1 AUTUMN 2012 Hello, I wonder if you have begun to get over the excitement of the last few of months? As the days get shorter we can warm ourselves with the memories of the most wonderful results of our Olympic and Paralympic Riders. It has been truly amazing, history being made and the 'Great' being put back into Britain. It is difficult to get back to reality and once again tackle the everyday jobs! I would very much like to thank Mandy for all her guidance, our Committee for the tireless work they do, our County Co- Ordinators who organise so many different events throughout our Region and all of you for Forget the Rest South West is Best responding with so much enthusiasm. SW is buzzing at the moment with a lot happening giving us some great results. In 2013 we will be having a change on our Committee, Juliet Seal who has been our Para Rep for the last 8 years and has come to the end of her Term of Office, is being replaced by Nick Rodgers. We would like to thank Juliet for everything she has done for Para SW and welcome Nick to our Region. There are still many events to look forward to until the end of the year, (please see Speedy News). 2 AUTUMN 2012 Judges News... Congratulations! TO OUR NEW SW PARA JUDGES! Alicia Anderson List 3A Claire Speer List 3 Sarah-Jane Prew List 3 Nicky du Plessis List 3A Judge Training has been very active during the last six months. We have held some Mock Exams and Training at various levels. Unfortunately some has been cancelled due to lack of support. It does seem difficult to arrange the sessions to fit in with everyone s diaries but we continue to try and do our best. Judge Training is done at competitions and at venues where we can be discreet and where there are enough competitors in the classes. We also rely on the availability of Trainer Judges to take these sessions. This training is partially funded by British Dressage to help educate and develop our judges. BD Members who are not on a judges list are welcome to attend if there is sufficient space and if the level is appropriate, if you are interested please contact Mandy Heath. As this training is funded in this way priority is given to judges, trainee judges, potential judges and riders. It is not possible to accommodate anybody who is not a British Dressage Member as we are so fortunate having this as a Member Benefit. In the spring we held a very successful Trainee Judges Seminar at Tall Trees in Cornwall. We were fortunate that Andrew Gardner came all the way down from Wales to host the day and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the many participants. These Trainee Judge Seminars are open to ALL judges but also potential judges who simply pay a small additional fee to attend. Watch the calendar for 2013 as we are hoping to soon be able to release the date and venue of this annual event. Other Training in the Region included Penelope Lang running a Scales of Training evening, which was well attended. I have been taking monthly Training for all levels at Frances Turner s and we are grateful to Frances for hosting this. These will continue over the winter months. Training is already organised from now into next year, so please do not leave it too late to put your name down. I would ask you to please let us know if you are planning to come to training (even if you end up not coming) as far in advance as possible as it helps with the planning! We have Mock Exams from Novice to Prix St Georges scheduled for Spring 2013, and if anyone has ideas for future events please let Mandy or myself know so we can try to accommodate your needs. 3 British Dressage Northern Region Inter- Regional Judges Quiz 2013 Monday 27 th May at Willerby Hill, Willerby, East Yorkshire, HU10 6NT 12:30pm 5pm The British Dressage Northern Region invites teams of BD Listed, Trainee Judges and riders to the annual Inter- Regional Judges Quiz. Regions are able to send a maximum of 3 teams. Each team must consist of a 4 judges plus a rider (BD member). Each Team enters under their team name which can be as inventive as they like! There will be 100 questions divided in to 10 categories which equestrian and general knowledge being 2 of the categories. Each team will be able to use their Joker Card for one category. This will give double points for each correct answer. The Joker card cannot be used for the General Knowledge or Equestrian category. After each category answers will be collected, passed on to another team and marked. A running score will be kept for each team. In the event of a tie the team with the highest score in the General Knowledge category will be the winner. There will be a welcome reception along with a buffet after the quiz. Families and Friends are welcome and additional meal tickets can be purchased Entry Fee - 25 per team This event is not subsidized by BD SW Region This includes welcome reception, drinks and buffet for all team members Additional tickets for the buffet - 7 per person Please make cheques payable to British Dressage. As long as they attend a training session at the correct level then that will be sufficient (the session doesn t have to be taken by an FEI judge) All judge training is 12 per session/level. 7 County Round-Up s AUTUMN 2012 Avon Sharon Butterworth Its been a fantastic first season for me as Avon County Coordinator. All our clinics have been well attended, with the test riding clinics proving very popular. Hopefully we have had something for everyone with clinics from eventer Ben Greenwood and International rider Maria Eilberg to name a few. The inter-county challenge was a great day with Avon having 3 teams in the top 5! We hope to improve on this for next year, so get practising and look out for our viewing days planned for early 2013! We will continue with our test riding clinics, including some focusing on Eventers which are looking to improve their percentages, we are also planning some workshops for those of you re-training Racehorses. Hopefully this will help motivate you to try and qualify for the BD Retraining Racehorses Dressage series. It has been great to meet with so many new faces, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions on what you would like to see happening in the Avon area and I will do my utmost to support you! Carrie Strange Devon The summer has been very busy with clinics full to bursting point Tessa must be so exhausted! It is lovely to have met so many new faces in the region and interest is growing. If members in Devon wish to be kept up to date with activities, please me (carrie.payne@btinternet.com) and I will add you to my mailing list. In addition to training with Tessa Thorne and Lorna George, Sue Petty prepared a brilliant evening last month exploring the meaning of judges comments. A huge thank you goes to Suzanne Belina for coming up with the idea more thoughts please for what you would like to see organised in Devon. Suzanne sent us this quote! "I am very grateful to Sue for explaining these commonly used terms so clearly and in a language which I could understand! I see from a recent thread on the BD forum (where someone has asked exactly what the term "throughness" meant) that I was not alone in my confusion. The point which really came over for me was the need to have connection from behind even at prelim level". Over the winter months we are planning evenings focussing on rider fitness and sports phycology, fitness in the dressage horse and equine physiotherapy more to follow. Tessa Thorne will continue to visit South and East Devon and Lorna George North Devon details will be ed out but please book early as places have been taken and a waiting list operated. I am so proud to see so many Devon members now coming forward and participating in regional team activities you all need to start thinking of your goals for 2013 guys! By the time you are reading this, Peter Storr will have made his second visit to Devon the two day clinics are extremely popular and Peter s training is fantastic. I am hoping to persuade him to visit again through the winter months. Keep a look out on the web site for future date. With sadness we have accepted the resignation of Carrie Payne as Devon County Co Ordinator. We have been running various clinics for members and non members since the last newsletter in February. Remember, all clinics noted on the BD SW website will count towards eligibility for selection for Regional teams. Lynne Baldwin, BHSI & List 2 BD Judge has been holding monthly Dressage Test Riding Clinics at Moreton EC and Alicia Anderson s Unaffiliated Dressage Judge Training Clinics have now moved from the bus at Moreton to the much cosier setting of Alicia s house at Middlemarsh near Sherborne. They run as a Theory and DVD evening from Prelim to Elementary level and all are welcome cost 15. For the next dates see our Speedy news or go online to the full events calendar. Andrew Harris is running clinics at Higher Merley Farm near Wimborne. Book through either Liz or Mandy Heath. Matt Hicks, current Medium Open and Medium FSM Champions from Hartpury in April this year held a clinic at Moreton EC on Monday 29 th October Please check our online calendar for further dates. Moreton hosted a second BD Have A Go Day on Saturday 10 th November with Lynne Baldwin and Sue Petty. The last day saw over 30 riders taking part with a high proportion of them joining BD on the day. We will be holding a County viewing day for those interested in being on a Dorset Team (you should reside in Dorset for the Dorset Team!) early in 2013 Please me to note interest and what level you are eligible to compete at. 9 AUTUMN 2012 At the end of this year I retire as Para Rep for the S.W. after nearly eight years in a fast-growing para environment. From a start of nothing we have developed a programme with training sessions at various venues spread out around this vast region, trying to go where we know we have potential para riders. The intent has been to enable them to come into para competition with a good knowledge of what is required and an idea of how to organise themselves for competing. Nina Venables, who trains Deb Criddle, is our regional Coach and very engaged in all we do. My job is to liaise between the Regional Committee and the BD Para Committee and ensure that the region fulfils its obligations to para riders. To this end I have driven many miles both to attend our training and to Stoneleigh to report. I am very often the first point of contact for new riders and have had many long phone calls to help them find their way into the system. Sometimes they come, sometimes we never hear from them again but I learn something new from every enquiry, I have met many wonderful and determined people in this way and for me this has been the most rewarding aspect of the job. My successor, Nick Rodgers was appointed during the summer and we will be working together through the autumn to ensure a smooth handover. Thank you to Mandy for tireless efforts administering our training and Camp and to Alicia and the Committee for their support, and of course to all the riders, to whom I wish all success in the future year of work and competition.
