2 Potawatomi District First Aid Meet 2016 Problem A (Green) Leader 4 Runner 1 On a bright, cool summer day your troop is completing a beautiful, but long 13 mile hike around Devil s Lake State Park, Wisconsin. The Ice Age Trail showcases outstanding glacial features and breathtaking scenic views of the region. It is 3:30pm when you arrive at the South Shore Visitors Center parking area. The scouts are all hungry, having skipped lunch because a thunderstorm appears to be coming in from the West and the leaders wanted to get back to shelter. It s going to get pretty stormy in just a little while. Scout Johnny is pale and sweating. He complains about feeling dizzy. A few scouts go to him just as he loses consciousness and falls awkwardly to the ground. They check his breathing and pulse. His breathing is shallow and pulse is high at 99 beats per minute. He is wearing a medical ID bracelet. They notice that during the fall he landed heavily on his right arm, and his shoulder is curved forward of its normal position. He quickly regains consciousness and screams, It feels like my arm popped off! Suddenly a small explosion is heard at the other end of the parking area. A man is seen lying in front of his car writhing in pain. His wife jumps out of the car and calls for the scouts to help. Three scouts run to help. The wife, Mrs. Lombardo explained to the scouts that their car would not start and her husband was checking the battery under the hood. He had taken the caps off the battery, but couldn t see the level of the acid in the cells. That was when he held a butane cigarette lighter near the cells. The flame ignited the hydrogen gas given off by the battery and it suddenly exploded. His eyes, head, face, and neck have been splashed with acid and are red, burned and blistered from the explosion and brief fire. A few sharp pieces of the battery case are imbedded deep in his right eye and are sticking out of it. Treat both Scout Johnny and Mr. Lombardo for their injuries. Make a sling our of cravat bandages to support Johnny s forearms and elbow.
3 Potawatomi First Aid Meet 2016 Problem B Gold Runner 3 Leader 1 CPR 2 Four boys from the Eagle patrol have been working on the Bird Study Merit badge for three months. To provide some practical experience in bird watching, the troop leaders, Mr. Stevens and Mr. Kim took the boys to Starved Rock State Park. They hoped to see eagles. Mr. Stevens recently retired and is treating the boys to a night s stay in the Starved Rock Lodge. At 7:30 AM the next morning the group bundles up and starts hiking to the Hennepin Canyon Overlook of the Illinois River where other hikers had seen eagles the day before. It is mid January. The weather is very cold, and there was a light snowfall overnight. The group starts walking on the Campanula Trail. They hike about a mile and a half and stop at Sandstone Point Overlook to see if there are any eagles there. Not having any luck, they continue on the River Trail to Hennepin Canyon Overlook, which is about three and a half miles from the lodge. Nearly three hours after leaving the lodge, they arrive at the overlook and spot four eagles on a large tree near the river. Joey, one of the scouts, wants to take a great picture, so he walks towards the tree while looking through the lens of his camera. He stumbles on a tree root and tumbles down to a small trail eight feet below the tree. Joey screams that he is in great pain. Mr. Stevens and the rest of the group carefully work their way down to Joey. On the lower trail, Mr. Stevens collapses to the ground and is unable to help with Joey. Mr. Stevens says that he feels very weak, has pain in the center of his chest, and is having trouble breathing and blood is slowly seeping from a scratch on the right side of his forehead. Mr. Kim checks him out and finds that Mr. Stevens has stopped breathing and has no pulse. Meanwhile, two of the scouts notice a tear in Joey s left pants leg. They look closer and see that the bone is sticking out through the skin below Joey s left knee. As the scouts assist Joey, they notice that Joey s ears were not covered and that the skin on the top of both ears has turned grayish-white. Treat both victims, stabilize Joey s leg.
4 PROBLEM C PINK Leader #3 Runner #2 On the last weekend in June, your troop camped in the tent campgrounds in Silver Lake State Park near Ludington, Michigan. On Saturday morning, everybody went swimming in Lake Michigan. Around 11 AM your patrol decided to walk north along the lake, then climb the dunes to find the Logan trail. You knew that you could walk the trail south through woods and reach camp in less than a mile. It was a warm day, and everybody was walking in swimming suits and shirts, but your leaders had insisted on your wearing hiking boots, carrying individual water bottles, and one person had the patrol first aid kit. When your patrol found Logan Trail, you all turned south to follow the trail to your campsite. At the top of the first hill, some of the patrol started running down. Joseph, the last scout in line, yelled Catch the football. Everybody in front of him turned around to see him kick a small gray object. As it disintegrated, a small swarm of wasps emerged. Everyone ran down the hill. Adam, at the front of the patrol, was running backwards down the hill so that he could laugh at the panic behind him. His foot got caught on a rock on the trail. He could feel a snap in his left shin as he fell down. He rolled off the trail onto a small Massasuaga rattlesnake that had been resting in a sunny patch. Despite the pain in his left leg, he felt the prick of the rattlesnake s fangs in his right thigh. The patrol hurried to Adam. He pointed to a bluish bump on his left shin. I think I broke it. And I got bit by a snake. Two drops of blood marked the bite on his thigh. Joseph said And I got stung by the wasps. He pointed to his neck where there was already a large swelling appearing and to his left arm, where two bumps appeared. In the center of the swelling on his neck was hanging the tail end of a wasp that Joseph had swatted. Joseph didn t notice that blood was running down his right leg from a shallow gash below the knee where he had scraped against a log as he came down the hill. In a few minutes, Joseph sat on the trail, mumbling that his tongue felt strange. Joseph was breathing, but with some difficulty and which seemed to be getting worse. Treat Adam and Joseph. Prepare a stretcher to transport Adam to the campsite. Show how you would lift Adam.
5 Potawatomi First Aid Meet 2016 Problem D - Blue Leader # 2 Runner # 4 Venture scouts from Troop 647 plan to have one last fun weekend before members leave for college. The group decides to spend Saturday at the Indiana Dunes State Park and invite a few additional friends along. They parked their cars in the State Park lot, which is just off of U.S. Route 12 in Michigan City, Indiana, and ate lunch. The parking lot is on the East side of high dunes that include Mt. Baldy, the tallest dune at the south end of Lake Michigan. The summit of Mt. Baldy is all sand and has been closed because of sinkholes that have swallowed up hikers. After lunch, the group hiked west along low dunes until they reached the Mount Baldy trail. Four of the guys turn right to take the trail down to the beach and Lake Michigan. The other four remember their Cub Scout days when they ran up and down Mt. Baldy and decide to climb Mt. Baldy as high as permitted. Ray, a friend of the scouts, tags along with the beach group and sets his daypack down near the water. Determined to start college with a tan, Ray lies in the scorching sun. He feels too comfortable to reach for a drink from his daypack. At 3:30 PM, after an hour of sunning, Ray notices a few horse flies hanging around. He puts on his college hoodie for protection and proceeds to swat at them. One fly breaks through his defense and bites Ray on the left side of his neck. The bite area turns red and slightly swollen. Angry that he had been bit, Ray tries to stand. He feels very weak and has a headache but is able to get up. With poor judgment, Ray pulls a lighter out of his bag to seek revenge on the flies. When it ignites, Ray tilts the lighter, but misses the fly and burns his right thumb. Defeated and drained, Ray collapses to the sand. His friends find him conscious, his skin to be cool, and his pulse to be racing. At the same time, the other group is still climbing and sliding down the dune face. Allen boisterously proclaims that he can make it down to the beach faster than anyone else. To prove his point, he scrambles up the face of Mt. Baldy past the Danger! Do Not Enter. signs. He turns and takes off running down the sandy slope. His leg unexpectedly sinks far into the sand. An old buried tree trunk with sharp edges slices through his exposed lower left leg. Allen falls in pain. His momentum carries him 80 feet to the bottom of the dune not too far from Ray. While tumbling, sand and dirt gets in his right eye and covers the jagged leg wound. When Allen s body comes to a stop, blood is pouring out of the leg wound. Treat Ray and Allen.
