Game #58 (21-36) Away Game #35 (15-19) RHP Euclides Leyer (2-6, 4.95) vs. RHP Pedro Encarnacion (4-3, 2.18) Today s Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) can secure a series win with a victory today over the Suns (A, Nationals) in the series finale at Municipal Stadium. Kannapolis is coming off two of its best pitching performances of the season in Wednesday s doubleheader Jefferson Olacio threw a complete game in the first game, and three pitchers combined to no-hit the Suns in Game 2. By sweeping the twin bill, Kannapolis knocked Hagerstown out of first place for the first time in weeks as Hickory (32-25) took over the top spot in the Northern Division with less than two weeks to play in the season s first half. Hagerstown is tied with West Virginia, each a half-game back, while the Intimidators remain in seventh, 11.0 games back in the division. Intimidating Starters: Euclides Leyer, 22, makes his team-leading 12th start of the season and his ninth on the road. He has lost his last three decisions with his most recent win coming May 10 at Asheville when he worked a season-long 7.0 innings. Leyer is coming off consecutive 6-strikeout games. In his eight road starts, he is 2-3 with a 3.14 ERA (15 ER/43 IP). The right-hander has had trouble in the first inning, posting a 8.18 ERA in the first inning but just a 4.17 ERA after the first frame. Hagerstown Hurlers: Pedro Encarnacion, who turns 22 this month, makes his 10th start of the season and second against Kannapolis. The Intimidators knocked him out after 3.0 innings on May 18 in Kannapolis, an eventual 5-0 win for the I s. He bounced back with 5.0 scoreless innings in his last outing, a win on May 24 at Lexington. When he last faced Kannapolis, his ERA was fourth-best in the SAL. Now his 2.18 ERA (10 ER/41.1 IP) would be fifth in the league except he is four innings shy of qualifying. In three home starts, he is 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA (e ER/12.1 IP). Encarnacion split 2012 between Short-Season Auburn and Hagerstown, going 5-2 with a 4.57 ERA in 19 games (14 starts). Washington signed him as a UDFA in 2010, and he made his professional debut that season with the GCL Nationals. About Last Night: Kannapolis swept Wednesday s doubleheader with phenomenal pitching in both games. Jefferson Olacio limited the Suns to two runs (one earned) over 7.0 innings, his first complete game in Class A ball, in a 6-2 win in Game 1. Three Intimidators pitchers combined to no-hit the Suns in an 11-0 shutout win in Game 2. Braulio Ortiz worked four hitless innings before turning things over to Adam Lopez (2 IP) and Joe Dvorsky (1 IP) to combine for just the third no-hitter in Intimidators history. Lopez notched the win, his first of the season, as the triumvirate allowed just four base runners all night (two walks apiece by Ortiz and Lopez). At the plate, Josh Richmond and Jake Brown paced the club with three hits apiece and three doubles between them in Game 1. Richmond kept up the pace, going 2-4 with a double, a home run (1) and four RBI to power the offense in Game 2. No-No Notes: Braulio Ortiz, Adam Lopez and Joe Dvorsky combined for the third no-hitter in Intimidators history in the second game of Wednesday s doubleheader. All three have come in 7-inning games. The last no-no for Kannapolis came Aug. 20, 2010, when Matt Wickswat, Jake Petricka and Taylor Thompson no-hit the Hickory Crawdads in the second game of a home doubleheader, a 1-0 Intimidators win. Brian Miller threw the first and only individual no-hitter in Intimidators history on June 10, 2003, when he pitched Kannapolis past Greensboro (then known as the Bats), 2-0, in the first game of a twin bill. Two pitchers threw individual no-hitters before the team was known as the Intimidators. Rich Hunter tossed a no-no in 1995 for the Piedmont Phillies, and Rob Burger threw a no-hitter in 1997 for the Piedmont Boll Weevils. On The Receiving End: The only time the Intimidators have even been no-hit came against Hagerstown, as the victim of Clay Hensley s perfect game on May 3, 2003, in Game 2 of a doubleheader. Hensley retired all 21 batters faced as the Suns defeated the Intimidators 2-0. Dvorsky Does It Again: This wasn t the first no-hitter relief pitcher Joe Dvorsky has been a part of in his professional career. The right-hander combined with Scott Snodgress and Blake Drake to no-hit the Casper Ghosts for the Advanced Rookie Great Falls Voyagers on Aug. 18, Dvorsky worked the final two innings of a nine-inning affair as the Voyagers busted the Ghosts, 4-0. Complete-ly Forgotten: Before the no-hitter, starter Jefferson Olacio enjoyed his first complete game with Kannapolis, the second in his career. He worked a career-long 7.0 innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five, one shy of his season-high. His other complete game came July 26, 2012, for the Advanced Rookie Bristol White Sox, in which he worked 6.0 innings in a losing effort. Olacio is the first Intimidators pitcher to throw a complete game since Paul Burnside threw a 2-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader against Bryce Harper and the Hagerstown Suns on May 30, Doubling K-dator: Josh Richmond hit safely in both games of Wednesday doubleheader, extending his hit streak to a season-long nine games, batting.417 (15-36) since May 28. He has doubled at least once in six of his last seven games, including a two-double performance Game 1 on Wednesday, the 11th 2-double game by an Intimidator this season. He now has eight doubles in his last seven games (May 30-June 5), leading the Minors over that span. Richmond also drove in four runs, becoming the sixth Intimidator with a 4-RBI game this season. He set his career-high with six RBI on Aug. 5, 2010, highlighted by a grand slam for the Short- Season Spokane Indians (Rangers) against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes during his professional debut. Triple-Take: Micah Johnson snapped a four-game hitless streak (0-14) in the second game of Wednesday s twin bill, going 2-4 with his league-leading sixth triple and three runs scored. He continues to lead the Minors with 47 stolen bases and 14 times caught stealing. His 55 runs scored lead the Sally League and rank second in the Minors. He is tied for 11th in Minor League Baseball with six triples. The recently-selected SAL All-Star ranks ninth in the SAL with a.315 average (68-216), 10th in on-base percentage (.406) and fourth in at-bats (216), while tying for the league-lead with two intentional walks, both of which came in extra-innings against the Sand Gnats on May 30, an eventual Intimidators walk-off win.
