Over the years Great Lakes has grown, added programs, and evolved. So has our need for change in our newsletter. The board felt now was a good time to update. Mary Beth Ellerbrock, our editor, was experiencing the same with her family and job. Her time was at a premium too, so she was in full agreement for us to bring in a person who does this as a profession. Sue Finley did such a great job on our directory, that the Midwest Herdsman was a natural choice. I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to Mary Beth. She did a great job and unless you have been in her shoes, you do not know the hard work and time it takes to do a newsletter. By now the World Beef Show is behind us. I was pleased to see the number of new people entered for the show. It is exciting to see the number of people who are discovering the Belted Galloway breed. Having attended several county fairs you have lots of people walking through the barns. They are always attracted to the Belties. But it seems to me Sutiff s Woody, Champion Finished Steer exhibited by Sutliff Belties, Solon, Iowa. more and more people are asking about cattle. They all want to know the advantages of raising Belties. The buzz is: grass fed, all natural, organic, carcass quality, lower maintenance costs, cheaper feed to meat conversion, and yes, cute. To clone a phrase from one of the best Angus promoters I have had the pleasure to know, We are feeling Beltie fever. One last thought, if you are on the internet I m sure you have seen the number of cattle sales going on. Last spring the sale in Fryeburg had over half the cattle sell over the internet. One of the best ones I have seen are the pasture sales. They have videos of the cattle moving around the pasture. The bidding goes on for several days so you can place your bids on the cattle and have time to evaluate your decision and bid again without auction pressure. The best part is you can do it at home at your convenience. Just another new and better way to market or buy cattle. Hope to see and visit with you at the National Meeting. It will be an educational and fun weekend. Don t forget to embrace the Beltie Fever. - Terry Willis, President of the GLBGA Great Lakes Belted Galloway News Fall

In regards to my family herd, we have a mixture of dun and black, however dun would have to be my favorite type of cattle. The red Belted Galloways have a beauty of their own. I have always enjoyed analyzing them and watching them in other herd s pastures. Now, most likely other then color we find much more discussion in the belts. Is a weird belt a good belt? Is a half belt a good belt? What about solid cattle? In my own opinion a belt is a belt and no matter how wide, narrow or if it s half that I can tolerate it much more then white feet or any other miss mark. I have not seen a study that states that wide belts will throw Niche marketing takes on many forms in the Beltie breed. One that worked for us began when our kids started in 4-H over 11 years ago. They started with two steers each. That gave them a spare just in case one of the steers didn t turn out or finish at the right time for our fair. For the livestock auction, the kids wrote a letter about their steers and took them to prospective bidders and personally invited them to the auction. After the auction they thanked the buyer and the contending bidder for their support and provided the buyer with a picture of the steer. We also offered to take the steers home and deliver them to the slaughter house to reduce the stress on the steers and assure the quality of the meat. At the fair we had all of our steers ultra sounded for carcass quality. We also had our bulls ultra sounded so we could provide carcass data. It also gave us feedback on our breeding program. After the 4-H auction we had to market the steers we had left. We talked with people and told them the advantages of farm raised beef. Happy customers lead to referrals and people asking for our beef and soon we were raising all the steers we had time and space for. At first they were resistant to Beltie beef. We were able to show the Belties produced a quality carcass just like the other breeds of wide belts, or narrow belts will throw narrow belts. In fact, the beauty of this breed is that you never know what you re going to get. To me we need to continue to focus on making good functional cattle that are going to go out and work in the pasture. Selection should be made on making productive cattle not on color pattern and belt size, width, etc. To me if we want to continue to raise cattle that your kids will show, we need to make sure we are breeding cattle that will last for them to raise. Well this has been another story from the pen. Look forward to seeing everyone at World Beef Expo, good luck and work hard! Niche Marketing by Terry Willis cattle. We told people about the Beltie data that the breed had compiled and all of a sudden we had people asking for Beltie beef. We were able to sell at a premium over market because we : promoted all natural beef - no hormones, only vaccinations, antibiotics for illness only. grain fed to achieve a quality carcass carcass data provided on the animal money back guarantee if not satisfied hand delivered to the slaughter house Now the kids are done with 4-H and we only raise a couple of steers so we have the time to concentrate on breeding stock. We still have customers who will buy beef from kids who have bought calves from us. Our neighbor has some of our customers because he is using a bull he bought from us and we help him with marketing. This is only an example of one niche market. When developing your own niche market: you need to identify the market that fits your program, produce a quality product, provide the benefits of your product, tell customers the advantages of buying from you, and follow up to be sure your customers are happy. The key to a successful niche market for us is service, service and more service! 2 Fall 2010 Great Lakes Belted Galloway News

3 Preventing Calf Diseases By Mark Hilton, DVM is a clinical associate professor of beef production at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN Although most of us try to calve early spring, many of us calve almost all year long or may have a fall calving program, whenever, I thought this would be good reading for any cow/calf operation. KJ It s calving time for much of North America. Prevention of disease now can mean a much more successful year for your cattle business. Here are some keys to help ensure success: Calve in a clean, dry environment. Clean means a place where you didn t winter cows. Moisture can be a calf-killer, so calve on well-drained land. The solution to pollution is dilution. Calves born outside on pasture where animals are spread out is ideal. Of course, ambient temperature is a factor, too, but being outside in weather conducive to calving remains best. Keep the herd out of the barn. If cows and calves have access to a barn, it becomes a disease incubator. Letting calves into a well-bedded shelter during inclement weather is fine, but keep the cows out of the barn. Ensuring calves get adequate colostrum is easy in a dairy situation, but with beef cows, we don t always know if the calves have nursed or how much. If you re unsure if a calf nursed (calf may seem clueless, cow s udder is tight or the calf appears gaunt), milk out the cow and get 2-3 quarts into those calves ASAP. It s critical that this is done within 12 hours of age. Now, to see if the calf does know how to nurse, pen the calf away from the cow but allow nose-to-nose contact. A short gate in the corner of the pen works best. In 6-8 hours, put the calf with its dam and see if he nurses. If he does, you re in good shape. If not, you have to tube the calf twice daily until he figures it out. If the calf is slow to learn to nurse, don t try to force him to suckle twice/day; you ll get frustrated and so will the calf. Instead, try about once every other day and see if the calf is getting any smarter. Be sure to castrate that calf: and, if you get many similar calves, sent the sire to market and buy a bull that will increase vigor at birth. Increasing calf vigor at birth helps ensure adequate colostrum intake. Keep cows separate from first-calf heifers. Because cows have been exposed to more pathogens than heifers, the calves from older cows should gain more pathogens than heifers, the calves from older cows should game more immunity after nursing their colostrum. When calves are exposed to a disease agent, the calves from heifers will likely get sick while the calves from cows may not. The bad news, though, is that once the sick calves contaminate the environment, even the healthy calves may get sick, Don t pay good money for disease. Calving season isn t the time to introduce new animals into the herd. Don t buy new Meet Brad and Brenda McClain Double B Ranch, Dodgeville, WI We live on 40 acres in a small farming community west of Madison WI. We have been working to establish a niche brand of Belted Galloway that we have termed compact. The term is to recognize the fact that our herd is intended to maintain all of the outstanding features of mainstream Belted Galloway without the full size and the related cost associated with maintaining them. We have found Belted Galloway cattle to be so docile, which is excellent for the first time cattle owner, who may be intimidated by cattle in general just because of their size alone. Also, with their double coat they are able to flourish in our extreme temperatures here in Wisconsin. That is why we feel that smaller is more acceptable to not only the FIRST TIME cattle owner, but those of us who do not have a lot of acreage to sustain a herd of larger cattle. Smaller by no means makes them a novelty, unusable as beef cattle. Smaller means an average of 700 pounds, cows with calves and never buy a calf for a cow that lost hers. In fact, all new purchases should be quarantined from your herd for days. Vaccinate if necessary. Some calf diseases are diminished by using vaccine on the dam or the calf itself. Check with your vet for recommendations for your area. Move the herd. When you were born, you were put into a clean crib; don t newborn calves deserve the same start? Calving time is an exciting time of the year. It s also much more pleasant when all the calves are born healthy and stay that way all the way to weaning time. less intimidating and more manageable for smaller acreage. And NO, we are not wanting to turn them into MICRO MINI S, but just because they are COMPACT and smaller, does not mean that they are not put together well, and we believe they are an asset to the breed whether they weigh 700 pounds or 2,000 pounds. Our experience, to date, with people who are interested in our cattle have been some first time owners or people who have smaller acreage who want to maintain a smaller framed herd - less feed, land etc. This has ranged from younger people who grew up on a farm and now want to have their own small herd to retirees who still want to maintain their roots by having cattle but do not want a full scale operation. We have had people respond from all over the country who are intrigued with the concept and want to know more. - Brad and Brenda McClain, Double B Ranch, Dodgeville WI Great Lakes Belted Galloway News Fall

Board of Directors Candidates Kathi Jurkowski from Klover Korners Farm in Rockton, IL The Jurkowski s have been involved and raising belties since Kathi has been involved with the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Associaiton from day one. I ve been our herdsperson and over the years, also been the showperson. So, I know my way around the ring and the fields. My proudest accomplishments is working with our youth on both a national and regional level. Although retired from the showring, but now sneaking back in with my grandchildren, I am seen at a lot of the shows Kathi tells. Another position I have held over the years is Public Relations for the Great Lakes group. I have always tried to promote the breed and try to help new people interested in the Belties find animals. I ve have also been involved working on all our flyers and promotions material and am real proud of our new semen catalog and hope they are handy and helpful to all. Many know me through the BYG newsletter and or our camp that we had last year in Joliet. I would like to continue serving YOU and the breed. The three-day event showcased more than 600 exhibitors, including 13 different breeds of cattle in the Wisconsin Cattlemen s Beef Tent. With near perfect weather the first two days, attendance swelled to around 15,000 the first day and 20,000 the second, while heavy rain limited attendance to about 5,000 before forcing the show to close. Despite this, large crowds viewed TEK Cattle s pair of heifers and a very impressive GLBGA display hosted by Terry and Karlyn Etheridge (TEK Cattle), Pat Frey (Frey s Fun-E Farm), and Pat and Nancy Snyder (Valley View Farm). The display, otic colors, was an inviting stop for many interested people, which kept everyone busy distributing literature and answering questions on the characteristics and attributes of the breed. It was also good to visit with several Beltie breeders, who stopped by the display to say hello. The Belties received additional promotion at the show when a photo of a group of heifers owned by TEK Cattle appeared in the St. Paul Pioneer Press in a special advertising feature by Destron Fearing, which the company was also distributing in the beef tent. Plans are well underway for next year s show, so mark your calendar for July 12 through 14, and plan to visit the 2011 WFTD at Seehafer Acres, Inc. in Marshfield, WI. beautifully assembled by Pat Frey in patri- kkowski@aol.com or call Fall 2010 Great Lakes Belted Galloway News
