I have been involved in the Leadership Program and an assistant instructor for three years. After achieving the rank of Third Degree Black Belt I attended an Instructor Certification Course. Just a few months ago I became an ATA Certified Instructor. I decided to pursue the goal of becoming a certified instructor at the encouragement of my instructor, Mr. Paul Teboe. Mr. Teboe is a man I respect very much not only as a martial arts instructor but also as an individual. I certainly could not have accomplished my goals in Taekwondo without him. I also wanted to give something back to the school which has become a big part of my life. I have formed some great friendships at the school and my ATA school has really become my ATA family. In addition, I believe teaching is a great responsibility that challenges me to train harder. Instructors have to lead by example when demonstrating techniques to students; something I learned from Mr. Teboe. Finally, I derive great satisfaction from helping students. One of my most memorable experiences at the school was helping a student prepare for his black belt test. We spent a number of weeks going over his forms so he could mid-term and test for his first degree black belt. After a lot of perseverance and practice he achieved his goal. When he was awarded his black belt he was kind enough to tell me, "I couldn't have done it without you." I will never forget that moment. I feel truly privileged to be an instructor at ATA Martial Arts in Saline. I hope I can continue to help others attain their goals in Taekwondo. I would encourage all students to consider joining the Leadership Program. I also encourage all students to consider becoming an instructor and discover this rewarding experience.
2 Page 2 of 3 Training Tips ATA Daily Dozen Stretches HIYAA! 10. Lie on floor with knees up. Hands are placed next to your head, palms down, fingers pointing toward your shoulders. Arch back and lift. Hold lift for seven seconds; slowly lower to floor. Relax three seconds and lift again. Repeat three times. 11. Support heel on a table top or bar (or have a partner hold your heel). Bend the standing (back) leg with toes turned outward. Reach for foot, stretching face slowly toward the knee. Maintain stretched position for seven seconds; relax for three seconds. Repeat three times on each side 12. Support side of foot. Pivot standing foot with toes pointed out. Keeping back straight, stretch toward extended foot. Maintain stretched position for seven seconds; relax for three seconds. Repeat three times on each side. Kardio Korner Front (Jab) Punch The front punch, otherwise known as the "jab", is one of the most basic of all techniques, however to perfect it requires a number of key elements. It is simple enough just to punch but to do so with speed and accuracy requires a great deal of practice. Boxers do not simply just throw their fists out and hope it works! To perform the perfect front punch a number of elements must be considered. These are: A punch starts at the feet so the legs must be bent and ready. As the punch goes forward shift your weight slightly forward over the front leg (do not over balance). Do not punch too far. Aim to hit about 1 inch into your target. Over reaching will unbalance you, and leave you unable to recover and vulnerable to attack. As you punch rotate the arm slightly inwards. This twisting motion increase the power of your punch by letting gravity work with you it also fully utilises your reach. And finally recover your punch. What goes out at 1 speed must come back 10 times faster to protect from attack and stop your opponent grabbing (potentially) the arm.

5 HIYAA! Page 3 of 3 Taekwondo Sam Dan Bong (Three Section Staff) The Sam Dan Bong or three-section staff is one of the newest weapons offered by Protech. It is based on a Chinese flail weapon that consists of three wooden or metal staffs connected by metal rings or rope. The staves can be spun to gather momentum resulting in a powerful strike, or their articulation can be used to strike over or around a shield or other defensive block. Many of the techniques are similar to that of the Jahng Bong (staff), so spinning moves over the head and behind the back, such as helicopter spins and neck rolls, can be practiced with a regular staff. The Sam Dan Bong has the advantage of being used both as a long-range weapon or a short-range weapon. Acting as an extension of the users arm, the three sectional staff can strike, block, choke, stab, sweep legs, and whip, often with different sections of the staff acting at the same time. The chains or binding ropes of the three-section staff are used to entangle an opponent and their weapons. Historically the Sam Dan Bong was made of white oak or Chinese red maple; modern staves are constructed from rattan, bamboo, various hardwoods or aluminum. For optimum fit, each of the three sticks should be about the length of the combatant s arm (24 to 28 inches) and have a combined diameter that easily fits in the hand (usually about 1.25 inches). These are connected by chains of rings (usually of five inches) and modern versions use ball-and-socket joints. The ATA Protech Sam Dan Bong is held together with strong cords and is made of durable black foam.
