2 Mystery Airplane Contest By Kreg Anderson Welcome to the first edition of the monthly mystery airplane contest! Every month I will be posting a photo of an aircraft and it us up to YOU to guess what it is! Everything goes! Those who guess correctly will be acknowledged in the next month s column (sorry, I m in college and can t award prizes for all of you aircraft recognition wizards). You must guess the manufacturer and model correctly (Ex. Choosing Cessna for a Cessna 172 doesn t count). In honor of EAA AirVenture occurring in Oshkosh, WI this month (hint wink wink!) I have chosen an airplane that fits the bill perfectly. answers to eaa1342@gmail.com Oshkosh Tips: By Kreg Anderson Speaking of Oshkosh, I ve included a few (somewhat sarcastic) tips for all those who will be gracing the grounds of Wittman Regional Airport at the end of the month. Icon Aircraft have finally certified their A-5 for flight and are expected to take their first delivery during Oshkosh, after trying for the past 178 years. Due to this they should have quite the booth set up at Oshkosh, make sure to take advantage of free stuff! Cessna will most likely have at least one of their college-themed Top Hawks on display at their booth. Make sure to ask a Cessna representative what the difference is between a Top Hawk and a Skyhawk. Bring your bug spray: A de Havilland Mosquito will be on hand to help commemorate the 75 th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This year at Oshkosh you have the opportunity to get drunk on a plane. Dierks Bentley is performing the Monday night concert at Boeing Plaza. They say there s nothing quite like belting out country music lyrics while standing next to a B-29 with a beer in your hand. 2

3 This year commemorates the 70 th anniversary of Pitts Aircraft. Make sure you get all your S-1s, S-2s, S-3s, and S-4s straightened out before you look like a fool hanging out at the IAC pavilion. Prefer sea over land? Make sure you check out the EAA Seaplane base. There is a shuttle running back and forth between the airport and seaplane base, all week long. Be careful where you camp: it only takes a total of 50 feet for one of the Alaskan STOL guys to swoop in, steal your girl, and disappear again. The Ercoupes will be celebrating their 75 th anniversary this year, to celebrate go take one up for a spin. The legends will be back in full force for daily airshows this year. Keep your eye out for airshow greats Sean Tucker, Mike Goulian, Patty Wagstaff, Matt Younkin, Gene Soucy, and Sam Sammy Mason both in the air and on the grounds. o My personal favorites: Kyle Franklin and Greg Koontz for their routine, Jim Peitz for his choice of aircraft As I write this there s 30 days to go until Oshkosh begins, it s shaping up to be another great year I hope to see you all there! 3

4 Woman s Air Race Classic At the end of last month two of our chapter members, Tina Druskins and Jen Pinkowski, took part in the 39 th annual Air Race Classic. The race is an all-female event that sees nearly 50 aircraft race each year. The teams range from college universities to those just looking for a memorable experience that will challenge their aviating abilities. This year s race departed from Fredricksburg,VA, and culminated in Fairhope, AL. Race 39, piloted by Tina, Jen, and Carly Namihira, was a 2015 Cessna 172S. The team had meteorologist, and Chapter 1342 member, Fred Remer as their personal flight briefer. With the professional forecasting from Fred and some fantastic piloting by the girls, Race 39 finished 2 nd Overall this year! The team was honored at a banquet following the race, and each racer was awarded multiple prized for their outstanding performance. Congratulations girls! 4

5 July seems to be Amelia Earhart month as, this month celebrates her birthday on July 24, 1898 and famous disappearance on July 2, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were attempting an around-the-world flight when their Lockheed 10 Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Now, anyone with the slightest interest in aviation should know about Amelia and her disappearance. However, let s take a closer look at some aspects of Amelia Earhart and her life that aren t as prominent. For instance, did you know that Amelia was on the faculty at Purdue University s aviation department and Purdue helped fund her Electra and around-the-world trip? Amelia was brought onto the faculty to help counsel young women on why they should choose aviation as a career.something that we still need today! Amelia was elected the first president for the The Ninety-Nines (Stylized as 99 s), an international organization for women pilots and enthusiasts. The 99 s participate in a variety of activities with the intent of promoting women in aviation including women s air races, which date back to Women s air races are still around today through the non-profit group Air Race Classic, Inc. (Our own EAA chapter had multiple members participating in this year s race!) see above Amelia and Fred s ill-fated around-the-world flight was actually their 2 nd attempt at that flight. The original flight had them crossing the Pacific Ocean first, but after completing the first leg from Oakland, CA to Honolulu, HI the Electra suffered damage upon taking off out of Honolulu. There is still some debate as to whether Amelia groundlooped the plane during takeoff roll or if a tire blew during the roll. In 2014, a woman holding the same name as Amelia Earhart recreated the original Amelia s flight around the world in a Pilatus PC-12. Since then, Amelia Rose Earhart has left her job as a news anchor to focus fulltime on promoting women in aviation through various foundations. (we re already getting married so don t even try to steal her ) There are many, many conspiracy theories regarding the fate of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan to this day. Rather than describing them here I ll allow you to research them on your own during a rainy Friday night when you have nothing better to do. 5

6 Ken was introduced to aviation at a very young age. After tinkering with RC models and getting his first airplane ride in a Super Cub, Ken was hooked. After spending 25 years in the Air Force working with KC- 135/KC-10 air refueling tankers, Ken has enjoyed the recreational side of flying. Joining EAA has been on of Ken s most enjoyable aspects of aviation. A current builder of a Sonex, he mentions that he enjoys being a part of the local chapters and seeing all the homebuilt aircraft that are being built and completed.
