4 South Bend s rally comes up short in late night loss to TinCaps Cubs will head home to begin series vs Great Lakes tomorrow Fort Wayne, IN: In what was supposed to be another make-up game doubleheader, the South Bend Cubs and Fort Wayne TinCaps got going three hours later than anticipated on Friday night from Parkview Field. For the third straight day, rain plummeted on the playing surface and the Cubs and TinCaps did not get started until 9:20 PM. But after the long delay, both teams played a late night ballgame and the TinCaps prevailed over the Cubs by surviving a late rally and taking the game 6-5. For the second straight game, South Bend got on the board first against lefty starter Tom Cosgrove. Despite a career day from Cosgrove, the Cubs found a way to take the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Cosgrove finished with a career high 11 strikeouts on Friday. Overall, the Cubs struck out 14 times in the game. The TinCaps quickly answered with four straight runs to make it a 4-1 game. In the top of the 7th, the tides turned again when Delvin Zinn hit a two run triple off the left-center field wall. Shortly after, Miguel Amaya brought in his only RBI of the night on a groundout. It was a 4-4 game heading to the bottom of the 7th. But again, Fort Wayne had an answer. They rapidly reclaimed the lead thanks to two runs in the bottom of the 7th. In the 9th, the Cubs found themselves down 6-4. After scoring a run to cut the lead in half, the Cubs had the bases loaded with just one out. Unfortunately, on a bouncer up the middle, Austin Filiere grounded into a game ending double play turned by the shortstop Gabriel Arias. With the 6-5 loss, South Bend falls to overall on the season. Starting tomorrow, they will open a three game series against the Great Lakes Loons. First pitch from Four Winds Field is set for 7:05 PM Box Score TinCaps Beat Rain & South Bend FORT WAYNE, Ind. The TinCaps beat the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs), 6-5, on Friday night at Parkview Field to win their fifth in a row. With the victory in front of a sellout crowd of 7,730 fans, Fort Wayne retained its spot at the top of the Midwest League Eastern Division second half playoff race. Second baseman Kelvin Melean broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run homer to the XFINITY Home Run Porch in left field. Melean, a 19-year-old from Venezuela, also drove in shortstop Gabriel Arias, who had doubled to lead the frame off. The TinCaps (26-26, 58-63) weren t home free yet, though. Righty reliever Dylan Coleman struck out the side in order in the eighth. The Cubs (22-31, 56-66) made things interesting in the ninth, however, by loading the bases against Coleman with one out. But the rookie from Missouri State induced a ground ball up the middle that Arias fielded and turned into a double play by stepping on second and throwing to first in time to retire South Bend cleanup hitter Ausitn Filiere. The Cubs had already shown their ability to overcome a deficit earlier in the game. Fort Wayne had broken a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a three-run frame only to see South Bend equalize in the top of the seventh. Initially, the TinCaps needed to come from behind. South Bend took a 1-0 lead in the third. Fort Wayne leveled the game in the fourth with an RBI single from right fielder Jack Suwinski. It was left fielder Olivier Basabe who put the Caps in front in the sixth with a run-scoring hit. Suwinski later added a two-run single that made it 4-1. The 20-year-old from Chicago has driven in 16 runs over his last 16 games. Though he didn t factor into the decision, TinCaps starter Tom Cosgrove became the first TinCaps pitcher to strike out 11 batters in a game this season. The 22-year-old lefty from Staten Island, N.Y., accomplished that in five innings of work. Because of rain, Friday s action was delayed by 3 hours and 45 minutes. After a rainout of the scheduled series-opener on Wednesday, and rain allowing only one game to be played on Thursday, Friday was set to be a doubleheader. Again, however, the forecast permitted only one game to be played. The TinCaps and Cubs will make up their postponed game when Fort Wayne visits South Bend from Aug Friday was the 16 th sellout of the season for the TinCaps at Parkview Field. The Caps can match their longest winning streak of the season on Saturday when they begin a 10-day road trip at Lansing.
5 Moreira Lifts Pilots to Season-Opening Victory GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Bethel College Pilots men s soccer team opened their 2018 season on the road and rallied for a 3-2 victory over Cornerstone (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon. Senior Lucas Moreira provided the heroics with his first career multi-goal game, including the game-winning goal in the 83 rd minute. GAME VITALS Score: Bethel def. Cornerstone 3-2 Records: Bethel (1-0-0) Cornerstone (0-1-0) NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll: Bethel not rated Cornerstone not rated Location: CU Soccer Field Cornerstone University Grand Rapids, Mich. SCORING SUMMARY 12 Richard Areche (CU) unassisted 27 Lucas Moreira (BC) penalty kick 38 Jose Barquin (BC) unassisted 71 James Pipe (CU) assisted by Sebastian Ramos and Richard Areche 83 Lucas Moreira (BC) assisted by Zac Schoon INSIDE THE BOXSCORE The Pilots are in their last nine season openers under head coach Thiago Pinto. Five of those ten season openers went into overtime. Lucas Moreira notched the multi-goal game of his career, with tallies in the 27 and 83. Zac Schoon recorded his first career assist, finding Moreira for the game-winning goal. The last time the Pilots defeated Cornerstone in their season opener a 1-0 win on August 19, 2015 the Pilots went on to an NCCAA national championship game appearance. QUOTES FROM COACH PINTO Resilient win on the road to start the season. I thought we did well for great stretches of the game and have a lot we can build on from our performance. We look forward to kicking off our home schedule this coming week with two great games [against top 25 opponents]. VOLLEYBALL Opening day of the volleyball season ended on a high note for Huntington as they stunned #16 Cornerstone University in the nightcap of the Forester Invitational. After dropping the first set 25-13, HU bounced back to win the next three, 25-19, 25-13, 25-22, for the 3-1 W over the Golden Eagles. Earlier in the day, Huntington had a strong showing but was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to the University of Northwestern Ohio. Huntington came out firing on all cylinders Friday morning against the Racers to win set one Unfortunately, the Racers regrouped to cruise to a set two win, 25-17, before claiming the next two tights sets by a score of each time for the 3-1 victory. While HU outhit their visitors, 47-35, 34 attacking errors led to the Foresters demise. Breanna Metz took top hitting honors for the match with 16 kills and a.333 hitting percentage. Lindsay Ingenito and Brandy Michie added nine and eight kills respectively. Jenna Tacosik dished out 29 assists to go along with four kills and three aces. Nicole Flickinger topped HU in digs with ten. The match was the first of the season for both teams with UNOH notching a second win later in the day while Shondell s crew picked up its first win by upending the Golden Eagles. It was an impressive display after a sluggish first set that saw the hosts score just 13 points but they more than made up for it by winning the next three in rather convincing fashion. The Foresters trailed just once, only for a possession, in sets two and three before coming back from a deficit in set four to stun one of the nation s best. Fifteen Foresters saw action, including four rookies, in the nightcap to lay claim to a total team effort. Tailor Schultheis set the tone with 12 kills but it was her spirit that Shondell was most appreciative about tonight. The fire Tailor brings with her play and energy, when she s steady and consistent, is enough to pave the way for a lot of things to happen. A pair of freshman in Ingenito and Lanie McClanahan also made their presence known at the net by putting down eight and seven respectively while Michie collected six kills. To have freshmen step up in their second career match and play with absolutely no fear is incredible, said Shondell. The skipper was also pleased with his floor general. At times, our offense was nearly perfect, and Taco was a huge part of that, noted Shondell. The sophomore setter finished with 34 assists. I ve never seen a Huntington team play as hard and as together as these guys did tonight. I couldn t be happier for our girls. Too many times, I ve seen our program come so close but come away empty handed. Tonight was different. Tonight they earned it. The Foresters (1-1) don t have too much time to relish in their big win as tomorrow morning they are back at it to face Life Pacific at 10:00 a.m. before taking on Brescia at 4:00 p.m. NEXT TIME OUT The Pilots take on No. 14 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) on Tuesday, August 21 at 5:00 pm in their 2018 debut at Morey Field on the campus of Bethel College.
