The Repository An independent journalistic documentary by Daria Bachmann, Anna Anderson and Crystal Grooms Mangano Press contact Daria Bachmann Anna Anderson
Tag line: As experts look for solution, the nation s nuclear waste keeps growing. Logline: As the U.S. government is trying to figure out what to do with the nation s growing nuclear waste, the opposition to the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository was designated 30 years ago in Nevada, has never been stronger.
Synopsis: In 1987, the U.S. Congress passed the so-called Screw Nevada bill that designated Yucca Mountain located 120 miles away from Las Vegas as the top site to store nuclear waste from across the country. For the last 30 years, the project has faced a strong opposition from Nevada officials and most residents of the state, while nuclear power interests and utility companies have been supportive of it. When the Obama administration at the urging of Nevada Sen. Harry Reid mothballed the proposed plan to entomb the nation s nuclear waste in a remote Nevada desert in 2010, the project was presumed dead. But after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission resumed the licensing proceeding of Yucca Mountain in 2013, some thought the project still has a pulse. Although proponents of Yucca Mountain call it safe and economically beneficial to the state of Nevada, many scientific, regulatory, and political challenges to Yucca Mountain still remain to this day. Meanwhile, over 70,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste continue to sit at the nuclear reactors across the nation, mostly east of the Mississippi River. Is Yucca Mountain a proper place to bury the nation s nuclear waste? And what s the future of the controversial project that s now back on the agenda at Capitol Hill with the new administration? This documentary aims to explain the conflicting views on the proposed repository and show the complex nature of the Yucca Mountain Project.
Goal: To tell the history of Yucca Mountain and explain the conflicting views on the proposed repository.
The team Daria Bachmann is a journalist based in Nevada and co-director of The Repository. She developed the idea for the documentary after writing extensively about Yucca Mountain. As part of the documentary, she interviewed numerous sources across the country, conducted deep research and shot some of the scenes and interviews. Anna Anderson is a New York-based documentary filmmaker and photographer. In 2014, she founded Like a Girl Productions, a production company aimed at providing female documentarians with a platform to create and distribute their work. She has since shot and edited two feature-length documentaries and a mini-series. Anna has a background in international business and marketing. Crystal Grooms Mangano is a Los Angeles-based music composer who has worked in a wide variety of television and film projects. Her music can most recently be heard in the documentary Asperger s Are Us, produced by Mark & Jay Duplass and directed by Alex Lehmann. Crystal also works as a music editor and music supervisor on several films and television shows.
