1 America s Boating Club is a registered trademark of the United States Power Squadrons December 2018 Annapolis, Maryland Volume 77, Number 12 Commander s Message Cdr Anthony Martin, JN Watching the leaves turn from green to brown, one can t help think about how quickly the boating season came to an end. We didn t get out on the water as much as we wanted, but we spent a lot of time with friends and family doing things with the water in sight. For sure, there is something therapeutic about seeing the water. That benefit is enhanced by being amongst members of the squadron. When we get together, a lot of good will and warmth is shared. Which brings this article to the Crew Overboard message. If you know a member that you haven t seen or heard from for a while, give them a call. Just let them know you are thinking about them. We have a few members who are not as active as they once were, but it does not mean that they should be forgotten. Keep in mind that the holiday season can be particularly challenging for some folks who may feel isolated, due to poor health or lack of transportation. If they live near you, you might offer to bring them to the Holiday Dinner or deliver a small baked good. You might even offer to help winterize their vessel, if they have not already done so. Speaking of winterizing the boat, it is a good idea to do it yourself. If you have never done it, shadow the technician doing it for you or treat a knowledgeable friend to lunch in exchange for a how to session. There is probably no better way to know your boat than to get your hands dirty once in a while. You might want to review a few publications before taking on the task. The most obvious would include: your boat owner s manual, the hot water heater manual, your engines service manual, Nigel Calder s Boatowner s Mechanical and Electrical Systems, and America s Boating Club s Engine Maintenance course manual. After reviewing these and getting your hands dirty, you will be in a good position to create a checklist of things to do and items needed. This checklist can be updated annually as needed. While reading these materials is a good idea, you can enhance your understanding by taking a course or seminar related to servicing your boat. 3 By the time you read this, we will be right in the middle of the holiday season and our Marine Corp Toys for Tots drive. I hope to see you all there. As I write this, Thanksgiving is still a few days off. This time of year, we still have a nice day or two left with mild temps and sunshine nice enough to want to be out on the water enjoying the bay as it cools down and gets ready for winter. However, the question is, What does one do on one s boat. No water skiing, tubing or floating on a raft in cold bay waters. Those days are now behind us for So, when I heard that ASPS members P/Lt/C Gary Antonides, AP, and 1st/Lt Pat McGeehan, P, might be headed out for an afternoon on the water to check ATONs, I said, What the heck, sign me up. Entrance to Severn River ATON at Tolly Point Executive Officer Lt/C Ron Ricketts, S So what is an ATON check? We all are aware of the buoys and markers that dot the Bay (ATON = Aids to Navigation). Long ago, before the over reliance on electronic navigation aids, the United states Power Squadrons and ASPS were very active in a program that is an extension of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard, and NOAA. It is called the Cooperative Charting Program. The objective is to go out and validate that the markers are indeed in the location where they are supposed to be and report to the proper authorities where there are variances, so they can be noted and revised on navigation charts. USPS members who volunteer for this activity get points for each ATON checked which are counted toward USPS annual merit marks. In the past year, Gary and Pat have taken the initiative to bring renewed focus and energy to this effort on behalf of our Annapolis Squadron. Their goal is to report back to the Coast Guard on the South River, Severn and Magothy Rivers all within the proximity of Annapolis. How to check an ATON One needs to check the location, physical condition, and the lights of ATONs. The location is compared to the Light Gary with the Official LIGHT LIST at hand Lists, provided by the Coast Guard. Using a smart phone that has a GPS and camera, and a means to capture the longitude and latitude, the objective is to pass by the ATON within a few feet and record one s findings, and then compare them to the Light Lists. It is very important to call out discrepancies between what is observed and what is actually there. On Saturday, 17 November, we were fortunate to have a 50-degree, sunny day. Gary and I managed to get out on the water. In two hours, we checked off 21 ATONs on the Severn River. Working together, we would cruise up to an ATON, make the observations, and record our findings. Fortunately, the GPS on my boat has a WAYPOINT feature that made capturing and recording the data quite easy. Someone might say, So what? Those buoys never move. Really? Interestingly enough, in the short time we were out, we found out that of United States Power Squadrons, we are America s Boating Club Page 3

4 ATON Missing Number Gary comparing chart to Light List to confirm readings the NOAA buoys we checked, one was out of position by a bit more than a mile. Try not to rely on that one for your next waypoint! Another Coast Guard ATON no longer had its proper number designation as it had completely fallen off on one side. So, at the end of our exercise, we felt like we could say mission accomplished. We managed to confirm that most all were in the correct location and doing what they are intended to do. But, there are a few that need some attention, which of course we will be able to report to the authorities so that appropriate action can be taken. Interested in getting involved in this program? Reach out directly to Gary (garyanto@verizon.net) and Pat (sailannierose@gmail.com). I think you will find it very interesting and worthwhile. It is a great way to become more familiar with why these ATONs are so important as they are vital navigation aids. Our observations and activity remind everyone of the old adage, Trust, but verify. ATONs are only AIDS to Navigation. You, as captain of your vessel, should be well versed in using your charts, compass and GPS positioning all together as you navigate the Chesapeake Bay. NOAA Severn River ATON AN - Not even close to where it is supposed to be! You will be amazed at what you might see while out checking ATONs. Gary and I were able to catch a view of USS Sioux City, off the Naval Academy, making history on 17 November as the first combat ship ever to be commissioned at the U.S Naval Academy. Vessel Safety Check Don t cruise without one! Please contact D/Lt Homer Sandridge, N, at (443) , or sherrysand@hotmail.com to arrange a VSC for your boat. 5 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch December 2018 A Visit to Blackwater Distilling P/Lt/C Georgiana Maszczenski, S As we all know, the fun doesn t stop for our members just because the boating season is over! A great example of this would be 10 November, when 19 of our members took a field trip to Kent Island. We visited the Blackwater Distilling company for a tour and tasting of locally crafted vodkas, rums and whiskey. Located in an industrial park, this operation is currently poised to grow with the addition of a new location featuring a larger tasting room and a tavern. Meanwhile, we had an up close look at how they create their liquors from inception to bottling. Our hosts for the afternoon were obviously passionate about their craft, and they were more than willing to share their knowledge with us. Of course, I should mention that the tasting was fun as well. Let me finish by mentioning this was truly a boating related activity. Blackwater Distiilling named their vodka Sloop Betty a nod to boats on the Chesapeake as well as a remembrance of World War II art on the fuselages of airplanes. Their rum is called Picaroon. They claim it simply means rogue, but any dictionary search shows it also means pirate or pirate ship! We ended our adventure dining at the Ram s Head Shorehouse. Everyone said the day was a great success. Some members even said they can t wait to go back again. In fact, Blackwater Distilling offers a volunteer opportunity you can help bottle the product. Stay tuned! We might just be back soon! Pictures by Leyla Kazaz, S, and P/Lt/C Georgiana Maszczenski, S United States Power Squadrons, we are America s Boating Club Page 5

8 Safety P/C Jeff Short, JN-IN Cybersecurity Awareness Month has passed. However, the Anchor Watch editor, P/Lt/C Georgiana Maszczenski, S, suggested that staying safe online is always and appropriate topic. Many of our boats are laid up for the season, and we may be spending more time online during the winter. I thought it helpful to provide a quick review on some of the simple things you can do to remain safe online. In the same way that you shouldn t go out on the water without wearing your personal floatation device, you shouldn t venture online without taking some basic precautions. I find it amazing all the ways that exist for someone to get their hands on my information through my computer, tablet and phone. Although I do not have extensive expertise, I have learned a few of the basics of online security that do not require IT skills to share. Protect all devices that connect to the internet: Be sure that all of your devices, not just your computer, are protected with anti-virus and malware programs. And, keep them updated. Having the latest security software, web browser and operating system is the best defense against viruses, malware and other online threats. I make it a point to keep my security software current. When in doubt, throw it out: Links in , social media posts and online advertising are often how cybercriminals try to steal your personal information. Even if you know the source, if something looks suspicious, delete it. I study my s in the preview screen and delete everything that is suspicious BEFORE opening them. Personal information is like money; value it and protect it: When making a purchase online, be alert to the kinds of information being collected to complete the transaction. Remember, you only need to fill out the required fields that are often indicated by a red asterisk. Look for the S for Security: When shopping, check to be sure the site is security enabled. Look for web addresses with ( rather than with no s ) indicating extra measures to help secure your information. Now you see me, now you don t: Some stores and other locations look for devices with WiFi or Bluetooth turned on to track your movements while you are within range. I disable WiFi and bluetooth on my phone and tablet except when I need to use them. Get savvy about WiFi hotspots: Limit the type of business you conduct over open public WiFi connections, including logging in to key accounts like and banking. Adjust the security settings on your device to limit who can access your phone. When I need to use a WiFi hotspot, I turn on my WiFi and then my VPN app (Virtual Private Network application) to ensure others using the hotspot can not get my information. Put a VPN app on your device. Lock down your login: Fortify your online accounts by enabling the strongest authentication tools available, such as biometrics, security keys or a unique one-time code through an app on your mobile device. Your usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts like , banking and social media. Use two factor authentication if it is available from your account. After putting in my user name and password, I receive a text message from the account. The text has a code that I must enter in order for the account to be sure it is really me signing in. Make your password a sentence: A strong password is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. The longer your password the better. Use numbers and symbols if possible. It is amazing how fast a criminal using a computer can figure out simple passwords. Safety Cont. on page 9 United States Power Squadrons, we are America s Boating Club Page 8

9 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Anchor Watch December 2018 Safety Cont. from page 8 Unique account, unique password: Having separate passwords for every account helps to thwart cybercriminals. Consider using one of the several password manager apps such as Dashlane, 1Password, LastPass and many others. These password manager apps will generate complicated passwords for you, and then securely store them so that you don t have to actually remember any of them. Check out staysafeonline.org for more ideas on staying safe this winter while surfing the web for boating equipment and cruising ideas for next boating season. Jan Wilson is a new ASPS member. 11 Dinner Delights P/Lt/C Georgiana Maszczenski, S Our November dinner meeting featured Dr. William C. Boicourt. Dr. Boicourt is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science at the Horn Point Laboratory. He addressed the effects of strong storms on our region. If you were at this meeting, you would have heard the following: Hurricane Isabel in 2003 wasn t a particularly strong storm. But, it was able to cause a lot of damage due to storm surge. Although most of our weather comes from the west, hurricanes travel from Africa to the United States on the trade winds. ENIAC computers were used to work on weather data in order to improve forecasts. An interesting side note given by Dr. Boicourt was that the first programmers for ENIAC were women mathematicians. Hurricanes are heat engines. They need warm water to build and grow. Hurricane Michael gathered strength just before landfall because it passed over warm water. The European model for weather forecasting is often held up to be better than the United States model. However, the United States model is improving due to an increase in the use of ocean conditions as a part of the forecasting model. Long term data shows that future storms will drop more rain and may stall more often. If you missed this meeting, you missed the opportunity spend time with fellow boaters. You also missed the opportunity to learn more about weather effects on our region. Remember, our meetings offer more than just food. Our speakers always have great things to share. Join us and see for yourself at our next meeting. We look forward to seeing you then. Save the Date! 14 Anchor Watch December 2018 ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON Downrigging Weekend Oct Chestertown MD Susan Gilbert The Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival in Chestertown has become a favorite October mini-get-away for my husband and me. This was our third trip to this charming town to view some of the very interesting ships, Chesapeake Bay work boats, beautifully preserved Chris-Craft power boats and antique cars. In past years we had sailed on the Pride of Baltimore II and the Meerwald, an oyster schooner built in New Jersey. This year we finally had managed to get tickets to sail on the Kalmar Nyckel, the beautiful recreation of the first Swedish ship to arrive in colonial America. Unfortunately, Saturday morning dawned rainy and very windy. We had not been notified that she would not sail and we set off hoping for the best. It was not to be; the others sailed but the Kalmar Nyckel did not. She was too tall above water and it was feared that she would not be able to maneuver well in the tight quarters of the Chester River in mph gusts. In spite of the weather and not sailing, we can report some good news. The Chester River shore area occupied by Downrigging activities has undergone many welcome improvements since last year. Gone are the muddy paths leading up to the docks. They are now covered in stable, level pavers that provide accessibility for everyone. On a chilly, windy, rainy day in Chestertown, MD, A beautiful new building the Kalmar Nyckel sits at pier, 10/27/18 --Photo has replaced the tent that by Bob Gilbert once housed the information center. 15 After walking into the town in the rain and seeing no sign of clearing, we decided to head home. However, on the way home we heard from friends that the Maritime Museum in St. Michael s was having its annual Oyster Festival that same weekend. A big hot bowl of oyster stew sounded wonderful, so off we went to the next adventure. Youngsters pilot a small replica PT-109 on the Chester River, occasionally firing their their guns, which make noise but do not fire actual ammo. 10/28/ Photo by Bob Gilbert The Jollyboat Vigilant reproduction boat built in 1991 attracts a large percentage of the crowd at Downrigging Weekend in Chestertown, MD on Saturday, 10/27/18. --Photo by Bob Gilbert.
