The Flames hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series after taking a three-game series between the two teams at Worthington Stadium in The Flames collected a season-high 14 hits and scored a season-high 14 runs in a 14-5 win over Virginia on Tuesday. With the win, Liberty remains unbeaten at Liberty Baseball Stadium at 9-0. The Flames will play 10 of their next 11 games at home to finish out the month of March. The Pride and Flames previously met in a three-game series at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg, Feb of The Flames took the first two games of the series, with the Pride taking the final contest. Hofstra enters the weekend with a 2-9 record. The Pride has played only one game at home. The Pride fell by identical 4-3 scores to Fordham, this past weekend. Hofstra is the second Colonial Athletic Association opponent for Liberty this season. The Flames swept Delaware in a three-game series at Liberty Baseball Stadium, Feb John Russo is in his 11th year as a member of the Hofstra staff and his eighth as the Pride's head coach. Karraker's Catch No. 1 on ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 In the top of the fourth inning of Liberty's win over Wake Forest at Liberty Baseball Stadium on Feb. 19, right fielder Ayden Karraker made a spectacular play, making a running catch of a foul ball, before flipping over the side fence and onto the grass berm. Televised by the Liberty Flames Sport Network on ESPN+, the video of the catch appeared on Major League Baseball's twitter and later was picked as the No. 1 play of the day by ESPN SportsCenter. Dandy Duo Right-handers Evan Brabrand and Garret Price have formed quite a bullpen duo for the Flames in the early stages of Entering the weekend, the two have combined to allow three runs over 34 innings and posted a 4-1 mark with six saves in 14 appearances. Brabrand has either recorded a victory or save in each of his six appearances. The redshirt senior has yet to allow a run in 15 innings of relief. He has struck out 25 batters and walked two. Meanwhile, Price has posted a 1.42 ERA over a team-high eight appearances. In 19 innings, the junior has struck out 20 and held opponents to a.175 batting average. He is the lone member of the Liberty mound staff who pitched in head coach Scott Jackson's first season in The duo has allowed two of the eight runners they have inherited to score. Brabrand Bats Come Alive Liberty collected a season-high 14 hits and scored a season-high 14 runs in its 14-5 win over Virginia, Tuesday. It is the second time this season that the Flames have had more than 10 hits in a contest. In the game, the host Flames sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, pounding out seven hits, including six extra base hits, and scoring seven runs. Five of the hits were doubles, while shortstop Cam Locklear, who had two hits and three RBI in the contest, belted a two-run home run in the inning. First baseman Logan Mathieu went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the contest. Center fielder Jaylen Guy added three hits and a double and scored two runs for the Flames. Artis Becomes Highest Draft Pick since 2004, Four Flames Drafted Outfielder D.J. Artis became the highest Liberty draft pick since 2004, as four Flames were selected in the 2018 Major League (MLB) First Year Player Draft, this past June. Pitchers Jack DeGroat and Jackson Bertsch and outfielder/catcher Tre Todd also heard their names called. The Chicago Cubs selected Artis in the seventh round, 218th overall, becoming the highest Liberty player taken in the draft since pitcher Jason Jones was selected by the New York Yankees in the fourth round with the 129th pick of the 2004 draft. DeGroat, who sat out 2018 due to injury, was selected in the 11th round by Cleveland, while Todd was choosen in the 21st by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bertsch was taken in the 29th by the New York Yankees. Liberty has had 68 players selected in the MLB Draft in program history. Six Flames have gone on to play with a major league level. 8 The Road to Liberty YEAR HEAD COACH SCOTT JACKSON CAREER RECORD LIBERTY RECORD ALMA MATER WIFE CHILDREN THIRD SAME Campbell '98 Sarah Ryan, Tyler No stranger to the Liberty baseball program, having served as the Flames pitching coach in 2008, Scott Jackson was named its seventh head coach in June of In his first two seasons at the helm, Liberty has been among the nation s top 50 teams in runs scored, on base percentage and walks at the end of its season. The Flames have finished each of the past two years in the top two in the country at the end of each of its season in bases on balls, finishing first in 2017 and second in In addition, Liberty led the Big South Conference in runs scored and on base percentage each year. The Flames have also made their mark in the classroom, posting cumulative team GPA s of 3.0 or better in each of Jackson s seasons at the helm. The 2017 team posted a 3.03 team GPA and had 17 players selected the Big South Presidential Honor Roll. The 2018 squad boasted 19 Big South Presidential Honor Roll members and a team GPA of Despite losing three experienced pitchers to injury early in the season, Jackson was able to guide Liberty to a overall mark and finish third in its final year in the Big South Conference with a record in Jackson s Flames set new single season program records for bases on balls (356), fewest errors (48) and fielding percentage (.977). In addition to runs scored and on base percentage, Liberty also led the Big South in RBI, doubles, triples and walks. Following the season, D.J. Artis and catcher/outfielder Tre Todd were named to the all-conference first team, while third baseman Tyler Galazin and pitcher Garret Price received all-conference honorable mention. Artis and Todd, along with pitchers Jack DeGroat and Jackson Bertsch went on to be selected in the 2018 MLB Draft. Artis became the highest Liberty draft pick since pitcher Jason Jones was taken by the New York Yankees in the fourht round of the 2004 draft. In 2017, Jackson led the Flames to a record and a second place finish in the Big South regular season standings with a 16-8 mark. Following the season, Jackson saw Artis named the 2017 Big South Player of the Year and earn selection to three different All- American teams. In addition, he saw pitcher Caleb Evans drafted by the Oakland A s in the MLB Draft. Artis led the nation in walks and finished second in on base percentage, while on the mound, the Liberty pitching staff allowed the fewest runs in the conference. During his one season with the Flames in 2008 as their pitching coach, Jackson helped Liberty post a record and a 14-7 mark in Big South play. Liberty was the No. 2 seed at the 2008 Big South Baseball Championship and advanced to the event's title game. Following the 2008 season, two of Jackson's pupils were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Left-hander Ryan Page was selected in the 20th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander David Stokes was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 28th round. In 2008, Jackson became an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina, where he spent eight seasons ( ). Jackson worked with the Tar Heels offense, as well as hitting, base running and infield play. During his eight seasons in Chapel Hill, N.C., Jackson helped North Carolina post a record, make three College World Series appearances (2009, 2011 and 2013), advance to six-straight NCAA Regionals ( ) and win the 2013 ACC Championship. Prior the 2013 season, Jackson was recognized by Baseball America as one of the top assistant coaches in the country. His efforts in building the Tar Heel roster and player development helped produce the most successful season in UNC Baseball history. The Tar Heels advanced to the College World Series and were one of the final three teams remaining in Omaha. The 2013 squad finished overall and 21-7 in ACC play, while recording Carolina s third ACC Championship. However, perhaps the biggest feat by the 2013 Tar Heels was that they never lost back-to-back games at any time during the season. During the Tar Heels' run to the 2011 College World Series, North Carolina had one of its top scoring seasons in school history. The Tar Heels finished the year ranked No. 10 in the country with 452 runs scored. After joining the coaching staff at North Carolina in July 2008, Jackson helped the Tar Heels have 44 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft including coaching and/or recruiting eight first round picks, 7 top five round picks, and 10 top 10 round picks. Prior to his single season at Liberty as pitching coach, Jackson served five seasons on the staff at UNC Wilmington as pitching coach ( ). The Seahawks posted a three-consecutive 40-win seasons and captured the Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2004 and Having never been to a regional in school history, UNC Wilmington also advanced to NCAA Regional from 2003 (Baton Rouge), 2004 (Kinston) and 2006 (Chapel Hill). Under Jackson's tutelage, six Seahawk pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft after going undrafted out of high school including Brad Holt who was a 1st Rd. pick in 2008 (33rd overall) by the New York Mets. His pitching staffs established a number of school records at Wilmington, including strikeouts and saves. Jackson also had coaching stints at Campbell (2002), Barton (2001) and Wofford (2000). In addition to his collegiate work, Jackson also spent two seasons with the Wilmington Sharks, where he was an assistant 2000 and Head Coach in He led the Sharks to a league-best mark in 2002 as head coach and coached five MLB draft picks. Jackson is a 1998 graduate of Campbell with a bachelor's degree in physical education and he earned a master's degree in education in 2000, also from Campbell. During his playing days with the Camels, he played seven different positions and posted a career.268 batting average in 182 games. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Jackson is married to the former Sara Moore, who was a standout basketball player at Campbell. The couple has two sons, Ryan and Tyler.
