The pilot stated that the craft shook roughly as he brought it into a safe landing in a front lawn at the corner of Arthur Avenue and Front Street. Damage to the overhead rotor was visible only with close inspection. The Ridgway fire department and West Penn Power were called to the scene around 1 p.m. on Wednesday as the lines continued to spark. There were no injuries and the helicopter was fully intact after the accident. Ridgway Fire Police Engine 43 and Brush 413 assisted on scene. In 1913, Copenhagen's Little Mermaid tatue, inspired by the Hans Christian ndersen story, was unveiled in the harbor f the Danish capital. In 1914, Japan declared war against ermany in World War I. In 1927, amid worldwide protests, talian-born anarchists Nicola Sacco and artolomeo Vanzetti were executed in oston for the murders of two men during 1920 robbery. (On the 50th anniversary of heir executions, then-massachusetts Gov. ichael Dukakis issued a proclamation hat Sacco and Vanzetti had been unfairly ried and convicted.) In 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet nion agreed to a non-aggression treaty, he Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, in Moscow. In 1960, Broadway librettist Oscar ammerstein (HAM'-ur-STYN') II, 65, died n Doylestown, Pennsylvania. In 2000, an estimated 51 million viewers tuned in for the finale of the first season of the CBS reality show "Survivor," in which contestant Richard Hatch won the 1 million prize. Ten years ago: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama introduced his choice of running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, before a crowd outside the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill. Two foreign journalists, Canadian Amanda Lindhout and Australian Nigel Brennan, were By RICH LOWRY A voice crying in the wilderness is supposed to be ignored, not rewarded with accolades and growing influence. Bernie Sanders is the prophet with honor in his own party. The former socialist gadfly is now the socialist trendsetter. At the moment, he has to be counted among the most successful ideological leaders in a generation in terms of moving the terms of the American political debate and putting previously discounted ideas on the agenda. This doesn't mean that he'll be the next Democratic nominee for president, or even run. It doesn't mean that his ideas are good (I personally consider them godawful). It does mean that when it comes to domestic policy on the left, it's Bernie's world, and the rest of the Democrats live in it. Sanders was an irrelevance for a couple of decades in Congress. He ran for president to get a higher profile, and succeeded not merely in that, but in seriously challenging Hillary Clinton. He is now a pacesetter in the party, while she rues what might have been. To be sure, much of this was inevitable. Whatever brake on the left Barack Obama represented was going to be released once he went home, especially if Democrats couldn't hold the White House. The advent of President Donald Trump pressed the accelerator on the party's radicalization. In 2016, though, Sanders embodied the first real political expression of a post-obama left that was disappointed by his alleged incrementalism and determined to move beyond it. Sanders' success represents a version of what has happened to centerleft parties around the West, as they have collapsed or been eclipsed by new forces. The Democrats aren't going anywhere, but Sanders is an interloper. Hillary Clinton is right when she complains that he's "not even a Democrat." This doesn't matter in the least to the Democrats in good standing who are vacuuming up Bernie's ideas. You can hardly be a U.S. senator who hopes to run for president if you aren't cosponsoring pillars of the Sanders agenda such as "Medicarefor-all," free college and the 15 minimum wage. "Just a few short years ago," Sanders crowed last year, "we were told that raising the minimum wage to 15 an hour was 'radical.'" Indeed, he was told that, and for good reason. But he had five co-sponsors for a 15 bill in 2015 and has a majority of Senate Democrats now. The Sanders policies are tangible and substantive (if misbegotten). Compare the period of Republican ferment when the party was out of power under Obama. The tea party, for better or worse, didn't have big, signature policy initiatives. Its candidates usually defined themselves by their tactical maximalism and their style, especially a contemptuous attitude toward the establishment. This is why it slid so easily into Trumpism. Bernie's own political future is cloudy. If he runs again, he won't have Clinton as a foil, but numerous contenders who want to ape his substance as younger, less quirky, more polished candidates. Significantly, Sanders is a laggard when it comes to identity politics, which is becoming even more important to Democrats in reaction to Trump. A 76-year-old male from the kidnapped near Mogadishu, Somalia; both were freed after 15 months in captivity. At the Beijing Olympics, the United States won gold in the women's and men's 1,600-meter relay track events. The U.S. women's basketball team beat Australia to win a fourth straight gold medal. Angel Matos of Cuba and his coach were banned for life after the taekwondo athlete kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification. Five years ago: A military jury convicted Maj. Nidal Hasan in the deadly 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, that claimed 13 lives; the Army psychiatrist was later sentenced to death. Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the U.S. soldier who'd massacred 16 Afghan civilians, was sentenced at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, to life in prison with no chance of parole. San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, a Democrat, agreed to resign in return for the city's help defending him against claims he'd groped, kissed and made lewd comments to women. (Filner later pleaded guilty to a felony for manhandling a woman at a fundraising event and two misdemeanor battery charges; he served three months of house arrest.) One year ago: City workers in Charlottesville, Virginia, draped giant black covers over two statues of Confederate generals to symbolize the city's mourning for a woman killed while protesting a white nationalist rally. A federal judge again blocked a set of voter ID requirements in Texas, rejecting a weakened version that had been backed by the Trump administration. (An appeals court later allowed the law to stay in effect; it allows voters without any acceptable photo ID to cast a ballot as long as they sign an affidavit.) Thought for Today: "I know the world is filled with troubles and many injustices. But reality is as beautiful as it is ugly. I think it is just as important to sing about beautiful mornings as it is to talk about slums. I just couldn't write anything without hope in it." Oscar Hammerstein II ( ). whitest state in the union, who has devoted his life to a rigorously classbased politics, can do his best to play along but will never be a natural. The voters, in the Democratic primaries and the next presidential election, will obviously have a say, and they can upset expectations. A few years ago, Paul Ryan developed a thorough, coherent approach to the debt that seemed to define the future of Republican policy, before Trump blew right through it. Few When it comes to child sexual abuse, we are out of forgiveness Although the grand jury report s findings have been speculated upon for months, the details it reveals of systemic and widespread sexual abuse of children by priests and the cover-up of that abuse - in six dioceses in Pennsylvania are shocking and deeply offensive. Childhood should be a time of innocence. Those who perpetrated these crimes were supposed to be pillars of goodness, kindness, mercy, and trust. Instead, they were pedophiles, predators, and thieves stealing the precious wonder of our children something that can never be returned. There are lessons in this report for members of every faith and those who hold no religious beliefs. Chief among them is holding ourselves and others accountable to follow the safeguards lawmakers enacted after the Sandusky scandal in the form of amendments to our state s Child Protective Services Law. Adults who care for our children must be vetted through background and criminal history checks, and obtain all required state and federal child abuse clearances. Organizations and institutions must have strong policies and practices that prohibit one adult with one child and rather must embrace a two-deep leadership philosophy. Finally, all staff and volunteers must have comprehensive training on child abuse recognition and reporting at the point of hire and ongoing through professional development opportunities. Parents must not be passive and assume those professionals who interact with their children are safe. They must take it upon themselves to ask to see the clearances and evidence that policies for maximum child protection are in place. Be engaged. Be proactive. Be vigilant. Your children s innocence and safety demand nothing less. The sad reality is that child abuse touches every community in Pennsylvania. And, as documented in the most recent PA Dept. of Human Services Child Protective Services Annual Report, child sexual abuse is involved in nearly half of the substantiated cases of child abuse in our state. Caseworkers documented more than 3,400 cases of child sexual abuse in 2017 alone. In Elk County, the latest figures from the state Department of Human Services show there were 29 substantiated allegations of child abuse in 2017, 18 (62.1 percent) of which involved the sexual abuse of children. It s not just happening in Catholic parishes. Child sexual abuse can and does happen anywhere. As community members, we each have a role to play in making sure that kids are safe. When children tell PENNSYLVANIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY (Elk County) Matt Gabler ST. Who knows how it shakes out for Bernie Sanders two or three years from now? When something strikes you as odd about how a child is being treated, don t dismiss the hunch or your gut feeling. Make a report to ChildLine by calling Last year, 8,482 permissive reporters average Pennsylvanians, not mandated reporters, made a report. We know that those folks made the difference in saving the lives of some of the 88 children who nearly died of abuse. Forty other abused kids were not so fortunate. They died from maltreatment. I also encourage you to take part in an awareness program like the Front Porch Project offered by PFSA. Through interactive discussions and real-life scenarios, the Front Porch Project teaches neighbors how to defuse potentially dangerous situations involving children. To deepen your understanding of how to recognize and report suspected child abuse, consider taking a Mandated Reporter Training (MRT) course. Mandated reporters are professionals and volunteers who are required under state law to report suspected abuse. PFSA offers comprehensive and convenient bilingual MRT classes on-line, on-demand, or in-person. Lawyer: Suspect in anti-gay killing struggled with sexuality NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) A California man denied Wednesday that he killed a University of Pennsylvania student because the victim was gay. Samuel Woodward, 21, who has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge, appeared in court and also denied a hate-crime allegation connected to the killing of 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein, the Orange County Register reported. Bernstein's body was found in a shallow grave in January at a park near his parents' Lake Forest home. Investigators reviewed Woodward's cellphone, laptop, and social media accounts, and found hateful material against a range of groups and substantial evidence that Bernstein was killed because he was gay, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said earlier this month. Woodward's lawyer, Edward Munoz, told the newspaper that Woodward suffers from a "serious mental disorder" and struggled with his own sexual identity. The attorney said Woodward has Asperger syndrome, a developmental disorder that generally causes difficulty with social interactions. Munoz told BuzzFeed News that his client "has a lot of issues, I think, around sexual orientation." "There's going to be some evidence that comes out that shows he's very confused," he said. Bernstein who attended the same high school as Woodward disappeared in January while visiting his family on winter break. His body was found nearly a week later buried in a shallow grave at a neighborhood park where he went with Woodward on the night he disappeared. Woodward told investigators that he became angry after Bernstein kissed him that night, according to a court filing obtained by the Orange County Register after the killing. A preliminary hearing in the case was postponed Wednesday. Woodward could face a sentence of life without parole if convicted. ST. MARYS MONUMENTS LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED SUSIE & DONNY (FLIP) BOBENRIETH 148 TIMBERLINE ROAD Did You Know? A weekly look back into the history of Ridgway Merchant prince and namesake of Ridgway By Bob Imhof Special to the Record Jacob Ridgway - Merchant Prince and Namesake of Ridgway, Elk County. Born in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey on April 18, Son of John and Phoebe Bellangee Ridgway and youngest of five children. John was a farmer and known as Gentleman John. The original American Ridgway family arrived in Pennsylvania prior to William Penn and lived in Bristol, Bucks County and were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Jacob Ridgway was the youngest great-grandson of the pioneer Ridgway family. The family name was originally spelled Ridgeway. John Ridgway died in 1774 when Jacob was six years old on the death of his mother, he moved to Philadelphia to live with his oldest brother John, only nineteen years of age. Jacob s first mercantile career began in the dry goods house of Thomas Shaw and Shaw s son. In 1794 at age 26 he left the employ of the Shaw s and went into partnership with his brother-in-law James Smith in a grocery store on Water Street. The shipping business was of great interest to Mr. Ridgway and in partnership with James Smith the firm of Smith & Ridgway was created. This partnership was very successful but problems between England and France caused their ships to be seized. Due to these problems Mr. Ridgway moved with his family to London, England to protect his business assets, represent other American businesses, and established a partnership titled Merton and Ridgway while retaining his business interests in Philadelphia. Mr. Ridgway traveled extensively in England, France and Belgium developing his business network in Europe, and finally settled in Antwerp, Belgium where he lived until 1813 prior to returning to the United States and retiring from business. His residence in Philadelphia was across the street from Independence Hall on Chestnut Street. While residing in Antwerp, Mr. Ridgway served as United States Consul while developing his shipping business empire. In 1817, Mr. Ridgway Photo submitted Jacob Ridgway, purchased in excess of 100,000 acres of land in Northwestern Pennsylvania the bulk of which was in McKean County and 40,000 acres that would become part of Elk County in 1843 when the county was established from pieces of Clearfield, Jefferson and McKean counties. At the time of this huge land purchase as a result of the 1784 Treaty of Fort Stanwix (now Rome, New York), Mr. Ridgway s personal wealth was estimated at 6,000,000, making him the second richest man in Pennsylvania after Steven Girard, and fifth richest man in the United States. Mr. Ridgway hired three agents to look after this land purchase including Jonathan Colegrove, Jr., who handled the selling of the lands in McKean County; Paul W. Skull, who handled the selling of the lands in the Bradford area; and most notable, James Lyle Gillis. Jacob Ridgway married Rebecca Rawle in 1794 and they had five children, Suzannah, Phoebe Ann, Benjamin, John Jacob and Caroline. Mr. Ridgway died on April 30, 1843, just twelve days after the formal creation of Elk County. Jacob Ridgway s will consisted of 57 parts and to his daughter, Suzannah Ridgway Rotch Barton, he bequeathed the County Seat of Clermont, his summer residence situated in the Northern Liberties of the City of Philadelphia near the Delaware River. The small town of Clermont located in McKean County, Pennsylvania is named for Mr. Ridgway s summer home. James Lyle Gillis was bequeathed the Montmorenci Farm of 400 acres that he established for Mr. Ridgway beginning on December 21, His son, John Jacob Ridgway, received the land where Ridgway is now situated and practically half of McKean County and the entire land from Johnsonburg up through Instanter, Glen Hazel and Clermont almost to the New York State Line. The Crusaders are scheduled to host the Ridgway Elkers on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Leaning Pines Golf Course at 3:30 p.m. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Ohio State on Wednesday night suspended head football coach Urban Meyer three games for mishandling domestic violence accusations, punishing one of the sport s most prominent leaders for keeping an assistant on staff for several years after the coach s wife accused him of abuse. The move followed a two-week investigation into how Meyer reacted to accusations that former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith abused his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Zach Smith was fired last month after she asked a judge for a protective order. Courtney Smith alleged her husband shoved her against a wall and put his hands around her neck in The university put Meyer on paid leave and began its investigation after Courtney Smith spoke out publicly, sharing text messages and photos she traded in 2015 with Meyer s wife, Shelley Meyer. Shelley Meyer is a registered nurse and instructor at Ohio State. I followed my heart and not my head, Meyer said, quickly reading a written statement to reporters during a news conference after his punishment was announced. I should have demanded more from him and recognized red flags. Trustees discussed the decision to punish Meyer in a marathon meeting of more than 12 hours Wednesday while Meyer awaited the decision. Athletic director Gene Smith who is not related to Zach or Courtney Smith was also suspended from Aug. 31 through Sept. 16. Both the athletic director and Meyer apologized and said they accepted the punishments. I should have done Thinking of Buying or Selling? Give Us A Call! Anderson & Kime Realty Services, Inc and ext 102 more and I am sorry for that, Meyer said. Meyer will miss Ohio State s first three games against Oregon State, Rutgers and No. 16 TCU. The investigation prompted Meyer to insist he followed proper protocols after learning of the 2015 accusations. But he also acknowledged lying to reporters a week earlier when he said he hadn t heard of the incident until shortly before he fired Zach Smith. The probe directly centered on the question of what Meyer knew and when. Meyer said in his tweet that he always elevated issues through the proper channels, and did so with the Smith situation in That contradicted what he told reporters at Big Ten media day a week earlier: I was never told about anything and nothing ever came to light. I ve never had a conversation about it. I know nothing about it. Speaking after the investigation was announced, Zach Smith said he spoke with Meyer at the time and that Smith also knew about the allegations. Zach Smith said Meyer told him he would be fired if the head coach found out Smith had hit his wife. Zach Smith the grandson of late Ohio State coach and Meyer mentor Earle Bruce has never been criminally charged or convicted of abuse. He has a charge of criminal trespass pending, and the Smiths are due in court next month for a hearing on a restraining order Courtney Smith was granted July 20. Meyer is heading into his seventh season at Ohio State, where he is 73-8 with a national title in 2014 and two Big Ten Conference championships. The Cubs had scored exactly one run in each of their previous five games. David Bote ended that streak with a two-run homer in the fifth, and Lester (14-5) allowed a run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. Five Chicago relievers finished. Pedro Strop came in with the bases loaded in the eighth and walked in a run, but he retired James McCann on a grounder to end that threat with the Cubs still up 4-2. Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive homers in the ninth for Chicago to break the game open. Baez s drive, a three-run shot, was his 26th of the year. Francisco Liriano (3-9) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Daniel Murphy singled home a run in the fifth in his first game with the Cubs after being acquired in a trade from Washington on Tuesday. Lester, who pitched six innings in a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh last Thursday, was sharp again in Detroit. He allowed an RBI single to Ronny Rodriguez in the second, but that was all the scoring against him for Detroit. Liriano didn t get out of the second inning in his previous start, but he blanked Chicago for the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. The first six Chicago hitters of that inning reached base, and Bote s drive put the Cubs up 2-1, snapping an 0-for- 16 drought for the Chicago third baseman. Murphy added his RBI single, although a baserunning blunder by Willson Contreras and a doubleplay grounder by Rizzo helped Liriano escape the inning with only three runs in. Cervelli. The Pirates have scored just 16 runs in their last 10 games, going 2-8. Williams had another strong outing, permitting one run and two hits in six innings, but again was hurt by a lack of run support. Bogaerts hits two solo home runs, Red Sox beat Indians 10-4 BOSTON (AP) Xander Bogaerts hit two solo homers, Andrew Benintendi had a three-run double to cap a big fourth inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 10-4 on Wednesday night to halt their threegame losing streak. Mitch Moreland added a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who lost the previous two nights in a matchup of AL division leaders. East-leading Boston, which owns the majors best record, is the only MLB team without a fourgame losing streak this season. Edwin Encarnacion hit a pair of two-run homers in his first game off the disabled list for Central-leading Cleveland. The Indians are 17-5 on the road since July 1. Matt Barnes (5-3) pitched a hitless inning of relief and was credited with the victory after starter Brian Johnson was pulled with the Red Sox leading and one out in the fifth. Johnson gave up three runs. Carlos Carrasco (15-7) was tagged for six runs, five earned, in 3 2/3 innings. Bogaerts tied it 2-all in the fourth by hitting his first shot completely out of Fenway Park over the Green Monster. The Red Sox took the lead with three singles on Carrasco s next three pitches; Ian Kinsler, Brock Holt, and Blake Swihart s RBI hit. Following a walk to Mookie Betts, Benintendi sliced his liner down the left-field line, making it 6-2. Moreland s homer made it 8-4. Bogaerts hit his second one in the seventh. Sidelined since Aug. 12 with a right wrist contusion, Encarnacion hit the third pitch he saw into the last row of Monster seats in the first. His second was a drive off a billboard above the Monster. Carrasco had been on a roll, going 7-1 with a 1.73 ERA since coming off the disabled list July 6, but he fell to 1-3 with a 7.47 ERA in his career against Boston. ADDING UP Boston s J.D. Martinez raised his major leagueleading RBI total to 108 with two RBI singles. HOT STARTS The Indians hit their club-record 28th first-inning homer this season, breaking the mark of 27 set last year. STAYING COOL Red Sox manager Alex Cora joked before the game about calls he received regarding the team s losing streak. I got a few phone calls from people around the league like, Wow, threegame losing streak, he said. (Houston manager) A.J. Hinch was one of them. He was laughing about it. We talked about it a little bit. The way I see it is if this is the second three-game losing streak for us, we re in a good place. TRAINER S ROOM Indians: Placed OF Rajai Davis on the 10- day disabled list with a non-life-threatening medical condition. He s expected to have outpatient surgery Monday and return when rosters are expended on Sept Manager Terry Francona said Leonys Martin will sit out the rest of the season. The outfielder had a life-threatening bacterial infection that entered his bloodstream and created toxins that damaged his internal organs, compromising their function. Red Sox: Cora said C Christian Vazquez (DL, fractured right pinkie) might catch LHP Eduardo Rodriguez s next rehab start on Monday at Double-A Portland. UP NEXT Indians: RHP Adam Plutko (4-3, 4.62) is slated to make his first career start against the Red Sox in the series finale Thursday afternoon. Red Sox: LHP David Price (13-6, 3.69) looks to continue his recent success. He s 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA since the All-Star break. Zimmerman hits 2-run home run in ninth, Nats beat Phillies 8-7 WASHINGTON (AP) Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Washington Nationals to an 8-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Juan Soto s two-double against Seranthony Dominguez (1-4) set up Zimmerman. His drive landed just above the right-field wall and required review before the umpire crew acknowledged the homer. Zimmerman has 11 walk-off home runs for his career. Maikel Franco, Justin Bour and Cesar Hernandez homered for the Phillies, who led 7-5 in the seventh. Philadelphia, which has lost nine of 13, fell three games behind NL East-leading Atlanta. Stephen Strasburg allowed five runs and seven hits over four innings for Washington in his first start since being placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 26 with a cervical nerve impingement. Bryce Harper went 3 for 4 with a run-scoring double and a stolen base for Washington. Matt Grace (1-1) worked 1/3 of an inning for Washington, which has won two in a row since trading second baseman Daniel Murphy and key reserve Matt Adams on Tuesday. Pinch-hitter Andrew Stevenson s sacrifice fly in the eighth cut the Phillies lead to 7-6. The Yankees managed only one extra-base hit against five Miami pitchers. They committed three errors and struck out 11 times in a defeat that ended their four-game winning streak. Giancarlo Stanton, playing in Miami for the first time since the Marlins traded him last November, went 1 for 3 with an RBI and finished 3 for 9 in the series. He remained at 299 career homers. Lynn (8-9) had a 2-0 lead in the sixth, but Miguel Rojas three-run homer put the Marlins ahead. The homer was the 10th for Rojas, who had never hit more than one in a season before this year. Attendance was 25,547, including lots of Yankees fans, and many of them had departed by the time Miami s J.T. Riddle delivered a two-run, pinchhit homer in the eighth. Chapman joined three injured regulars on the Yankees disabled list, and their offense looked depleted during the two-game series. They totaled 10 hits in the final 17 innings against Miami. Neil Walker drove in two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly, and Stanton had an RBI infield hit in the seventh.

Races Continued from Page 1 proceeds, to the St. Marys Airport Authority for the general upkeep of the facility. To date, the races have brought in approximately 25,000. The drag races returned to the St. Marys Airport after a 10 year hiatus. Everybody was really excited. You could tell by the first attendance, said Tom Catalone, drag race organizer. Fans specifically enjoy seeing the burnouts at the start of the races. New stipulations required the airport to obtain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and PennDOT Bureau of Aviation. Its a new ball game with the FAA and PennDOT, noted Matt Box, airport manager. The drag races began at the airport in 1998 and in 2002 the committee took measures to ensure there would be no potential hiccups in hosting the event. They did so by installing concrete pads for burnout and launching. The committee only paid for the concrete with all other materials and services being donated. We wanted to be responsible for the areas that we are using, Catalone said. St. Marys is the only airport in the state that holds races on a federal and state airport. Box explained a representative from PennDOT s Bureau of Aviation paid a surprise visit to the airport during the June race and had high praise for everyone s efforts. They re seeing how broke airports are and these races are ways to raise money for them, Box said. This year, the committee helped construct return roads for racers and a spectator entrance. Catalone said all services were donated including those from RJ Vollmer, DeLullo Stone and Sale, and Nero Excavating. The spectator entrance has helped drastically as there was a significant wait time for vehicles attending the first race, however after the entrance was put in, the wait time decreased. It is estimated there were 1,400 spectator vehicles parked during the first race. The nice thing is now those roads are permanently part of the airport that we can use, Box said. Catalone added the races have really brought the community together. Among the infrastructure the drag race committee s donation will help fund are rebuilding of sewer grinders, and extensive repair airport hangers which have not been repaired in decades, among others. These will all make it a more viable airport, Box said. He added it is imperative for the airport to keep their operating costs low. Gates open at 10 a.m. with races starting at 1 p.m. and concluding at 5 p.m. Admission is 10 per person or 25 per car load of five people. Various food vendors will be on hand along with specials being offered by the airport s West Wind restaurant. A tasting booth offering beer and wine samplings from local businesses will also be set up at the event. Catalone noted the open container law is also lifted during the races. The airport s main hanger will be open for spectators, allowing them a place to eat or to get out of the sun. Spectators are permitted to bring chairs, food and beverages. Several additional vendors will also be showcasing their products. Helicopter rides will be available from pilot Denny Caruso. Monster truck rides by Rick Krishart of Kersey were a big hit in the past with spectators of all ages. Rides are for a donation. The truck can carry eight people and lasts seven minutes. The races are open to anyone meeting the necessary requirements. The fee to race is 20. Racers may choose their opponents and race as many times as they would like to throughout the duration of the event. Catalone noted the only prize at stake is bragging rights, although the first 50 racers on Sunday will receive an event decal. As a safety rule, each vehicle undergoes a tech inspection which includes checking for leaks, that the battery is properly installed and secured, and that the vehicle is equipped with a drive shaft loop. In addition, all drivers must wear a helmet. A timing system prints out racers results including their personal best speed and reaction time. A total of 300 racers have participated in the event. It is really like a moving car show, Box said. Catalan praised the work of the 50 volunteers make the races possible. The committee dedicated the first races of the season to the late Joe Bologna, former airport manager. 10 10 COPYRIGHT 2016 CREATORS SYNDICATE, INC. Dear Annie: I m not writing in about any problem you can solve. This letter is about a much bigger problem -- namely, the state of the world today. It s impossible to turn on the news without getting depressed, whether because of natural disasters or the bitter state of politics in our country. Addiction to alcohol, opioids and other drugs is rampant, and everyone is addicted to smartphones. No one can civilly disagree anymore. People are ruder than ever. And from the way things are going, it seems everything will just continue to get worse. It makes me glad I decided not to have children. It seems as if the end of the world is imminent, and at this point, I d welcome it. When did things start going so wrong? How is anyone supposed to care about anything these days? -- Realist, Not Pessimist Dear Realist, Not Pessimist: What s the use in scrutinizing the world s problems if you have no intention of being part of the solutions? That attitude contributes nothing but stomach ulcers. Volunteer with an organization you believe in; organize neighborhood cleanups. If you re down in the dumps, try therapy. Even if you re not down in the dumps, try therapy. Go out and be the change you want to see in the world, or at least change the way you see the world. You can weed your garden by digging up every plant you don t want or by looking at the dandelions differently. Dear Annie: I have been meaning to send you a follow-up note about a situation you helped me with a little over a year ago. I initially wrote to you about my family s gift-giving tradition during the holidays and how it was, well, basically sending me to the poorhouse because of new additions to the family, such as new babies and significant others. Your advice was spot on. You suggested that I speak with my siblings, as you had a feeling that I was not the only one affected by our growing family. I was prepared to speak with my family at our next family gathering, and I was pleasantly surprised. Two of my sisters had had a conversation about this very thing and approached us all with a new gift-giving plan that worked out well for our entire family. So you were right. I was not the only one feeling the pinch. I am happy to report that we have incorporated the new plan and, as a result, none of us is spending as much money as before. After all, the holidays should be for the gathering of family and being grateful for one another. We have been able to get back to that, and I wanted to thank you for your help. -- Not Broke Anymore Dear Not Broke Anymore: I am so glad to hear that the situation solved itself and that you indeed were not the only one thinking it was time for a change. Knights of Columbus leader urges church reforms after abuse HARTFORD, Conn. AP) The leader of the orld's largest Roman atholic fraternal group s condemning clergy sex buse and calling for reorms in the church, inluding a renewed commitent to celibacy by priests. Carl Anderson, sureme knight of the New aven, Connecticut-based nights of Columbus, ade the comments in hat appeared to be an unsual letter to the group's early 2 million members n Tuesday. "These sins of commision and omission have ent the Church we love, he Church we serve and he Church that Jesus hrist established into onvulsions," Anderson rote. "Sadly, the disgrace ot only is borne by the erpetrators, it hurts us ll, as does the silence of hepherds who have igored the cries of their ocks." To be sure, the Knights f Columbus hasn't been noculated from the sex buse scandal that's rocked he global Catholic Church n recent years. The organization was ued in 2010 by two men ho said a former leader of he Columbian Squires he Knights' official youth rogram abused them n Texas in the 1970s and 980s. Burial will follow in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Cash Match Treasure Hunt Advanced Chiropractic had passed. Anderson in his letter didn't touch on those allegations and instead focused on more recent revelations, including sexual abuse allegations against retired archbishop of Washington, Theodore McCarrick, and a grand jury report accusing church leaders of covering up the abuse of more than 1,000 children or teenagers by some 300 Catholic priests in Pennsylvania since the 1940s. He said the Knights of Columbus must "commit to work for repentance, reform and rebuilding of the Church," including a full accounting of the abuse by the perpetrators. "Archbishop McCarrick and others at fault owe us a full account of their actions, motivations and cover-ups," Anderson wrote. "After years of having us confess to them, it is now time for them to come clean about what they have done and what they have failed to do." He also wrote, "The sexual acts both criminal and non-criminal highlight the need to recover a respect for and a renewed commitment to the priestly promises of celibacy... Moreover, priests and bishops who refuse to live according to their promises of celibacy should be removed from public ministry, not out of retribution, but for the protection of the faithful and to prevent future variations of the scandal we now suffer." McCarrick has said he is innocent. Two months ago, Pope Francis ordered McCarrick removed from public ministry amid allegations the 88-year-old retired archbishop sexually abused a teenage altar boy and engaged in sexual misconduct with adult seminarians decades ago. Last month, the pope accepted McCarrick's resignation as cardinal and ordered him to a "life of prayer and penance." In the wake of the grand jury report issued earlier this month on the sexual abuse by Pennsylvania priests, Francis said Monday that "no effort must be spared" to root out priestly sex abuse and cover-up from the church. He begged for forgiveness for the pain suffered by the victims, and criticized church leaders for being more concerned about their reputations than children's safety. Spokesmen for the Vatican on Wednesday did not immediately return a message seeking a response to Anderson's letter. Anderson called for reforms including an investigation of clergy sex abuse by an independent commission that includes laypeople, transparency by church leaders on all matters of criminal sexual misconduct and an independent ethics hotline for the reporting of misconduct. St.Marys Friday 9a-8p, Sat 9a-3p Experts: Status check systems easy to exploit MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) The systems offered by the U.S. government to check the legal status of workers like the Mexican man now suspected of killing an Iowa college student can be easily exploited through identity fraud and gaps in government systems, experts say. In the case of Cristhian Bahena Rivera, the 24-year-old now charged with murder in the death of Mollie Tibbetts, Rivera's exemployer said Wednesday he provided an out-of-state ID card and Social Security number. He worked at Yarrabee Farms for almost four years under a false name, said Dane Lang, part of the family that owns the dairy. Yarrabee Farms did not use the federal E-Verify program, Lang said Wednesday, correcting information he had given a day earlier. Instead, the company used the Social Security Administration's verification service. The family is now looking into adopting E-Verify, he said. Both E-Verify and the Social Security Administration's program, immigration experts say, can be beaten with a state ID and a Social Security number belonging to someone else. There is a thriving black market for forged or stolen identity documents. And while employers are supposed to check those documents, they are barred by federal law from refusing to accept an ID card that meets legal requirements for employment. They are required to reject documents that do not "reasonably appear to be genuine," but those can be hard to catch. separated by a divider, such as concrete barriers or grass medians. Even in this situation, motorists should remain watchful of students trying to cross the road to catch the bus. City police note this applies to all four-lane sections of the Million Dollar Highway including those with a center turning lane. According to PennDOT, if convicted of violating Pennsylvania s school bus stopping law, drivers face a 250 fine, five points on their driving record and a 60-day license suspension. Students are also exposed to traffic while waiting for buses or walking to the bus stop or school. Motorists are reminded to be cautious and alert when approaching a school bus stop and to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Giving You Something to Smile About! K & C DENTURE CENTERS, INC.
