not run up score If winning by large amount: rearrange positions play less developed players more or in attacking roles add conditions (e.g. must connect 5 passes before scoring).
Games Post Game Good Game handshake line Thank the referee(s) players and coaches Clean bench areas, clear area for next game No score reporting (standings not published)
Games Sideline Behavior Positive role models for all (players and parents) Coach is responsible for team & fan conduct No confrontations with others (parents, coaches, refs, etc.) Keep cool and walk away Report knuckleheads to us Remember: It s for the Kids! It should be fun!
Games Abridged Rules These rules and reminders are available in a 2-page Doc Also Found at Coaches Info Center Print and bring to your game each week Please review Rec Policies page online
Referees Independent of Loudoun Soccer Severe shortage of referees (both quantity and quality) local and nationwide Many will be young (14-17 years old) with 1 or fewer seasons of experience Some will be good, others not-so-much They are learning just like the players Others will have loads of experience but not move too well.
Referees They interpret the Laws of the Game Interpretations vary from ref to ref and from game to game Goal is for interpretations to be consistent They are human mistakes are made. If it happens in the World Cup, it ll happen on Saturday morning with us. Referee = the Boss of the game The Boss is in Charge! Even if they re 13 years old.
Referees Dissent = any questioning of referee s authority Dissent can result in ejection from match Focusing on Refs = Loss of focus on your players Teaches players to focus on the uncontrollable Violates our Core Values ZERO TOLERANCE toward referee abuse (verbal) and assault (physical) Serious concerns about an official: details to refdirector@loudounsoccer.com
Referees Referees are assigned to matches 1 ref per Grades refs per game Grades 5-6 Sometimes referees don t show Last minute conflict (many also play) Life happens (car trouble, illness, etc.) If a referee does not show: Get the game played (e.g. coaches alternate quarters reffing, find a parent or sibling, etc.) Notify us of the referee absence
Remember!!! Live our Values Fun! It s why we play Integrity Character and Principled Fairness Sportsmanship and Inclusiveness Teamwork Stronger Together Stewardship of the Game and the Community Rep the Red
