ErdingTON and Saltley District Good morning everyone! I hope you ve all had a great first week at school! So it s here. The big weekend. The huge weekend. Game time! The Ton and Villa competing in two huge games! After a long, enjoyable season, the end is in sight. Today s game represents the culmination of an incredibly close season. Whatever happens today, everyone associated with both Kings Norton and Erdington and Saltley should be immensely proud of their efforts. Kings Norton have won the West Midlands 7 a side, whilst The Ton have won the Birmingham 6 a side and the Midland Challenge Shield. It s fitting that the final league game of the year should be between the two best teams from this season. In terms of The Ton, it s been a season of immense pride and joy. Many people ask me why I volunteer my time to run the district, but they don t understand how enjoyable it is to do so! To work with this set of lads each week has been a privilege. It s the best part of the week! This year s team has the best spirit and greatest sense of camaraderie of all the district teams that I ve been fortunate enough to be associated with. That s what makes it so much fun every week. That and watching Lamar struggle every week when setting the goals up! That s why I ve got my fingers crossed for today!

Parents Quiet Please - Does your boss stand menacingly near your desk shouting at you when you're doing your job? If he does, do you enjoy it, feel inspired, creative and ready to perform at your best? No, thought not. With this in mind, I'd dearly love it if you could refrain from roaring from the sidelines at little Billy when he's trying to have fun with his friends. He's only ten. It really doesn't help. Ask him if you don't believe me. The same goes for the ref too! He might be older than ten but he feels just the same when shouted and screamed at! There aren t many refs left out there and if they re all scared off, who is going to ref our games? We re Volunteers - When we re not doing our jobs yes, coaching is but a (mostly) joyful hobby for us we are simply willing, unpaid volunteers at an increasingly hardpressed schools football district committed to giving children of our 45 schools the chance to play. Please don t put us under any pressure and be gentle! A Valuable Lesson - Why on Earth did you play him there? He can't play there. He's not a defender. He's a forward; he only wants to play as a striker; he'll get you 30 goals a season from there. But he's only ten years old. Your son's clearly good at maths too I suppose it's all that counting practice keeping track of his goals tally but would you instruct the teachers in his primary school to excuse him from literacy lessons so he can focus on becoming a mathematician instead? No, so give him a chance to breathe, let him develop new skills and you'll be surprised at how good he can become. We really want him to be successful too. A winner, yes. But not just in an under 11s match. We re trying to provide the players with the full range of skills necessary to win when they're 15, 18 and 21. Mistakes are learning opportunities - We genuinely believe we can be the living embodiment of this. Yes, you and us. Parents & Coach United. We'll both make mistakes along the way. Even me. Even you, honest. But imagine the impact we could have together if all parents trusted the coach, backed him up and reassured your child by simply saying to them after a match: I loved watching you play. It was great fun. This would allow them to move on from mistakes and bask in the warm, character-enhancing glow brought about by riding on the physically, technically, socially and psychologically challenging rollercoaster that is playing a competitive team sport. Together we could create an environment for them to succeed unencumbered by a crippling fear of failure.

Our Last Under 11s Game The Ton Progress to Semi-finals Saturday 11th April Braemar Road Erdington and Saltley 6 0 Derby Team: Harvey, Sam, Shaun, Teon, Kruize, Jermaine, Tyrese, Shilo, Troy, Cameron and Hayden Goals: Shilo x 4, Troy and Kruize For the second game in a row The Ton went goal crazy, whilst ensuring that Harvey s last minute dash from America was worth the trip with a clean sheet for the keeper. With the sun shining and a crisp breeze in the Air, we welcomed Derby Primary Schools to Braemar for the quarter final of the Burton Shield (West Midlands Schools FA Cup). The game started with The Ton going on the attack immediately from the first whistle. The boys looked bright and energetic, looking to attack at every opportunity. They certainly didn t resemble a team who were playing their first game in three weeks. The opening goal was converted by Shilo following a quick Tyrese free kick which was lofted over the defence from left of the centre circle, before Shilo brought the ball down out of the air and smashed it home. It was no less than we deserved and the lads didn t look back once from that moment on. Next up was twinkle toes Troy who slotted the ball away expertly after some great work down the right from Shilo. Troy could have had two, only to be flagged offside (correctly) when through on goal (Shilo also had a goal disallowed for straying offside). Not to be perturbed, the lads continued to plug away and Jermaine in particular was having fun down the right hand side of the pitch. However it was from the left hand side that our third goal came, with Kruize cutting in and holding his marker off, before scoring his 12th goal of a great campaign.

During half time the wind decided to pick up and the lads knew they would have to increase their workload, especially faced with the task of playing uphill. Nevertheless Derby started the second half the better of the two teams, and were on top of the game during the first five minutes of the second period. The Ton weathered the storm though and slowly but surely started to retake control of the game, with the back three of Shaun, Sam and Hayden providing the rest of the team with a solid foundation upon which to build their attacks. The fourth goal (and fifth and sixth!) came from the boot of Shilo, with the St. Matthew s forward securing his second hat-trick in two games (and 9th goal in two games!). I m not sure of the exact nature of his three second half goals, other than the fact that he worked his socks off for each and every one of them, although I do know that he rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net for one of them, after being played through by Teon. Gunter pupil Cameron was playing out of his normal striking position on the right wing, attacking and defending with equal gusto and energy. However his efforts couldn t lead to a seventh goal, despite several moments of excitement being delivered up for the onlooking Ton Army. Despite Derby s best efforts and refusal to never give up, Harvey had a relatively quiet day in goal and will be pleased with his clean sheet after stepping off the plane a matter of hours before the game! Now that is commitment. Another special mention should be reserved for Tyrese who bagged himself a hat-trick of assists! No report of today s game would be complete without mentioning Shaun (Biggy). Without discussing what we already know, the Slade pupil should be immensely proud of his efforts today. Well done kid! Next up in the Burton Shield is Brierley Hill and Dudley. We ll lock horns with our rivals from the Black Country for a place in the final over the next few weeks! Before that there s the small matter of the league to decide. Man of the Match on any other week it would have been hard to have given it to anyone other than Shilo, after he scored four goals. However today it has to go to Biggy. Enough said. Up The Ton!

Before Easter The Ton win derby game vs. Sutton Wednesday 25th March Heartlands Erdington and Saltley 6 3 Sutton Coldfield Team: Harvey, Brandon, Shaun, Teon, Kye, Sam, Tyrese, Marc, Kruize, Troy, Shilo, Jermaine and Hayden Goals: Shilo x 5 and Marc Under the lights of Heartlands Academy, The Ton took on Sutton Coldfield, as a busy end of season kicked off. With poor weather causing the postponement of a number of games earlier in the season, it s now a case of trying to fit the games in whenever possible. However, despite playing for the district on Saturday and their academies/sunday league teams the following day, the lads looked fresh and energized as the game kicked off. Despite showing our attacking intent from the very beginning, we found ourselves 1-0 down through a well worked Sutton corner. Never the less, there was a real determination to the lads play, and they leveled the game at 1-1 thanks to a Shilo goal. Allowing the ball to run through his legs, the St. Matthew s striker spun around and burst through the Sutton defence before rifling home powerfully. Yet The Ton couldn t hold on to the lead and Sutton retook the lead following some uncharacteristically hesitant play in the Ton defense. Refusing to lie down, the boys bounced back again thanks to another strong Shilo run and powerful finish. 2-2, game on! This time The Ton pushed on and took the lead for the first time in the match, thanks to Shilo s hat-trick goal and by far the best of his five finishes. Following a Sutton foul 20 yards out from goal, Shilo took responsibility for the direct free kick. Curling the ball high to the keeper s right, it nestled perfectly into the top left hand corner. Perfect, Truly sensational. Not to be undone, Marc got in on the act courtesy of a brilliant left footed long distance strike.

The second half started exactly how the first had finished, with The Ton attacking at every opportunity. Two more Shilo goals came in quick succession and we found ourselves 6-2 up with 20 minutes to play. However that s where the goals stopped, although it wasn t for our lack of attacking intent. On another day I don t think it s an exaggeration to say we would have scored a few more goals. Huge respect must go to the Sutton lads who refused to drop their heads and continued to play football that was pleasing on the eye. With a minute to go, they got their reward when they scored to make it 6-3 on the night. Well then boys, that s all you can do for now. We asked you to attack and you did just that! We re genuinely proud of you and couldn t have asked for more. Every single player contributed to this result. You were amazing and have been amazing all season. We ve watched you grow as a group and it s been an honour to manage/coach you this season. All we can do now is sit back and wait until we meet Kings Norton in a few week. Proud! Man of the Match: Shilo five goals and a great return to form for the captain. Up The Ton! 8 The Under 10s Come of Age Under 10s Beat Harborne Under 11s in Easter Holidays Game Tuesday 31st March Four Dwellings Academy Harborne 3 4 Erdington and Saltley u10s Team: Alex, Sam, Harvey, Tion, Kye, Kane, Shaun, Samim, Cameron and Kian Goals: Kane x 2, Cameron and Samim After being left in limbo all day by the unpredictable nature of the British weather, we decided to play on with the game, although the torrential downpour that welcomed us had us all questioning our decision. However it did give us a laugh at the sight of Tonn fighting with his umbrella! After the clouds parted and blue sky came out to play, it was decided to play 10 a side in order to involve everyone, without anyone having to stand on the side and freeze, or worse, get blown away. In hindsight it was a few players too many, with space at a premium. However, that in itself posed the boys with a problem from which they could learn. It meant they had to be quick with their decision making and look to pass the ball rather than dribbling with it. No sooner had the game started, than The Ton found themselves two goals up. This would normally be an astonishing start to any game, but even more so considering the opposition were a district team, and an under 11s team at that! The goals came courtesy of Kane and Samim, with the former at the heart of both. First dropping his shoulder and jinking past a couple of defenders, before slotting Samim through to finish cooly. Then finishing superbly himself from a tight angle. The Hodge Hill captain was on fire, as were his whole team, who tackled with tenacity and refused to be bullied by their older opponents. It was great to see the manner in which they backed one another up time and time again. It was great to see the way that no player was over awed don t forget we had an under 9s player doing the business in there too! Well done Kian!

With Alex stepping in between the posts superbly (welcome back kid!), we entered half time with a 2-1 lead (although my memory was frozen, so it could have been 3-1 or 3-2 for all I know!). Dropping it down to 8 a side, we told the lads to make the most of the extra space, whilst ensuring that they close Harborne down in the same fashion that they did during the first half. The second half was equally pleasing, with The Ton creating another 6 or 7 clear goal scoring opportunities. It was great to see them attack at every opportunity, although they did so safe in the knowledge that Sam was marshaling the defence at the back, ably supported by Tion or Harvey. Further goals came from the boot of Kane and Cameron, who expertly finished, shooting across the keeper and into the bottom corner. Only for the agile shot stopping of the Harborne keeper, we would have scored more, with a couple of direct Kane free-kicks coming to mind. Overall it was a great performance and result. The conditions were tricky to say the least and the boys had to adapt to the conditions and restraints posed by the game, doing so with aplomb. Tonn, Lamar and I were talking after the game about how proud we were with the way that the lads stepped up to the challenge. It s one thing taking on talented Sunday league teams, but an altogether different thing taking on an under 11s district team. You gave us everything that we asked for, and more! Couldn t be prouder of every single one of you! Well done boys! Man of the Match Kane for his commanding central midfield display, closely followed by Sam s rock like performance at the back. Up The Ton!

Your District Needs You! Last season it cost over 1000 to get the team from the first game to the last. The average cost of a home game is approximately 65. This includes the referees fee and the cost of using Braemar Road. The 45 primary schools in Erdington and Saltley contribute nothing. In order to ensure that Erdington and Saltley continues to have an under 11 district team, we have to beg, steal and borrow (although obviously we don t steal!). Below is a summary of how you or someone you know might be able to help. Sponsorship packages This is where Erdington and Saltley needs your help! There are a number of match programme sponsorship packages open to yourself or anyone that you know. These are: Package Cost What you get in return Match day programme advert half page a one off payment of 25 Your advert will appear in every home match day programme throughout the season. Match sponsor a one off payment of 15 A one off display of gratitude in the match day programme and you can even have immunity from having to run the line for that particular game! What a deal! All of the above packages also guarantee you a warm, fuzzy feeling in your tummy at the thought of supporting such a noble cause! If you or anyone that you know are interested in any of the above sponsorship packages, please don t hesitate to contact me.
