I want to thank Mark Keller for his many years of work as one of our WBE Superintendents. Mark is in that phase of life that Karlyn and I were in a few years ago between all the kids activities, the off-farm job, and the on-farm job, there is little time left for anything else, so he has chosen to resign his position. Mark s efforts, energy, organization, and balance have directly attributed to the growth of this show over the years. Whether you were an exhibitor or spectator at this event, please take the time to thank him - without his efforts we could not have enjoyed the benefits this show brought to our breeders over the years. Thanks also to Julie and Terry Willis Fall 2011 for their work in making the Belties first appearance in the WBE Elite Sale a success, and to all of the exhibitors and consignors. Without your participation our breed would not be represented at one of the Midwest s largest cattle expositions. Last but certainly not least, I want to thank Kathi Jurkowski for her tireless work in updating and manning our booth, and promoting our Association, and to GLBGA s board and other committee members, who often work behind the scenes to provide valuable opportunities for our members and promotion of the breed. I don t know about you but fall has come way too fast for me! Now that pasture growth has slowed way down hay feeding has started, which brings in another set of variables common to us in the north. President s Message Continued from page one We use large round bales that are net wrapped and stored outside due to inside building-space limitations. So every year we stack them in rows, keeping 1st crop separate from 2nd crop. Also, we have to put up temporary fence around the hay to keep you know who out. Next is maintenance on the hay feeders. We have three that are rotated around the pastures since we out feed during the winter, letting the cattle spread the manure themselves. As normal procedure around here goes when the ice and snow fall, sometimes the feeders The Annual General Meeting May 29, LaGrange, KY The meeting was called to order, followed by introduction of the Board Members present, and the other members present. The Secretary s Report was passed out for everyone to read. A motion was made and seconded to approve carried. Financial Review 2011 was done by Greg Hipple, and found to be in order. Treasurer Report was passed out for everyone to read. A motion was made and seconded to approve carried. Committee and Activity Reports: Advertising and Promotion: Great Lakes will have a center page ad in the National BYG Annual Magazine. Also an ad has been placed in the Country Today Breeder s Journal. Hats and T-shirts are for sale. We raised just under $500 at the Silent Auction held Sat. night. Sponsor Banner you can get your farm name on at the shows for $100, $50 or $25. This could be utilized more. Budget was handed out for everyone. Fundraising is a little behind last year, but we have not heard from National yet. Newsletter: We are looking for items, ideas, and articles. We need tidbits for Have Ya Herd. We wanted feedback on content and new layout. Perhaps all the show information will be on a separate insert in the summer newsletter. Forum: Is on the internet. It is free, but you need to be a current member of the Association to post information. Information posted can be read by anyone. Shows and Sales: Land of Lincoln show - canceled. Midwest Classic all set. You can come in the night before. The food stand is coming in no breakfast this time. An artist will be doing something special at the show this year. We are shooting for 50 head. Deadline is June 15. World Beef Expo WBE will be providing the awards for champions. They will also provide the judge. A Sale will be available. We need 10 head minimum. The animals must be broke to lead to be in the auction. The auction is Saturday. Our show is also on Saturday. Wisconsin Farm Tech Days: July 12-14, at Marshfield WI. Etheridge s will bring in their cattle, and promotional materials thousand people a day come through the tents to view the exhibits. Old Business: none New Business: Jon Bednarski will become National President and wants to make the National Newsletter more personable. He would like to visit one to two farms in each state. He would like to do not move easily and I end up breaking something. Sound familiar? Consequently we repair the feeders every fall to start the season. And so the cycle continues. As always please feel free to contact myself or any board member for information on your Association or just to talk Belties! We are working hard for our members to benefit and grow. Terry Etheridge, President GLBGA recruit and retain more members. We need to find out if all Great Lakes members are national members. The 2011 Denver show went well. We are urged to promote this show. If more Galloways were there, we could perhaps move out of the stock yards and into the main arena. There was considerable discussion about getting into other open shows. We need to check out the possibilities in each of our States. Nominations for Directors: No new nominations voted on unanimous ballot carried. Doug Abney, Matt Ellerbrock and Terry Etheridge re-elected for three year terms. Motion to adjourn Acting Secretary, Elly Landeck Board of Directors Meeting At 2011 World Beef Expo Your GLBGA Directors made several decisions at the annual fall directors meeting at the 2011 World Beef Expo to better assist you, the member in promoting and marketing your cattle. Many of you have contributed generously when asked for sponsorships for the yearly activities and the need for promotion for all members was and is a priority for your board of directors. At the most recent meeting, funds were allocated for the purchase of a table top booth. This table top booth will be available to any member for use in promoting the Belted Galloway Breed and the GLBGA. P.R. Director Kathi Jurkowski said the need is there for such a promotional item and feels with a table top booth being available, more members will be interested in using it. Various designs for the booth are being explored now. Availability will be announced on the Forum as soon as one is purchased. Secondly, in keeping with promotion regionally, yet having a presence on the national level, GL- BGA is joining other BGS members in sponsoring classes at the National Junior Belted Galloway Show at the NAILE, in Louisville, KY. GLBGA appreciates the support of its membership and is working hard to benefit all members with these exciting opportunities. Greg Hipple, Secretary, GLBGA Help Needed At WBE For many years, Bob and Lyndall Mack were in charge of the hospitality booth for exhibitors and spectators at our World Beef Expo show. Their retirement a few years ago left a void, and we are still having Mack withdrawal! This year was especially hard because our show was immediately followed by our sale and many were hungry. For anyone who wants to be involved at World Beef, but does not want to show, helping our exhibitors and visitors by setting up and manning the refreshment table on show day will be greatly appreciated. The Association will purchase refreshments, and many others donate goodies as well. So, if you would like to do something special for the group, just let one of the directors know. 2 Fall 2011 Great Lakes Belted Galloway News

4 Great Lakes is at work for you and your Belties. The GLBGA booth has been updated with a new format and new pictures. The picture below shows the booth and our numerous auction items displayed at World Beef Expo, which reminds us... thank you to all those that brought and those that bought items. We raised over $500 for our area BYG juniors. Bev and Bryan Roth, Hickory Lawn Farm, not only run the farm, they own and operate Mt. Zion Pub in Boscobel, WI. Kathi Jurkowski reports, Jerry and I stopped by to see their herd of Belties and Bryan s family farm. We even got to meet Bryan s mom, who was super Have Ya Herd? sweet. We love viewing their Belties but another thing we loved was the best Bloody Marys in Wisconsin at their bar/ restaurant called Mt. Zion Pub. So stop by for a see (the Belties) and a sip. The Bloody Mary is like a meal in a glass, it was fantastic, the best I ve ever had! Kathy Stern s back must be better; she s been horsing around again. Kathy and Al, Arbor Winds Farm, were out west trail riding and enjoying life. So glad, your back is back. Thanks to Bruce Roland for stopping by the booth at World Beef Expo and giving his regards to us from his father, Bob Roland, R.M. Roland Cattle Co. 5 Getting To Know GLBGA New Members Steve and Rebecca Menke, Silver Maple Farms, Bode, IA Silver Maple Farms is located just south of Algona, Iowa in the north central part of the state. Steve and Rebecca Menke purchased their original eight acres in 1998 and have since added another 54 acres. They rent an additional 13 acres of pasture/hay ground. The Menke s human family consists of Steve, Rebecca and their three children: Josh, 21; Rorrie, 10; and Wren, 7 1/2. Their Beltie family currently consists of 11 girls, several meat steers, one bull calf and the two bulls. We purchased a group of seven cows and their calves from Curt Smith, Spirit Lake, Iowa in April of Kincora Pendracken (10591B) came from Randy Kennedy in June of that year and Krullcrest Cleitus (9127R) was saved from Hamburger Row when a local farmer called us after seeing our belted cows in the field that fall Menke relates. The Menkes chose the Belted Galloway breed because they wanted to raise grass-fed beef and needed hardy grazers that did not need a lot of pampering and had docile temperaments. Also, they wanted a heritage breed as, we believe diversified genetics are very important. Belties were a perfect fit! We wanted a cow/calf herd to control our meat animals from start to finish; a good start is critical for grass finishing and having animals raised on the pasture combos works beautifully, they tell. Their breeding goals are for cattle with solid conformation, good mothering with easy calving, great temperament and good grazing/finishing ability. Their website, net, connects them to people looking for meat and breeding stock. The farm usually carries a wholesale license as well as retail and farmer s market licenses so that they can sell out of their home from inspected freezers, at the local farmer s market, and at their local cooperative grocery store. The Menkes have begun adding memberships to local organizations like the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association as well as advertising in the 2011 Beltie Annual. They hope to have advertising in the newsletters as they have more stock hit the ground in Calving is a special time for their family. They all keep watch and when a cow starts showing signs of labor, they all head out and watch quietly in the field. Then the girls get the honor of naming the calf, which is why they have a Moon and Stars... because they go together, Mom! The Menkes love their Belties! Chad and Jessica Bunker, Hanolin Farm, New Lisbon, WI Chad and Jessica Bunker live on four acres bordering Chad s parents 140 acre farm in New Lisbon, WI. The farm was also Chad s grandparents place and his grandfather raised Blank Angus cattle. Upon retiring, his grandfather rented out the land for crop production, which it is still being used for today. Chad says, My hope is to turn it back to pasture and hay ground. We have already started fencing off some of it. We built our house seven years ago and are finally able to focus on something else other than the house. The Bunkers bought their first Beltie from John Hamm, Wisconsin River Farm, in Mauston, WI, and currently have two head, one of which is bred. This month they are adding two more Belties as soon as the pregnancy checks are done. Chad and Jessica, who have been married for eight years, have three children. Collin is 12 and the Bunkers hope to get him into the show ring soon. Hannah, who is 7, hasn t decided on whether or not she wants to do any showing yet. Two-year old Olivia loves being out with the rest of her family and helping. When asked why they picked the Belted Galloway breed, Chad cites size, appearance, and temperament as the main attractions. Their goal, for the most part, is to have a grass-fed cow/calf operation along with a few grain-fed animals, with marketing done primarily via internet and word of mouth. Wisconsin State Fair Exhibit Is A Sharing Experience It was 5 am on a beautiful Monday morning in early August with myself and the three boys all in the truck headed to the Wisconsin State Fair. One might think that this is a little early to be leaving to go and have a fun day at the fair. Having fun was correct but we had a trailer with three Belties inside which were headed for a three day exhibit at the fair. Upon arriving at the fairgate we were greeted with a very warm smiling face who said, when I told her I had the Belted Galloway for the exhibit, you mean the Belties. She went on to inform me that Belties are Tony s (he is in charge of the exhibits) favorite breed of cattle and that he had been calling the gate every ten minutes to see if we had arrived. Upon arriving at the lower barn, those of you who attend World Beef Expo know the barn well, we were graciously welcomed by Tony as he showed us that we were well provided for with gates and bedding. The exhibit was great and information given out ranged from what we take for granted to deep conversation with breeders of other breeds. We exhibited along side of the Lowlines and the Scottish Highlanders, who both only had a short travel like we did. Even with these interesting breeds the Belties definitely got a large share of the traffic. This was driven by, of course, that great white belt that our wonderful Belties have. However, I did stack the cards in our favor by bringing a cute and adorable three week old heifer calf. Everyone is probably curious what kind of questions we were asked as there are people at the fair that come from all walks of life. Well here are just a few. When looking at the steer we had there. When is she going to have a baby? How do you dye the black hair to make it white? Are they born with the white belt? What makes the breed unique? After this experience I encourage everyone if they have a chance to do an exhibit or help at an exhibit. I say this as I now have a better understanding of what my family takes for granted regarding agriculture most people do not even know or understand. My family walked away with a good feeling that we hopefully helped to educate children and adults. We would like to thank Wisconsin State Fair and GLBGA for this great opportunity. 6 You Know You re Having A Bad Show Day When For many years, exhibitors at GLBGA shows were watched by a secret panel of judges to see who was most deserving of the Bull Buster Bob Award and most were showing in fear that they would win this dreaded prize. This award was given to whoever had the hardest, even funniest time in the show ring, all in good spirit and fun. We will not name names, but you know who you are. Our exhibitors (and some of our winners) knew they were having a bad show day when Your animal is loose in the show ring and five big men catch him, but he gets away from them as well. How are you supposed to hold on to him? OH NO, it gets worse - the judge grabs the animal s lead line and he can t even hold him. Your mature bull gets loose, terrifying the other bulls in the ring while the exhibitors try to hold them. Four people begin fencing not building a fence with woven wire, rather they artfully try to grab your bull s nose ring with their show sticks. Luckily, one of them snags the target, and your bull is under control again at the end of a show stick! Your animal gets away from you. Olie Burgers Recipes by Sylvia Bednarski Ingredients: 1 lb Ground beef Chopped onion 1 Egg 1/4-1/2 cup Masterpiece (or other) barbecue sauce Whole wheat Ritz crackers Directions: 1. Mix ingredients, adding whole wheat Ritz crackers until you get the consistency to paddy them. 2. Season to taste. Derby Pie Delight by Sylvia Bednarski Ingredients: 2 Eggs 1 cup Sugar 1 stick Margarine or butter, melted and cooled 1/2 cup Flour 1 tsp Vanilla 1 (6 oz) pkg. Chocolate chips 2 cup Pecans, chopped Bourbon, if desired Directions: 1. Preheat oven to Mix together all the ingredients and pour into the unbaked pie shell. 3. Bake for 45 minutes or until pie is set.cool Twenty men (Ok, maybe not quite that many) are running around the ring trying to catch it and you re lying on your back looking at the show ring ceiling. Your animal is dragging you around the ring so much you have a cloud of sawdust in the air and the spectators start coughing and wheezing. Your animal goes ballistic and starts bellowing like a bull that s just been put into the herd. Your bright white, ironed- crisp show shirt has been ripped and has more cow crap on it than your trailer and maybe even a little blood. Your animal is all fitted - looking good except for its legs. It has kicked at everyone within striking distance and your show stick has a 45-degree bend in it. You have so much rope burn on your hands from hanging on it hurts when you shake the judge s hand. Then there is The Spinner. Everyone is nicely set up, looking good, and Barn Talk March of 2012 will mark my anniversary of fifteen years of involvement in the Belted Galloway breed. I spent a lot of time visiting breeders and herds over the years, and some recent show results brought back some cattle memories. In March of 1997, I made a visit with my family to Klover Korners Farm to see Belted G a l l o w a y Ross Fogle, BYG Advisor cattle for the first time. Now remember, I was an 8-year-old boy, so my first encounter with a super-friendly, fuzzy, Belted Galloway calf sealed the deal for me, I was hooked on that calf. His name was Gusto or just Gus for short. I needed a 4-H project and Gus was going to be a bull and not steered. And you know that bulls can t be a 4-H project, so disappointed, I went home without Gus. I eventually found a heifer to show and my family continued farm visits over the years. Gus worked and bred females at Klover Korners and then was sold to Sun Valley Farms in WI. Lyndall and Bob had a pretty fine bull, in my opinion, and Lyndall always had some special cookies for me in her cookie jar your animal comes in and starts spinning. Your Beltie is doing circles, knocking everyone else s animal out of the perfect stance. They give you that look and all you can say is Sorry. The show ring display is a cute little picket fence between the two show rings. Your Beltie actually jumps this fence. Luckily, the animal clears it and is not a shish kebab on a cute picket fence. Your Beltie is now in the show ring with the Piedmontese, disrupting their show. Am I having a nightmare or what? And then there s the young BYG fella that had a heifer get scared and have a panic attack; all watching did too. He held on to her, show stick and all, and rode out the storm. They must have gone a city block, bucking and kicking. It was a rodeo but he stayed on her for over 10 seconds. I told him, You should win the Bull Buster Bob award. Everyone went, What s that? Maybe it s time to start doing this award again. - by Ross Fogle, BYG Advisor when I visited! In 2001, my family and I visited Antietam Farm in IL. There was a little heifer in the pasture named Ladybug. She just walked up to my sister and me and sniffed our clothes. To my surprise, I learned that she was Gus granddaughter, the little bull, who five years earlier, was my first encounter with a Belted Galloway. Ladybug was sold at a Deep South Sale at The University of TN, and after a few years was again sold at the National Sale in Fryeburg, ME. You are probably wondering, what s the point Ross of your sappy recall down memory lane? The point is to build an edification and recall of cattle in your breed. I ve written in the past about the importance of learning about conformation, but if you take the time to learn about other breeders and their cattle, it will make you more knowledgeable when you make your purchases or breeding decisions. Almost 15 years later, Gus greatgrandson and Ladybug s bull calf, Meadowood X-man sired by Mochrum Kingfisher, was the Grand Champion Bull at the Big E. I was fortunate to watch the show through the video stream and there now is a YouTube video of this bull. Watch his YouTube video! Be the judge! Build a frame of reference! 6 Fall 2011 Great Lakes Belted Galloway News
