Chandler Creek Elementary Safety Patrol Handbook What is Safety Patrol? Eligibility Requirements Safety Patrol Code of Conduct General Information.. 3 Safety Patrol Duty Hours... 3 Duty Stations Safety Patrol Members SHOULD NOT 4 Safety of Other Students 5 Weather. 5 Questions or Concerns.5 What is Safety Patrol? Safety Patrol is a student organization dedicated to school leadership, student welfare and traffic safety. Safety Patrol members assist students in crossing the street, loading and unloading at carpool, and monitoring school doors or hallways. Eligibility Requirements In order to be a member of the Safety Patrol, a student must: be a good role model demonstrate leadership qualities maintain good citizenship grades (no office referrals) maintain passing grades maintain good attendance (few absences and tardies) be available for morning and afternoon Safety Patrol Duties* * In order to be an afternoon patrol, students must be a car rider. For their safety, students may not walk home after safety patrol, as no teacher or crossing guard is on duty. 1
Safety Patrol Code of Conduct Those students selected for the Safety Patrol must continue to meet eligibility requirements and follow school-wide rules and expectations at all times. Safety Patrol members must show respect to all adults, and other students, by using appropriate words and actions. Safety Patrol members must be responsible for completing schoolwork and maintaining passing grades. Safety Patrol members must resolve conflict in appropriate ways. Safety Patrol members must know and follow the rules of safety every day. Safety Patrol members must be at their post on time every day. Safety Patrol members must wear their vest and badge while on duty at all times. Safety Patrol members must take care of their equipment and return it to its proper storage area. Office Referrals: If a student receives an office referral during the year, a special meeting of the school principal, the teacher and Safety Patrol Sponsor will be called to determine whether student should continue to hold their position on Safety Patrol. 2
General Information Equipment: Each Safety Patrol member is assigned a vest and a rain jacket at the beginning of the year. Safety Patrols may keep their vest in their book bag or on their hook provided in the Safety Patrol room. Rain jackets should remain on student hooks in the patrol closet unless being worn. Safety Patrol vest MUST be worn while students are working as safety patrol. If a student does not have their vest, they may borrow an extra from the closet. Attendance: Captains will take attendance each morning as other members pick up their equipment and vests from the Safety Patrol closet. Flagpole: The flags will be raised every day unless it is raining. After all Safety Patrol members are at their morning stations, the Captains will raise the flag on the flagpole. They will bring it down during afternoon duty. The flags will need to be folded properly before returning them to the Safety Patrol closet. Clubs: Students are encouraged to participate in various clubs offered at Chandler Creek. However, club participation may affect the number of safety patrols available. If a club effects attendance at Safety Patrol, please talk to Mrs. Dodds. Safety Patrol Duty Hours You will receive a safety patrol schedule and duty station map prior to being on duty. Your three week rotation will begin on Monday morning and end on Friday afternoon. Please do not be late. Morning Patrol Duty Monday Friday 7:30 a.m.-8:10 a.m. Must be at school and at your station at 7:30 a.m. Afternoon Patrol Duty Monday Friday 2:25 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Must be picked up from school no later than 3:00p.m. Morning Duty: Make sure you are at your station by 7:30 a.m. You will remain at your station until the after the bell rings at 8:00 a.m. Return your equipment to the Safety Patrol room and return quietly to class. Afternoon Duty: Teachers will release students on safety patrol at 2:25 p.m., quietly pack up your homework and other items to go home in your backpack. Remember classes are still going on, so walk quietly to get your equipment and go to your station. Students should be picked up from safety patrol in the front car line by 3:00 p.m.. 3
Duty Stations Carpool Duty Stations: At carpool pick-up/drop-off areas, Safety Patrol members should open and close doors for students. If a student drops something, they will not be allowed to reach under the car to pick it up for any reason. Safety Patrol members will notify an adult if a student drops something. Members will remind students to stay on the sidewalk and head to the building. Safety Patrols may not walk around cars. If a student is seated on the driver s side, the parent or an adult must open the car door. Door Monitors and Hallway Duty Stations: The Safety Patrol members assigned to the doorways will open doors and greet students and adults as they enter the building in the mornings. In the afternoons, they will open doors and wish everyone a good afternoon. Hallway monitors quickly and politely escort students out of the hallways, either to class in the morning or out the doors in the afternoon. Captains: Each nine weeks, two captains (one for front and one for back carline) will be assigned. Captains should use the Safety Patrol Binder to record attendance for their area every morning and afternoon and report any students absent to Mrs. Dodds. After all Safety Patrol members are at their morning stations, the Captains will raise the flag on the flagpole. They will bring it down during afternoon duty. The flags will need to be folded properly before returning them to the safety patrol closet. Captains are chosen based on their effort during safety patrol. Safety Patrol Members SHOULD NOT: Walk around cars for any reason. Act disrespectful, bossy or threatening to other students to get them to follow rules. Socialize with friends while on duty. Use cell phones or other electronic devices while on duty. Play around or act silly with his/her safety equipment. 4
Safety of Other Students If Safety Patrol members see other students acting in an unsafe or disrespectful way, they should ask them nicely to stop and kindly remind them of the expectation. It is not the members place to discipline students. If the students refuse to follow the directions, or id they act disrespectful, or unsafe, please let the Safety Patrol Sponsor know immediately. He/she will handle the situation. If parents are there with children, they may cross along with the other kids, but parents do not have to follow Safety Patrol members instructions. Never argue with parents. If you ever see community members (adults or students not from the school) acting in an unsafe or disrespectful manner, or if you ever just feel unsafe while on patrol, please let the Safety Patrol Sponsor or an Administrator know immediately. Again, the safety of Patrol members and other students are the first concern. Weather On rainy days, Safety Patrol members will go outside for duty stations only in light rain. All these members will need to wear rain ponchos. Vests and badges should not be worn with ponchos. If there is any lightning or thunder, all outside duty stations will be suspended for that day. Inside duties will remain the same (hallways and doors). Check with the Safety Patrol Sponsor about duties during inclement weather. When the weather turns cold, all Safety Patrol members must dress properly: winter coats, hats/caps, gloves, scarves, and boots. If the temperature reaches freezing (32 F) as reported on Weather.com, all outside duty stations will be suspended for that day. Inside duties will remain the same (hallways and doors). Questions or Concerns? For questions or concerns about safety patrol, please contact Mrs. Dodds at or
