4 The Kentucky Hgh School Athlete Otfcal Organ of the Kentucky Hgh School Athletc Assocaton Vol. - No.. AUGUST, 0 $.00 Per Year. From the Seeretary~s Offee The nsurance Program Durng -0, the frst year of the K. H. S. A. A. Protecto n Fund, clams pad for njures sustaned by athletes amouuted to $88., ths amount exceedng by a few dollars the amount receved from the schools ~ football and basketball fees. A statement of the recepts and dsbursements of the Protecon Fund appears n ths ssue of the magazne. The Board of Control has set the cost of protecton under the nsurance plan at the same fgures as those of last year, namely, 7 cents per player n football and cents per player n each other sport. The football fee wll nclude coverage for sprng practce n football. The schedule of benefts for 0- s dentcal wth tha t of last year wth the excepton of the X-ray allowance, whch has been changed from $.00 to $.00. Among the s ugg estons whch have come to the Board concernng the program s one that the benefts be ncreased. Snce the nsurance plan s not selfsustanng but has to depend upon the regular K. H. S. A. A. fund for a subsdy, the Board feels that any rn.a teral ncrease n the benefts would call for an ncrease n the cost of protecton, whch t s unwllng to make at ths stage of the de velopment of the program, wth the great majorty o f member schools of tlle K. H, S. A. A. not nsurng ther athletes as yet. Consderng the small ec charged fo r protecton n ea ch sport, a study of the other state assocatons whch have comparable programs ndcates that the benefts under our Kenucky plan are probablv thl: most lberal of all. - A bulletn lstng the schedule of benefts and the requrements for partcpaton n the nsurance plan wll be maled to member schools wthn a few weeks. wth ther statements of the 0- dues. Meanwhle, prncpals or coaches wshng to study the plan may refer to the August ssue of the magazne, of last year. Prncpals o f schools playng footba ll. who wsh to nsur~ ther athle~es for the perod of prelmnary practcc should wnte the secretary at once and ndcate the number of boys who wsh protecton. n order that applcaton cards may be sent to the schools. 0- ~e~bersbp The secretary requests schools not to send n ther dues untl they receve ther statements, and that prncpals fll out these blue forms n full, the nformaton called for beng necessary for complete records of the assocaton. Especal attenton s called to the lnes on whch the varous sports mantaned by the schools a,-e lsted. On numerous occasons n the past the name of a coach n a certan sport s gven. when the school actually does not mantan that sport. Ths s especally true n baseball. Ths offce receves many calls for lsts of coaches n he varous sports, and has been compelled to comple naccur ate lsts snce the blue statement form s our only source of nformaton for ths materal. t wll be greatly apprecated f prncpals wll see to t that he nformaton on the statement forms s absolutely accurate. Snce the Board of Conrol has recently redstrcted the state, the new 0- booklet should be studed for the correct number of the dstrct and regon. Changes n the Rules Several changes were made n the KH. S. A. A. Consttuton, By-Laws, and Tournament Rules at the last annual meetng. These changes were gven n the May ssue of the magazne, and wll also appear n the new booklet. The Board of Control asks every school offcal to make t a pont of honor to know the rules a nd to carry them out. Requests for nterpretatons of the rules should be made to Presdent O'Donnell. MPORTANT CHANGES Prncpal shall verfy player's age by referrng to vtlal statstcs, both for orgnal certfcaton and for ccrtfcatojl of transfer athlete-by Law X, Sec.. 11 Page Eghl The K -'TLCKY flch SCHOOL ATHLETE A Short Hstot y of Football For ths short hsto ry of Football The Athlete s ndebted 0 a pamphlet from the Sports D epartment of Ke ds. Football Before Our Tme The frst people to ndulge n kckng a small round object from place to place were ance;:nt warrors. who after capturng the leader of an nvadng anny, beheaded hm and propelled the unortunate man's head along the streets wth ther feet. The f rst org anzed ball kckng game that we know of, was played by the ancent Greeks and was called Ha rpa~ to n. T o a very slght degree, t resembled modern football. On the opo.:nug play of every game, a member of one team standng n m dfe ld, threw the ball (probably a n ar-fll ed anmal bladder covered wth ths leather) as far as possble nto en CUY terrtory. A ll scorng was done by kckng the n Aa ted bladder across the goal lne. Carryng the ball was prohbted. T here was no set of rules w hch governed the number of players representng each team. The playng f eld vared n sze accordng to the number of partcpants. As the mentoned rules ndcate, Harpaston was a tmd game wthout bodly contact. As tme progressed, the game spread to Rome and other countres, and the rules were altered consderably. P layers were allowed to wear helmets, knee braces and elbow pads made from steel. T hey played, no t ne c e~s a rly to wn but to force opponents out of competton from n jury. Offca ls were un heard of, consequently the players settled ther arguments n ther own way. P lay f nally reached a state w hch even Caesar ddn't approve of, so he declared the game llegal. Ths menacng sport was harmful to those men who were elgble for hs anny. Caesar's rulg put the game out of exstence for qute some tme. Banned By All Kngs From Henry to Henry V A g ame smlar to the one Caesar forbade was ruled unla wful by Henry and all who s ucceeded hm, thru the regn of Henry VT. Henry, n order to make E ngland more powerful durng w a r tme, passed a law makng archl!ry compulsory. All boy;;, upon reachng a certan age, were compelled to master the art of shootng arrows from a bow. T here were other a ctvtes whch the Englsh youths prefened. namely the new modfed game of H a rpaston. They ddn't have the pleasure of ths sport long however because Henry realzed t was weakenng the defenoe of hs country. [b popularty was nfluencng a \ ast number of young men away from archery. Evdently every kng went thru a smlar experence. Henry V had to bar the game because of ts brutalty. One wrter wrote "t s a devlsh pastme w hch produces brawls, homcde and great effuson of blood." A nother wrote "t s a beastly fury a nd s hould be p ut to perpetua l slence." T he latter s uggeston was a ccepted. T he game was d scon tn ued for approxmately 00 years. Reappeared Wth Dfferent Rules When James took the throne n 0, England was usng gunpowder for war purposes. Archery.was no longer a necessty, so James placed hs stamp o approval on football (under revsed rules) as a health buldng sport for the young men of England. The new game was called Rugby. t was ~-xceedngly popular, despte the fact that all scorng was done by kckng. Runnng wth the ball was llegal. One afternoon, n the mdst of a Rugby game, a young E nglsh athlete named Wllam E lls, became nfurated because hs many attempts to kck a boundug ball were n van. Fnally he scooped the ball up, placed t under hs ann and raced across hs opponent's ~oal lne. The score wasn't allowed because he had vtolated the r ules. As tme progressed, many Englsh players were o the opnon that Rugby would be more enjoyable f the ball could be advanced by ether a kck o r a run. Certan ndvduals fell that t shouldn't be ca lled football f gans were to be made n a ny way other t han kckng. D espte ther protests carryng was legalzed and the uew game became more popular than ever. T here were a few, hovvcver, who a dhered to the orgnal set of rules whch permtted kckng only. The runnng and kckng games was known as Rugby Football. T hose complyng wth the frst set of R ugby rules called ther game Soccer. Our modern game of football e, olved from the run made by Wllam Ells. Lttle dd he realze that hs breach of the rules would eventually lead to such an mportant development n football. Frst Amercan ntercollegate Game T he frst scheduled football game to be played n the Unted Sta tes was between R utgers "U" and Prnceton, on November, 8, n New Brunswck, N. J. No admsson fee was charged. College songs were sung a nd cheers were very much n evdence. The crowd was small, b ut enthusasm ran hgh. Many spectators stood throughout the game-others were seated on a board fence whch surrounded the playng feld. Players Reach Scene of Battle At o'clock both teams appeared on the feld. They removed ther hats, coats and vests, rolled up ther sleeves a nd were all set for acton. The bovs representng Rutgers wore reel caps, n order to d'splay ther school color. The ball was small a nd round. t wasn't verv durable. n fact the game had to be held up several t mcs whle a new supply of ar was pumped nto the bladder. Before fve mnutes elapsed, Rutgers made two goals. The players and sp~ctators became very excted-play became rough. Prnc(!ton scored and the lead sec-sawed. \Vth only one more goal to play, two players hot n pursut of a loose ball crashed head-on nto a board fence whch was crowded wth spectators. They ht the ground wth a thud but no one was badly hurt. Soon after he crash. Rutgers scored - thus emergng t rum phant n the frst colleg e football game. Rules of Frst Game. There were men per team.. The goal posts were feet apart.. There was no cross-bar.. Scorng was done by kckng or battng (by hand) the ball through the goal posts. Tlls was called a goal.. Runnng wth the ball was llegal.. Sx goals consttuted a game. 7. The playng feld was much larger than the modern feld. 8. The r ules to ths game were very smlar to soccer.

12 /or AUGUST; 0 Other Colleges Organze Columba "U" organzed a team n 870 and played both Prnceton a nd Rutgers n that year. Yale n 87 had ts frst team. The frst hnt toward nter-sect-onal competton came n 87. At ths tme, ;'v[chgan "U" ssued a challenge to Cornell. T he game was to take place n Cleveland, a cty reasonably close to both Unverstes. Everythng was f ne, untl one of the Cornell boys mustered up enough courage to ask permsson from hs Prexy to have the game. Presdent \ bte, a fter hea rng the boy's proposal, stated rather emphatcally H wll not permt Cornell students to travel 00 mles just to agtate a bag of wnd." Early Rules Change Harvard, n 87, produced a team. Durng that year they tred both the Soccer and Rugby FootbalL T he players favored the latter, because t permtted kckng and runnng. n 87, Yale and H arvard met, usng Rugby rules. The: game we nt over wth a bang - t was thoroughly enjoyed by partcpants a nd spectators. n 87, at a rules meetng n Sprngfeld, Mass., t was decded that all games would be played Rugby style. The kckng game was stll stressed though. because four ponts were g ve n for a kcked goal whle a run across the goal lne counted but one. n 877, the number of rnen per team was reduced from to. Shortly afterward, the number was cut to players on each sde. n 87, a touchdown counted ponts, a goal after a touchdown pont and a goal from the f eld ponts. Football Nearly Lost To Amerca n 0, Amercan football was decdely on the down grade, due to nnumerable njures and deaths resultng from -the style of play whch characterzed the game after carryng became legal Nne plays out of ten were behnd mass nterference - close. ro ug h play predornnated at all tmes. The most m~ portant requstes of a player were brute strength and a large body. Parents, teachers and alumn bodes were attemptng to ha ve ootball dscarded permanen-tly. Somethng had to be doue at once. The rules commttee, n 0, made several mportant changes, w hch unquestonably saved the game for Amerca. L Forward passng became legal (ncdenta lly Ya le,n her frst attempted aeral play, scored a touchdown aganst Harvard).. Practcally all mass ormatons were elmnated.. T eams were gven four downs to make ten yards-prevously they had three downs to gan fve yards.. Hurdlng became llegal. :J. The playng perod was reduced from 70 to 0 mnutes. T hese new rules necesstated a dfferent stvle offootball w hch was not only much safer but more nterestng for pla yers and spectators. t was now a " wde open" game. Value Derved From Football To repeat the opnon of experts regardng foot ball's worth : t does, more than any other game, teach a hoy to take t on the chn and come back fghtng- an nvaluable asset w hen facng lfe's problems!
