1 San Antonio Missions (39-29, 77-60) at Corpus Christi Hooks (40-28, 82-56) Sunday, September 1, 2013 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 6:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: Home Road Series 6-2 Sweeps W 1 Streak 2-3 Last Last 10 RECORD-SETTING RALLY: Down to its final strike, Corpus Christi erupted for four runs in the ninth inning to stun San Antonio with a 10-9 walk-off victory Saturday night. The improbable triumph was just another chapter in the Hooks storybook season which now features a club-record 82 wins. Trailing 9-6, Matt Duffy got it started with a one-out double to left-center off Missions closer Jeremy McBryde. Michael Burgess and Domingo Santana were then called upon to pinch hit. Burgess struck out and Santana worked the count to 3-2 before coaxing a walk. Leo Heras was next and worked a free pass, loading the bases for Ronny Torreyes. Behind in the count 1-2, Torreyes smacked a triple down the right-field line to tie the game. Preston Tucker hit a swinging bunt up the first baseline. Catcher Austin Hedges throw sailed into right as Torreyes scored the winning run. The Hooks clubbed a season-high 18 hits. Torreyes and Tucker notched four while Matt Duffy pulled down three. Erik Castro went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, sac fly and three RBIs. Jonas Dufek improved to 7-0 thanks to a scoreless ninth. 2 PAGE 2 I-37 SERIES: Following last night s dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind triumph, Corpus Christi owns a 1-game lead over San Antonio with 2 to play for the Texas League South 2nd-half title. Both clubs have secured playoff berths but home-field advantage in the divisional round is on the line. After tomorrow s Labor Day matinee, the postseason begins. The Hooks and Missions open the TL South Division series Wednesday night at Whataburger Field. HEART ATTACK HOOKS: Last night marked Corpus Christi s 11th walk-off win of the season and the 2nd consecutive last atbat victory at Whataburger Field. For the month of August, the Hooks went 13-3 in games decided by 2 runs or less. Thru Corpus Christi s last 16 wins, the club has pulled ahead to win in the 8th inning or later 11 times. The Hooks own a Texas League best record in 1-run contests. ROBINSON TO OKC: In the wake of Houston calling up RHP Jorge De Leon from Oklahoma City, the Astros have shipped RHP Andrew Robinson to the RedHawks. Robinson posted a 3-2 record and 3.28 ERA in 38 appearances with Corpus Christi. He went 3-for-4 in save chances, striking out 37 against 14 walks in 49.1 innings. Robinson, who yielded a run in the 8th last night, stood 3-0 with 3 saves and a 1.74 ERA in 22 2nd-half appearances. Now each member of Corpus Christi s Opening Day relief corps has been called up to either Oklahoma City or Houston. SOGARD ACTIVATED: LHP Alex Sogard returns to Corpus Christi s active roster today. Sogard was placed on the disabled list after being hit in the left elbow by a line drive off the bat of Midland s Beau Taylor on August 23. He owns a 3.22 ERA in 15 appearances for the Hooks, going 3-for-4 in save chances. ON A TEAR: INF Ronny Torreyes extended his hitting streak to 9 games last night. Torreyes is 16-for-35 (.457) with 9 runs, 3 doubles, 2 triples and 6 RBIs during this stretch, raising his batting average from.205 to.264. The 20-year-old from Venezuela has hit safely in 21 of the last 26 games. MEET YOUR CATCHERS: Houston has sent Brett Clements to fill Ryan McCurdy s spot on the roster. A native of Riverview, FL, Clements was acquired by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in mid June out of Nova Southeastern. Clements committed just two errors in 297 total chances, while throwing out 27 percent of would-be base stealers. Clements is the 7th catcher to suit up for Corpus Christi this season. C Luis Alvarez is 4-for-17 (.235) with a double, sac fly, 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 6 contests for the Hooks. Alvarez had played in only 33 games prior to joining Corpus Christi and has struggled in the field, committing two passed balls and a throwing error.
